There was no direction of whether to order at the counter or be seated. Hubby ordered a salad that he asked for with chicken but when it came out about 45 minutes later, there was no chicken. I ordered a salad and a mini hamburger- it was advertised on a Kaiser roll, but came out on two slices of bread. When I ordered it, I asked for it medium rare, but it was well done when it finally appeared. Disappointing. The food tasted fine although my hubby's chicken tasted like charcoal. About a half hour after waiting, the people next to us were told there was no roast beef. They adjusted their order and got their food before us, although we ordered before them. A bit strange. While I was waiting for our food, I walked inside to see what kind of things were for sale. They had balsamic vinegar and olive oil which were nice. The vinaigrette was really good and we were told they used the balsamic from it. However, on the shelves in the back, there was a cruddy jar of something that no one would buy. Why can't every other business be as welcoming and caring as the Gokul Supermarket? Plus their prices are so reasonable that you never pause to hit the button for the infamous online marketplace. Perhaps Gokul is a return to the what was ... To a time when markets were small store fronts located in neighborhoods where people smiled in recognition of their neighbors and business people knew their customers' shopping habits. Shopping at Gokul leaves you (And, you can depart with curry leaves if you choose.) feeling good as you return to the real world. Since they opened their doors many years ago that has been a consistent trait! Gokul spared no expense with their signage and exterior decorations. Actually, they spent almost no money on the outside of their business and my sole complaint is that their storefront offers no indication that there is a special place of mystery (For those who have yet to experience the delight of Indian culinary traditions.) and delight (For those of us who love to fill our homes with the scent of curries while indulging on a warm naan or a samosa with yummy chutney.) inside. If you are searching for Gokul drive carefully along Route 9 since their 'driveway' is as narrow as my home's and not well marked. You might have to turn around if you miss the exact point in the highway to turn. And, I know the store entrance is not pretty ... Sort of like a small warehouse but go in ... Be welcomed and let your eyes gaze discoveries that will soon help you prepare a delicious meal. So many naan options ... Rice in supplies large and small. Did I mention their employees will smile and answer your questions? Their produce and herb selection seems to offer so many options of freshness with prices that make you really wonder how large grocery chains get away with charging exorbitant prices for food they buy in bulk when a store like Gokul offers value and quality. There produce section has items that I still wonder about their taste and perhaps need to add to my next meal (someone text me a reminder to ask what some of those items are) but I always leave with fresh items in my bag. The spice selection is awesome! And when you notice the prices you almost choke remembering what you paid your mega grocer the last time you bought spices in one of those red and white bottles that Mc ... markets. There are many frozen food options and you don't even have to be a cook to walk away with all you need for a complete Indian dinner at home. Walk down an aisle and listen to the background music or the conversations of customers and allow yourself to be transported to Mumbai or Bhopal. There is even a reminder of the historical British connection when you eye the cans of Heinz beans on a shelf. Chutneys of every variety so many choices to be had. And, your sweet tooth is not forgotten. Just take a peek into the refrigerated units ... Mmmmmmm And, I even spotted some cookies to complete my shopping visit. When I reached the cashier he said, "don't you want three? They are three for one dollar.". Fresh crispy good cookies ... One Dollar giving me more cookies than you get in those girl scout boxes that actually crunched. So stop by for the experience ... See if they have the spices you need or herbs at a reasonable price or learn to cook Indian cuisine, which will mean that you will soon be here quite frequently.
