The weather was great, and the sea was calm. Dolphins accompanied us at the bow of the boat on our way out of the harbor. The water was clear enough to get amazing photos of these playful animals.. Our trip was in between fishing seasons (late January) and it seemed like the fishery was already depleted and all that was left were undersized fish and those pesky perch. So fishing wise the trip was a bust. I can't knock the experience because our burlap sack was empty. There are no guarantees when it comes to fishing. Crew was solid. Mike the deckhand was helpful and had a good attitude. Nacho the cook was serving up some tasty burgers in the galley. Family-friendly? We were the only family on this trip and it was safe for kids. They play classic rock and they do a great job setting up your fishing rigs, even if you bring your own poles. The Chubasco 2 was still a fun time and the Oceanside Sea Center (the owners/managers) did a great job from start to finish. We used Groupon to buy discounted tickets. Recommended. Tips - There were only 18 total fishermen (including crew) on our half day trip on a Friday. That was a good number as there was enough room to fish and rotate spots along the railing. On weekends as many as 40 people fish on this boat and that would be too crowded for me. If you can swing it, go midweek. - Remember to tip the crew. - Many people rented poles ($15). Good idea if you're new. They also provide the hook and weight and will make sure that you're always up and running.

It was recently re-furnished I think because my other trips have been on the Chubasco. We did a private charter here for a friend's bachelor party yesterday and Captain Joe and James made it a perfect trip! We paid and chartered for 12, but had some guys back out. Fortunately we had already paid for the charter. We caught something around 50 or 60 fish thanks to Captain Joe knowing all the good spots. Both Captain Joe and James were attentive on the deck and were both proactively helping us land fish on the deck. James got all our catch cleaned, filleted and bagged and it made for a great dinner last night! Seriously haven't had that many fish tacos ever in my life. Looking forward to going on a yellowtail charter with Sea Star. Thanks Captain Joe and James!

For the first time in decades of family…read moregatherings, we'd flaked on scheduling a fishing trip, it was late December, and nobody had room for the five of us. Until Chuck called me back, last minute. "I just got a cancellation -- you still up for fishing?" To be clear, the adventure didn't measure up to some of the more impressive charters I've enjoyed, but it wasn't the time of year where bigger fish, like tuna, were abundant. Chuck said we'd be hunting for Sheepshead and Rockfish (not to be confused with east coast Rockfish), as we headed out we saw plenty of fat and happy seals, dolphin dropped by to say hello, and my kid stood up top with Chuck, peppering him with questions about his tales from the seas, of which he had many, including a gray whale epic that blew me away. In the end, our lines generally popped with activity, and I never mellowed over that genuine intrigue about deep sea fishing, the "I wonder what's on the end of my line" anticipation as I reeled up a catch. For those of you who wonder how to cook Sheepshead -- it's a rubbery, almost Cod-like fillet -- check the interwebs for crab cake recipes. It took plenty of bread crumbs and more than a little sriracha, but in the end we had winner winner fishin' dinner.
