David was wonderful to work with from the initial phone call through delivery. His price was fair and communication was excellent.

The traffic was bad. The route was a bit difficult to get to my mechanic., but Wone kept the conversation going to keep me at ease. The price was totally worth it, and I gave a little extra for tip as well. I would highly recommend.

But my experience with this company was so horrible I thought others should be warned. I called Ship-a-Car to have my car delivered from Miami to Virginia. I specified that I needed the car to be delivered there on 15 August--I would not even be in Virginia before that date, and on the 16th I had to start a new job. I added that because of my commitments in Florida, the shippers could not pick up the car until Saturday, 11 August. I was told one of their drivers, Victor of Big City Towing & Recovery, could ship my car but that it would cost an extra $50 than the $600 previously quoted. They told me Victor was one of their best drivers. Victor called me on Thursday, 9 August to tell me he would be picking up the car on Friday. I explained that no, Ship-a-Car and I had agreed the car would be picked up on Saturday, not Friday. Victor and I originally arranged a pick up time of 10am, but because of a change of plans I asked Victor if we could do the pickup at 1pm instead of 10am. Victor told me mine was the last car he had to pick up before traveling north, but otherwise agreed to the pick-up time. His movers showed up at 12:45pm, and the car was ready for pickup then. On Tuesday 14 August, Victor called to tell me that he was ready to deliver my car. Once again I was confused, because I had said I wouldn't even be there until 15 August. I told Victor I was still in Florida, and could receive the car the next day. He said he would leave my car in a warehouse in Maryland and deliver it to me the next evening. At 6:15pm on 15 August, not having heard from anyone, I called Victor. He told me he was stuck in traffic and that he would not be delivering my car that night. When I told Victor that was not going to work for me, he immediately became defensive and said he could only work 90 minutes more and there was no way he could deliver my car that night. I tried to ask if he could have someone else deliver the car, but he wouldn't hear it. I explained to Victor that I needed to be at work at 8am and asked if he could deliver it early so I could still get to work on time. Victor replied he would deliver the car any time before noon. At that point I stated I shouldn't be paying the full price, since I wasn't getting the service advertised. Victor said I'd be paying the full price, or else he'd drive my car back to Florida, and charge me for that, too. Then he said I was disrespecting him, that he was an educated man, and hung up on me. I could not believe that I was at the mercy of this driver. When the rep at Ship-a-Car was polite, it was very obvious from our exchange that his main concern was telling me this was not Victor's fault. I disagree--the delay may not have been, but the rudeness and unprofessional behavior certainly was. The rep also seemed to be saying some of this was my fault--until he consulted his notes and remembered that he and I had originally agreed to the Saturday pickup and Wednesday delivery. I was told to pay Victor the remaining $500 in cash. He said Victor would not take the car off the truck until I forked over the cash, a warning that I thought was strange since they'd never had any trouble getting paid by me. Given the lack of professional demeanor up to that point, I was worried this meant they would later claim I hadn't paid. I was also worried about the state of my car. Victor then sent me a long text-- no apologies offered for the inconvenience to me. Instead he berated me for not mentioning to the broker that I had made him wait 24hours to pick up my car. Victor added that I took up an additional 3 hours of his time on Saturday, for which he normally charges $75/hour, implying that I was ungrateful for his largesse in not charging me. This was the first I was hearing of a $75/hour fee, and I pointed out that he could have said no when I asked to delay the car pickup time to 1pm. Luckily, I never had to deal with Victor again after that exchange. And I'm going to keep it that way. When Vinny's Towing and Recovery delivered my car (at 12:15pm), I was understandably concerned that I would be dealing with more of the same. The rep from Vinny's, however, was very courteous. When I told him I had had a run-in with Victor, he confided that they receive many complaints about Victor and that he is a very difficult person to deal with. When I told him that I had raised the possibility to both Victor and the broker that someone else could deliver my car on the evening of 15 August, he said he would have been more than happy to deliver it then, had they called him. Bottom line, save yourself the aggravation and work with a company that understands it's providing a paid service, not doing you a favor. Maybe even one that cares about keeping commitments. Caveat Emptor.

Unlike other times I have used AAA for towing requests, the business who would be assigned to come to tow me would call, their tower would identify who he was, where he was coming from, and how long it would be before he arrived. The 40 West guy never called to let me know he was on his way, where he was coming from, or how soon it would be before he would arrive. All he brought was attitude. I had borrowed a car from a family member and was at the location within 10 minutes (if not less) after calling AAA ... AAA told me the tow truck would be at the location within 30 minutes -- maybe that is their standard estimated time they use when a tow is requested or maybe the girl I spoke to did not know the correct protocol? I don't know. When I arrived at the facility that had my car, the tow truck was already there. I went inside to pay my bill and get my car key. I was warned by the employee at the location that the 40 West driver appeared to be upset because I was not there when he arrived. I walked out to his truck and apologized for him having to wait and his reply was a smug "whatever" with a shrug of his shoulders. His attitude only went downhill after that. He wanted to know what was wrong with my car and if payment was going to be by cash. I explained my car problem (not that he needed to know) and why I needed it re-towed and I would pay with a credit card. He shrugged again and he added "I was told you were paying with cash." I felt the need to ask if paying with a credit card was going to be an issue. He replied, "No" and what cards he would accept, but his attitude spoke louder than words. He proceeded to move his truck (roll back) and positioned it behind my car. As he backed my car onto the roll back and worked to secure it, another person from the facility where I had my car, came out to quickly speak to me. While I was busy talking with him, the 40 West driver got into the truck and simply left without me. I had no idea where he had gone or which route he took. I quickly got into my borrowed car and drove quickly to the garage where my car was to go, hoping he would be there. Upon arrival, he was there along with his attitude. Other unfortunate issues took place once at the garage (additional charges for mileage that had to be explained and settled), but his attitude and rudeness did not wane toward me or toward the receptionist at the garage. To say he was very unprofessional is an understatement. I have never used 40 West in the past (they were not my choice, but assigned through AAA), and after this experience, it is highly unlikely that I would recommend them. I was already upset about my car having an issue where it had to be re-towed, but to have this guy show up with a MAJOR attitude that continued through the entire time I had to deal with him, did not set well with me, hence the need to post this review.
