I had a pleasant experience getting an alignment done on my 5 series bmw. They finished quickly and price was reasonable. They did up charge me for a specialty alignment and were unable to provide me a spec sheet so I Couldnt even see what was done. I want to love Ken's. But my experiences are like dealing with two different companies . On one day they are beyond excellent and cannot do enough to satisfy the customer. And to boot, they do work that no one else would touch. For me, that included a complete rebuild of my 2006 transmission in 2024 in their shop. Yes it was costly but it was not a remanufactured tranny and extended the life of my car. If the engine goes, I'll likely return for an engine rebuild rather than a remanufactured engine. On another day, some basic work that should be simple and easy they seem capable of completely missing the mark. Couple this with their reliance on Metro Motor.com and their BG maintenance recommendations and you have what feels like a very hard sell to get your money. The BG recommendations are like a laundry list of what you MIGHT do to your auto if you had unlimited funds and just wanted to spend freely. There seems to be no rnyme or reason to the recommendations either in milage or elapased time. Don't get me wrong. I don't mind paying premiusm prices (which Ken's is) for premium work. That's the issue. I feel like it's sometimes worth it and other times not. I've reached the consclusion that they will get my more difficult jobs but routine maintenance will be handled elsewhere. I wonder if over time they have changed ownership or have new sales incentives in place. It's a shame. I really want them to be like The Car Talk guys from Boston and only do what's right. read more

Avoid Ken's Automotive and Transmission Service at all costs--especially Tyler, the technician. I was lied to twice about the bellhousing being measured. That procedure requires actually removing the bellhousing, taking off the clutch, and using a dial indicator on the flywheel, along with removing the spark plugs to properly rotate the engine. None of that was done. Instead, they simply shoved the transmission back in and still charged me $613. That's not just poor workmanship--it's outright dishonest. I'm beyond disappointed and honestly shocked that a business operating like this is still open. If you value your money and your vehicle, stay far away from this place. read more

However- while we initially appreciated the transparency and felt like this neighborhood shop was a more affordable, honest alternative to the dealership- that has since changed. Very poor customer service, it is obvious they are looking to make an extra dollar from their customers wherever they can. I questioned a 40% markup on my tow invoice (which I coordinated but was accidentally billed to Ken's by the tow company). I was originally told by Ken's administrative personnel that this markup was from the tow company, which turned out to not be true. Then, when they admitted that it was their own markup, they told me it was my fault and they would not refund me because I was "uninformed". Instead of looking out for their customer they happily accepted the unearned money and told me to have a nice day. I am glad I did not use them for any repair work. I can only imagine what sort of other "markups" they apply to unknowing customers. read more

My tire went flat right across the street from the shop on my lunch break. The people were really great in helping me to try and patch it! When patching it became impossible (tear to the inner wall) they were able to help me get all new tires. Managed to get my car fixed up and running again in just a couple hours! Definitely recommend! I just had my car in to get a headlight/sensor issue fixed. Not only was I not told the almost $200 diagnosis fee, nothing was even fixed on the car. When I disagreed on payment, mostly because I simply wanted to be aware of the diagnostic fee, they stated they'd retain my vehicle in their bay (with my children's car seats who I needed to pick up from daycare), until they received a credit card number. I thought great there going to add much more when all is said & done. That was NOT the case-to my surprise, it was the same price he quoted when I picked up my vehicle. 2/13/2022 On Tuesday Feb 1, 2022 I took my 2009 Ford Crown Victoria to Ken's Automotive located at 371 W. Patrick Street, Frederick MD 21701, Phone 301-662-5100. The issue with my car was the Power Steering. The car would not turn when I turned the steering wheel. It felt like it was missing a cog. Sometimes I could make a turn, other times, I could not. I explained this intermittent problem to the team at Kens and they agreed to check it out. On Wednesday, Feb 2, 2022 I received Ken' "Vehicle Health Assessment" of 40 items not related to my issue. In relation to the reason I took the car in their notes said "The power steering fluid smells burnt and has metal particles in it. It is recommended replacing the power steering pump as well as the power steering hoses and fluids that go to the reservoir. After these repairs have been made, reinspect the area". The estimate verbally provided was $1079 (Parts and Labor). I agreed to the repair as the 'steering' or 'lack of steering' was the reason I took my car in. I declined all their other recommendations. Two days later, on Friday Feb 4th, I received a call from Kens saying they had replaced the new pump and test driven the car, and that they now recommended an additional part, an "intermediate shaft" at an additional cost of $620. I expressed my concern that if it needed a shaft, that perhaps the pump was not the correct original diagnosis. I requested they "put the old pump back on". The response was, we don't have it, as it was traded in for the rebuilt one that was just installed. Note: This was the first time I was informed that I was receiving a rebuilt pump. At this point, I had no faith in their ability to diagnosis the proper problem. I am retired on a fixed income. I told them I would come get the car. As I live alone and don't have a spare car, I secured a ride to the shop. My ride dropped me off. I paid the $1109.15 repair charge. I got in my car and immediately noticed, when trying to make the first turn, that the car was EXACTLY the same! Additionally, the pump was whining. I walked back into the shop noting that they could not have possibly test driven it. I was told that perhaps the lines needed to be bled. They recommended I leave it until Monday so they could take another look. I Uber'ed home. On Monday Feb 7th, I was informed by Kens automotive that they suspected a bad rebuilt pump and recommended a second pump be installed. On Tuesday, Feb 8th I was told the second pump was installed and the car was ready for pickup. Again, I Uber'ed there. Upon arriving at Ken's my car was retrieved by a shop employee, said employee noting to me that the car still seemed 'the same'. Again, I was told the car needs the intermediate shaft. And again, I replied, then obviously the pump was NOT the problem. Frustrated and having no confidence in their ability to properly trouble shoot the issue, I decided to move on from Kens. I got it my car, and drove the 1-mile drive home. The next day, on Wednesday the Feb 9th I called Zach's Auto Clinic in Frederick and explained my issue. He immediately agreed that the Intermediate shaft needed to be replaced. Zach stated he could work on my car on Feb 16th. Additionally, Zach stated that he might not be able to secure the part. At this point I said, "if I can find the part, will you install it"? He quickly responded yes! After a few phone calls, I was able to order the part from a Ford dealership in Frederick. On Thursday, Feb 10th, I got in my car to go get the part, after driving less than 10 minutes, my car started to overheat! I called Ken's and will admit it was a short conversation. After giving my car a chance to cool down, I called Zach to tell him about the overheating issue and asked if I could bring the car to his shop that day; he agreed and I dropped it off about 9:00am. I secured yet another ride to the Ford dealership, picked up the intermediate shaft, at a cost of $318 and dropped it by Zach's Auto Clinic around 11:00am on the 10th. To my surprise about 2:00pm that same day, Zach's Auto Clinic called to say my car was ready for pickup! I asked about the overheating, he stated the fan had been unplugged! The repair charge at Zach's was $240. As of the writing of this letter, I believe, that Ken's Automotive misdiagnosed my cars issue from the start. I do not believe it needed a power steering pump replacement, or a second pump replacement. I've sense learned that a power steering pump doesn't intermittently work, it either pumps, or it doesn't. The entire experience from start to finish at Ken's was simply perfect. They completely knocked it out of the park. With the new system they sent me pictures and a complete review of my car and what needed to be done or was recommended and I was able to choose which things I wanted, they even emailed me a detailed estimate to help make the decision. They didn't pressure me at all and let me make my own decision. When my car was done Mark even drove it down to my job and met me to drop it off. I don't post too many reviews but feel the need to here. I took my SUV to 3 shops before deciding to have Kens rebuild my transmission. I mostly dealt with Ronnie and felt the most confident with their expertise. They explained the process thoroughly and kept me informed as the transmission was being rebuilt. They also finished the job when they said they would. My SUV is running great and I couldn't be happier with their service. They also called me a few weeks later to follow-up to make sure everything is running smoothly. read more

Short version: These folks where friendly, clear, and saved me $750! The full story: First, I don't like being pressured to spend(such shops make me run for the hills); instead these folks listened that I'm on a budget and that I asked if they could give me several options if possible, and list of priorities in case I can afford to do X now and come back to do repair Y later. Better yet if there was a Plan B less costly than a plan A..I had a serious issues with my older (nearly 100,000 mileage) car, break at the front pipe. Boy did Ken's have a great Plan B. How do I know Ken's were not exaggerating that Plan A would cost $1,000? Because Sears had given me a very similar plan A and a quote of $1,005 (I I didn't get a chance to mention to Ken's so they didn't know) Ken's had more expertise than Sears and added more details about mine being a California standards car so harder to find and expensive parts-- would have needed catalytic converters replaced etc..(very similar to summary Sears Auto gave me about reason and costs, but Sears did not explain the California angle) and again about a thousand bucks. But Ken's had a Plan B: they actually were able to hack off and weld back and make a new front pipe...no hard to find and expensive parts...my car which was super loud now purrs like a kitty cat...and it cost me $250 total. So there's your 750 savings..well, maybe not literally since I simply wasn't able to justify spending that much at Sears...so kept postponing and looking for other ideas..But Ken's sure saved me driving a smelly (exhaust fumes sometimes in cabin) and very loud and "accident-waiting to happen" car and also saved me serious money yes...Sear did *not* give any plan B. Sears Auto staff were kind and friendly but just have less expertise, or less options and fewer resources..like Ken's contracted with a business they work with to get Plan B done for my car. So, I really have to give kudos and thanks to Ronnie and Mark and everyone at Ken's for saving me big bucks, saving me stress and fumes and headaches worrying about it..and for avoiding pressuring me and listening and giving respect to customers who may not have big bucks ready to spend on their car but want to be listened to and then a fair honest and patient explanation of the options and if possible backup options. They delivered on all of these, so thank you Ken's! As a measure of their honesty, when I asked them if they could look over to see if my car needed other things, they also told me my relatively older car (97,000 miles) does not need any urgent work besides this that I just got, even though I thought there might well be. They recommended only one thing as important, that I get new tires before summer as mine are definitely worn. When I asked about doing two tires first and then another two later (again being on a budget) they said fine, and I plan to get my rear two replaced before weather gets hot, at Ken's..getting to the other two a bit later. Last but not least: Several reviews here argue back and forth about a supposed sign that "anything you leave in car is not our responsibility" First, I did not see any such sign, and I looked in several places, so it might really be an honest mistake (someone posting on wrong merchant) or a dishonest competitor using ugly tactics against Ken's. I don't know. But for goodness sake, there is nothing wrong with such a sign even if there was one: many of us drop off our car overnight (after hours) to be worked on first thing the next day, and it's completely reasonable for Ken's not to take responsibility if an item is stolen (although nothing was stolen from my car when I left overnight) if one leaves valuables overnight in plain view, it doesn't automatically mean that "some mechanic stole it" like one or two reviewers claimed. So I wanted to set the record straight on that, too. My only regret is I didn't realize their shuttle service, so next time I might ask for that as I drop off or pick up my car. read more
