I fully believe Stop & Shop corporate is trying to kill this store. It's chronically understaffed, so you have to wait in a long line for self-checkout machines that accuse you of theft if you put your own bag down in the bagging area and require staff intervention to work properly. The parking lot now features a friendly surveillance tower with cameras, a blue light, and occasional shouted pre-recorded announcements that you're being watched. You know, for that prison yard vibe everyone craves when grocery shopping! This store provided an invaluable resource to the community when it opened (we had our choice of 2 small, overpriced, and not at all clean markets, Flanagans and the Hi-Lo, when this Stop & Shop opened). Sadly, now they seem to be attempting to drive business away, probably because the real estate that the store and parking lot sit on have probably at least quintupled in value since 1995. read more

Not enough check out clerks!! I've shopped here for years, but only in the last few months have I had to wait in line for a ling time, whether regular or self checkout. Although I have been horrified on countless visits to this Stop & Pop -- A CAP! And the degenerates working at the deli counter on Sunday night were in a big rush to get to their cars and smoke a bag of LORD KNOWS WUT! I was lucky to meet a new friend in the produce section. In the past, I've heard people shout out "AHHHHHHHHHHH! There's a RAT!" as I pass random aisles, but thankfully I haven't witnessed any. On my latest visit, I was pleased to meet none other than Mr. Stuart Little! He danced around my feet, and scurried alongside me as I picked through moldy avocados. It was bliss. (see picture above). Sure, there will be containers of blueberries thrown on the ground, and I saw a little girl eating a can of Pringles off the floor in the snack aisle the other day while her father yelled at her siblings, but this store still has a better selection than Harvest Co-Op and NO TOFU BUCKET. read more

Produce department does not know fresh from rotten corn on the cob , dried out tasel and corn, not sweet.. tough; bad bad bad.. tomatoes with rough skin.. summer fruit is in, watch carefully. Milk was spoiled 1 day after purchse, just in time for expiration date. Boneless leg of lamb price changed 3 times before Easter, did not get the price I was expecting .. plus it was NOT BONELESS.. had a complete 8" bone in it. If you like previously frozen seafood,, its all they have.. why bother sell it Frozen .. Thaw it at home. Unless you want it desicated and two day thawing flesh gaps from ice mountain. Whats up with Boards Head.. give me 10 choices in polish deli ham and smoked fish in polish triangle.. smaller vendors, higher quality.. just no EBT at the Euro. The prices are good overall. They don't have the best meat selection especially when it comes to beef. For fresh produce they could do better. They keep vegetables out too long so when you go to get them they're wilted or close to going bad. Everything else is pretty good. They always have a lot of sales going on. Get a stop and shop card and use their app; they have more coupons on it. read more

This is absolutely the WORST stop and shop I've been too. I've lived in JP my whole life and its sad how this stop and shop just went down hill. The employees don't work!! All they do it talk and when you ask for help regarding something they look at you like your not worth their time! JP is full of great people and they found the worst of the worst to work here! This is a good stop and shop! The staff have always been professional/friendly to me, the prices are legit, and the selection is pretty solid! Convenient late night hours and nice big parking lot. Yes, they have an organic (bougie) section. Produce is hit or miss (but it is literally like that everywhere because we live in a metropolis and truck our food in from miles and miles away soooo.) Side note 2 u regulars, Stop and Shop card is bangin, saves me mad money per year would recommend. Check-out was a nightmare. Having fewer persons doing check-out means more people have to use self-checkout, even with larger orders. The larger the order, the more likely you are to have a snafu that requires intervention. This happened to me about 8 times today. I tried to use self-checkout for a large order because I had to bail out of a checkout station where the clerk and two other associates spent 10+ minutes trying to disentangle a payment complication with another customer that escalated into a payment dispute. Can't disputed sales be canceled and diverted for reconciliation elsewhere? That would mean less delay for the next customers and more predictability. As it turned out, I had to put all my intended purchases back into my shopping cart and look for another checkout option. But using another option also led to cascading inefficiency, since I needed so much help at "self-checkout." I have two years of experience working in a food store, and I'm a pretty efficient bagger, so many other people are less equipped to manage checkout hassles than I. I imagine that that having more customers use self-checkout reduces overhead. I'd like to believe that all goes to lower prices and higher pay for rank-and-file employees (who are not the problem here). Instead, I think the bulk of savings are going to boost profits for shareholders. I can't prove that the checkout management in this store is worse than at other Stop & Shops. I can only say that consumers who have a bad experience at one store will feel very motivated to take their business elsewhere. read more

This is seriously the best grocery store in Boston. The prices aren't ridiculous, there's a bunch of self check-out, everyone is nice, and there's always a good selection of produce and vegan stuff, as well as awesome international foods. AND THEY HAVE A DENTED CAN MARK-DOWN SECTION. I don't get why people think this place is sketchy. It's a grocery store. Everyone just calm down. No matter what time of day you show up here you will need to prepare to be patient and prepare to wait. There are never enough checkers and most of the self scanners are broken and surprisingly also have no one to support the ones working. So you can't ever pop in for a quick visit. There is a good selection of produce and items so they get a little bit of a pass. But prefer the Whole Foods for a quick item. read more

I'm really not sure what to say here. Some of these reviewers seem certifiably insane to me. I am new to JP, but only in the sense of never having personally lived here. My family is from JP, like back in the day, and I moved back to Boston from California. All of my family, who still all live in MA, were freaking out when my husband and I said we were moving to JP. Like it's scary or something. Ridiculous. I knew it was ridiculous before we moved in, but now that I live here I see that people's comments are just---- well, you get the idea. I wasn't sure what to expect when I walked into this Stop and Shop. I had read the reviews and I doubted them, but I wasn't sure. This Stop and Shop is almost exactly the same as the one in Weymouth (my hometown) which, last time I checked, is not the ghetto. In fact, it's better because it has a huge assortment of goods you could never get in Weymouth. I was expecting maybe a little dinginess or something. After all, it is a city grocery store. No, nothing. Their produce all looked good to me. They have an organic section too. Now, I don't eat organic so maybe it's lacking, but there is a Whole Foods if you need it. I can find these organic Amy's Burritos my husband likes here. I also found some tasty, but expensive, tortilla chips that looked better than any of the dorritos or tostito crap they had in their chip aisle. Oh good, look, a complaint: they should have better regular tortilla chips. Anyway, I had 0 problems with this store. Perfectly good Stop & Shop. If, like me, one of your favorite activities as a JP resident is reading yupsters' reviews of urban businesses, then this place is a goldmine. Some of this is downright hilarious. 1. It's a Stop & Shop, and is not 10% better or worse than any other Stop & Shop. You will not be buying locally-sourced chard here, but you won't be spending $6 on a half-gallon of milk like you will at WF either. 2. Yes, many people of ethnic minorities both shop and work here. If you find this particularly terrifying, I suggest you find a different place to live. 3. While I would indeed rate the cashiers as slower than your average S&S, I would say that the place is often better-stocked than the one I used to frequent in a nice, rich suburb. Clean, too. 4. I'd obviously love to have a closer TJ's or a Market Basket, but shopping here sure beats spending twice as much money at the aforementioned Whole Foods down the street. I'm actually not sure I could afford to live here if that were my only option. 5. Produce is definitely not great, but again it's only slightly worse than your average S&S. Market Basket's the only big supermarket chain with decent produce in my opinion - and thankfully JP has a couple of farmers' markets for anyone who feels like paying a premium. 6. Dear Stop & Shop, I regret to inform you that I will no longer be frequenting your JP location. I am clearly not in the demographic you are going for in this location. I am not an over-consuming fat American who buys all her food in boxes and the frozen section. I actually cook my meals. This means I want vegetables. Nice ones. Fresh ones. Lots of selection. I do not want to run in there because I need some peppers for a recipe and find them all mixed up (jalapenos with poblanos with banana with habanero) and once I find the ONE poblano pepper it's rotting and slimy. I wish I could say this was the first time this location of yours disappointed me. I've entered your store looking for pizza dough, brussel sprouts, sage, easy cheese (you'd think you would have succeeded on that one), and red onions. Each time I left empty handed. I haven't even been able to experience the awful customer service and checkout process everyone else complains about! I would love an interaction with a morose teenager scanning my foodstuffs! Oh, how I hate this Stop & Shop. Before Whole Foods opened in JP, I came here relatively frequently-- far more frequently than I wished-- to buy things I couldn't feasibly lug home on the 39 or the 66 from Trader Joe's in Coolidge Corner or the Symphony Whole Foods. It was a miserable existence, in large part because this store is miserable. I don't actually have any problem with the employees. I don't expect obsequious service anywhere, much less a grocery store, so I have felt perfectly fine about the cashiers' attitudes. And I have actually gotten someone to direct me to an item I was looking for without any eye-rolling. But, I've been here several times (in the FALL!) hoping to buy apples and leaving empty handed because they were all bruised or mushy or otherwise inedible. I once tried to buy an onion, any kind of onion, and there was not one in the whole place that wasn't rotten. Organic carrots? Never seen 'em. The prices are also surprisingly high for the dismal quality offered here. Really, what's the point of going to the grocery store if you can't actually find any food to eat there? read more

Wow, there is some serious hatred for this place. I came here during a quieter time, and was already in a bad mood from lack of sleep and a shitty day at work. Surprisingly, I didn't come out any more ticked off. My experience was relatively easy. I found what I wanted quickly, and was happy that they had bread and bagels that were inadvertently vegan. They also had Silk Chocolate Soymilk, so I was excited I didn't have to stop at the co-op for that (much pricier) I did self-check out and that was easy (surprisingly, usually I'm an idiot when it comes to those things). No crazy kids, and no messy isles. I would give it 4 stars but I didn't know you needed a Stop & Shop card to get the discounts on marked items and I was ticked about that. Poor labeling on their part. How hard is it to say, "Discount available on item in question with your Stop & Shop card!" Don't get my hopes up and then crush me... fuckers. read more

I hate going to this place. I leave in a bad mood every time. I don't plan on going again. One time I noticed they charged me $10 for flowers. I didn't buy flowers. When I went back the next day to get my money back I had to wait in line for 20 minutes because of all the people buying lottery tickets at the customer service desk. This may shock you but none of those people ended up having the winning ticket. I once waited in line for 30 minutes because the store was packed and the lady in front of me felt she was being overcharged and argued FOREVER. Most of the customers here shop using food stamps and it slows everything down. Then there are the people who use the self check out machines even though they don't know how to use them. The produce here sucks, probably because most of the customers only buy soda and chips so things are left to rot. Last week I bought mushrooms and 2 days later they were moldy, smelly and inedible. The members of Congress should come here on a saturday and watch all the tax dollars being wasted on soda and cheese puffs. Maybe then they'd finally strengthen the restrictions of SNAP and stop giving hand outs to the Corn Industry. Did I just make a political rant on this stupid site?! I only come here because I live in JP and like to buy certain canned goods, seltzer water and coffee that the new Whole Foods does not carry. Whole Foods is CHEAPER than this S&S. So forget the controversy. Just go to Whole Foods for your produce and meat and fish. Finally, they actually bring the carts up to the front door. But other than that, I have seen no improvements since they now must compete with WF. Here are my issues: Not enough open cashiers. Self-serve check-out often breaks down. Terrible selection of produce. Produce and meats often post-expiration date. I have had to return rotten chicken. It's not cheap, even with the "saving" card. Rotisserie chickens--where are they? Store is not stocked in weekends when they open. You have to negotiate all of the staff taking up all the room in the aisles as they do what they should have done before the doors opened. Poor job of stocking items--not dependable. Service is adequate at most. I just hate this place! read more

Among the worst grocery stores I've ever been to. I go either out of location convenience, or when I absolutely need something that only they have. Produce is consistently terrible; not fresh and flavorless. Prices are average. Selection is Ok. Staff is comically un-helpful. I've seen deli workers carry on conversations for what seemed like more than 5 minutes while completely ignoring people wait in line. I've seen people waiting near the self check out for assistance long enough for them to leave out of frustration. The place is pretty clean, and carries standard groceries that you can find at any chain, so there you go. 2 stars, because I feel good. read more

This place is a joke. 1. Customers struggling in the self-check out are deliberately ignored or snapped at. Nobody helps them bagging either, even when the worker is 5 feet away leaning on the wall checking on her manicure. 2. Workers smoke next to the entrance, so everyone entering the store has to smoke along. 3. Rude customers don't bring the carts back, so carts are all spread out in the parking lot, while workers smoke and look at them. Carts hit the parked cars but nobody seems to care. 4. Haven't been to this one in a while but I stopped in the other day and from start to finish had the WORST experience. To start off I wanted some lettuce for a salad. All the packaged lettuce was due to expire in just a couple days..I bought the one that was supposed to have the most life left and it's two days later in my fridge already turning to mush. Then I went to the deli counter to get some pasta salad but ended up passing because it looked NASTY...dry noodles like it had been sitting in the sun all day. I got the rest of my items that came to $127 (I usually spend about $80-$90 when I go to trader Joe's) it felt like everything was $5 more and horrible quality. I got in line after another lady cut me. There was literally ONE cashier on duty and then all self check outs on a super busy day. The woman monitoring the self check out never once offered to help me with anything, other than staring me down the whole time to make sure I didn't steal anything. I asked if she could scan her card since I didn't have one on me and she was so rude about it. I pointed to something I thought was supposed to be on sale "THE SALE ITEMS COME UP AT THE END OF THE TRANSACTION!" okay...sorry..? Got to the parking lot and started walking my shopping cart back..the cart attendee flags me down from across the lot and tells me to bring it to him. Then flags down another lady who was returning hers to one of the cart stations and has her walk it all the way over to him at the front of the store. Like..I'm sorry but your one job is to retrieve the carts and you can tell he just stands still all day and yells at customers to bring the carts to him. Got home, cooked one of the hamburgers I bought. It was gross..weird spices I wasn't expecting. I also bought a piece of cake from the bakery..frosting was good but the cake itself tasted dry and stale. After reading this review, I was a little hesitant to go into this place, but I'm new in town and it's nearby, so I gave it a whirl. C'mon, people, it's not so bad. I've tried to go here many times, to find what I do need, but in rare quantities. I've seen what people have stated here before about what they do and don't have, and they seem to stock food for lower economic standards, which is unfortunate. I know there is food, but sometimes looking at a packaging called "quality food".. and not really knowing the contents, it saddens me. The staff here is very apathetic. Over worked and under paid employees will always give horrible customer service. I feel that i'm a burden to anyone who works there, especially when they are talking to their friends in spanish thinking I don't understand what they are saying (b/c i'm white), it upsets me to see the reverse racism, and segregation that this store has. I try to be as friendly as possible and thank everyone whenever I'm here. Prices are decent, plenty of parking and T accessible... So, why do I hate coming here? There's plenty of staff, but only a few registers are ever open. Those that are typically staffed by slow, underwhelmed, distracted teenagers. So checkout is AWAYS a saga. But before that you have to struggle through thickets of bravado and self-centered oblivion. They have recently been remodeled, which is why I can give them TWO stars rather than one. The meat appears to no longer be on permanent "manager's special" and the fish area no longer smells like rotten fish. Aside from that... they have a lot of splainin to do. Ok, it feels weird to review a large chain supermarket, but this has been my local grocery store for the past 10 years, so I'm compelled to put in my two cents. One observation is that many of the same people have worked there for 10 years. Not only does that offer the comfort of familiar faces who greet and recognize you, but I also figure that they apparently have been loyal to the store and the management has been loyal to them for quite a while, so there must be some level of job satisfaction and security. The workers did organize at some point so I'm not sure what dirty laundry there is, but it was good to see that solidarity. But this is not a political statement- I'm just saying it's a good sign that the same people have worked there for a decade, IMHO. I like shopping here because people are actually friendly and chat with each other. Even when lines are long customers and employees tend to chat rather than acting like zombies or hiding in their smart phones. (I stopped shopping at Whole Foods in Newton because I could not stand a store full of customers refusing to make eye contact with each other). Anyway, I'm a healthy eater and can't afford to shop at Whole Foods or Harvest, but S&S suits my needs fine. I LOVE that they're guaranteed to have plantains, avocados, Goya Adobo, and inexpensive collard greens any time of the year. Of course they also have my new addiction "Pop Chips', Asian and Indian products, gourmet ice cream & gelato, food and bedding for my pet bunny, veggie-meat products, a Citizens Bank ATM, and seasonally yard waste bags or ice-melt. I've been to other stop and shops where they display at the end of each isle a laminated list of where to find items in the store. This store DOES NOT. Sometimes they are out of items, however, that is to be expected sometimes. Parking is good, and I have never had to wait very long to check out. Again, my basic complaint is I need to ask where certain items are. For a newcomer to the store, it can be somewhat difficult to find what you're looking for. read more

I shopped here for years, bcuz I lived near by. However, one day I was shopping around the produce aisle, and right near it is the Nature Promise section and there was some pepperonis hanging and one was full with MOLD! Disgusting! I took it to the manager and he was even surprise and told me he'll have someone go through that whole section over.. then, TWO WEEKS later, I run in there to buy my child some fruits, strawberries specifically are her favorite, and as she ate a few, most of them on the bottom had MOLD!! Like seriously another item with mold?? In the same area too! What pissed me off more is I went back and there was a supervisor, I believe,and she had NO reaction at all, as if she wasn't surprise.. she just look at me and ask if I wanted another one.. After having moved to the South End several months ago, I was faced with a new task, which I have only recently completed: finding a nearby Stoppie (dude, I'm FROM here) to replace the one I shopped at when I lived in Beastie. The one in Mission Hill has a terrible meat selection, (hello? No pork shoulder...ever? WTF?) no butcher on-site, and bad-news seafood like you read about. The one in South Bay center is just a hot mess. Heck, all of the South Bay center is a mess. That parking lot is a horrifying nightmare. I ranged farther afield (1.5 miles) and hit the Stoppie in Jay Pee. After my second time here, I can say that this is my new go-to grocery store. The parking lot has some pretty rough potholes, and the carts are rusted and falling apart, but what can you do about that. The produce is plentiful and fresh. Seasonal cornucopias of plums and peaches greeted me when I walked in, great sweet corn, and the usual supply of everything else. The seafood counter, manned by a real person, is full of fresh stuff - no brown salmon filets here. The meat section is where it gets its big ups from me. Everything you could possibly need! I made a beef stew with some great angus stew beef. Good dairy, good supersavers aisle. Good frozen foods... Dude, everything here works! It's not the cleanest store I've ever seen, but both times the checkout people have been WICKED friendly, even going so far as to have a chat with me while they scanned my items. You and I both know that sullen, silent teenagers are the norm. A cute woman in like behind me surprised me with nice helpfulness - picked the chicken up off the bottom of my cart and handed it to me. I didn't have any sanitation issues.
