Improving! They're switching out the freezers for new ones, and reorganizing so that the noodles and tofu are in one area, and the meats are in another area of the store. Not sure why they insist on selling months-old fruit even in discount section, it's not a great look - yes, some can save, but at what cost? The vegetable section is good; things are trimmed, usually the leaves are fairly fresh. The noodle section is also excellent, with a variety of dried noodles from various cuisines. The sliced meats are mostly too fatty; need to select for better trims (for example for hot pot). The service and help is still difficult though; the workers aren't particularly helpful so you'll need to go through and find stuff yourself. read more

This is basically the only main Asian grocery story in Allston. They are attached to a decent ramen restaurant and a small food court with very limited options. They have a free parking lot. The store looks old, but appears reasonablely clean. The selections for vegetables, seafood, and meat are okay, but a little limited for a medium sized store. I've gotten snacks, vegetables, and hot pot materials here and have been happy with the quality. They have a freezer section, meat, and seafood section in the back. The prices are okay and they have sales of various items all the time. I've been here a couple times, but at my last visit, it was really busy and I waited in a line for about 10-15 minutes and was near the front. They then decided to randomly close the cashier lane without warning or explanation and I had to wait all over again and wasted like 20 minutes at least. Also, if you don't bring your own bag, it's $1.50 for one of their bags which is quite expensive. read more

If you're looking for something Asian, this is the place. They have a wide selection of Chinese products. I wish they had fresh calamari. I usually look for noodles, tofu and water chestnuts. I had to knock them down a star because they charge .37 cents for a bag. Out of principle, I will not pay that amount for a bag. If that is the case, they should have an alternative for less. Been going to Super 88 aka Hong Kong supermarket for years now. Huge store with lots of Asian groceries from multiple countries. From produce to spice pastes and sauces to ready to eat foods to china and pots n pans. This store has everything! We usually get dumpling wrappers, rice and frozen food here and sometimes snacks. The food court is great too with lots of different food and drink vendors. I must say that several of the old food shops have closed and new ones have opened. Will definitely miss the Indian food. And Pho Viets has moved across the street so good for them. Another new place which used to be called Silk Road express is now Ali's kitchen- is a new favorite. Been there twice so far and love the cumin flavors, tender meats and hot n fresh yummy food! The chicken skewers are amazing! Must get for sure! The meat filled naan was a good portion and very tasty and filling. The big chicken plate - which we got a medium size comes with rice and is simply delicious- like a chicken stew with potatoes- so tender and amazing flavorful - I just couldn't stop eating it! Service was fairly quick and the food came out piping hot! Great that they have a parking lot which is awesome for this area. Makes it very convenient. read more

The vegetable selection a chef's heaven for different dishes. I counted all types mushrooms fresh that would make excellent different meals... don't see these at regular supermarkets. Also a 1/2 aisle dried mushrooms. Whole area for all types ramen noodles selections.. aisle of spices, another oils... ginger oil ? Not in regular markets... now I need to investigate more Asian food prep. and different vegetables options... I've been shopping here a few times a year for the past 15 years or so and I a, afraid this will be the last time. I tried to pickup couple of things for Chinese New Year and didn't want to go to Boston Chinatown because of the traffic, train, parking.... etc. I walked in and found out a lot of the restaurants in the food court are closed.. I mean closed closed. Kantin and a few others are still around but the place is empty and freezing, there was no heat. The price in Kantin was expensive too, a "rice plate" with 3 BBQ items are $12.50?? $9.50 for a single meat? I walked into the supermarket and there was not a shopping cart anywhere, only shopping basket, also freezing, no heat. I rushed and got a few things, filled the basket to the brim to left. My entire family had an outing to Super 88 recently because as my cousin posited, "The family that goes to the Chinese supermarket together, stays together." That's not even a joke. Super 88 is a bonding experience. If you've never been, I highly recommend bringing other people along to share in the stinky fun. And it is fun. And stinky.* And useful. First off, the selection of foodstuffs (by that I mean food and stuff) is just huge. We're talking everything: spices, candy, noodles, fruit, herbs, frozen dumplings, ice cream (with red bean and green tea, etc.), cooking utensils, pots and pans. All kinds of produce as well; just make sure you can tell what's fresh and what isn't, and you'll be fine. Where else were you going to get a ton of bok choy? Secondly, there aren't many other places as awesome if you're into offal. They've got beef tongues (which are horrifyingly bigger than you'd think). They've got beef feet (oddly small, when compared to the tongues). And chicken feet. And pork necks and chin bones. And chicken hearts and stomachs. Tripe, of course. Don't know what to cook all of those organs in? You're in luck! Super 88 also has more sauces and oils than any other place ever. I think there are 27 aisles full of all kinds of sauce bottles. Some of them are repeaters (oyster sauce and fish sauce appear in roughly 17 aisles each), which makes things extremely confusing especially if you can't read Chinese. But thankfully, you don't need any of those sauces. They are all rendered unnecessary because Super 88 also has All Purpose Sauce.** It serves all purposes! A small supermarket that is located off the main road in Allston. You'll be able to find a majority of your packaged items such as snacks, frozen foods and meats along with grains and dried foods. I was able to get majority of my shopping list done with a couple of frozen dumplings, snacks, drinks and rice to finish it but sadly didn't see much in the ways of seafood. No bakery either which I usually expect at other Asian supermarkets. The wait to check out was a little rough; not sure if it was a Sunday afternoon rush and everyone was looking to get some shopping done before the start of the work week or just having trouble with transactions. I've been to better supermarkets and will head to a more popular established supermarket for all my household needs. No, No, No this place has gone way down hill since they took over the Super 88 Market. very, very dirty and grubby. the stink of rotten food and fish hits you as soon as you walk in the front door. What was worse was the constant sight of spoiled produce. Dozens of flies flying around all over the Market. I was with my son we entered the meat section. We were suddenly hit with this overwhelming stench of rancid rotting meat. We ran out of the market gagging I almost lost my lunch. Sorry no photos we were in there for only about 15 minutes. Just confirmation that I'm a local who hasn't stopped at the Asian Supermarket in Allston in quite a while - I was searching on Yelp and generically online for the Super 88 Market in Allston just off the B line and couldn't find it. No, I was not interested in the one out in Malden, as that would be too far for my purposes. Ah, it has undergone some changes, a few years back, and one of them being a new name! Hong Kong Supermarket! Ah! Because they have a parking lot, I stopped here to find something to eat for dinner at their food court one yucky snow day. Parking is limited to an hour, which seems rather short should one wish to eat AND shop, but then, beggars can't be choosers! After filling my tummy, I took a walk through the freezer aisle. Don't know if I'm blind or what, but I could not for the life of me find ice cream mochi. Sad. read more

Came here to look for Chinese ingredients. This place is big and they have a huge variety not only Chinese but also Filipino, Thai ingredients. They also have hard to find ingredients such as chrysanthemum tea or packaged herbal soups that are not found at other asian supermarkets such as H-Mart. The prices are not so bad either, quite reasonable. They have a free outdoor parking lot and also a food court next door which so many asian food cuisines to choose from! Super 88 is a gem. The produce is fresh -- I've never been disappointed by the veggies I've gotten here (bok choy, enoki mushroom, pomegranates, clementines, napa cabbage, daikon, watercress, etc) -- and the prices are very reasonable (especially with occasional big sales on cabbage and daikon). I haven't been so impressed by the meat selection -- the thinly sliced pork we got was really weird. I come here mainly for vegetables and sauces. They also have a good frozen section with staples like spring roll wrappers. Overall the prices are much cheaper than the Cambridge Hmart. Just watch out for expiration dates on some of the shelf items -- many of the hotpot broths are expired when I check them. I find that my money stretches further when I shop here vs. other local Asian markets, and the produce is very fresh! read more

First time I came here the manager was showing me where to findsomething and I noticed what looked a small cat run down the isle infront of us. After a second look, I noticed it was a RAT! A big fat rat just running down the isle and neither of us acknowledged it. We were both looking at it and I couldn't decide whether I should say anything or not. And if you've read any of my other reviews then you probably guessed that I didn't say anything. Everytime I've been into the store I've found some evidence of rat infestation (please see my photots), be it chewed up bags, mini terds, or the shells of some sort of seed that's been eaten. Regardless of the fact that rats and I share the same ingredients and I probably have ingested some of their shit, 88 has such a great selection of Asian products. I mean, it is really the only Asian market in Boston, but many of these small timers don't even consider all parts of Asia when stocking their store. Ugh. I hate this place. It's dirty, the people are rude and the fact that there is practically nothing in there while they're "renovating" is terrible. I think I was about 12 or so when this 88 first opened up. My mom bought meat from there and came home and on top, the meat looked incredibly fresh. When she opened up the package, all of the meat at the bottom was spoiled and ruined. I wrote to 88 and told them about the ordeal and was replied by the manager who gave us a $100 gift certificate as an apology as well as a plead to not tell others about the incident. The great customer service was shocking to us and we returned, of course. A couple months ago, my mom bought a watermelon and when she got home, she cut it in half and it was rotten and disgusting inside. She WENT BACK to the store and asked to be refunded since she was sold a bad product and instead, they yelled at her in Chinese (we are not Chinese) and refused. The watermelon was like...$3, but it's not about the money. It's about the fact that at this point, they don't really care anymore. The fact that they're open while renovation is annoying since over the last 4 months, I have seen no difference in the renovation. The lack of space leads to a lack of food and it's a pain because I end up having to go to Chinatown to get whatever products I need. Oh well, it works out better because this place is overpriced and sucks anyway. An extra star for the convenience, but I took it away because I hate them. read more

Recently, they had renovation. That mysterious stingy odor still exists. It did *feel* it's bigger but it *looked* that everything was pushed back. Work still seems to be in progress. Since everything looks to be pushed back, each isle seems to be shorter than before. And I noticed that less variety on item on tea section. They use to stock Japanese brand tea but now they have none. Damn you, Super88. My personal "candy store" section - "Rice Island" section has been pushed away and located toward rear with reduced space and selection. Damn you, Super88 #2. Noticeable and favorable change is produce section. With existing section, they are using more floor space. Variety of produce hasn't really changed but quantity has. Unfortunately produce isn't really something I care about. When I started shopping here, I remember how excited I was about produce being so cheap. But, after hearing horror stories of tainted Chinese food product, I've become suspicious and paranoid. But don't take my word for it. Again, this is my personal paranoia. Not yours. So my first visit to Super88 after renovation was concluded with purchasing two Japanese curry roux instead of 2 shopping bagful of stuff as usual. Still good thing about this place is its location. Great Asian supermarket right in Allston! Pretty stocked full of all the goodies you want -- I came in here for some nice mangos, Asian sauces (soy sauce, rice vinegar, marinades, oyster sauce) and was so happy with my options. The produce can be a little tricky though, some of the fruit are mushed so yo have to make sure you pick some nice ones. The back area is a little fishy smelling, but it's stocked full of frozen foods like meatballs. The cashiers are efficient and nice too - i didn't know about a fruit promotion so she told me to go grab another one and it cost me even less! read more

Honestly this is the best Asian market I have been to. You can find everything Asian: from the kinds of vegetables that are only used in Asian food to a large variety of spices. Their selection of fish and meat is great! I would t say the quality is as fresh as those in Star Market or Shaw's, but the they are all very affordable. They have all kinds of snacks and chips that only are actually popular in Asia ( by the way, when I say Asia here, I refer to Japan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Thai Land). They have a section that sells kitchen supplies, which are amazingly cheap. Even if you don't make Asian food at home, just the meat and the vegetables options at such price here would make your budget happy. In the same building, they also have the 88 food court. There is a great variety: Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai etc. It's very convinient to go have lunch or dinner and then go shopping. The food court is always crowded, as far as I can see everytime I do grocery shopping here. Large parking spot! Very convinient location. I discovered this place through a friend and my love of ramen. The food court looks updated, generally clean, and is quiet. There are around five to six options to choose from that are good that serve the typical Asian fare. I had a spicy, build-it-yourself meal that included steak and chicken that was served with bean sprouts and spicy chili sauce. It was fantastic! The market itself looks as if it's stuck in 1986. It's slightly run down, has a slight smell (there are a few comments stating that it smells rancid. I have not experienced this as of yet, though it does smell slightly of fish). Bright white light bulbs, white tile floors, rows upon rows of shelving, and hidden little back areas do not help this place's appearance. Some items are left in bulk. However, this place has a sort of nostalgic charm that I enjoy. While all of the packaged items have their listed expiration dates, which this place may or may not keep tabs on, you need to watch out for the produce. Personally, I do not buy vegetables or meats here, as I do not know their quality, nor if they are good or not. There are reviews that state Hong Kong Market's (Used to be Super 88???) produce is not up to par, and that's disappointing. There is a section in the back with live stone crabs and live tilapia. There are A LOT of these two; though, again, I am not sure of their quality, nor how each is kept. There is an array of countries represented in this market, though it is separated (like normal markets) by type of foodstuff, not by country. Certain foodstuffs of a country are listed and kept in certain areas within their designation but are not separate entirely. You can find everything from obscure spices to those cute little Pokémon chocolates in this place. It really does have a lot. The upside of this place is the price and selection. Their selection is massive, as mentioned before. If the quality is good/the expiration date is still viable, Hong Kong Market does everything in their power to make this the cheapest market of all time. I spent $50 on groceries that would have cost me $150 anywhere else. It's ridiculous. That being said, all of my food was of good quality and I discovered some items that I had not seen in other oriental markets. I will be coming back here, though I just wish that they were a bit more attentive to certain aspects of their business. This is the place I go to to stock up on my Chinese food! Great place for frozen dumplings, ramen, drinks, snacks, sauces, and kitchen stuff. Their bowls and kitchen supplies are all very reasonably priced. My only complaint is that sometimes their freezers aren't set at a very cold temperature, which makes some of the frozen goods on the outside melt. I always make sure I grab a bag from a freezer that is actually cold. Not sure why this place is never busy, but I'm not complaining. read more

The store has been bought by Hong King supermarket which I think is a turn for the better. When I first shopped here about a year ago, the place was pretty sparsely stocked. The kimchi was always out, the dry goods were not always available (for example, when I went to go get rice vinegar about a month ago, they only had one brand. Thinking that it doesn't really matter, I picked it up - it smelled like feet and tasted even worse. I had no idea brand mattered so much, but today they had my favorite rice wine vinegar and a whole bunch of others)s. Today's trip got me all excited because there are definitely more goods. The rice wine vinegar, as mentioned above, a lot more japanese sauces, and some more Korean stuff too. There are a lot more rice cookers as well. I think you'll be able to find much more and there's no need to go down to Chinatown, esp since this store is much more spacious and a lot less crowded. Of course the food court rocks too and there's parking. The only thing that really hasn't changed is the quality of the produce. It's hit or miss. Today I found some awesome napa cabbage and snow pea sprouts (only 3.99 a pound! I've paid up to 6.99 a pound in the winter cuz I love them so much) but the onions were pretty disgusting. A Chinese grocery store and food court conveniently located in college hub! Has a small parking lot but its very tight so please be careful parking. Also, if you park in the far back of the parking lot, you may get more space but its next to the dumpster and at times, it may get stinky.... The only food stall I visit is the Korean place, has tasty wings and one of the only places in the Allston area with kimbap! Super nice and friendly staff, they really go the extra mile if they aren't too busy! One of the staff helped me pack my bubble tea, from another place, in my take out, customer service is up there! The market is small compared to the markets in Chinatown. Less produce variety and definitely a bit pricier than Chinatown. Most produce I've seen is also not as fresh, I only get produce here as a last resort, when I'm too lazy to go to Chinatown. Sometimes there are birds that get into here so please dont be too surprised if you hear chirping. read more

If you're expecting great service/fresh produce, I would recommend that you walk right past this place and head over to star market down the street. The lady checking us out threw everything after she scanned them, proceeded to burst open our tofu and when we pointed out that it was leaking, she said "no problem. there's nothing wrong.".... clearly, there is something wrong when the box of tofu no longer has tofu juice/liquid in it and it's all over the counter. You get the picture. The food court is awesome & spacious - you can get anything from Indian food to Korean food. My personal favorite is the spicy popcorn chicken from lollicup. Otherwise it's not the nicest supermarket and seems dirty and has strong smells throughout. A bit wary of meat/fish here because I can't tell if it's been sitting out for too long. I stick to mostly packaged goods. If I lived closer to H mart or C-mart in the south end I would go to those over HK supermarket. read more

Rude staff, expired food, room temperature frozen meat. Stay away! I used to be a frequent costumer here back when I was living in the area and under a different management. First time back in a few year and this place had gone downhill. I asked the staff where to find a shopping cart, and the staff member, literally, turned to her friends and said, "Just ignore him" in Chinese. (I don't look like someone who knows Chinese, but I do.) Going on the meat section, it was literally gross. vacuum sealed chicken legs (RAW!) are warm to the touch, soaking its own blood! Most of the raw meat are soaking in some sort of red liquid. Their "Fresh beef" are all in a super dry with bright reddish tint, obviously chemically treated, feels funny to the touch. The seafood section was even more gross, the fish was in varies stages of decomposition, the prices are low for a reason. feel sorry for the people who fallen for this scam. Frozen seafood was melted and then refrozen. Most of their inventory needed to be thrown out but they try to move it for cheap, they are taking a chance with their costumer's health. On my way out I got berated again for moving to slowly. Terrible experience. Food prices are cheap if you enjoy eating rotten food. The cashier is so......rude!!! The cashier charged me Twice on one item. When I found this mistake and told her, she had an extremely irritated look on her face. I think this is her fault. At least she needs to say Sorry. However she never said a single Sorry. Instead of refunding me for this overcharge, she was so..... impatient that she even asked me to get one more for the extra charged item.
