March 2024 - (adding to the review that we did in January before my parents moved in) we were very…read moreexcited about the opportunity to have my mom & dad stay close by at Provision Living in Oshtemo. It has fully met our expectations, and has even gone above and beyond. All of the staff have been wonderful, and the personal care that has been exhibited has been exceptional. Darkisha, and the medical staff she runs have been on top of everything and made sure that both our parents get all the care that they need. All of the front office staff have been accommodating and quickly respond to any needs or unusual situations. There are also an array of activities that they can participate in. They love the movies and the treat cart the most, but also do chair yoga, exercise circles, go on outings and can have easy access to their car when needed. My dad has been very excited about the food and doesn't miss a meal. It is all served restaurant style with lots of choices. My mom loves the food too but her memory issues have her missing a few meals from time to time. But the staff has helped work with us to make sure she gets adequate nutrition. The room/appartment itself has been really nice. We brought in a lot of familiar items to make it feel like home and within one week my parents were both stating how happy they were with their new home. This is also one of the few places who would allow them to keep their cat, and this has helped with the transition and feeling of homeyness. We had our one month review today and getting the information from the high tech sensors that help pick up activity, restlessness, breathing, heart rates, walking skills, and other elements was amazing. While the images are heat sensor images so you can't see any faces. It's great to see how much important information this provides on their activity and healthy living. We absolutely love-love-love the AI sensors! We remain confident that we made the absolute best decision for our family with Provision Living.

It saddens me that the facility director does not care even though I brought it to her attention. Unfortunately I am not able to take them out of this place. All I can do is bring it to their attention. Please see the attached picture of the director's Facebook page. She is incredibly unprofessional. I was appalled by what I read. How can a company employ such an uncaring individual. Would you want YOUR loved one there??? DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!

She was a pain in the ass.". Wow. Unkind, & unprofessional. This comment tells me that management doesn't want & doesn't like being bothered by advocates for their residents' care. It's been my experience that, when made aware of things that are being overlooked, companies are glad that you've made it known. "It makes us better", said one. Clearly, the Executive Director doesn't feel that way, & isn't used to dealing with family members who advocate for their loved ones. She feels they're a pain in the ass. So keep this in mind when you're looking at & considering placing your loved one at North Woods Village.

I was greatest kindly when I arrived and asked to sign a check in log stating my business and the time I arrived. I very much appreciate that process is in place. I arrived early and was offered tea, coffee, or water while I waited. I was given freedom to look around the facility while I waited if I was interested in doing so. I found myself drawn to this really fun finch enclosure where you can watch the birds play. It was in the library and board game area. The facility was bright, well lit, clean, smelled great and marked with directional signs everywhere. When my scheduled time arrived for my tour I was greeted by Kristin with smiles and a welcoming handshake. She was very knowledgeable on the property and provided me with physical informational documents to take as well as information during our tour. Both the studio and one bedroom were in great condition. I appreciated that the balconies were cement not wood so it provided a safer more sturdy feeling. The dinning hall was also very impressive. The room itself had high ceilings with great architecture. Overall great trip and lots to think about.

Hopefully our experience will save another family from frustration and wasted time applying at…read moreHawthorn Landing at Heritage Community Kalamazoo. Heritage Community Kalamazoo is comprised of different buildings, each with their own level of comfort and care. We can only speak to our experience at Hawthorn Landing, which is the mid- to low-income assisted living facility. Hawthorn Landing initially checked all of our boxes. Clean, safe, uplifting community with good reviews Availability of high quality care now and in the future all on one campus - assisted living, memory care, acute rehab, skilled nursing, hospice, etc. A guarantee via the "Benevolent care program" that even when our dad's money runs out, that he will be able to remain in the home he's made with the community he's built Everything looked great, but then the Red Flags started flying: Red Flag #1: Zero Financial Transparency - We asked for more information about the solvency of the "Benevolent care program" and were told that they don't share that information. Which is odd, because as a charitable trust, this info is publicly available. IRS.gov / Charities and Nonprofits / Tax Exempt Organization Search via their EIN: 38-2775795 Red Flag #2: Trust Me Bro - In order for our dad to be accepted at Hawthorn Landing and, to our understanding, for him to be eligible for financial assistance via the "Benevolent care program" we had to demonstrate that he had savings and income that would enable him to pay full price rent of $4.5K for at least 5 years. The financials passed and we asked that Hawthorn Landing provide something in writing stating that, having demonstrated financial solvency, that our dad is eligible for financial assistance via the "Benevolent care program". Sales and Finance told us "not to worry about that" and "that's not how we do business" and "we can't make changes to the current contract" and basically, trust me, bro. Saying that your organization is committed to supporting its residents, and that you all review resident needs on a case by case basis is all well and good, but 5 years down the road those are empty promises by someone who no longer works here. Contracts hold folks accountable - so why they don't have one for the "Benevolent care program" for Hawthorn Landing residents? Red Flag #3: Month-to-Month - Regarding contracts, the only contract that the resident / family signs with Hawthorn Landing is a month-to-month rental agreement. Meaning that if Hawthorn Landing should ever need to evict a resident, or residents, they can do so with little to no notice. Found old Google reviews, which sound like Heritage Community Kalamazoo has done at least one mass eviction a few years ago. There is nothing preventing them from doing this again. Red Flag #4: Non-smokers only - On our initial tour, Sales told us that our dad could continue to smoke, just as long as he did so off-campus. We had begun making arrangements to get our dad a Rascal so that he could scoot off campus to light up. A few weeks later, a Care Coordinator met with our dad IRL and said that unless our dad committed to quitting smoking, Hawthorn wasn't the right place for him. We discussed this with our dad and he was on board with quitting. We told Sales who then moved the goalpost again - Dad committing to quit isn't enough, he would need to quit smoking in earnest over the next 30 days, then they will re-assess him and evaluate how his smoking cessation was progressing, and then they would decide if they would accept him or not. So, over the course of one week, our dad and our family experienced whiplash - Dad can smoke, Dad needs to quit, Dad needs to prove he's tobacco free (?). What? Red Flag #5: Toxic Work Environment and Stonewalling - After the whiplash, Sales offered to arrange a call between our family and the Executive Director and Care Team to provide details and requirements for our dad's smoking cessation. But the Executive Director sent an email to Sales stating "I thought I made myself perfectly clear, we will reassess after a month," and said that she had no desire to speak with us. Wow. UPDATE: The Sales Director did reach out to apologize and offer an olive branch saying that he can get the ED to talk with us., but frankly, the bloom is off the rose. There have been so so so many red flags, we can't in good conscience overlook all of these glaring issues and put dad into a place that's this much of a mess. We just hope that our experience helps other families considering a move here to avoid confusion, miscommunication and lost time. And we hope that publicly posting our experience will get the attention of the board of directors and leadership team at Hawthorn Landing at Heritage Community Kalamazoo regarding the systemic and structural failures present in their system.
