This inept police department refused to charge the driver with a hit and run, and did not search their car, despite the driver swapping with a passenger before fleeing the scene. Multiple witnesses offered this information, yet the police did nothing. They also had no insurance, and they were allowed to leave the scene with no insurance, despite telling the police the power steering was out in their car. So this police officer put an unsafe vehicle and a known uninsured driver on the street, possibly under the influence. I've never understood this notion of "defund the police" but situations like this certainly give it perspective.

My experience w TPD at various times over a 50 year span has been great. Grew up here and moved back on very snowy December day in 1995. My wife was driving on Howe rd with our infant child and 5 year old when an inexperienced driver driving way too fast slammed the car from the rear, totally our new car and scaring the kids pretty bad. Officers were kind , helpful, professional, gave my son a teddy bear ( he named "Crash"). Since then we've had other incidents- medical emergencies, parolee in the neighborhood, accidents etc. I also interact w TPD staff periodically professionally. Always professional, efficient, polite men and women who seem to seriously " get" the idea of public service.

Kent is a wonderful place, a tiny little underrated and yet infamous Ohio town which is full of life, particularly from the large college student population. This NE OH destination has come a long way since the days of the University uprisings, and is , but still one of my fave towns in Ohio. There are several good bubble tea shops here and places to eat, and lots of little gems to be unearthed around the town. It also has some of the cheapest petrol anywhere in the North East USA. Also a shout out to my friends Amber and Matt that live around here, which is the reason I'm here so often.

This is marker number 8-67 and it was erected in 2006 by Kent State University and The Ohio Historical Society. Parking is a challenge. I stayed briefly when there were no classes going on so I did not have any trouble. On the front, it reads, "In 1968, Richard Nixon won the presidency partly based on a campaign promise to end the Vietnam War. Though the war seemed to be winding down, on April 30, 1970, Nixon announced the invasion of Cambodia, triggering protests across college campuses. On Friday, May 1, an anti-war rally was held on the Commons at Kent State University. Protestors called for another rally to be held Monday, May 4. Disturbances in downtown Kent that night caused city officials to ask Governor James Rhodes to send the Ohio National Guard to maintain order. Troops put on alert Saturday afternoon were called to campus Saturday evening after an ROTC building was set on fire. Sunday morning in a press conference that was also broadcast to the troops on campus, Rhodes vowed to "eradicate the problem" of protests at Kent State." And on the reverse, "On Sunday May 4, 1970, Kent State students protested on the Commons regarding the U.S. invasion of Cambodia and the presence of the National Guard to campus to quell demonstrations. Guard troops advanced, driving students past Taylor Hall. A small group of protestors taunted the Guard from the Prentice Hall parking lot. The National Guard marched back to the Pagoda where members of Company A, 145th Infantry, and Troop G, 107th Armored Cavalry, turned and fired 61-67 shots during the thirteen seconds. Four students were killed, Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer, and William Schroeder. Nine students were wounded -Alan Canfora, John Clearly, Thomas Grace, Dean Kahler, Joseph Lewis, D. Scott MacKenzie, James Russell, Robert Stamps, and Douglas Wrentmore. Those shot were 20 to 245 yards away from the Guard. Now this is a touchy subject but it is so damn hard to find the right help in this world that I…read morecouldn't help but share this. I have been in & out of counseling (for various reasons) since I was 9. Over the years, however, I have become a victim of multiple acts of sexual violence. I have tried almost everything in a desperate search for some closure/help ; anti-depressants, homeopathic remedies, individual and group counseling, etc... without any success. And then one day I unexpectedly found an add for a free unanimous support group for women who have been a victim of sexual violence & thought "Why not"? All I can say is "Wow"! Not just anyone is invited into the group (you are interviewed) and it is not a form of counseling! Instead, it is a group focused on educating you (or helping you to educate others) about the common myths surrounding sexual abuse, how and where to get help, and most importantly how to find positive coping skills through individual and group exercises. Sadly, at the time, this program was funded through a grant and therefore only lasted several weeks. It didn't solve all of my problems but compared to any other method I have tried this was the very first time I didn't feel completely alone. There has been other similar groups afterwards (one opening up soon) that I couldn't attend due to work but if you can go- GO!!!! It doesn't matter who, what, where, why, when or how... they are truly there to help you. The only complaint I have is that they do have a group counselor for both men & women of sexual violence and she is a b**ch! But the staff who hosted the group I participated in are amazing! I know it's not an easy step to take and it may or may not help you but we are a horrifically increasing crowd- if not for yourself than do it for the men & women of the future in hopes of stopping the violence.
