You're probably not going to spend a ton of time in your hotel room in Venice. You'll traverse…read moreevery bridge, gape at the beautiful majesty and charm of the architecture, and eyeball the gondolas going by like you're the Mayans seeing a boat for the fist time at Cortes landing. So, do you really need to see Venice out of the window you close and block with the drapes as you dive into bed, full of pasta, and having walked the entire circumference of the island while stopping to alternate sipping Chianti and Peronis? Do yourself a favor & skip the $500 a night hotel and stay a quick walk from the train station at Hotel San Geremia - yes there are no taxis so you'll be pushing your roller board over the cobbles. It was $170 a night at the San Geremia. I promise you won't wish you spent 3x as much at 1am when the only thing more you want to see in Venice is the back of your eyelids. The hotel is clean, it's easy to get to, it's no frills but you'll give no cares.

We had a double room on the 3rd floor (Room 322), it had a double bed and 1 twin bed. The windows faced the courtyard, which is really nice because there was a view and we could open our windows at night to listen to the live music playing from the courtyard (aka plaza) downstairs. Bed was clean. Walls were painted red. Bathroom was small, but it was modern! Shower screens were glass, and sink was modern and worked! It was all compacted into a small space that is typical of all Italian hotels. The drawback of this hotel was = NO TV. Not sure what happened here, but our room didn't have a TV. I guess they assumed that no one would be watching TV in Venice anyways, since there's so much to explore outside of your hotel room. They were right. :) Also, while they claimed that there was FREE wi-fi throughout the hotel, we couldn't get ANY wi-fi reception beyond the 2nd floor. If you're desperately in need of wi-fi from your room, I'd recommend that you ask for a room on the 1st or 2nd floor, because there was no connectivity on the 3rd floor and beyond. No elevators, so everyone had to lug their suitcases up 3 flights of stairs. Just keep that in mind when requesting your room! Breakfast is not included at this hotel; however, they give you a 50% off voucher to go to the cafe next door to buy pastries/coffee/drinks, if you'd like. We didn't end up using the voucher, so not sure whether the breakfast cafe is any good. Receptionist personnel were nice, friendly, and could provide you with maps + instructions on how to get to the airport bus, etc. What I liked most about this hotel was that proximity to the vaparetto stations and the closeness to the bus / train terminal. It was just a mere 5-10 minute walk to all transit centers! :) If I were to come back to Venice again, I wouldn't mind staying here for a no-frills, budget-friendly, and modern/clean/well-maintained hotel. One suggestion -- Please work on getting wi-fi to the top floors as well!!! :)

We decided to get the daily passes (48€/2 day pass) because we thought we would be using them to travel around a lot. In retrospect this was a mistake and we would have saved money just getting the ticket into town and the ticket to the train station. This was the most I paid for public transportation in any of the European cities for the least amount of time I spent in the city. To add insult to injury, the Vaporetto, or the waterbus, were crowded and at times barely admitted any new passengers on at the stop. At our stop we waited for over an hour to get onto a waterbus. It delayed our plans and set back everything for our time in Venice. On the day we left, we saw some other people who were first in line be denied getting on the boat if they have luggage. The rules are so inconsistent with no rhyme or reason. If you find yourself depending on these vaporetto during your visit, make sure to leave ample time for cushion so you don't get stranded or miss a flight or the train. Honestly you might be better off walking. Because driving is not an option -- there are no cars on the Venice islands.

Note that there are 3rd party sellers, so careful…read morewhen buying, because we saw one for 50€ that included taxi and restaurant discounts, that wasn't sold by ACTV. The pass can be used in land and on the island. Once we received the email we walked up to a Kiosk to figure out how to redeem it. The QR code that was included in the email did not work. We had to type in the confirmation code. Once the screen prompted the tickets. We selected and printed them out without issues. If you're on the island there's actual customer service kiosk you could go to and speak to someone. We were able to use the card to take the bus, and Vaporetto. We did not get a chance to use the Lido. Google Maps is super helpful, but I would strongly suggest looking at the screen, and map that is near each pickup location. We boarded one of the buses at 11:30pm, which ended up taking us 2 cities away from Venice, and was one stop away from calling it a night. They don't loop back to where they picked you up. Since the bus did not run again until 4:30am. We had to take an uber black back to Mestre. Expensive lesson learned. When you board a bus, or get ready to enter the vaporetto line. Scan the card without having your finger or hand over it. I made the mistake of doing that a few times and so it took a couple tries before it actually scanned. As for riding on the bus and/or vaporetto. It can get PACKED. Depending on the stop and time. If you're the first on the bus. You'll find a seat, but they have the AC off so it's HOT. Depending on time of the year of course. If you're one of the last to board. Expect to stand and hold on to something. It's definitely a cheaper way to get around, but if you're looking for comfort and space. Book a taxi, or water taxi to get around instead.

The hotel has some curtains but it's difficult to close the curtains so neighbors can often see into your room. We had to use a hair clip to hold the curtains closed. Room 315 was very very small and was as big as my walk in closet. It barely fit the bed itself. The tv was small and the safe was too difficult to operate since it was semi mechanical. The only good thing was the shower. Breakfast was mediocre with very runny eggs and under cooked bacon. Staff was friendly and nice. They use old hotel keys with heavy key chains for all rooms. We would not recommend this place unless you get a front facing room.

All the other hotels were we stayed the luggage was waiting for us when we entered the room. The mattress was kind of odd. The side I slept on was slanted so I felt like I was about to roll off. My daughter woke up at 2 am to what sounded like somebody trying to get into our room. That didn't make for a pleasant nights sleep for her. For some reason this place likes to keep their windows in the room and hallway open. As a result, the rooms have mosquitoes. So we woke up with mosquito bites. We both had 4 or more bites. I had 3 of them on my face. This led to interesting breakfast discussions, where a lot of people were talking about how many bites they woke up with. Breakfast was OK but check your drinking glass. I was about to drink my juice when I saw lipstick marks on the edge of my glass. I went back to get another one, and found two more dirty glasses. Yuk! Once again, breakfast was lukewarm and they didn't have a lot to offer. The breakfast area was very small and crowded with two tour groups occupying the room. Also, the tables weren't being cleaned quickly enough to accommodate all the people that wanted to be seated. They do their room keys like back in the 50s. Every time you leave the hotel, you're required to hand in your key and pick it up when you return. Unfortunately, when there are a lot of tour groups in the hotel, the lines are long and there was only one person working the desk. We waited 13 minutes just to turn in our key so we could leave in the morning. However, the hotel is in a good location. If you're coming in by train the station is on the other side of the canal along with the water taxis. You can rent gondolas right in front of the hotel and it's about a 28 minute walk from Saint Marks Square.

Considering the price was so reasonable, I didn't expect such nice accommodations but we were pleasantly surprised! Everything felt modern and minimalist. The staff was also extremely helpful. Alvise was great in answering questions, always smiling and very good in guiding us places to eat, catch water bus, gondola service etc. We reached an hour early and lucky to get a room. Checked in without any issues and went to get some good and sightseeing. Rooms are maintained well. We had a queen bed , with 2 additional twin beds. The wifi is great in the hotel rooms. The shower had nice flow and very spacious bathrooms. Everything is maintained really well. We had a situation with Ac and the staff at night time cane and assisted us out. The breakfast was fabulous best so far we had in hotels. It was a grand buffet. The luggage storage rooms came handy, and we enjoyed the stay and will definitely consider it again.

During my recent stay in Venice, I reserved the Hotel Abbazia as it was one of the best locations near the Santa Lucia Railway Station. Literally, the hotel was 700 ft from the station, down an alleyway as I passed several restaurants; you can't beat the convenience and the price! For a budget hotel, this was a simple and decent stay--the room offers a small flat-screen TV, iron board and hairdryer, mini-refrigerator and air conditioner, and a hard ol' mattress queen bed, not the most comfortable bed but it was doable for the time that I spent there. The only thing it didn't offer was a damn elevator; BOO! Good thing for friends because my homegirl and her boyfriend were able to take my heavy ass suitcase up to the second floor or else a sista' would have been struggling! The hallways to the bedrooms were this sexy red lighting that automatically came on when it sensed any movement. I liked it but I sensed that my friends thought it was pretty creepy. The hotel offers a beautiful elegant dining/bar area with a gorgeous chandelier. This is also where free breakfast is served in the morning. I hear breakfast offered an array of different pastries and fruit. If you have time to eat breakfast, I would give it a shot. Make sure you also check out the back-garden seating area. It's perfect for enjoying your breakfast in the morning or coming out to get some fresh air. The staff during the evening was nice, however, I felt that the gentleman became irritated with me as the bedroom door had slammed shut on me as I was walking my friends out of my bedroom, and it just so happened that I had left my keys in the room. Also, just like similar hotels in Italy, the air conditioners turn off after a certain time, making these rooms stuffy. The only option I had was to open the window; UGH. The rooms are quiet, I couldn't hear my neighbors at all. The bathroom was super small, and the showers were not the best. The water temperature only provided cold water; BOO! You can tell the facility is a little outdated and needs some TLC. Within the area alone, there are varies different restaurants. Once you walk out of the hotel, you are right in front of all the activities. You can take a Water Boat to any side of Venice, or you can do what I did and just walk the whole City as its pretty doable to do in 8 hours. There are also bars all throughout the area, making for a great night. If you are looking for more of a convenient hotel near the station and close to many of the landmarks in Venice, I would definitely recommend this hotel if you are staying for less than 2 nights. P.S-If you are planning to leave your luggage at this hotel as you roam the Venice area, please note that this hotel doesn't lock the door to the luggage room. Make sure you take your valuables with you.

Our tour guide was excellent. He explained the sights and took us through the less touristy areas which was awesome because we experienced the city like locals. It was a wonderful hour long ride and very well worth the price. There's no way we would've covered so much on gondolas and we would've paid double! So glad we experienced the canals with Avventure Bellissime. I recommend them and look forward to taking another tour with them on a return visit!
