Avoid Strata Credit Union at All Costs After over 15 years as a customer -- and with parents who have banked here most of their lives -- I can confidently say I would never recommend Strata Credit Union to anyone. Not friends, not family, not even strangers asking for directions to the nearest ATM. Strata has repeatedly proven that customer service is not a priority -- and after today, it's clear that customer retention isn't either. The problems with Strata have been ongoing for years and it is why I haven't relied on them as my primary bank. Their customer service has always been subpar, but the lack of professionalism and indifference from their employees has somehow only gotten worse. When my mother recently visited to use the coin machine, it was out of coins. Instead of resolving the issue promptly and respectfully, the representative took their time, offered no explanation, and didn't even extend a basic apology. That's not just bad service -- it's a complete disregard for the people who keep their doors open. Their digital platforms are just as disappointing. The mobile app is clunky and anything but user-friendly, and I've experienced multiple issues even trying to move money around through the desktop portal. It's as if they're going out of their way to make everyday banking difficult. But today was the final straw. I brought in a large check from a home sale and needed it to clear within 3 business days. That's a perfectly reasonable request -- one that many banks would accommodate without issue. But not Strata. They insisted on holding it for five business days, pushing availability into the next week, with zero flexibility or concern for my circumstances. No apology, no effort to de-escalate -- just blank stares and bureaucratic stonewalling. And when I told the representative I would be taking my business to Wells Fargo? She responded with a casual "ok, sounds good." That's the level of disinterest we're dealing with here. Strata Credit Union doesn't care about its customers, and clearly, neither do its employees. They lost a large deposit today -- and with it, any future business or referrals I might have sent their way. After a decade and a half of loyalty, I'm walking away -- and I strongly urge others to think twice before trusting Strata with your financial needs. You deserve better. We all do. read more

I've been trying to call the bank and talk to a human being for an hour and no one is answering. Not a loan person or call center person. For the call center it's waiting in silence for 15 minutes after being told by an automated voice that the wait is going to be only one minute and my "call is important to them". There is no ringing sound to let me know it's actually making a call. I'm so angry right now. I'm calling at 2:30PM on a Friday. This was and still is ( literally against my will) my first bank. My grandmother banked with strata before she passed, they literally took her debit card and wouldn't give her access to her account or any possible way to get it back. She had to have other people drive her to the bank ,because she was dying of cancer, To pull out HER money to pay bills and get groceries. I joined before this happened and had already financed my first car through them and am still paying that off. Anyways, I had a problem with my card when someone gave me a bad check. Instead of telling me what was wrong and fixing the problem they locked my card and my account. When I went in to fix the issue (because again, I was not informed of any issue) They told me I would not be getting my card back and would not give me any information on what I could do to resolve this issue. Again, I still have a car payment through them that I apparently can't switch to another bank due to my lack of access. I cant cash a check safely, cant use my debit card, cant get direct deposit and cant do anything to fix this till my car is fully payed off. Im beyond frustrated and scared at how trapped Ive been by this establishment. If you take anything from this it should be to NEVER USE THIS BANK. One problem and you suddenly have no control over your own finances, and believe me, its an absolutely horrible experience. read more

Held responsible? It's an honest mistake but I don't believe I should have been held liable for the staffs miscount. This is a credit union and I'm sure they have coverage for these situations. My husband and I withdrew a large amount to buy a classic car, the teller counted out our cash and label/banded it. We get a call a week later stating the teller put an extra $300 in a stash and they would be deducting from our account. We explained that we had trusted the first counting and gave that amount to the car owner. There was no way to receive those funds back and now we were liable for the miscount. My online account has been locked even after I have paid the loan payment. I have spoke with two extremely rude associates over the phone that have refused to let me speak with the owner. This is unacceptable and ridiculous! I am currently scouting other credit institutions and will making a changed within the next few weeks. When I walk in everyone says hi (even if they have clients) and when I leave everyone says bye (even if they have clients) writing this I can see how someone could portray this as negative. But it feels good getting greeted when I walk in and it feels good being told goodbye by the whole bank. Strata just makes me feel special. They're staff in the buildings have always been polite and helpful, it's the follow up that is non existent. I've used them for a few months now and have come to realize that you cannot expect any follow up, return emails or calls from this business. They do offer good product but if you want to get anything done you have to go in person every time. They never even get the messages you leave with their call center. Bank somewhere else! Do not try to get any home loan products from this place. I applied online for a home loan refi one week ago and have received no response whatsoever from the numerous emails, voicemails, and in-house urgent messages left with Ashley (their only mortgage loan officer). I've been trying to cancel the loan and I can't get verification that my messages were received. During this time I also tried to do a balance transfer with my credit card, which I've done by phone in the past, and the csr had no idea what I was talking about. I had to tell her to go ask someone else about it and she came back to say "we can't do that by phone anymore, you can try online". I just called again and was told their computers are down so they can't transfer me to the mortgage dept because they can't pull up the contact info. This CU has become a joke. read more

I am starting to regreat opening an account with strata. I admit the staff is very nice and polite. I made a deposit with a payroll check from the federal government who is my employer,It's ​ have been over a week for them to release my funds so I can pay my bills. I have called there customer and I get the same garbage, unfortunately we cannot do anything. Strata Credit Union - Banks & Credit Unions Near Me - Bakersfield, California

Let me start this by saying, I have had accounts with this bank dating back to 2007. I currently have 9 different accounts with them between our business, personal, credit cards, and auto loans. I am so frustrated with the recent lack of customer service at the Riverlakes Branch. A couple of the new employees have been rude to both my husband and I on different occasions. Today, I sat in the drive through for 20 minutes after sending them my deposit without anyone saying a word. No "I'll be right with you," or "I'm sorry we are a tad busy, we will be with you in a moment." NOTHING. I know they knew I was there because I had already sent my deposit in the tube and I drive a diesel that was idling in the background, and there is no way you can't hear that engine. I completely understand if they were busy, but there is no excuse not to at least say we will be right with you. This isn't even the first time this has happened. This happened to me earlier this summer as well, but I tried my best to overlook it and hoped it wouldn't happen again. I take deposits to the bank at least three times a week from our business, so most of the older employees knew me by name because I came in so often. Some didn't even need to ask for our account number. I am not sure if those employees moved to their other branch or left the company, because they are all gone now. We loved when Amber was the manager at this branch. She always helped us with any issues and was always friendly with a smile. I used to love our bank, not so much anymore. If this kind of thing keeps up, we are definitely considering taking our very large amount of business elsewhere. read more

Quite possibly the worst overall banking experience ever imaginable.. everything you could ever want in a bank when it comes to online banking, phone support, competency. Strata manages to do the complete opposite.. it's almost impossible to spend your own money with this bank.. worrying about online transactions constantly getting cancelled with no notice from the bank.. I'm all about security but they don't even reach out or send a message to see if a transaction was possibly fraudulent.. need to raise your daily spending amount to make a big purchase or put a down payment on something?? Better do it Mon-Fri during normal business hours.. "24 hour support" can't help you with that they're just an answering service.. it's a ridiculous and embarrassing feeling walking up to pay for something and wondering if you card is going to be declined for no reason.. for the record the people inside the bank have always been helpful but I shouldn't have to go into the bank every time I want to spend MY MONEY! This is an update on my review. I received a call right after I left my first review and was told the check was mailed out on the 20th. That was almost 2 weeks ago. I was then told if I didn't receive my check to call Wednesday morning and they would overnight a check. Well today is Wednesday I called first this and big surprise nobody answered. I left a voicemail and called 3 more times. No luck. I will be reporting to the consumer finance with the government. read more

There is always hardly any tellers, always a line and slow. Their call center isnt worth a crap, you call with an issue and always have to end up going in to resolve your issue same with their online messaging system. I've used both on different occasions and in the end I had to go in and deal with it. Their phone app is outdated and only good for checking your balance and transferring money to different accounts. Dont try to deposit a check through the app it wont clear and you'll have to come in and do it yourself. The ATMs dont take check deposits most of the time either, trying to deposit a check through the ATM will only result in, yep you guessed it, waiting until they are open until you can go in and deposit it. This place is a pain I banked with them for 10+ years stayed because I felt some type of loyalty, however, I was just another number. Seriously take your business else where. read more

I've been a member for the past 3 years and I'm so impressed whenever I go in they say hello to me by name! I've never had an issue with anything and now have my car loan through them. With the new checking account they offer I get reimbursed for any ATM fees so that's a plus. read more

I like this place because my check deposits like four days early so that's a plus. There isn't many locations and their mobile app takes a shit more often than I would like and that's a minus. The lines move fast and one of the locations is open on Saturday so all in all I'm satisfied with banking here. read more

I have always been very impressed by the service provided by Kern Federal Credit Union, having been a member for over 30 years. Recently the credit union updated both their website and bill pay service. Although I had always been pleased by the ease of use of the bill pay service provided, I had no reason to expect anything less than a more user friendly upgrade. To say I've been disappointed is an understatement. I find myself angry and feeling disillusioned. The rollout of the new system was fraught with issues and it took several days to be able to access the bill pay webpage. We had initially been informed the server would be down for a matter of hours. After the bill pay server was "rebooted," numerous vendors I had set up for automatic bill pay had to be reloaded, and the issues didn't stop there. Eventually I noticed my bills were being paid much later than they had in 5e past, regardless of whether a check was cut or there was an electronic transfer, to the point where my mortgage payment was late, requiring the payment of an additional fee and I was informed by the credit union I did not qualify for any type of reimbursement. My car insurance was also cancelled because the check cut for that payment did not have the necessary information on it. I was also charged a fee to reinstate my car insurance. I have a feeling the credit union contracted with a bill pay server which is not qualified to handle the needs of the credit unions customers. I'm also going to make the assumption this server is probably less expensive than the service provided in the past. As a customer, I feel I have the right to expect an upgrade to provide more effective and/or efficient service and this is definitely not the case. This "upgrade" has been mishandled from its initial download and continues to be mishandled. I'm pretty frustrated. read more

Customer service at the Riverlakes branch continues to be an issue. Most of the tellers are nice, but they are always understaffed and the drive through is a joke. Do not have a drive through if you do not have someone to run it! I've sat in the drive through for 20 minutes at a time and on more than one occasion, sent my deposit into the bank, sat and waited, then had to go inside because no one helped me in the drive through. Their excuse was that they didn't hear the bell?! Seriously? That is not acceptable. Close the drive through if you cannot efficiently staff it. Last time, ten minutes in someone told me they would be with me in a minute and after 25 minutes I finally decided to go inside because evidently they had forgotten I had already sent over checks? I have tried to be patient because we have been their customer for so long and I've had high hopes that things will improve. This bank used to have amazing customer service. They would generally greet you by name as soon as you walked in the door. Hardly the service they provide now. Currently looking for a new bank to transfer our accounts to. read more

so far am waiting for over an hour for the manager to call be back. i just found out that they are taking 5.00 each month because i don't use this account. at least the clerk i talked to admitted they do this so the credit union gets your money instead of them having to turn an inactive account over to the government (like the law requires). according to what i was told i believe this is a criminal matter and will file a complaint with the local DA's office to see if anything can be done about this. i'll update my review if i ever get a call back from the manager. after more than 2 hours wait i called them back and talked to the manager Ashley, she politely told me tough crap - if you don't use the account they will continue to take your money. i'll be filing complaints with any banking regulators that i can find and i would not recommend that anyone use such a dis-honest business. when i opened this account a few years ago i was told there were no fees for having an account and that is the only reason i even opened the account, knowing that it would get very little use. i'm now told they mailed me something in 2015 to tell me they were going to be taking my money. I am leaving this bank because of their bait and switch behavior. When I opened the account, I was not given much information other than a vague pamphlet. Everything else was done online and I wasn't able to fully see disclosure as you are expected to sign everything quickly. I did not have any problems at first UNTIL I went to use their online banking and use the Bill Pay system to set up payment on my utility bills. I expected the money to be pulled and the bills to be paid but that did NOT happen. Out of the 3 bills only 1 was paid. The reason for this was that there were different current balances shown between the online banking screen on my laptop, their phone app and what they see in house. When KFCU gives you a print out it DOES NOT coincide with what you can print out on your computer. This greatly concerned me. Due to their strange practices, I had an over spending error of $80 which is why the Bill Pay slapped me with $90 in fees. I angrily went into the bank to solve the issue. The bank manager gave me a "courtesy refund" (with slight attitude) and told me that the situation was over and all would be just fine. I told them I received direct deposits into my account because I am disabled. A family member was sending me money for food and it would clear the next day and be available. I told them I cannot have the bank touch it as I needed that food money to feed myself and my child. The deposit went through but then immediately HALF of it was taken as more fees! I've been hit with $170 in fees taken out of my account so far due to the bank not being cohesive with their information. This is like a scam for sure. When I saw the new fees I went into the bank the 2nd time and demanded it to stop. I demanded to speak to the bank manager. I was told she was unavailable but you could clearly see she was just loudly chit chatting away with someone. I felt put off and was told I could speak to the head supervisor. When I spoke to her I fully explained the situation yet again and was told rudely that if their banking style gave me such a headache and anxiety then I should just stick to be mailed checks from family members, go to a check cashing place and get them turned into money orders and hand deliver my money orders to the utility companies. I was fuming angry after that and told her I was leaving the bank in the next month because no one should be talked to like that. I've not had any such problems with another credit union I had been with. The Supervisor should be no less than disciplined for her behavior but in my anger I would want her fired. read more
