New owners...crazy new price of $11.00 for a LUNCH pizza buffet w/salad! This is Watsonville folks...you are now just overpriced compared to Mt. Mikes & Roundtable lunch time pizza buffet. There were only 3 customers at peak lunch time (1:00 o'clockish)...WOW, business is slow and MIRA the reason why: ! dried out, cardboard crust, cold pizza in the warmer. ! Today their soda machine was broken so you were given a choice of ONE bottled soda. ! The two young guys on duty while friendly were in the back talking and hanging out while the front end was getting flooded by that broken soda machine. ! Salad bar at 1:10 pm appeared to not been been hardly touched yet I got soggy tomatoes, wilted lettuce, a dry film on the salad dressings, and bits of this and that in the other salad condiments! ewww My conclusion: I think these recent "rave" reviews are from family or friends "paid off" (ie free meals). read more

First off, came to a party where there is no space for about 200 people plus kids. Can you say fire hazard?! Only two exits! How did this place even pass code?! Lack of employees, pizza was ok, ONE soda machine (they need more) and what is this, a sports bar with 20 TVs?! The place needs a major overhaul, needs more room and a bigger game room. Didn't realize until I mentioned it to a friend that there's a little gem in Watsonville (of all places) that has a million tvs AND was showing the fight!!!!! So we got a cauliflower crust pizza from here the other day and was amazed at how delicious it was! I was here on a Saturday several hours before the ufc fight was on. The place was already packed at 1pm. On top of the fight tonight i they seemed to have several birthday parties going on. I worked at a pizza place and i know how it can get in times like this. I want to give the crew that day a big thumbs up and let everyone know how well they did. They did not stress at all l, they were all polite to all customers and calm. The manager was also very calm and multitasked the best he could. Reading what the other reviewers are saying: 1) People who leave one star reviews for a crumb on the floor = LAME. I saw one gave a 1 star for the bathroom. The entire business, being completely graded on something that has a continuous flow of people using it to do things that are of a personal matter. BTW, they ARE serving pizza and drinks here - so I would argue the bathroom is used more frequently than a paint store? Of course, there will be times it will not be completely clean, people eat large amounts of food and drink large amounts of drink and they need to put it somewhere when it goes through them. Of course. And of course, Straw Hat will need to meet health standards, and of course staff is short and/or busy and can't get on their hands and knees to wipe the floor before Princess walks on it - with the handkerchief they pull out of their bathroom cleaning tuxedo and end it with a bow "Good evening fair lady!". This is a pizza place who hosts UFC fights. The bathroom is perfectly fine. It is generally clean. Also, who is messing up the bathroom? The restaurant? Or the nasty people who can't take the .2 seconds to flush the toilet, or take aim and fire correctly? Mom wouldn't be proud. Here's why you 1-star reviewers are intellectually dishonest: If a dirty bathroom is 1 star, but the food if 4 star and the service is 3 star - then your review should be 3 star. Giving a 1-star for getting your feelings hurt over an expired coupon or the being sensitive to a business asking for referrals - without a single word about the actual food or the demeanor of the employees who helped you - that's just being entitled, and again, intellectually dishonest. You are effectively driving the overall average of a business based on your own emotions, and not on the actual service, food or overall experience. I see a 2 star based upon how long they had to wait - not a 1 star. At least this is more intellectually honest than these 1 star reviews. #rantover So, back to my actual review... Food is excellent, the ambiance is that to be expected of a pizzeria. Wholly disappointed with my delivery from Straw Hat this evening. Ordered mozzarella sticks, a salad, & medium pan pizza. The mozzarella sticks were bland, tasted freezer burnt, & all the cheese had already burst out of each one. They were served with a cup of ranch instead of marinara? I was excited for the salad because of the bar. For $7 I got brown iceberg lettuce, pink tomato slices, shredded carrots, some cucumbers & baby corn. Last but not least, the pizza. Biting into the pizza was a mush fest! It seemed like the dough was still raw on the inside. Upon further investigation, we realized they took 2 crusts, stuck them on top of each other & called it a pan pizza. After about 20 minutes of sitting, the cheese had turned to an unappealing translucent quality. For those 3 items, our bill was $50. I am giving 2 stars because they deliver to Aptos, & the last salad I had to go was really good. read more

I came here for lunch today for the lunch buffet at 11 but they didn't start it till someone comes. I told the lady at the from desk i only had half an hour and she said she would try her best to start it quick and she did, very friends and fast. We purchased a few groupons some time ago for this particular Straw Hat, and we've regretted it ever since. It started with the first pizza we ordered which was just a regular pepperoni pizza. There was maybe one pepperoni slice per slice of pizza. The crust was also bland, flat and tasted like cardboard. Since then we have ordered the hot hat sandwiches, which were okay except for the roast beef one which was extremely salty and tasted expired. Also, the fried potato wedges and french fries tasted like they were fried in oil that should have been changed a month ago. Finally, we used up our last groupon tonight (thankfully!). We ordered a deep dish vegetarian pizza. The crust was NOT deep dish, but the regular flat, bland, cardboard tasting crust. Also, the sparse assortment of vegetables did not include artichoke hearts as was described on the menu. It seemed like they used about a tablespoon of sauce spread very thinly over the pizza. Overall, this was by far the worst pizza I have ever purchased from a pizza place. Even worse than the Costco pizzas or bake-at-home pizza places. I will never purchase another item from this or any other Straw Hat pizza place again. read more

This isn't award winning pizza. It's not Neopolitan-style with goat cheese and artichoke hearts, or homemade mozzarella, or anything like that. What it is is affordable, decent pizza in a friendly atmosphere, with kind staff. That, itself, is worth plenty to me. I went to Straw Hat specifically because they had a salad bar, which I enjoy at lunch. While the options were limited, all the produce was fresh. They had lettuces, a few mixed veggies, four dressings, two pasta salads, jello (does anyone, anywhere, with a full set of teeth eat jello?), chickpeas, and shredded cheese. Everything looked clean and like people hadn't stuck their fingers in the food, which is nice. They had pizza out on the buffet but there were only a few pieces, and a scattering of potato wedges. However, I was there at 11:30, so I think the employee was waiting for more people to arrive to make fresh pizza, which made sense to me. I ordered the lunch special of salad bar, breadsticks, and a soda for around $8.00. I was taken aback by the breadsticks: they were delivered fresh from the oven, and a huge portion of garlicky, cheesy, crispy bread twists. They were amazing, and enough for three people if they weren't so good I wanted to keep them to myself. For the price, I got a great amount of reasonable quality food. The place itself was silent, but I'd assume it starts jumping later in the day and on weekends. They had TVs strewn across the ceiling, with news, sports, and Sponge Bob playing. There's also an arcade for kids to pester their parents about, if you're looking for other entertainment. I have to say, the women's restroom was out of soap, and the men's reeked of urine, so that was unpleasant. The rest of the restaurant, however, seemed clean. The front counter employee was friendly, attentive to needs, made fresh pizzas for every customer who walked in the door, and seemed genuinely happy to be helping us. I appreciated his smile. For value, and as a place to take the family or a bunch of kids, I'd definitely recommend this place. read more
