We parked next door at the gas station and walked to the park. There was no parking fee or entrance fee. We made it there about 9 and there were about 5 vendors and many tables to sit and enjoy your food. There was also music playing. Slutty vegan seemed to be the only vendor with a line. When I'm talking line, I'm talking L-I-N-E!!!! As we were waiting, we ended up getting a spiked lemonade from one of the vendors and it wasn't spiked much. Lol After standing in line for 2 hours we're getting closer to the front, and then we hear "We're sold out."

Atlanta is better off for having food trucks (and this park, specifically). Despite the cloudy, on-and-off drizzly weather, the park had a good turnout of patrons between 7-9pm on a Thursday night. Thanks to those who braved the elements for our UYE (http://www.yelp.com/events/atlanta-atlanta-food-truck-park-uye). The food truck/food stand lineup was pretty good: Sweet Auburn BBQ Corn-a-Cue One Love Jerk Grill Metro City Dogs Lemonade Stand WOW! Food Truck Ibiza Bites Chay J's New Orleans Candies Rouxd Food Truck King of Pops Yum Yum Cupcake Verizon also had a stand. I've been following the park's official calendar (http://www.atlantafoodtruckpark.com/calendar/) over the past month and noticed Thursday nights are the ideal weeknight (excluding Fridays) to go for the most trucks and the best selection. I suspect there might have been more trucks last night if it wasn't for the weather. I ended up trying a little bit of everything: Arepas (Venezuelan sliders) from WOW! Food Truck Beef brisket with Asian pear slaw taco from Sweet Auburn BBQ Goat cheese-stuffed fried green tomatoes from Ibiza Bites Creole pretzels and Creole popcorn from Chay J's I'll be posting reviews for each of those trucks in the next few days. If you come for dinner, I recommend coming on the early side as the food trucks only have a limited supply of items and do sell out. This leads some trucks to close early. I saw many menus with marked off items that had sold out for the day. Yum Yum Cupcakes shut down early because they sold out of their cupcakes for the day. I was pleasantly surprised to see how much seating the park had. I counted 16 large picnic tables in the main "dining" area, most with umbrellas. Each picnic table can seat up to about 8 people each. The picnic tables are located on a flat, paved surface. The food trucks are located in a large gravel lot. This lot has 4 communal standing tables and 2 additional picnic tables. So overall, this spot has quite a bit of seating, which is convenient. Also, plenty of trash cans and recycling bins to keep the grounds looking relatively clean. The park is family and dog-friendly. It can be a little loud because you're around all these big trucks and next to busy Howell Mill Rd. You can BYOB, so save money by bringing your own drinks. If you want water, I saw some trucks selling it for $1 per bottle. There is one restroom and it's a "Johnny on the Spot" porta-potty in the parking lot with portable sink outside so you can wash your hands. There is ample free parking behind the park. Turn onto Emery St, next to the Shell Station on Howell Mill, to find it. If you need more detailed directions, check out the park's FAQ here: http://www.atlantafoodtruckpark.com/faqs/. The parking lot is old and filled with pot holes, so drive carefully. I saw someone puncture their car's tire by running over a broken-off metal sign post on the ground (she was trying to make too tight of a turn around the dining area). Note that every Wednesday and Friday night throughout the summer, the park will be playing movies for free. Also, from time to time, there is live music. On the weekends, there's a food market with rotating vendors and an artists market coming soon. Overall, I'm very happy with the Atlanta Food Truck Park and definitely plan on returning.

I didn't know or think that Cook Out was in Atlanta until we were driving past a place and they didn't have parking so my friend suggested Cook Out. I was so excited. When we walked in it was a bit overwhelming because of the many varieties and options they have. When we walked up to the counter the lady greeted us and gave us the run down of how to order. The inside looked like the average fast food place. Only thing I could say was the floors were very slippery. I ordered the tray with a Cheeseburger with onions and mayo, Cajun fries, white cheddar bites, chicken nuggets and a drink. The Cheeseburger was very good and made how I asked, The fries were good with the seasoning on it. The White Cheddar Bites were my favorite and I could have gotten 7 more of those. The Chicken nuggets werent my favorite at all. Overal I am a huge fan of Cook Out now. The pricing blew me away as it was so affordable. I will be going back to Cook Out when I go to another southern state as I have to have my White cheddar Bites again.

Most times there's one or two things to choose and they're usually sandwiches. It feels kind of like a Top Chef competition. The chefs prepare something special for the day that's not on their normal menu. One week Empire State South was set-up and I had one of the best fried pork sandwiches, ever. In hindsight I don't think I've had such a thing since I was in high school, so that isn't a very fair comparison. Today the chef from The Hungry Peach was there. I opted for the barbecue pork sandwich combo, which came with some sort of mini peach dessert and a big cup of lemon tea (or something like it) for only $7. They also had pimento cheese sandwiches served on toasted bread with lettuce and tomato. Either would be the perfect thing for a hot Atlanta afternoon.

It was even billed a "Food Truck Festival." These events were made for the likes of me. Obviously, my disappointment is captured in the two star rating, but I'll take a moment to explain how word choice builds hype and influences perception and thusly, the ensuing letdown. ::: Poor word choice number 1: "swap meet." ::: I don't know what "swap meet" means 'round these parts, but this here Yankee has always known "swap meet" to mean a bazaar like atmosphere where you score cheap, unique and potentially secondhand goods so you can then lie when asked "oh, where'd you get this amazing __________ from? Is it designer?" Not the case at the "Southern Swap Meet." Apparently, "Southern" means "rich, bitch." $275 jeans? Really? Nearly everything was geared towards men, ranging from tees, jeans to bow ties, boat shoes [for both the ironic and sincere wearer]. It's a pop up shop: expensive, quality goods thrown in a barn so you can feel all hip and gritty about it. Yay you. I get that the allure of alliteration was too much to resist, but the name of this event was misleading. ::: Poor word choice number 2: "festival" ::: The word "festival" inherently implies numerous participants. The Atlanta Street Food Coalition participation was abysmal. There were three food trucks: Good Food Truck, Tamale Queen, and Westside Creamery. King of Pops was doing his thing, as per usual. Yay for that, because I resorted to having a lemon and ricotta popsicle for lunch. There was also a guy slinging boiled peanuts that I hear are very tasty. That's cool and all, but c'mon: ongoing events like Street Food Thursdays and First Fridays at Sweet Auburn Curb Market see way more action than a "festival" purported to be raising money for the cause. Aside from the nomenclature related shortcomings, the event didn't appear very well organized. There was confusion as to when the event started: I saw three different start times listed on websites and materials [2 pm, 4 pm, 5pm]. I was there from 3:30 to 4:30 and never felt like it "started." Despite posted signage attempting to tell you where things were located, it was very easy to wander into someone's bedroom. I know it's the first event and there's bound to be kinks and things don't always run smoothly. I get that. But even taking that into consideration, nah, yo. And hipster hell to boot? I can't.

When the party poopers left the fire dancers came out to play. A giant fire ejaculating circus contraction from the art of such and such was being toyed with. Adron finally showed and we watch the boys from Rapture act a fool. I had my first poodle here and when I went for another they were out! Shortly after all the food trucks ran out of food. BBAHAH WHHHHHHYYYYY the agony of waiting in line and then it being gone. The organizers didn't expect this kind of showing, fyi. I don't know what happened with your quality, but it was not worth it for 1/4 the price. On top of that Uber Eats said I needed to share the complaint within two days to get a refund. Consequently I will not get UBER One and UBER EATS validated my decision to get a Dash Pass instead. I wasn't trying to game the system for a refund but after years of great steak sandwiches from Woody's for well over a decade, I thought about it simmering. Woody's UBER Eats cost you a long time customer who used to laud your authenticity and because of one poor performance won't be back.

WTF is a food stand within The Works that really stands out. Featuring a variety of potato picks such as tots, waffle fries, curly fries, etc., the carbs are on 10 here. Beyond the potatoes themselves, WTF offers a variety of seasonings and toppings to flavor up your choice. Craving more tan just fries? They've got you covered there as well with tenders, fries and more. I decided to go with the straight fries w/ cajun seasoning ++ tots w/garlic parmesan and lemon pepper. Both were freshly fried and flavored, I only wish I had taken a seat to eat more on my own before I passed them onto him, lol. And the gentleman behind the counter was ON IT. He was tossing fries in seasoning, drizzling sauce on wings, all while making jokes and helping customers at the same time. Truly a good experience, I'll be back to enjoy more potatoes in all their glory.

Food stands served a variety of foods including cake pops, flavored boiled peanuts, tamales, chinese potstickers/buns, bottled drinks, and king of pops. There's definitely potential for more businesses to partake in the event. As food truck/street food culture becomes more popular, I'm sure the number of vendors at the Saturday Urban Picnic will increase, probably to the point that it would outgrow the location of where it's at right now. I also felt as though the quality of the food could be better. The ideas are clever, but the food doesn't compare to food from LA's food truck's. We arrived today just after 11, and the line for Yumbii was reasonable and there were almost no lines at the other food trucks. Last week, we arrived after 11:30 and the lines were miserably long - at least 30-40 minutes for Sweet Auburn BBQ just to place an order, and then maybe another 10-15 minutes for the food. Honestly, the food wasn't worth the wait. I guess there's this expectation that street food is supposed to be unique - something I can't find at the everyday restaurant. And isn't street food supposed to be cheap - like average $5. But I still made the decision to try Sweet Auburn BBQ b/c I was so drawn to the smell of smoking meat. And maybe psychologically I was drawn b/c it had the 2nd longest line so maybe the food is really good. I got the $8 plate which included choice of meat, side, and Texas Toast - I decided on the beef brisket (ok) and the jicama & Asian pear slaw (good). Texas Toast was more like Texas bread - thick but not toasted, and plain w/ no garlic butter :( I tried my friend's salad w/ BBQ chicken - pretty good but nothing special either. If you're looking for a more authentic street food experience, your time might be better spent waiting in line for the other food trucks. So today, I finally had my first Yumbii - and it will not be my last :) My favorite was the sesame fries esp. the chipotle ketchup. The fries are dusted w/ salt & chili flakes, and you can taste a hint of the sesame oil - it really works! Fries are $3 and the portion is enough for 2 ppl. Yumbii tacos are $2 and $3. I had 2 tacos which was plenty - they are deceivingly filling! I enjoyed the fish taco ($3) which was surprisingly 1 big piece of fish (vs. the usual 2-3 tiny pieces you get at other places). I wasn't a fan of the spicy pulled pork taco ($2) - it was spicier than expected and dripping with oil :( And like week #1, we got a King of Pops to enjoy on our walk back to work. I tried the Mojito this time which was nice & refreshing - my only complaint is that all the herbs sank to the bottom of the popsicle which probably can't be helped. Friday Urban Picnics is run by the Atlanta Street Food Coalition, and held every last Friday of the month from March to October, 11-2pm. Location is the back of Sweet Auburn Curb Market. At today's picnic, I arrived around 11:45 and lucked out with finding a parking spot. Lines were very short too - but that all changed after 12. Good Food Truck and Yumbii were probably the most popular. Westside Creamery, The Pop Shop (or maybe it was The Pop Stop), and Black Tie BBQ were there, too. I think almost all items were under $10. Today I had Good Food's $5 Poodle which was to die for: French Toast hot dog bun, beef dog, apple maple slaw, ... and then they strongly encourage you to add maple syrup and spicy mustard. Whoa that was really yummy - messy to eat though and I had sticky fingers afterwards from the maple syrup but no complaints from me :) Next time I'm trying one of their savory cones filled w/ all kinds of goodies! The Indian rice crispy treat sounded intriguing, too (curry, coconut, and candied fennel seeds)! For dessert I had a $3 generous scoop of Westside Creamery's bourbon & bacon ice cream. Just a hint of bourbon flavor and surprisingly thick pieces of bacon throughout - honestly I was expecting bacon-infused flavor but my bad for expecting anything else but the real thing!! They had some great flavors to choose but I went with bourbon & bacon since the Westside guy said it was his favorite. I've already marked my calendar to make a field trip to the next several picnics b/c there are too many new things to try! Some tips: Bring cash. If you're lucky enough to find parking in the Sweet Auburn parking lot, it's free w/ validation - look for the table outside that validates tickets. Otherwise make a purchase inside to get parking validation. When I was driving back to work, I also found free parking available under the interstate - free for the first 90 minutes.

City councilman Kwanza Hall showed up sportin' a Fixie bicycle which is a local bike shop by husband and wife team Mikel and Pinky. Parking was easy and free on the street or you could park in the Sweet Auburn lot but it looked packed. If you couldn't come this time next time bring a hungry belly and an adventure to try new delights. I'll definitely be supporting local food again at Urban Picnic.
