I visited this salon because a friend referred me. At first I was a bit skeptical because my hair is natural (meaning no perm to keep it straight) and salons usually charge way too much money to straighten it. There is actually two parts to this salon, in the front there are men who cut hair and women who do locks and amazing weave jobs. The part that I visited was in the back, which is the area where you go to get a Dominican Blowout. Once you enter (the back part) you let the lady know that you want a wash. Now this was very different to me because in Atl you have to sign a sheet and you choose your stylist. Although there was no sheet, there was also no confusion. The women actually remembered which order you came in. There are about 3-4 women who work there. Three of the women just wash and roll, the other woman is the only one (from what I saw) that does the actual blowout. I figured the woman who was washing my hair would look at me crazy because once again my hair is natural and often people think it is hard to maintain. But the lady didn't look at me strange, she just washed my hair and gave a great scratch/scrub job. She then combed my hair out fully and sent me to the lady that would be doing the rolling. The lady that rolled my hair did it in about 10 mins, which was great. And she made sure my hair was rolled tight. Natural haired women need their hair rolled tight if they want to loosen the natural curl pattern for the straightening process. After my hair was rolled I went under the hair dryer. In about a hour my hair was dry, I waited about 10 mins before it was my turn to get my hair blown out. Once I got in the chair the lady tried to ask me how I wanted my hair. The reason I say tried is because they don't speak much english. I was just like whatever (because I'd seen the women's hair that left out, I knew it would be cute). I like how the stylist didn't go over my hair multiple times. She blowed through it once and it was completely straight. My favorite part about this experience, is they only charged me $35 as my friend quoted. I thought they made a mistake, usually when I get it done in Atl its between $60-$70. Another plus is the whole process took only about two hrs. They did reccommend a deep conditioner ($5) the next time I visit. I took that statement with a grain of salt because I deep condition my hair on a regular and more importantly that would add to the overall time spent there (I have no patience). I would definitely reccommend this salon (the Dominican area) to any and everybody, especially the naturl haired women. After about three weeks of having/maintaining my hair straight, I was ready to go back to the curly look. When I washed my hair it back to its natural state and I didn't have any heat damage. Finding this place has been a life, hair, and definitely a money saver. Now when I want/need my hair straightened, I'm not going all the way back to Atl to get it done. read more

I probably should not have been surprised when I took my hair pins out and sat back in the shampoo chair the lady standing over me took a huge deep breath, accompanied with a sigh..... I'm natural with a lot of hair. Then as she fingers threw my hair she started speaking Spanish to another lady... they laughed. She scratched and whipped my hair as if its a real Brillo! A different lady (older woman) rolled me hair in the rollers. She had no idea how to detangle natural hair. I asked if she had a wide tooth comb or something bigger besides the little rat tail comb she used...she didn't. So if I ever go back I'll bring my "Knot Today" tangle tweezers, and wide tooth comb. I did bring my own shampoo, conditioners and deep conditioners. As I was under the dryer with the deep conditioners in I thought to myself.. damn it no Knot Today. The actually blow out was ok... but because the older lady didn't do a good job at detangling, when they took the rollers out my hair was so frizzy. After blowing it out she still had to go back and curl my hair. For $45 I'd go back again just because it takes me entirely too long to blow my own out, but next time I'm willing to detangle my own hair. read more

DO NOT go to Jerome. This man butchered my entire cut. I sent this man a SPECEFIC pic of how I wanted my haircut. I'm not even going to embarrass myself or him by posting the before and after. He pushed my hairline so far back and cut my entire hair off. He didn't even wipe my head with alcohol, and kept talking to himself during the cut. My hairline literally is slanted. One of the worst cuts I've ever received in my life, and I'm not even the one to leave barbers bad reviews, but I'm writing this to save anybody else out there, because now I have to wait almost a month for my hair to grow back. I was shocked that I had such a bad experience with Keith. My haircut is uneven, not blended , and he took way too much hair off. I also ended up with a bald fade that I did not ask for. My undercut cost $25 , and I could have done it myself for the way it lookS. I told him to keep it feminine , and I look like a plucked chicken. I was embarrassed when I left the shop, and I am embarrassed to go to work. I have interview coming up , and I don't know what to do, but cry. read more

I just moved to PG county from the NY Metro area, so I decided to use yelp to help me in my search to get settled! With very little connections or friends in the area I am on a search to find the best saloons, restaurants, hang outs, churches, Gyms etc that will not put a dent in my pocket! Yes I too, went to Klutz after reading the postings on Yelp! There is no Giant supermarket as I read in a post, next door! However, there is a Family Dollar and a Dominoes Pizza across the street, and a Dunkin Doughnuts/Halal Meat Spot directly next to it! It's not too far away from the Hotel Marriott - University of Maryland! So do walk with your cash! My hair is 100 % Kinky Curly, meaning I can go Afro without weeks of no gel or softener detangling products!! Id put Don King to shame! Ok so, I brought my own Kinky Curly conditioner just in case this saloon couldn't handle my nappy! Well to my amazement I didn't need the nappy unlocker! They didn't use my shampoo, but I did realize their hair product was Nexus high quality so I was ok with it! But they did use the detangler. I got there at 9:30 am Saturday morning and they had no lines! The telephone guy told me they opened at that time and I decided not to risk a later show up time since it was my first time!! But I'll be Darn, this is the spot if you don't want to spend all your morning waiting for hours just to look cute! I was in the chair washing at 9:36 am, under the dryer by 10 am and blow out at 10:30 am. Yep! And the place was small , yes do go alll the way to the back! They have only 2 washing sinks and about 5 dryers and 3 blow out chairs. The ladies were real friendly, very professional and since I spoke a lil Spanish all went as planned. It helps if you can say the words "straight" "curly" and "style"! They do massage your scalp, so if you have any dandruff left, I will be highly surprised! I'm happy with the results of my hair, they did get it bone straight. I was under the dryer for approx. 30 min. Since my hair is not that thick it didn't take much to blow it out. Cost me a lot more than my Dominican spot in NJ -$20 bucs for blow out, but since this is a new area I was ok with the $40 they charged. I gave her a tip and was on my way! read more

After moving i have been trying my hardest to find a decent barber for my son. After trying different places I finally found one. It's always been a constant battle between what my son and I like and to finally find one that we can agree on that is awesome. After having no luck I took to yelp and found street kutz. Not knowing who to go to a gentleman standing outside introduced me and my son to Dre... Skeptical as any would be I said to him" your not going to mess my sons hair up are you"? He said that's impossible,... needless to say Dre the barber you are the and my son and I have finally come To an agreement.... he is very welcoming and detailed. We will be back. In my opinion, they do the best blow outs, however, I won't be going there again (much to my dismay). I have been to my fair share of dominican salons and I LOVE the way my hair would l would leave. I went to them Natural, Texturized, and relaxed. My hair was ALWAYS gorgeous. I stopped going because the chick that would the actual blow outs had crazy attitude. She would jerk my hear around like a little kid and it seemed like she would purposely fry my head with the dryer. They are cool. I had been going to Judith's in Adams Morgan but always had noticeable heat damage and breakage. At Judiths, some of the stylists have attitudes and talk junk about you (mostly "frustration" with the natural hair) in Spanish. However, I have always encountered this at Dominican salons, EXCEPT for Street Kutz. They are pretty professional, and overall they seem very nice and polite, even though there is a language barrier. Sure, they are halfway watching telenovelas the whole time they're doing your hair, but it's a cultural experience. But anyway.... I like Street Kutz (the ladies who I am assuming are Dominican, in the back) for a Dominican-style blow-out of my natural hair. It can be a little inconsistent style-wise, depending on who you have. But, they definitely get your roots straight...though there might be parts of your scalp that are a lil raw afterwards (pretty normal for this hair treatment). They ONLY TAKE CASH and for whatever reason, there seems to be no POS terminals where you can get cash back around (*Update: there is a Giant on the way there, that is one-two miles away that I got cash back from, no fee*). I go to Salon Revive more often, but my stylist tends to be booked 10 days in advance, so I do Street Kutz in emergencies since my hair can't take a Dominican Blowout too often. They recently (maybe it's just the stylist who has done my hair the past couple of times) started using a more gentle method of only blowing straight the front roots and the rest being a normal fuzzy-ish roller set. While I appreciate the hair health benefits, it also gives me the confidence that I could achieve similar results with my LCL hood dryer at home.) They charge $45, which includes deep conditioner. They also do relaxers, etc, which look decent. read more

My man Keith a real NY brother hooks me up with a fresh cut. What I like most is his availability and general nature. Soft-spoken, and is nice with the clippers/razor. Now, I'm not a young bul. So, I don't know if he can do all the modern barber tricks. But, he takes care of me proper. They have a full salon, and several jovial barbers to choose from. In-N-Out. read more

A non-descript shop that has both barbers and hair stylists. The place was pretty bare, with not much effort given to its design or aesthetic. The folks that work here appear nice enough. I went to see Kenya and she worked magic on my tangled natural hair. Great perk of this spot is that it's open on Sunday. With a little TLC, it could look so much more chic. read more

I am also natural and when I left the salon I had straight, full and bouncy hair - love it :) In addition, the hair products that they use smell amazing. I stick with what I know. I know the stylists here. I know them by name and they know me. I've tried other places that make me feel like I am in a factory with little conversation. I can get in and out quickly and not spend a lot of money. I also get my eyebrows done. Btw the key to going to Dominicans is NOT to get your hair blown out. "Watch Your Step" was the first thing I was told when I entered the shop to keep from falling. Little did i know this was an Omen to what would happen to me. The Shop was busy which is normal for most Shops on a Saturday morning. One barber took me to the other side of the shop, and directed me to the chair of a Latin female, I looked to the brother and expressed that I was not happy, but he assured me " man trust men she got you, I would not send you to her". In the past I've not had a positive outcomes with female barbers. And this was no different, the bald head cut was good, and coloring of my beard was OK, the problem starts with the very poor lining and shaping of my beard. The right side was taken down too Damn low and squared off. The left side was not shaped correctly with the side burn cut to a sharp point which I hate. Please note, normally i would chalk this up to poor skills by the a "So call professional" and not return to the business, but I'm a brother with limited income($50.00 was a lot for me) want a fresh professional cut for a job fair on Monday. This experience to say the less was not good and I would not return. read more

Do not go here if your hair is natural. They do not know how to do natural hair. They don't detangle well, burn your hair bad and it ends up in no style what so ever. Then have the nerve to ask me why don't I get a perm. Will never go back here again read more

They are very rude (2 of the 3 workers). I used to go there pretty regularly, and would ingore what they said in Spanish because they figured I didn't understand. I even put up with my scalp being occasionally burnt. But when the young girl TORE out my hair in the back , I said enough is enough. I'll never be back. There are cleaner, more polite Dominican places where they don't cuss you out under their breath in Spanish and they don't rip out your hair. read more

They're fine. I'm from NY so I guess I have high expectations for a cheaper price. I called ahead of time and was told that it would be $50 for a wash/set/blowdry so there were no surprises when I got there. I have a lot of natural hair and was expecting a lot of rude remarks but the lady just said "Ay-yi-yi" and started washing out the conditioner (I had washed my hair and deep conditioned it prior to coming in). The detangling process wasn't fun but at least she put a lot of conditioner in before trying to detangle. I also brought my Knot Today as a leave in to help her out a little more. I believe that there's only woman that does the blow out and it wasn't the best blowout I've received but it was alright. She did wrap my hair and have me sit under the dryer for 5 minutes which is something I do when I take on the arduous task of straightening my hair myelf. Bottom line, the blow out wasn't as sleek as I expected and I'll probably have to wash it out in a couple of days since I'm sure it'll start to revert. I wanted to keep the blowout for at least 2 weeks since I spent $50 on it but c'est la vie. I'd go back if i planned on straightening my hair again (I'm not) and if I was too lazy to do it myself (I am). read more
