11/30/17 I received my first haircut from, A Cut Above. The barbershop was clean, the barbers were friendly, and someone immediately greeted me at the door when I walked in. I went at 6pm and they had no issues taking me as a walk ins. My barber was Butta Brown, who I definitely recommend. He seemed knowledgeable about cutting hair and he was very respectful as well. He provided me with my first real consultation for my haircut. It was detailed and he made sure we discussed what kind of cut I was looking to have. I was not absolutely sure what I wanted to do with my hair and he was more than happy to help me figure out what would work best for me. I have to admit the cut did take longer than I am used to, but it was a great cut that I was more than happy with. Also Butta Brown had great energy and seemed to be a very positive person in general. I would definitely go back. Dude even had some good stories for me, which I appreciated during my cut. My main barber was out of town so I found myself frantically looking for a replacement. I called Thursday after reading reviews on yelp and google and was confident that someone would be able to give me a good if not great cut. Chad was that guy...or so I thought. I made a 9 am appointment asked for the price and explained that my sons football game was t 10 am and that I had to leave at 10 to make it to Silver spring and not miss much. Fast forward to Saturday. I arrived at 8:55 and asked for Chad. They said he wasn't there to take a seat and he would be here soon. 9:15 no Show, 9:30 no show, 9:45 now show, and finally at 9:55 he strolls in and doesn't come and get me from the waiting area. He put on his smock and stood around like he didn't show up almost an hour late. I walked up and said I'm your 9:00 appointment. He mumbles a quaint "my bad!" I show him what I want and he gets me out in 30 minutes. I missed the whole 1st half of my sons game and he was not a happy camper. The only reason I chose to stay is that I had my 20 year Hs reunion in NJ and my Christmas Photoshoot that afternoon. I was stuck between a rock and a hard place and that made me feel very uncomfortable and unappreciated as a new customer. I definitely paid for the reservation, but I wasn't willing to haggle. I was already livid and late. Next time you make an appointment be on time. The haircut was decent maybe a 7.5 out of 10, but time is money and the customer service was definitely lacking. read more

I have been going to this barbershop faithfully for the last 3 months on a biweekly schedule. A good barber can be found but a great barber is hard to find. Look no further than Kevin. Kevin has my father and I looking like new men with these skin fades. I'm old fashioned so I like the fact that he is on time and professional. The ambiance of the shop is peaceful and the flooring stays glossy. I stroll in there like I'm court-side at Staple Center in LA. In the morning I enjoy listening to the radio or watching premium cable! This barbershop also is COVID compliant. read more

For any that have read my reviews over the years, you will come to find that GOOD SERVICE is paramount. There is another hidden agenda that I also harbor: I love supporting American Small Businesses. I proudly bleed red, white, and blue on that topic, folks. A Cut Above was a treasured discovery brought to my attention by a colleague over seven years ago. Part of me can scarcely believe it has been that long (and should also come as high praise for why I gladly return). Kino Lily is the owner and regular staple of his establishment. To his great credit, Kino and an entire team of barbers and women's stylists have cultivated a business in Laurel, MD that draws clients from far and wide. Over the years, the business has grown and moved into a much larger location. I proudly admit that I am VERY conservative with my haircuts. In my line of work, showing up with a Michael Jordan etched into the back of my noggin would...be poorly received. Don't let that fool you, though; Kino's team is eminently talented. If that is what you hanker, I'll bet someone could accommodate. I particularly enjoy that Kino and much of his staff are also well-practiced in the art of straight razors. Prices are quite reasonable and many hair services are on offer. They even have an AppStore app to facilitate scheduling appointments. It is not an understatement to say that A Cut Above is a Community Resource - families bring their children of all ages, young and seasoned professionals cycle through on a regular basis, and some just come to enjoy the collegial and spirited conversations that can only be found at The Barber Shop. My cut with Larry was excellent. I called to see if they could take me and he said my timing was no issue. We discussed my wants and he expressed the expectations for my service. I appreciated how patient and honest he was as this was a large chop on straight natural hair that I inevitably wanted to display as a curly TWA (for those who don't knkw: teeny weenie afro). Been going here since I was a junior in high school and never regretted it since. I've been going to Howard Hancock specifically. He has treated every cut with care and has provided excellent service, even offering services like hot towel and steam treatments, oils, foams and other hair care products so you leave the shop party, dinner, wedding or whatever you're getting groomed for. The same level of quality and service has been extended by the other barbers too when I couldn't get Howard. Overall I highly recommend this shop to anyone. Especially those looking for the first (and probably last) Barber shop. read more

I arrived at A Cut Above at 2:30pm and was in and out quickly. I requested Howard based on the reviews and he did a great job giving me the cut I wanted. He talked to me about haircare and offered solutions to grow healthy hair which was appreciated. He was very fast and I liked not having to wait. The barbershop is extremely clean. Almost pristine. The location is convenient it's located in Laurel right across from the Marlo's Furniture store. The GPS may get tricky for you so look for Marlo's as the central point. Overall I was happy and would consider returning for a fresh cut. read more

I had the WORST experience here. My two year old son needed his first haircut. I called to ask if they cut toddler hair and was told yes. I asked if they do first time hair cuts and was told yes. I told them that my son had extremely curly hair and was biracial and was told that that would be fine. I was told to call a half an hour before coming and to ask for Chaz, who would be prepared to cut a toddler's hair. I called a half an hour before coming and was told that was fine, Chaz would be ready. When my husband and I arrived we asked for Chaz. We spotted two men in the back who began looking at each other and rolling their eyes. We asked for Chaz again though we still had not been greeted. The men began laughing at each other, again without saying anything to us and a man (who was clearly Chaz at this point) rolled his eyes again, loudly said, "Oh man" walked over to us. He did not speak. My husband said, "Are you Chaz?" He replied "Yeah" My husband said, "You don't look like you knew this was happening. You don't look too happy to see us." Chaz walked us back. I showed Chaz the hair cut I wanted and he said that he would instead have to cut my son's hair all over. Then a man came over and said something along the lines of, "You happy what I gave you Chaz?" They were using my toddler as some kind of practical joke. We drove 45 minutes to get there. I was ENRAGED. I went to have a seat. Chaz then picked up a comb to get my toddlers curls out. When my TODDLER began squirming people in the shop were laughing. I called ahead THREE TIMES. It is fine if you don't cut toddler's hair. It is fine if you don't cut biracial hair. Hell, it is fine if you don't like to see black women with white men. Fine. Don't waste my fucking time and embarrass me and my family. This was exceptionally unprofessional. Ridiculous and worst experience I have EVER had in a shop. I cannot express how unacceptable this was. After the constant jeering and Chaz just looking angry that he had to cut my son's hair we left. It took everything I had not to cuss them the FUCK out. I guess that's why I'm cussing so much now. Gross, childish and unprofessional behavior. read more

I wish I had a better experience at this barbershop. I like the fact they we open on Sunday's so I called the barber Kevin to whom I was referred to by a colleague. I called Kevin around 1pm and he told me to come in for 4:30p. I arrived about 5 minutes before and someone was in the chair. I said to myself cool I will wait for him to finish this head. Once he was done the guys head in the chair someone else got in the chair. After, the next another person got in the chair. I thought he may have overbooked and was getting the people out of the way. Even with people starting to leave another barber asked me who I was waiting for to which I said Kevin and the barber pointed to Kevin and said "Kevin" to which I replied "yes". Around 5:30p Kevin begins to pack up as if he's about to leave. Which in fact he was leaving so I said "what's up?!" Kevin replies "Well, you didn't say you was waiting for me and I have to go catch my cab"! I waited an entire hour to get my haircut for Kevin to say he has to go! I will not giving them my business ANYMORE! Customer Service goes a long way-- to bad they do not know about that here. read more

Very friendly people. However, pretty sure I got ripped off. The board said a haircut was $20 but I got charged $26 without the option for a tip. Pretty sure the barber created his own tip. Also, he didn't even take his time and missed spots that I had to have someone fix when I got home. The service he provides is very fast, he sticks to his appointment times, and does a really nice cut on my son. This Barber was the absolute worse experience ever. I paid $20 to a barber who while cutting decided to turn a movie on his iPad. He stood several feet behind me as if he was afraid to get close. Then after the cut he leaves quickly. My main issue was when I called and asked for a good Barber, I was told that they all were good. Needless to say. I called the manager and he claimed that he would make it better but a bad haircut is hard to overcome. He didn't offer me my money back. Totally unsatisfactory and unfortunate considering the excellent environment and cleanliness. Please note that not all of the barbers were bad. I saw three other doing a great job. In fact, my friend was satisfied with a great cut. I think barbers should be honest about whose god or bad. I think barbers should give you their full attention and disregard the tv or other conversation especially when you are not good. Lastly the cut was only a shape up for $20. I asked why so much and the response was because I asked for a razor. I asked for the razor because the cordless clippers used for my shape up did not give a sharp shape up. This is the only barber shop that charges for the razor shape up but used a cordless clipper. A razor is part of the cut not extra. So yes $20 for a shape up. read more
