I needed a change from the traditional barbershop that caters to men half my age. I am bit older now and need more from my stylist visit than sitting on a human assembly line waiting for my name or nonchalant wave calling me for interrupted service, and less than calming environment after a long week at work. It's not bad, I just wanted, No, needed something better. Walking into DC Homme, I realized it would be like no other barbershop experience. Keyword: Experience. The grooming lounge (2 floors) is extraordinary with the historic memorabilia and art hanging on rich, dark brown - mahogany wood walls, you'd expect in a stately law firm. There are grooming samples at the front door, a men's clothing shop, and other services all under one roof (Brian gave me a tour). The mood, music, comfy couch/chairs, and wall mounted flat screen TVs made you feel like you were stepping into a major city salon with all the comforts of home. I was Brian's guest (not customer) and it felt like it. Brian focuses his attention on your grooming, conversation, and nothing else. His approach is methodical without being mechanical. You can tell he thought out every detail of your cut, asks the right questions, and engages you in light, meaningful conversation that helps you connect, which is important between a man and his stylist. Your hair cut looks great, after the highly anticipated flourish to every haircut with an essential oil (can't tell all the details - you have to try it for yourself - it's amazing). You leave feeling like someone took the time to provide you more than a hair cut - DC Homme gives you an experience, which is worth the $35 - $40. Yes, I could go back to paying $27 for a hair cut, but I have more appreciation for finer things in life such as the high degree of professionalism, atmosphere, conversation, and genuine care Brian and his colleagues put into their guest's experience that's definitely worth the $8 - 15 difference (Exceptional Experience Fee). I saw the reviews for White's Barbershop on here and it was close by so I decided to give them a try for my son. We walked in about an hour before they closed and they were kind enough to take us without an appointment. The atmosphere is very laid back and friendly but also professional. Brian (the owner) cut my sons hair and he actually listened to what I wanted. He took his time and gave him a perfect "gentleman" style haircut. He shook our hands when introducing himself and provided excellent service. The prices were fair for the high quality of service. I would definitely recommend them and we will be back. read more

About a month ago I decided that I need a haircut first thing in the morning and I used the illustrious Yelp app to look for local barbers in the area. Part by chance and part dumb luck I came across White's Barber Co. These guys are busy enough that you normally need an appointment to get a haircut, but once again..I got lucky and they happened to have a spot that morning. The haircut was great. And the ambience is the place is pretty cool. There's another chain of barbers around that tries for the same kind of cool vibe. However, this place seemed less fake and way more organic. I won't lie..the haircut was a bit pricier than what I'm used to paying, but I'd say it was worth it. Like I said..great cut..and great experience overall. I'll be back...when I can get an appointment. I'd say it's worth trying these guys at least once. If it's your bag you'll definitely be back. I'll definitely be back! read more

Not worth the cost for the type of cut I get. Maybe if I had more hair or if I was getting a complicated cut it would be worth it but when did hair cuts become so expensive!? I found this barbershop through an app called styleseat. The shop was very easy to find and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. As I walked in, I was greeted by the barbers and owner Brian. Everyone was friendly and very professional. This is a barbershop/salon, so the lady's can get in as well. My barber is Mike and he is very timely and efficient. I have been going to the same stylist for nearly a decade in Gaithersburg, MD. But I recently moved to Columbia and that drive to Gaithersburg once a month is just way to much to deal with. So, I decided its time to find a new place. After some searching, I made the choice and book an appointment online with Peter. Online booking...HUGE PLUS!!! Peter greeted me with an open chair. Asked simply how I usually get it done and then he went to town. He and Brian (owner) made the visit awesome. Including me in all conversation as if I had been coming for years. Clean shop too. Looking for a new shop in the Laurel Area. Gave Peter a call and he was able to get me in the same day. Shop was clean and had a very homey feel. White's Barber Co is great! Pete Leavitt is the man, he's my go-to barber in the state of Maryland. I usually get pretty traditional cuts, and it's clear he knows them all, but I have also seen him cutting a bunch of different styles with the same level of professional craftsmanship. Custom details & changes are no trouble for this guy, and he handles a straight razor very well. The gravy is the cool atmosphere and decor. It works as a place to hang out, and I could see it being something of a hub if you're there enough. Definitely recommended as a quality Main Street barbershop. read more

My son Robert went in today to get a haircut from Brian and to trim his beard and was charged $50.00!! This man did NOT tell my son he was charging him $50.00 until the end. Now I have 2 male sons and a husband AND NEVER EVER have they been charged $50.00. I called Brian to try to understand why he didn't tell my son the price beforehand and he stated that's what he charges. His way of fixing the problem was to offer my son a free shape up the next time he comes (worth $15.00) but there will not be a next time because my husband and my son will no longer be going to this Barber shop because of this incident. I asked Brian to refund my son $15.00 now instead as there won't be a next time since he is not letting people know ahead of time what he charges. HE REFUSED!! He goes on about how long he has been a barber and how much he charges but had he let his client know what he was gonna charge him, my son would have refused service from him. If this is how you conduct business in this Barber shop, you give other black barbers a bad name. You have every right to charge what you feel you are worth but you have to let the client know what that charge is BEFORE you cut their hair. He knew he was wrong but refused to fix it. That is not good customer service period. Brian you need to tell your clients upfront what you are charging them, not after you have cut their hair. You can charge $250 per haircut if you want but let the clients know beforehand so they can choose if they want to pay that or not. PERIOD! read more

Based on perfect reviews I saw on yelp last week, I was excited to finally find a place better than the strip mall barbershop. I went to this place first time and it was closed, my mistake as I did not check business hours ahead, so went home and checked their site, it says walk-in welcome. So I decided to give a try and no bother with appointment. Friday afternoon I walked in to have my son hair cut. I was welcomed by a not-so-nice dude. He was upset for no reason as if he was asking how dare you walk in!! I said walk-in welcome, correct?! He replied if we have availability. The reply was not as friendly as I would like it to be. He started saying I can recommend another place. Note to this business "it is really bad when you tell your customers to go somewhere else". Another stylist - a much nicer dude (sorry do not know names!) walked in and said I can take you in an hour from now. So I said OK, drove home and come back on time. My son and I waited and suddenly the same not-so-friendly dude came by and said I have availability and I can take him. My son (13 yrs) started telling him what he wants. He started cutting and towards the end, I looked at him and did not like the haircut. I told the guy one thing to fix. He was upset and started saying you are saying something and your son is saying something different. Come on, dude, relax! He added it is now 45 minutes I'm working on him and now you want something different. I started to get upset but kept calm. I asked him what should I do now that it is 45 minutes. He fixed my son hair, turned out OK but not as I hoped. $$$ time, he said this time on me but I insisted and paid him more than what he expected. So, one +ve star for the haircut, one +ve star for offering free cut, one -ve star for being rude to the customer, one -ve star for telling me implicitly your next customer is more important than me, and finally one -ve star for the attitude in general. Though it seems all other stylists were nice and friendly, my experience was not. I will not be back. Now, back to the strip mall barbershop until I find a new good place. If haircuts were based on atmosphere and professionalism alone, I would give this place a better rating. I don't normally go out of my way to give a bad review to any place, but it's been bothering me for a couple of days. Maybe Brian isn't a particularly good barber for my type of hair, but holy shit! The one side is clearly shorter than the other (by a loooooong shot man), the back is not faded properly.. He charged me an extra $9 for the beard line up.. LOL.. That's not straight either, or trimmed evenly all over. I mean, you know how you can just tell you aren't getting a good hair cut? He never even touched the top of my hair, the bangs are untouched. What's worse is, he took a while doing it, and the first time he asked me if I liked it, I didn't want to pull it apart because this is clearly this guys profession and his shop, but man, if you can't cut white people's hair that's fine, just don't cost me extra money by having to go somewhere else after you butcher my hair. The back is just basically shaved, and then abruptly goes into whatever it is you call this thing.. It's definitely not a "fade" or close to anything that I've ever paid $25 dollars for. That being said, I would take a haircut in a dirty old frat house or in a dormitory bathroom with less ambience, and for less money, that is properly faded and lined up, rather than be able to watch a flat screen tv and pay close to $40 for a haircut and shave. After all, it's Laurel, Maryland, I went to Georgetown and got a cheaper haircut. read more

This is truly a place for the whole family. My husband gets his hair cut here and I get all my natural hair care needs addressed. I am washed and styled all within an hour and don't end up walking out the door feeling like I have to starve the rest of the week because I have spent a fortune. Jay's prices are right and she is fast. She did not hesitate when I showed her s picture. She listened to my concerns. I am comfortable telling her do whatever and knowing it will be fabulous. This was my 1st time, and the barber shop is really clean, and nice.... but I had a bad experience! The girl in the back does not know how to cut hair! I don't know if she was new or what, but I asked for a simple haircut, and she did it completely wrong. I wished I went to a different barber that was in the shop. Then after I just gave up on the haircut, she was trying to charge me $40 still after she did my haircut wrong. I refuse to pay $40! That what made me even more upset! Don't charge me $40 when you do not know how to cut hair correctly! Especially since it was my 1st time. Beautiful barber shop, but if you chose that girl, may want to think twice again. read more

I went to White's Barber Co. as a result of the positive user reviews here, and I regretted it. For one thing, they don't maintain a professional atmosphere. They keep things casual, like a living room environment - the problem is that while it might be comfortable for them, new customers easily feel out of place. Far, far worse than that, however, is that while each station has a mirror (as you would expect), **nobody uses it**. Instead, it seems their policy to have everyone face *away* from the mirrors. Seriously, I don't know what they're thinking. I can only guess that it's because they're trying to have everyone face the TV. However, what's the point of having mirrors if they don't use them? I'm not there to watch TV, I'm there to get my hair cut. This is an especially egregious mistake when it comes to NEW customers. How the heck are you supposed to know if they're making a mistake, doing something with your hair that you don't want, if you can't see what they're doing? They didn't let me look at a mirror until they were all finished, and I was terrified of what my hair looked like because I was never allowed to see it while they were working! Instead, I faced the people waiting - which was uncomfortable enough. But even worse is that on more than one occasion, I was facing the person in the chair next to me. That was very uncomfortable, NOT professional, and NOT what I want for a barber/salon experience! Of course it didn't help that the mirrors were far away from the chairs with deep insets due to the cabinets they had on either side, and the table in front of the mirror of every single station was crammed full and absolutely messy. As in, disgustingly messy. Even when I was finally *allowed* to look at a mirror, I was too far away to see any detail. When I was done, I discovered that they take credit cards via a smartphone application - as in, there is a small magstripe reader they have mounted to their CELL PHONE. That's great if you're working a flea market or craft fair - but I expect better than that for a brick-and-mortar establishment. What was truly horrendous, however, is that the person taking my card payment asked me what I wanted to charge. What? Apparently, she meant what I wanted to add for a TIP. Are you frigging kidding me? You're going to interrogate me in person for the tip amount? People *choose* whether to leave a tip - they should NEVER be *questioned* about it! My experience at White's Barber Co. was extremely uncomfortable and their atmosphere, styling practices, work surfaces, and business practices were unprofessional. They need to visit an upscale salon and see how it should be done. I am *never* going back. read more

Anthony Hannibal is the most gifted and talented barber on the east coast that works at this location.
