TLDR: totally ignored appointment time and didn't finish work as a result I found this shop to be dishonest and difficult to work with. I called the day before to make an appointment for 11 AM, specifically saying I needed to be out by 2. They confirmed the appointment and guaranteed I would be out by that time. The next day, the manager called to say she wasn't sure we'd be out on time even though she said tires take an hour. She said alignment could also take an hour. So we're talking maximum two hours. I decided to go forward with the 11 AM appointment because I did not need to leave until two, three hours after the appointment started and she was telling me that the amount of work was a maximum of two hours. Alas, they didn't begin working on my car until two hours AFTER the appointment time and then did not finish the work. So after spending three hours waiting, they still did not finish the work. I'll have to go somewhere else to get it finished. Huge waste of time and energy. read more

Brought my car in on the weekend due to brakes squeaking. They didn't seem too eager to help me and for some reason couldn't look at the rear brakes, but told me my front brakes looked like they could be replaced and sent me on my way with an estimate for $2000. I brought my car into my main mechanic today who said I don't even need new brakes, they just needed cleaning. Definitely don't recommend this company if you want to be "stress-free". read more

Poor communication and inconsistent service I visited this shop due to an "Add Coolant" warning on my vehicle. An appointment was confirmed via SMS, and I called the shop to confirm. I was told they could not see the appointment in their system and that they could not assist me. Shortly afterward, I received a call from someone else at the same company who politely asked me to come in and said they would help with adding coolant or provide another solution. I drove approximately 20 minutes and arrived a few minutes before the scheduled time. Upon arrival, the employee I spoke with said he could not help, stated he did not recognize the appointment, and said he was not aware of the call I received. I showed the incoming call from the same company, but the response remained the same. Ultimately, I was not assisted, despite prior confirmation and communication. The experience reflected poor internal communication and resulted in a wasted trip. Based on this experience, I cannot recommend this business. read more

I made a 9 am appointment to have the oil changed. At 9 am, the place wasn't open, so I left and returned an hour later. To change the oil, they then quoted me a figure (over $150!) which was about double what I had been quoted when I made the appointment. They said it was because my car (Mazda) required "special oil." I showed them the email which quoted a price of $79.99. And miraculously, their price came down to around $84. It took 2 hours for them to do the job at which point I was incredibly late. I would say that 1) they are not professional; 2) they will try to overcharge unless you are aware and push back; and 3) take their sweet time to do an otherwise very simple job. The name of their business is a total misnomer: it was literally the most stressful oil change I've ever experienced. read more

I stopped by today, on my way home to Fremont. I had not eaten in many hours, I needed a bathroom and I had kittens and a cat in my car. I had a tire that was quickly losing air. My phone directed me to Stress Free Auto Care and I am so glad it did. The woman at the desk had the smile of an angel and she found the nail in the tire that was causing the loss of air. I rarely leave negative reviews, but my experience with Stress-Free Auto Care in Menlo Park was bad enough that I feel a responsibility to share it. I brought my 2010 Prius in on November 3 because the engine overheated, the car shut off while driving, and the check engine light was on. Their inspection noted that the coolant reservoir was empty and even recommended a cooling-system pressure test to find the leak--but that test was never actually performed. Instead, they diagnosed a bad water pump and thermostat and charged about $1,800 to replace those parts. Before approving the repair, I spoke with a representative named Stephanie. I told her we were hesitant to spend $1,800 on a 2010 Prius and directly asked if it made sense to invest that money or just sell the car. She told me that everything in the car looked "beautiful" and that this was the only issue they saw. When I asked what would happen if we didn't do the repair, she said the engine would blow up. Those comments clearly implied that they had done thorough diagnostics, that the engine itself looked healthy, and that this repair would prevent catastrophic damage. That is the only reason we agreed to spend almost the value of the car on this work. After picking up the car, the warning light came back on almost immediately. We drove it very little, and within about 200 miles the car started shaking badly. When we brought it back on November 14, they told us the engine/head gasket was essentially blown and that replacing the engine would cost around $7,000, more than the car is worth. Only then did they perform tests showing exhaust gas in the coolant--exactly the kind of issue that should be checked before recommending a nearly $2,000 repair on an old, overheating Prius with no coolant. They refused to refund the earlier repair, saying the engine failure was unrelated. Old cars do fail, and I understand that. My issue is that they (1) skipped a key diagnostic test they themselves recommended, (2) did not warn us there was a real possibility the engine was already damaged, and (3) verbally reassured us that everything looked "beautiful" and that this repair would prevent the engine from "blowing up." We have since filed a complaint with the California Bureau of Automotive Repair and provided documentation of the entire sequence. Based on this experience, I would not trust this shop for major diagnostics or high-cost repairs. At a minimum, get a second opinion before authorizing expensive work here. read more

She will consult with you b4 every decision, regarding repairs and will also find you the best price on parts. The mechanics are great as well, paying attention to details - they will even send you pictures of the problem, and they alert you to things you should get done, in the near future. Also, if you cannot pick up your vehicle, before they close, you can pay with your phone, and they will park your car out front (well lit) and securely leave your keys, in a locker. Honestly, I had high hopes for this place based on all the positive reviews, but I went there to have my check engine light checked. They told me it was a hose and wanted to charge me $680 for the part, which was only $70 new. It took me less than two minutes to change the hose myself, but that didn't fix the check engine light. I'm back to a low rating for these guys. I originally provided a low rating about 4 months ago, they reached out and then resolved the issue. That low rating was around communication issues. Now the same type of issues are occurring again. I emailed on Feb 18-25th with them. The guy helping me went from providing info and being ok with not making me do another diagnostic at their site(since I had one done for the issue I was having g elsewhere when Stress Free was closed) , and trying to fix the issue the way I wanted it to be addressed, to then pushing for the diagnostic to occur at their site, and then not getting back to me for four days between emails. I get that they are closed on Sundays but the lags in communication I have had in Feb and then in my prior time I reviewed them (4 months ago) has me officially walking away. The guy I went to twice in Palo Alto is responsive and gets the work done. Stress free is around the corner from my house in Menlo Park but not worth the frustration. ----- March 22, 2025 Update March 22, 2025 Darin, in response to your message below , I don't need to do anything further with Stress Free Auto Care, have no reason to do so. First, you are incorrect in your response. I requested having something fixed (a quote for the starter and then the brake pedal switch), and NOT paying for a diagnostic to happen at your site since I had a diagnostic done with the other mechanic and it found nothing. I didn't ever say I wanted advice on fixing my car without spending anything on my vehicle. The mechanic I had success with when I couldn't get help from your site fixed the issue. He was willing to try out what I had read could be the issue, and not charge me for further diagnostics. I reached out to you after asking about the starter since that was initially what I thought was the issue. My email to you on 2/21/2025 mentioned how the issues I was having I learned could actually be caused by the brake pedal switch needing to be replaced. The mechanic I ended up going to got back to me within a day, not 4 days later (you responded on 2/25/2025). And since replacing it a month ago, I haven't had any further issues with starting my car. When communication issues continue with a company, especially one that I spent $3000 with in November when first started as a customer of yours, it's time to move on. read more

My experience was anything BUT stress-free. Matter of fact it was STRESSFUL from start to finish. Brought my car in for a simple noise coming from my engine, thought it might be the AC unit, but was unsure. So made an appt for 10am dropoff. My car proceeded to sit outside until nearly 3pm. After 2+ hours of diagnosis & UNNECCSARILY EVACTUATING my AC freon, they called to say they need another day or so of diagnosing my vehicle, claiming it had multiple AC leaks & other issues they'd need to look into, to figure out where the noise in my engine is coming from. I immediately got a bad feeling they were being dishonest & asked to pickup my car. I had a coupon for $150 for the diagnosis fee, which I would've paid. Instead I was told I owe $300 for them filling up my AC, which they completely evacuated!!! It was 95 degrees out & I asked, so my AC is blowing cold? I was told yes, only to get to my car & be greeted with HOT AIR coming from my vents. The following day I brought my car to my regular mechanic in SF, whom has the HIGHEST RATED reviews in SF for his quality, honest, and pricing. What took Stress-Free Auto 2+ hours to MISDIAGNOSE ( either unintentionally or intentionally....I believe the latter after talking to my mechanic ), he diagnosed within 5 minutes. Turns out it was a simple idler pully = $28 part. He also checked my entire AC unit which Stress-Free claimed had multiple leaks at the gromets. My mechanic did a thorough inspection & found ZERO LEAKS. He even used a special dye & came to the conclusion that Stress-Free not only misdiagnosed my vehicle, but ALSO took over a FULL POUND of my AC refrigerant at a cost of $130-$150+ per pound, which they can easily recycle into another vehicle, while charging the next customer for the AC they took out of my vehicle UNNECESSARILY. My mechanic was visibly as frustrated as I was claiming any newbie mechanic would've been able to diagnose the noise coming from my engine upon opening the hood & seeing it's merely an idler pully and NOT THE AC unit. Also he was mystified why they would COMPLETELY EVACUATE my AC unit knowing there are NO LEAKS, even though they falsely claimed there were. I ended up contacting Stress-Free AGAIN, spoke with the manager, who then re-routed me to their district manager ( anytime a shop has a DM, you know it's about sales, not about value ). I frustrating spoke with their District Manager for nearly 45mins, until he agreed to refund my $300 charge for filling my AC, WHICH THEY NEVER DID! Instead they took $130-$150 worth of my AC Refrigerant, which he never refunded above the $300 I paid for the false diagnosis. I cornered him about their dishonesty & offered to provide my mechanic's information to confirm what they did was unprofessional & wrong. Instead he turned into a politician giving me the run-around for why my vehicle might have been misdiagnosed, even though my mechanic, who again is the top rated mechanic on Yelp in SF claimed any newbie mechanic with half a brain can easily see it's the pulley upon opening the hood. He said it shouldn't have taken more than 5 minutes to diagnose, MUCH LESS 2+ HOURS, then claiming they'd need my car another day or more to figure it out??? Does this sound Stress-Free to you??? After getting my $300 refund, but NOT my $130-$150 for the refrigerant they evacuated from my system UNNECCESSARILY, I decided to cut my losses & use it as a learning experience. This place reminded me A LOT of PepBoys which also is a chain that engages in questionable practices & pricing, based on my experience. Only reason I stopped here was being stuck in Palo Alto that day & thought it'd be a quick fix, which I later found based on mymechanic, should've been a 30 minute job. Instead they attempted to keep my vehicle multiple days, assuming I would trust their expertise. SO GLAD, my gut & intuition said otherwise. Turned out I was right NOT to trust Stress-Free any further & drove my car back to SF with NO AC, and had my normal mechanic perform the repairs. On another note, I did tell Stephanie at the front, I'd like my car back before end of day, as I don't live in the area. I was told I may need to leave it for SEVERAL DAYS while they diagnose & shop parts. REALLY??? My mechanic laughed his arse off after hearing this, having diagnosed my car within minutes. He says, they really took you for a ride. Regardless, dealing with Stress-Free felt more like dealing with a used car lot, and that's putting it nicely. And having to deal with their district manager for a refund felt like being on the phone with a politician rather than a professional organization. No accountability. Never coming back again, obviously & definitely would NOT recommend this place to my worst enemy. I'm sure their PR will do the normal blah-blah-blah response below, however damage is done. I came into the garage today explaining I had something wrong with my windshield washer. The windshield wipers work, but the washer doesn't. The manager kindly said, pop the hood and she showed me where the line at the top was chewed through and that the reservoir wouldn't hold any water because that was compromised as well by rats. I live in the country. In my book she went above and beyond she didn't have to take the time to look at that and gave me an honest estimate about it as well so I highly recommend recommend this garage for repairs. read more
