This meat market is incredibly impressive. Large selection of meats, including a lot of exotic meats. The selection of items they manage to fit in this space is pretty incredible. On a Saturday afternoon, it was definitely crowded, but they had a lot of staff and we were helped quickly. This place is amazing!! Definitely super crowded but the line moved fast. When you get in, grab a ticket at the counter to get in line. As a first timer, I was really impressed by the selection of meats and they are priced very fair. I actually will probably get my meat here now vs the grocery stores since you know it's fresh and the price is right. We got beef bones here for soup at a very reasonable price and they even cut it for you the way you want! Great place to pick up bulk meat for the holidays and parties since they do packages. We got a bulk 5lb pack of wings. I'm actually really excited to get my steaks here now since they have crazy cuts like tomahawk and delmonico that you don't see everywhere. He then told the two people he was waiting on that he was sorry!!!! I was mortified. Had he come up to me nicely and ask me to please move over so that he could wait on 2 people that were interested in what was in the case. I would have been happy to without another word. The folks who work there are super friendly! The weekend before thanksgiving, I decided to go there to pick up some turkey legs. Waited for about 20min. Got my temperature checked before I was allowed to go in. Got called pretty quickly. I wanted to try out some sausages too and the lady walked me through a lot of the varieties. She helped me pick out 3 different kinds of sausage while she continued to make some small talk. I made the sausages as soon as I got home and my partner said it was the best he ever had! (Oh jeez, for those of you who don't know what "tahn" is, it's "town" in localspeak, ok? Now, let me get back to my review already; it needs done...) Parking in the Strip District sucks, but you should know that by now, and not go ON A BUSY SATURDAY MORNING DURING FOOTBALL SEASON like I did. You should know that. I didn't because apparently I forget this every time I go down to the Strip, which was once every three to five years. Now, I have a reason to go back much more frequently! Ok, so I went in, and it's bustling with activity. I walk up to the counter and chat with one of the nice folks there, and voilá. Picanha. It was lovely and priced extremely well. The rest of the counter then hypnotized me and I also ended up getting two packs of the most marvelous bratwurst I've ever had... call it "Oktober-Festa!!" This is a pretty good local meat market, with a huge selection of different types of meats (we got Marrow Bones). It does get really busy on Saturdays, but even still we only waited about 5minutes for service. They have plenty of employees to take care of everyone. Prices aren't anything special though, so I wouldn't say it's worth a trip if you can find what you need closer. Parking on Saturdays in the strip district is really tough; basically consists of circling blocks until you find a rare street spot. Best place to get your meat in Pittsburgh! I won't shop anywhere else. The employees are very knowledgeable about the products they sell and ways to prepare them. I would say they get slammed around lunch time (because people don't like to start their mornings early in Pittsburgh). So I recommend curb side or getting there early in the morning. Also if you go in there please don't just point through the glass at what you want..the clerks can't see through the solid top and displacement of the glass. I ordered my Easter ham from Strip District Meats this year, and was quite pleased with it. I called a week before I wanted to pick it up, and they quoted me a price of $2.59/lb. for a Daisyfield bone in ham. Because I was expecting 5 guests (plus myself), I told them to give me a ham that was between 10-12 lbs., and no smaller than 10 lbs. When I picked it up, the ham ended up being 14.62 lbs., and they asked me if that was okay. I said it was, because I wanted to err on the side of caution, since this was my first time preparing a bone in ham for a group of guests. The total cost ended up being $37.87. After re-heating the ham (which was fully cooked) in the oven for several hours, glazing it and adorning it with pineapples, cherries, and cloves, I sliced and served it. The quality was excellent, by far outshining the quality of the garden variety spiral sliced ham I obtained from Giant Eagle last year for Easter. Of note, it was incredibly moist, and didn't taste salty at all--it was clear this was a high-quality product. All of my guests were very impressed and pleased with its quality. Needless to say, it provided leftovers for several more meals for all of us. Overall, I was very pleased with the quality of the ham that I ordered from Strip District Meats, and would definitely order from here again. My one criticism is that it would have been nice if the folks fulfilling my order would have called me back and confirmed that I would have been okay with a ham above the size range that I specified--although, to be fair, the guy who waited on me did ask if it was okay. read more

The main store is on the right, this has all the meats. On the left is the assorted frozen foods. Upon entering the main store, immediately turn left and grab a number from the dispensing reel. This place can get busy and that's your number. On your first visit, you may just want to stroll around and read the chalkboards that line the walls. This is one long isle with meat displayed on both sides. There are many exotic meats that are available. (Such as ostrich, llama, kangaroo, and rattlesnake.) On top of that there are can be several different forms of the meat as well. The staff is friendly and helpful so you can find the cuts your looking for. The other side has items like pierogi, pizza rolls, and fish sticks. I can't comment on this side of the store because I haven't tried it out yet. read more

I wanted an unusual cut of pork but didn't want it from the grocery at our from a factory farm, so I tried out this place. Even on a Saturday afternoon it was busy. I took a number and ogled the merchandise while waiting for my turn. I almost bought some boar osso buco but stuck to my list of pork blade and ground lamb. Aside for that I got meat for my holiday pate and I was helped in in ways I did not expect from a meat shop. The crew is very knowledgeable and will not only help you with choice of cut but will clean the meat for you. In my case this entailed beef, pork, chicken and liver (chicken liver). Great for finding obscure meats, but can be pricier than local grocers for standard cuts. My favorite meat is chicken hearts, and this is the only place I can find them. They're a great price too - about $2 a pound! Chicken breast I believe was over $6 a pound (most recently), which is significantly more than other places I shop. Obviously if you want the butcher over Perdue packaging, the extra cost is worth it, but just be aware. Also, I highly suggest not going on a weekend if you can help it. When I go on a Saturday or a Sunday I usually wait 10-20 minutes to be waited on. I am lucky that my new schedule is atypical which allows me to go on a random weekday in the afternoon, but when I was working until 5PM it was impossible to go except for the weekend. Having a day a week where they stay open until 6 or 7 would be idealistic from a patron standpoint. I definitely would have gone more often if the hours were more conducive. Staff is always super friendly, and I recommended SDM to everyone I know. read more

Stopped in for the first time this weekend with my wife. Prices were decent, we walked out with a 5 lb bag of fresh chicken wings and i got a few knockwurst. The wings impressed me. Though a few of them still had some feathers, what struck me is the size of the wings. they were decidedly smaller than those from Sam's and GE. Then it hit me...these were likely not pumped full of tyson steroids and such. They cooked up nice in the air fryer as well. The knockwurst (I got the spicy ones) are delicious, with a great snap.
