Incredible experience! I booked via OpenTable and put that we were celebrating a birthday, which they acknowledged when we were being seated! Service was prompt and I loved seeing how busy it was on a weeknight! We got a dirty vodka martini and the sgt pepper old fashioned and both were delicious. One of the top dirty martinis I've had! Any questions we had about the menu were answered promptly and we enjoyed everything we ordered! We started with the parker house rolls which came with a raspberry lemonade jam which was delish! I got the steak frites which was absolutely incredible, cooked to perfection and so tasty. My boyfriend got the filet mignon and subbed mashed potatoes instead of balsamic potatoes. We also got a side of mac & cheese which came with cheeto crumbs on top (so good). I can't say enough good things about this menu! I thought that for the quality of the food it was reasonably priced. i had some time before a show at The Byham, and this restaurant is connected to the Theater District Box Office, so I wandered in after picking up my ticket and grabbed a seat at the bar. It's pretty dark in there, so they have those little green shaded lamps at the bar. I went with the Cardamadre, because it has pineapple and absinthe and sounded interesting. Definitely glad I chose that - it was fruity, but not overly sweet, with some bitterness from the absinthe and spices. I also had an order of fries, which were shoestring cut and came with a garlic aioli. They were a good snack before the show, and while $9 for fries is steep for fast casual, was not bad for a solo diner at a seated restaurant. read more

The food was excellent. The tartare was one of the best I've had I just didn't love the bread they served it with. I ordered a dirty martini and asked for a regular olives but it came with blue cheese olives. We put in our appetizer and didn't see our server for at least 20 minutes, we finished our app before she came back to take our order. The steak was cooked perfectly but server disappeared again. Wow, what a Pittsburgh gem I'd never visited before! We were wandering around searching for dinner in the city, and we came across this place online. Luckily the kind host was able to get us on the wait list on a Friday night, and we were able to get a table! I wish I had more photos, but we enjoyed wine, bread, some apps, and I had a great steak! Our server was delightful and so kind. The food all hit the spot, and I can't stop thinking about great the thin fries were! We had reservations at 5pm for four people. Since we went right when it opened, it wasn't busy yet. The inside has a rustic feel with things like plaid chairs and antlers. It consists of a very nice bar area and several tables. We asked to sit outside since it was nice out which was our mistake. DO NOT SIT OUTSIDE ON THEIR PATIO. If you're prone to getting bit by mosquitos, you WILL get bit. We were outside long enough to order food (I looked at the menu online ahead of time and knew what we wanted to family style) and it was enough for me to get NINE very painful mosquito bites. We asked to move inside very quickly and they were accommodating. After that the meal went uphill. The bartender that evening definitely hit the mark of sophistication that comes with this drink while allowing me to maintain the persona of a "manly man". Clover club (Waitress recommendation): On this evening, I was attending a musical at Benedum Center, so as a result I knew that I could delve in a couple more drinks. Anyone who knows me knows that my favorite thing to do at any restaurant is ask my waiter or waitress for recommendations and she did not disappoint me. I am not a "sweets" person, but this drink was like drinking liquid candy. This reminded me of one of my favorite hard candies that I used to get from my grandma, Arcor Strawberry Filled Bon Bons. I loved this drink so much that I ordered two. - Food: Appetizer - Shrimp scampi: This was the night's special and even though to this day I still cannot say that any seafood in the state of PA is the best, since it is a landlock state. However, I can say this did not disappoint. The side of sourdough bread meshed well with the juice that remained. Entree - Filet Mignon (Medium rare): Steak steak steak....and more steak. Everywhere you turn in Pittsburgh, there is probably a steakhouse within a mile and everyone believes their steak is the best. Although, as any steak lover knows, it is not just the presentation that matters, but how well you prepare it and I can say this steak was definitely prepared well. It was very flavorful and the only issue I had was that there wasn't anymore. It was served with a side of potatoes that were perfectly crispy on the outside while being soft and warm on the inside. Dessert - Pot de crème w/ cookies: By the time I reached dessert, I could tell I was already in my "happy place". I could've eaten a banana as dessert and thought it was amazing, but knew that wouldn't be fair to you all. So, while I waited for them to prepare this dish, I cleansed my pallet with A LOT of water. Overall, it was divine, even though I couldn't pronounce it. My only regret was not dipping my cookies.... Post-dessert - Caesar Salad w/ White Anchovies: As usual, I have a distorted sense of how long it takes to kill time before a show, so we kept it basic and went with the old classic, Caesar salad. However, before my waitress walked away she highly recommended I add anchovies. I know, anchovies on a salad?? no....but actually...yes. The texture and flavor added that kick to the grass we all know they pulled from the ground in the small garden in the back. Service: 5 / 5 - Normally, I rarely have an issue with any service at the restaurants that I go to. I am a very simple person, bring me my food, check on me every now and then, don't show me my bill, and be able to answer any questions that I may have. However, this waitress was definitely up there with service that I would love to expect every time I go. She was very attentive, gave me amazing recommendations, and was able to maintain a basic conversation. She definitely went above and beyond, and her tip reflected that. Whenever I return, I wouldn't mind having her as a regular. Vibe: 5 / 5 - Right off the bat, Meat & Potatoes set the bar high. The host was very friendly and made banter to break that simple awkwardness that exists when you walk up to a restaurant initially. What even made it better, was the existence of what I call a "hype man". The moment this person appeared, he made it known of the vibe that would be set that evening. Normally, I try to avoid eating at the bar because I enjoy the interaction you get from a waiter or waitress, but they almost did sell me on it. Overall, this place definitely gives you that trendy, but classy experience. Overall: 5 / 5 - Whenever I go to a restaurant, my motto has always been, "every experience is a new experience". Just because I give five stars this time, doesn't mean it is always guaranteed. However, it would be an injustice if I gave this place anything, but five stars. Where to start?! My husband and I were visiting Pittsburgh for the Steelers game, while researching restaurants this was a top contender, and it did not disappoint. It is a small intimate restaurant, cool decor on the walls, and welcoming staff. Our server was so sweet and helpful, gave great recommendations during our dinner. To start we got the tuna tartare- probably one of the best tuna tartare I've had. The rice cake was so light and airy, while the tuna was perfectly flavored and fresh. For dinner, we split the filet mignon which came with scalloped potatoes and we ordered a side of mashed potatoes. My husband is a mashed potatoes snob, he literally licked the plate. We ordered our filet medium rare, it was cooked to perfection and really loved the mushrooms on top. The scalloped potatoes were also divine, so crispy on the outside but fluffy on the inside. Together, the two dishes hit all the comfort food notes but with a little extra flair. The collard greens I tried were a standout, too. The restaurant felt more like a bar than a restaurant, with seating in a galley shaped large room dominated by the central bar. What I could do without: The prices...some entrees were up in the $65.00 range which I thought was a bit much when the burger was affordable at about $21.00. Just all over the place prices. Our waiter mentioned right away that the Beef Wellington would take about an hour, so we ordered it early. It came out right on time--and it was hands down the best Wellington I've ever had. Meat & Potatoes is a solid choice in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh. I love its proximity to the cultural district, so it's a great place to stop before or after a show. There's also lots of bars close by, including my favorite in the city, Con Alma. Upon entering, Meat & Potatoes has a speak easy vibe tucked away in the Cabaret Theater entrance. The restaurant itself is fairly small with a large bar in the middle. The tables along the wall are relatively close to one another, so it makes it difficult to avoid overhearing conversations of the guests right next to you. Nonetheless, my husband and I had a great time! We ordered the rolls to start off our meal. The salted butter was a special touch, but the strawberry pink peppercorn sauce was the star of the show! The mix of sweet and savory was perfection with the mini homemade dinner rolls. As well, I also ordered the lobster bisque to try. This wasn't my favorite dish; it actually came out pretty lukewarm and didn't have a strong sherry taste, which I like. However, the extra attention to detail with the design on top left me excited that I tried the dish! For our entrées, my husband ordered the vegetarian meatloaf, and he loved the dish. He ordered a side of truffle fries as well, and they were perfection; the truffle oil was the perfect strength, just enough to taste it and not enough to overpower the fries. I may just be back for the fries alone. For my meal, I had the filet mignon with blue cheese. It was cooked to perfection and seasoned well. The blue cheese was the perfection addition to the steak as well as the duck fat potatoes! I also ordered the strawberry shortcake to take home. Everything was packaged in its own individual containers. The pound cake had a crispy crust with a density that made the dish decadent. I loved the lemon marscapone cream and the sugared strawberries. The strudel was the "icing" on the pound cake! After a long day our group ended up finding Meat and Potatoes. It's tucked away in a theater and you can feel the history in the building. I opted for the club burger minus the egg and a few others in our party for the pork chop. The pork chops is massive and could easily feed two people. The meat was juicy and plump. The burger was good but it needed a little salt. I needed that extra hint of seasoning but that was the only thing missing. It was still a juicy burger with delicious pork belly. One year later and the same still holds true - Meat and Potatoes is a total food paradise! The service was excellent, as it is at every DeShantz restaurant. The food: We started with Parker house rolls and a Caesar salad. The rolls are soft, warm, tasty and everything you want to start a meal. The pear jam was soooo tasty, and the flaky sea salt on top gave a perfect salty-sweet flavor combo. The anchovies on my Caesar took it to the next level! So much good flavor and texture - umami and crunchy. Get the half chicken, folks! My picture does not do justice - it's huge and truly a half chicken. The depth of flavor was incredible. Crispy skin was the chef's kiss. The broccolini underneath was a complete flavor bomb of deliciousness. My wife got scallops and cleared her plate. My little taste had delectable flavor. We also got carrots for a side... my picture was blurry. But the garam masala added such a unique flavor. The carrots are spectacular. We ended with the pumpkin cake - WOW! My partner--the meat and potato eater in our relationship--had steak with a mountain of fries. The steak was fine but he really liked the fries, which reminded him of Steak and Shakes', but better. We might have lingered over coffee and dessert, but we found the interior temperature chilly and so broke it off early. Being from the Pacific Northwest, I can never pass up a good salmon, and this salmon, although skeptical with the egg yolk and the crispy skin served on top, it tasted amazing. My bar tender suggested the coconut cream pie, it was a great end to dinner. The 3 has more to do with management charging a 3% operational fee. Everyone knows prices have fluctuated up and down and menu prices have fluctuated as well. This statement on the receipt just takes away from an additional tip and positive reviews. I love tipping above and beyond and I would have left the same to your amazing staff. Don't detour me by by adding fees. I would rather you hide 3% additional costs in the menu. I am sure it doesn't affect some customers. But for me, it makes a statement that you are tipping for me, and taking away my opportunity to reward your staff. read more

I really wanted to like this place. After all the hype, I wanted a delicious steak and directed my group to meat and potatoes. So, starting from the hostess, she was amazing. Super friendly, super accommodating and was a friendly greeting when we walked in. Then we get to our server. His personality was a bit dry. Not really personable and therefore came off a Lil unfriendly, but I don't believe its an intentional unfriendly, just a lil off...... Getting to the bar first. My cocktail , a titos lemon drop, was done well. A little on the bitter side, but wasn't bad. My friends gold rush, not so much. It had what seemed to be eggwhites as a foam on top. And some bitters. A gold rush (1 part whiskey- 1 part fresh lemon juice and topped with either honey syrup or agave syrup or a deep amber agave) even if it were topped with simple syrup, it would be more like the recipe.) The rest of our party ordered whiskey neats. Pour was typical ratio and to the point. Now for the food. The Parker rolls were super salty, almost inedible salty and the butter came out In a super solid, almost frozen, butter disk. For me, steak houses usually know to have a somewhat softened butter for the clientele to have ease. Especially when serving hot Parker rolls. The ceaser salad was actually the best thing we had, and it wasnt the best ceaser I've ever eaten Now for the steaks......... Disappointed!!!!! The new york, served already sliced but is drowning in a demi sauce that makes it almost inedible. Not enough seasoning ,tastes like it wasnt even salted for cooking. The demi was so over powering i couldnt even taste the meat. I forced myself to eat the $76 sauce dish. The pave potatoes was described so deliciously, epic fail. It looks like a deep fried French toast stick. It does have salt and would be better if maybe served in a different style. It really isnt what is described. Not horrible, but not great. The filet mignon, again, tastes like it wasn't seasoned before cooking and is served drowning in a mushroom sauce. For a place called meat and potatoes, they sure dont like to showcase the meat. It shoukd be called sauce and potatoe accents...... the mashed potatoes are a level almost being soupy. Two of our table got the mashed potatoes and it was so soupy it was like eating cream of wheat. Extra creamy and buttery yes, but not the best mashed potatoes. And actually borderline not being able to be called mashed versus creamed. I had to ask for the salt and pepper and im a person who doesnt usually add any salt. I can never have enough pepper, but salt, I usually dont need if seasoned well. I found myself salting repeatedly and over everything. The Parker rolls had the salt they forgot dor the steaks....... The corn succatash was the best thing on the plate and again, it was the best corn succatash I've ever had. Overall, I wish I could have given this place a great review, but I actually felt robbed when I got my bill. $120 for sauce and afterward, I just felt unsatisfied and the sauce flavor lingered. Im hoping they can learn to highlight their namesake. If you call yourself meat and potatoes, it should be about quality, we'll flavored meat dishes and the same for the potatoes dishes. Visited my friend who lives in Pittsburgh and we were going to a show at Heinz Hall. She recommended we go here and she was not wrong. Really great menu and cool ambiance inside. I had the beef carpaccio and a Caesar salad. The salad was a bit underdressed for my taste (not that I want it swimming), but I also probably could asked for more. The carpaccio was fantastic and extremely generous in portion size. My friend enjoyed her mussels and Brussels sprouts which were also a generous portion. We shared the Parker house rolls which were also great. Definitely worth going. read more
