What a hidden gem in downtown Pittsburgh! Meat & Potatoes is a stunning fine dining restaurant with a beautiful atmosphere and exceptional service. The food was absolutely 10/10 from start to finish. We ordered the Tomahawk steak, which was massive and easily enough to share between 3-4 people. The marble potatoes and carrots were the perfect accompaniments and complemented the steak beautifully. To drink, we enjoyed the Hibiscus Berry and Dreamlife mocktails, both of which were refreshing and thoughtfully crafted. One thing to note for visitors from out of state: there are a few additional fees beyond the listed menu prices and tax, so the final bill may be higher than expected. That said, the quality of the food, generous portions, and overall experience made it well worth it. If you're looking for a memorable dining experience in Pittsburgh, Meat & Potatoes is definitely worth a visit. Decadent Burger, Strong Cocktails, and Worth the Hype Came to Meat & Potatoes for dinner with business colleagues after a recommendation, and it absolutely delivered. We started with strong, well-made cocktails, then I ordered the Rossini Burger -- a double patty topped with a generous slab of fried foie gras, red onion jam, and mustard. First time customer: I've been wanting to dine here for sometime. My husband and son and I went on a Sunday evening around 7pm. I called in advance to check and see if there was a certain dress code required ( because we were outdoors in athletic clothes) and came here on a whim. Jeff the hostess was kind and inviting telling us none was required. So we went. ! I assumed we were going to pay around $150-200 for dinner because I checked the menu beforehand and the prices were high, but if the food was good , we don't care about pricing. I'd pay anything for a good steak. I ordered the NY strip, with a side of creamed spinach cooked medium rare.. it was delicious! The food was well seasoned and my steak temp was right on the money.. my husband and son ordered burgers ( medium) for my husband, (medium well) for my son. My son got the side Mac n cheese( noodles were cooked perfect al dente) and seasoned well. Cheese sauce was tasty also. My husband got fries and they were crispy, and well seasoned. The food WAS delicious! Here is the reason I gave them 3 stars.. the cleanliness of the dining room was my MAIN issue.. I feel that if I am paying $70 for a steak there is NO reason I should be looking at smudged , dusty mirrors on the wall with obvious finger prints on them . The mirrors looked like they haven't been properly cleaned in months. Also there was someone's greasy finger prints right behind my husbands head on the booth he was sitting at. I clean for a living, and I am very detail oriented at my job.. on Amazon you can buy a 5 pack of window squee-gees and with a few sprays of glass cleaner and a few downward swipes your mirrors/glass is streak free in under 30 seconds. And greasy finger prints on a leather booth headrest makes no sense to me.. spray and wipe it.. when I see details like this in the dining room that are unkept.. it then makes me wonder if the kitchen is dirty and unkept also... and wonder if MY $70 steak is being prepped and handled in a clean kitchen...??? This is my concern.. the dinner bill came close to $200 and Sabrina our waitress was wonderful and we tipped her approx 30-40 % .. but it's a bummer that the food tasted so good but the dining room was untidy. I ordered a dirty martini and asked for a regular olives but it came with blue cheese olives. Incredible experience! I booked via OpenTable and put that we were celebrating a birthday, which they acknowledged when we were being seated! Service was prompt and I loved seeing how busy it was on a weeknight! We got a dirty vodka martini and the sgt pepper old fashioned and both were delicious. One of the top dirty martinis I've had! Any questions we had about the menu were answered promptly and we enjoyed everything we ordered! We started with the parker house rolls which came with a raspberry lemonade jam which was delish! I got the steak frites which was absolutely incredible, cooked to perfection and so tasty. My boyfriend got the filet mignon and subbed mashed potatoes instead of balsamic potatoes. i had some time before a show at The Byham, and this restaurant is connected to the Theater District Box Office, so I wandered in after picking up my ticket and grabbed a seat at the bar. It's pretty dark in there, so they have those little green shaded lamps at the bar. I went with the Cardamadre, because it has pineapple and absinthe and sounded interesting. Definitely glad I chose that - it was fruity, but not overly sweet, with some bitterness from the absinthe and spices. I also had an order of fries, which were shoestring cut and came with a garlic aioli. They were a good snack before the show, and while $9 for fries is steep for fast casual, was not bad for a solo diner at a seated restaurant. read more

Luckily the kind host was able to get us on the wait list on a Friday night, and we were able to get a table! I wish I had more photos, but we enjoyed wine, bread, some apps, and I had a great steak! We had reservations at 5pm for four people. Since we went right when it opened, it wasn't busy yet. The inside has a rustic feel with things like plaid chairs and antlers. It consists of a very nice bar area and several tables. We asked to sit outside since it was nice out which was our mistake. DO NOT SIT OUTSIDE ON THEIR PATIO. If you're prone to getting bit by mosquitos, you WILL get bit. We were outside long enough to order food (I looked at the menu online ahead of time and knew what we wanted to family style) and it was enough for me to get NINE very painful mosquito bites. We asked to move inside very quickly and they were accommodating. After that the meal went uphill. The bartender that evening definitely hit the mark of sophistication that comes with this drink while allowing me to maintain the persona of a "manly man". Clover club (Waitress recommendation): On this evening, I was attending a musical at Benedum Center, so as a result I knew that I could delve in a couple more drinks. Anyone who knows me knows that my favorite thing to do at any restaurant is ask my waiter or waitress for recommendations and she did not disappoint me. I am not a "sweets" person, but this drink was like drinking liquid candy. This reminded me of one of my favorite hard candies that I used to get from my grandma, Arcor Strawberry Filled Bon Bons. I loved this drink so much that I ordered two. - Food: Appetizer - Shrimp scampi: This was the night's special and even though to this day I still cannot say that any seafood in the state of PA is the best, since it is a landlock state. However, I can say this did not disappoint. The side of sourdough bread meshed well with the juice that remained. Entree - Filet Mignon (Medium rare): Steak steak steak....and more steak. Everywhere you turn in Pittsburgh, there is probably a steakhouse within a mile and everyone believes their steak is the best. Although, as any steak lover knows, it is not just the presentation that matters, but how well you prepare it and I can say this steak was definitely prepared well. It was very flavorful and the only issue I had was that there wasn't anymore. It was served with a side of potatoes that were perfectly crispy on the outside while being soft and warm on the inside. Dessert - Pot de crème w/ cookies: By the time I reached dessert, I could tell I was already in my "happy place". I could've eaten a banana as dessert and thought it was amazing, but knew that wouldn't be fair to you all. So, while I waited for them to prepare this dish, I cleansed my pallet with A LOT of water. Overall, it was divine, even though I couldn't pronounce it. My only regret was not dipping my cookies.... Post-dessert - Caesar Salad w/ White Anchovies: As usual, I have a distorted sense of how long it takes to kill time before a show, so we kept it basic and went with the old classic, Caesar salad. However, before my waitress walked away she highly recommended I add anchovies. I know, anchovies on a salad?? no....but actually...yes. The texture and flavor added that kick to the grass we all know they pulled from the ground in the small garden in the back. Service: 5 / 5 - Normally, I rarely have an issue with any service at the restaurants that I go to. I am a very simple person, bring me my food, check on me every now and then, don't show me my bill, and be able to answer any questions that I may have. However, this waitress was definitely up there with service that I would love to expect every time I go. She was very attentive, gave me amazing recommendations, and was able to maintain a basic conversation. She definitely went above and beyond, and her tip reflected that. Whenever I return, I wouldn't mind having her as a regular. Vibe: 5 / 5 - Right off the bat, Meat & Potatoes set the bar high. The host was very friendly and made banter to break that simple awkwardness that exists when you walk up to a restaurant initially. What even made it better, was the existence of what I call a "hype man". The moment this person appeared, he made it known of the vibe that would be set that evening. Normally, I try to avoid eating at the bar because I enjoy the interaction you get from a waiter or waitress, but they almost did sell me on it. Overall, this place definitely gives you that trendy, but classy experience. Overall: 5 / 5 - Whenever I go to a restaurant, my motto has always been, "every experience is a new experience". To start we got the tuna tartare- probably one of the best tuna tartare I've had. The rice cake was so light and airy, while the tuna was perfectly flavored and fresh. Meat & Potatoes is a solid choice in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh. I love its proximity to the cultural district, so it's a great place to stop before or after a show. There's also lots of bars close by, including my favorite in the city, Con Alma. Upon entering, Meat & Potatoes has a speak easy vibe tucked away in the Cabaret Theater entrance. The restaurant itself is fairly small with a large bar in the middle. The tables along the wall are relatively close to one another, so it makes it difficult to avoid overhearing conversations of the guests right next to you. Nonetheless, my husband and I had a great time! We ordered the rolls to start off our meal. The salted butter was a special touch, but the strawberry pink peppercorn sauce was the star of the show! The mix of sweet and savory was perfection with the mini homemade dinner rolls. As well, I also ordered the lobster bisque to try. This wasn't my favorite dish; it actually came out pretty lukewarm and didn't have a strong sherry taste, which I like. However, the extra attention to detail with the design on top left me excited that I tried the dish! For our entrées, my husband ordered the vegetarian meatloaf, and he loved the dish. He ordered a side of truffle fries as well, and they were perfection; the truffle oil was the perfect strength, just enough to taste it and not enough to overpower the fries. I may just be back for the fries alone. For my meal, I had the filet mignon with blue cheese. It was cooked to perfection and seasoned well. The blue cheese was the perfection addition to the steak as well as the duck fat potatoes! I also ordered the strawberry shortcake to take home. Everything was packaged in its own individual containers. The pound cake had a crispy crust with a density that made the dish decadent. I loved the lemon marscapone cream and the sugared strawberries. The strudel was the "icing" on the pound cake! After a long day our group ended up finding Meat and Potatoes. It's tucked away in a theater and you can feel the history in the building. I opted for the club burger minus the egg and a few others in our party for the pork chop. The pork chops is massive and could easily feed two people. The meat was juicy and plump. The burger was good but it needed a little salt. I needed that extra hint of seasoning but that was the only thing missing. It was still a juicy burger with delicious pork belly. The food: We started with Parker house rolls and a Caesar salad. The rolls are soft, warm, tasty and everything you want to start a meal. The pear jam was soooo tasty, and the flaky sea salt on top gave a perfect salty-sweet flavor combo. The anchovies on my Caesar took it to the next level! Being from the Pacific Northwest, I can never pass up a good salmon, and this salmon, although skeptical with the egg yolk and the crispy skin served on top, it tasted amazing. My bar tender suggested the coconut cream pie, it was a great end to dinner. The 3 has more to do with management charging a 3% operational fee. Everyone knows prices have fluctuated up and down and menu prices have fluctuated as well. This statement on the receipt just takes away from an additional tip and positive reviews. I love tipping above and beyond and I would have left the same to your amazing staff. Don't detour me by by adding fees. I would rather you hide 3% additional costs in the menu. It looks like a deep fried French toast stick. It does have salt and would be better if maybe served in a different style. It really isnt what is described. Not horrible, but not great. The filet mignon, again, tastes like it wasn't seasoned before cooking and is served drowning in a mushroom sauce. For a place called meat and potatoes, they sure dont like to showcase the meat. It shoukd be called sauce and potatoe accents...... the mashed potatoes are a level almost being soupy. Two of our table got the mashed potatoes and it was so soupy it was like eating cream of wheat. Extra creamy and buttery yes, but not the best mashed potatoes. And actually borderline not being able to be called mashed versus creamed. I had to ask for the salt and pepper and im a person who doesnt usually add any salt. I can never have enough pepper, but salt, I usually dont need if seasoned well. I found myself salting repeatedly and over everything. The Parker rolls had the salt they forgot dor the steaks....... The corn succatash was the best thing on the plate and again, it was the best corn succatash I've ever had. Overall, I wish I could have given this place a great review, but I actually felt robbed when I got my bill. $120 for sauce and afterward, I just felt unsatisfied and the sauce flavor lingered. Im hoping they can learn to highlight their namesake. If you call yourself meat and potatoes, it should be about quality, we'll flavored meat dishes and the same for the potatoes dishes. My boyfriend took me here to celebrate our 2 year anniversary and I was so spoiled with this amazing experience. It was such a fancy and adorable place to celebrate! I loved the aura here -- the dim ambiance with lit candles made it so cozy, fancy, and intimate. Here's what we tried: Root to Berry: - A non-alcoholic seltzer flavored with strawberry, lime, & ginger - I didn't like the ginger flavor in it, it made it too spicy DreamLife: - Another non-alcoholic seltzer flavored with vanilla, lemon, orange, & orange blossom water - The orange & vanilla combo was yummy - I liked this one a lot more than the Root to Berry - Wasn't too sweet which I enjoyed Roasted Bone Marrow: - Interestingly topped with caper-raisin relish, celery, & marcona almonds, but surprisingly so good - Paired with sourdough - Toppings were soo yummy especially the raisins that added a sweet twist to it Filet Mignon: - I ordered this medium rare, and oh my god it was SOOO tender it literally melted in my mouth - The only reason I didn't enjoy this dish as much is because the filet mignon was topped with blue cheese which I don't like -- I should have gotten it without blue cheese - The roasted potatoes that it came with was the perfect softness & paired well with the cognac sauce, but it was a bit too bland Steak Frites: - Like the Filet Mignon, I ordered the NY strip medium rare and it was so tender, so juicy, so yummy & literally melted in my mouth - Loved the buttery, garlic sauce that topped this steak. It paired SO well together - Normally comes with rosemary fries, but my boyfriend loves truffle fries so we asked for a substitution & they were so generous to make that accommodation that for us! - The truffle flavor was so rich, but I thought the fries were just slightly overcooked. It was really crispy, and I wish it had been a little softer, but overall were still great To top off our meal, we ended with the lemon & blueberry creme brulee which was also so mind blowing yummy. The custard was so rich, and I loved the layer or caramelized sugar on top. I also really liked the unique lemon flavor that made it taste extra special. The service here was fantastic. They were so polite, accommodating, and well-mannered. They changed all our utensils after every course. I would highly recommend coming here to celebrate a special occasion! read more
