When you walk in, it instantly feels like you are transported into a Rocky or Creed movie with the energy S&S brings. It is so easy to lock in and focus on your workout because you are surrounded by so many like minded people who are there to do the exact same thing. It seems like we all have one goal in mind and that is to be the best and strongest version of ourselves. The staff is super friendly, the members are always willing to lend you a hand racking weights or correcting your form without feeling like you're an idiot for doing it incorrectly in the first place haha, and the owners are so nice and knowledgeable - you can tell they really care about this space and it's members. The gym has everything from neck machines to free benches and etc. The reason I rated this 3 stars is because of the cleanliness, the bathroom and entire establishment needs to be cleaned and re done. Good gym because of the equipment. However, customer service isn't great. Sauna isn't great, you have to tell them to put it on and it only stays on for thirty minutes and so you have to keep returning to the front desk to keep it on. This is the greatest gym in the great United States of America. I recently read a review where a dope left a 1 star review over some dust on equipment? Try lifting at the gym in Bombay I trained at in late 70s as a young teenager. You would be lucky if one piece of equipment didn't smell like elephant sh@t or have actual elephant sh&t on it. And some moron wants to complain about dust? Thats pussification of America at its finest. When my family came over here during the Reagan years(God Bless him) Mr Robert Bonham welcomed a skinny 21 year old kid who didn't know anything about nutrition(other then my moms simosas) or anything about the great Arthur Jones nautilus equipment. Mr Bonham showed me how to bench press 45 lbs then 95 lbs then 135 lbs. He showed me how to believe in myself. One night in 1988 at my Teamo some crook tried to roll me for my wonderful products I have and I had enough strength to protect myself thanks to Strong and Shapely. Mr Paul has taken over this historical landmark and hasn't missed a beat. Many of the youngsters in the place will learn far more educational stuff that will help them in life from a weightlifter who has their name on their belt then they would from a dopey science teacher. I recently heard two of my training partners Matt and Mark bothering the staff to install a Turkish steam bath in the locker room. I ask that they do not because I have seen some really weird stuff go on in those steam rooms especially when I went to a gym in San Francisco as I was helping my cousin Rapesh open his store. Me and my boyfriend decided that planet fitness didn't fit our fitness goals anymore and we needed to find a new gym. We ended up signing a 6 month contract because we were planning out moving to a different town. Cleanliness: This gym is definitely not maintained like other gyms. Many of the machines are broken or rusted, and the place is barely kept clean. History: Many iconic body builder have come to this gym at one point in time. They even post pictures of top body builder on their walls. Machine and weights: This gym has a ton of equipments and everyone respects gym etiquette. A lot of the people that come here have been coming here for a long time. A lot of them are extremely friendly and give great advice. What I loved about this gym is the atmosphere. Being in a place were everyone is focused on getting stronger, made me what to do the very same. I definitely recommend this spot if you need to be surrounded by stronger people. BEST GYM IN NJ! Every machine imaginable with a friendly staff. Bob has built a powerhouse gym. No tools running around flexing in the mirrors. Some guys like to chat too much instead of train but every gym has that. Dumbbells go higher than any other gym Ive been to. Sauna, tanning booth, supplements, and crossfit (if you're into that) are available. Only thing I wish they had was towel service. Price isnt bad either- $99 down plus $30/month for life. I hate to say this is the best gym I've ever been to (simply because I don't want it to get over crowded) but it truly is the Disney land of all gyms. Strong & shapely is a wonderland of all things you want and need in the realm of doing right by your body. The lifting sessions in there are limitless because there's about 2-3 of the same machine (which is amazing cuz no one has to use the same machines if they don't want to- who doesn't love options?) the cardio is great, about 20 treadmills, some bikes & ellipticals. I normally try to stay away from negative Yelp postings but in this instance I feel that my story needs to be told to prevent others from going through similar situations. The other day I watched as my dear friends significant other was bullied by the BOB...the "owner" of the gym. My friends significant other was in the middle of a training session when Bob came over and demanded that she take her bag off the gym floor and store it somewhere else. After trying to explain to him that she felt more comfortable with the bag by her side because of the valuables it contained, the owner began to bully her, yell at her, and eventually curse at her. I have been to my share of gyms before, and no management is perfect, however I have NEVER seen anyone be spoken to or treated like that. There are (were) paying customers at the establishment. To belittle and bully them in the middle of the gym floor for choosing to hold onto their own personal property, baffles the mind. We later found out that this was not the first incident in which Bob had been called out for harassing the gym members. Unfortunately that does not surprise me in the lease. I do not know what personal issues this guy has, but he is in no mental state to me the manager of any sort of business establishment. My friend and his girlfriend will be taking their business elsewhere. As for you Bob, you should be ashamed of yourself. What type of man speaks to a woman that way? How would you feel if someone spoke to your mother or wife or god forbid Daughter that way? That IS someones daughter Bob!!! I will pray for you. read more

Decided to check this gym out since there was a great deal on Groupon for a six month membership for $69. It was close to home and was open 24hrs on weekdays so it sounded pretty good. The gym is all on one massive floor with a lot of equipment that is categorized mostly by body part and given their little region across the gym. Also at certain parts in the gym its just really cramped with equipment a little room to move around. After you sign up every time you come in you have to have your hand scanned by the front desk which I really didn't like cause that a lot of hands that gets scanned on it and god knows if and how often the scanner is cleaned. I always head right to the head and give my hand a good scrub down with soap immediately after. The gym is really dated, most of the equipment are old and some handles for the cable machines can be a pain to find. The boxing area is kind of crammed in with the treadmills, a rock climbing machine and ellipticals. Dumbbells go all the way up to 250lbs, yeah that's not a typo. There is a lot of "meat-heads" and "jersey shore guido" types that go here but they really didn't bother me for the most part and I just did my thing and moved on. I did see for the first time massive chicks, like seriously strong women. I just finished a set of bench doing 285lbs (6-8 reps) and this woman asked if I could spot her, I said "Sure, what do you need a spot on?" and she just points at my bench and asks if she could work in. I was like "Really!??" and in my head I'm thinking "this chick is about to wreck herself" but I'm a good spotter so I agree. She proceeds to do 8 reps and a little help from me to get 10 reps with the most perfect form I have ever seen applied to a bench press. Yeah, I felt like a little girl in her presence but she was cool and even gave me some tips. Parking lot is pretty big so you should have no problems with that, bathrooms are a bit old but clean for the most part. They do have a small sauna and lockers in the bathrooms as well. All in all its a gym for dedicated fitness junkies and being an average joe here might be a little intimidating for most but the price is really good and affordable. You might even learn a thing or to about diet and fitness programs as most of the members a more than willing to talk your ear off about stuff like that which was a plus for me cause I like to learn new things and do research when I get home to complement my regimen if it's effective. Also though I should note that there really isn't anyone walking around too often to clean equipment regularly the times I was there and if you have questions the only person working there stays at the front desk. As for now I am sticking to the gym on campus at Rutgers since it is cleaner and equipped with better equipment and included in my tuition haha. Thanks for taking the time to read my review. Let me just say that the low rating is not the equipment, the gym is dream, bev Francis in nj but more raw. Equipment extremely well maintained. Membership price reasonable for the amount of equipment that's available. when it comes to customer service the owner needs some sort of training on how to deal with those that keep his lights on. Can't treat customers like you are doing them a favor when they are actually paying. The most basic rule when dealing with customers is"if they walk into your business acknowledge them even if you don't like them. If you want to GET IT DONE, if you want to WORKOUT, if you want to be around members who are FOCUSED and are determined to GET FIT or GET BIG or GET HEALTHY............THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU!!! S&S has some of the best old equipment you will NO LONGER FIND....as well as newer state of the art machines. They have tons of dumbells. A more than adequate CARDIO area with treadmills, stepmills, elypticals and stairmasters. A heavy bag, a rock climbing wall (which i've never seen in another gym). In addition, S&S is now offering FREE CROSSFIT CLASSES throughout the week which is unheard of. in case you were unsure, I am a huge fan of S&S, it's the best GYM around with lots of parking, you will see celebrities on occasion, pro & novice Men & women bodybuilders and fitness models working out here as well. Surround yourself with who you wish to emulate..... For the folks new to working out or misinformed, let me make it clear, if you want to LOSE WEIGHT..............YOU MUST LIFT WEIGHT.....Doing CARDIO ONLY (zumba, treadmills etc) will burn muscle, slow your metabolism and ultimately force you to gain more weight....make sure 50% of your workout is resistance training. I love this gym. Unlike other places it is not crowded, and people mind their business. When you go here it's literally workout and leave. No bullshitting, and having people take forever because they just want to talk the entire time. Had every machine and equipment you could ask for!! And the music was AWESOME!! All they played was awesome EDM; so good I didn't have to use my own music the place was also 24/7, BIG PLUS. I absolutely LOVE this gym. The equipment/machinery is legit old school which is freaking awesome. They have CHAINS. So badass! Compared to the resort style chain gym that I'm unfortunately currently a member of, I just feel way more in my element when I get to train at Shapely. The staff is super nice and other gym-goers usually keep to themselves and don't interrupt. The cost of a day pass and membership per month is a little pricey, but I get it. This gym is bad ass! I went there 2x before in the past for events and it was a great atmosphere. Last month I went for a free 2 week trial. I always went after 6pm and it was always pretty empty which is great! No waiting for weights, machines since they have A LOT of weights and machines. Some are even from when I was probably still in diapers but they ALL WORK! Very awesome! The cardio machines are old though, just as old as some of the equipment on the gym floor. For me not a problem since I only do bike and elliptical, but girlfriend loves doing the stairway machine and she complained it was too old(only reason why my girlfriend didn't want to join that gym). Big locker room. You can tell its an old gym by looking at the lockers. Not a problem for me since it was clean and that is all that matters! The whole 2 weeks that I was there trying out the gym no one ever ever bothered me for a weight, a bench, or small talk. Everyone was there for the same thing which was workout. I got no kids so for me this is not a problem but they don't have people to watch your kids or an area for kids. This a true gym. Leave the kids at home. LOTS of parking there. I think they share the parking with a bar/restaurant but still when I went there there was always parking. Oh they have great deals on groupon as well! So you just buy the groupon and go. No need for money down for staring plus monthly. BUT their prices are also really good! read more

In 2016, I was a member of the gym. I never renewed my membership because the equipment was always broken and never repaired on time. The showers always had an issue in the locker room. The gym is cheap because the owner doesn't care to repair the equipment. It has been two years, and I don't think much has changed since I left the gym. This was a 5 star gym at one point but time has passed them by, and they desperately need to adapt. The growing popularity of powerlifting means the 2 power racks and 1 deadlift platform can no longer meet user demand. There are a million hydraulic machines taking up valuable space in the middle of the gym that no one uses. They could easily be sold to free up space and buy new racks and equipment. Also, some new bars and better 45 plates [the current rubbery ones are a pain in the ass] and this gym could regain its greatness. There are also quite a few wierdos that spend 90% of their gym time staring into space or playing with their phones. But thats not the gym's fault. read more

The owner of this Gym BOB is plain disrespectful. Today 3/30/19 the gym was meant to close at 7pm on the dot at 7pm on the dot my boyfriend was finishing his last rep to leave the gym BOB proceeds to walk up to my boyfriends face and YELL "YO PUT THE FUCKING WEIGHT DOWN THE GYM IS FUCKING CLOSED" let's get things straight there were still about 5 other people in the gym we were getting ready to leave i was standing right next to him with my things in my hand. BOB proceeds to instigate a fight with my boyfriend saying "GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY GYM" my boyfriend proceed to tell him "BOB DO NOT YELL AT ME YOU COULD HAVE COME UP TO ME AND JUST SPOKE TO ME" BOB proceeds to yell and they being arguing back and forth BOB then says "GO AHEAD HIT ME HIT ME" to my boyfriend. That is something COWARD says to someone. He was clearly in a bad mood and took it out on us. I had to get in between the arguing and then BOB begins to YELL at me. The plan disrespect i just witnessed in this gym was disgusting. As a business owner you do not ever yell at your clients who have not done anything wrong to you. Know i'd understand if it was 7:10 or of we had been the only ones in the gym but the fact that there were still other people there was just a form of disrespect. We are PAYING CUSTOMERS BOB! Every piece of machinery that you could imagine for any body part is available at this gym. Also all the equipment on the floor is organized by body parts. If you are serious about bodybuilding/working out. Definitely check this place out. Only downside, I wish I would have signed up during their groupon special earlier this year. This is a review of my membership of 10 years ago. Bob the former owner is one crazy roid rager. The stories of him yelling add screaming are true. I left 2 25 lb plates on the pullover machine (My Bad) for warming up and he tapped me on the shoulder while i was on another machine and cursed at me, he wanted me to apologize for leaving the plates on the machine. I told him i didn't do it intentionally and that got him Mad enough to Threaten me with expulsion. I was doing 3 month memberships because i had heard he was a nut from people at other gyms, it took him a whole year to mess with me(was wondering after hearing the stories what took so long). I asked the guy at the front desk(who was in earshot) how much was left on my membership, he said 1 week. Flipped off Bob and walked never to return. He had a giant screen TV behind the counter and was spying on u even if u cant see him. He will get on the PA and point u out by ur shirt color or something else and shame u for not putting weights away. A couple of times he shamed me and they weren't my weights, just did it to shut him up. Hope new owner is an improvement. read more

This gym is great if you like tons and tons of different equipment! They have it all and then some more. It's very eclectic and retro, a blast from the 80's heyday of bodybuilding. In the early mornings they usually play modern pop/dance music and a little later in the day they play current and old school types heavy metal which is very motivating to help me work out my hardest. There is a majority of men there and the atmosphere is very focused, people who are there are very dedicated to their workouts. There are even some famous professionals among the members from time to time. Its a very energized and intense place to be. The prices are very fair. I'm happy to have found this gym after moving to this area. Its the best in the area read more
