Do not recommend this store. Store managers are liars and rip you off without feeling guilt. Things are double or more price than Homedepot.

Sure, it's more expensive than HD or Lowes. Yes, it's small. But I have always found every member of the staff to be helpful and knowledgeable, which is rare for ANY store, let alone a home improvement place. Their sales are really pretty good. This is where flyer-watching comes in handy. The Westlake HD does not have a garden department to speak of, so when I needed tomato cages and wire fencing, I came to the one place in Bethesda where I absolutely knew I could get what I needed. Privilege in this zip code is very much earned. Not handed on a platter or gained by getting around not paying taxes or milking the system. This is an excellent hardware store. They carry a wide variety of supplies, from screws to rain boots, and service is exceptional. I went there twice this weekend because I was working on a few projects. Both times, staff were friendly and helpful. They are knowledgeable and were able to give good advice on how to fix things with the correct products and techniques. They even spent time helping me find just the right size screws to match the sample one I brought from my antique table. This is worlds apart from big home stores like Loews or Hone Depot, and I'll gladly return here for the great service. I'd give them 5 stars if the prices were a little lower. This place is Mini-me Home Depot (but not at all surly). It's small but packed to the rafters with not only odd widgets, but a lot of the "can't do without" nuts and bolts, literally. And there's almost always someone standing by to assist you. That is soooo not Home Depot, where they seem to have mastered the art of "I'm busy doing something else, therefore I'm not going to make eye contact with you and therefore won't have to answer your inane question". This is a local hardware store with fantastic service that squashes all competition due to the service. I'll come here and pay more due the superior assistance. Yes, the store is over-the-top expensive. Yet, the customer experience is far superior to Home Depot or Lowes. This place trumps Hardware City - prices are about the same with better selection and service. If you don't know everything you need, a salesperson will walk you through the process of finding everything you need. If they don't know the answer, there is always someone in the store who does. Can you find this at Home Depot? Uhm......no freaking way! Strosniders doesn't have everything because the store is small, but they will offer to order if an item is not in-stock. They even sharpened my hunting knife without a service charge. Little things like this keep me a loyal customer. No brainer - go here. I went here on a Sunday at 5:35, knowing they closed at 6. Knowing I only had 25 minutes, I went in knowing exactly what I needed and that I needed to be quick. However, when I showed up many of the staff members were in the process of moving the items that had been outside of the store (grills, planters, etc) into the store. It was annoying enough having to dodge all the movement of these bulky items on the sidewalk to get in the store, but then I entered the store and realized that they were stashing all of these items in the aisles of the store. There were entire aisles that were completely inaccessible due to large seed displays, grills, and other various items that had been shoved into them. I understand staff members wanting to expedite the closing process, but if your store is open until 6, all of your merchandise should be available to your customers without having to navigate an obstacle course. People who are coming in at the last minute probably know they have limited time and the situation here just needlessly slows them down. Example: I was going in for a bird feeder. The display was blocked by a grill and when I asked a staff member how to get to the bird feeders I was greeted with a cranky reply of "yeah, you're gonna have to go around that shelving unit and loop back in". Thanks. What I generally viewed as a great store with extremely knowledgable and helpful staff has now been marred with this inconsiderate store practice. tl;dr... They clog up all the aisles half an hour before closing with their merchandise from outside so you can't actually get down aisles to the merchandise inside. read more

I hate to write this review, but it must be done. I've been a HUGE fan of Strosnider's over the years, and like to support this smaller chain over big box stores. I've generally received excellent customer service here. HOWEVER, I'm moving, and painting, and went in on a Friday to buy paint samples. I was quoted a price of $30/gallon to get the paint that I needed. When I went in to purchase the paint three days later, the paint was not $30, but $45.99 per gallon -- fully $16 per gallon more, and with the 6 gallons I purchased, the bill ended up being almost $100 more than I expected. As the paint was already mixed, and I discovered this discrepancy after the paint had been rung up, there was nothing that could be done. I am extremely disappointed by the paint department, which lied to me about the price, and am sad to say that Strosnider's Bethesda has lost a loyal customer. read more

I went there yesterday and today for paint supplies. First day: I talk to a delightful and helpful employee in the paint department. Then, I get to the cash register and I am treated in a very unfriendly, somewhat contemptuous way. I walk away thinking "this person probably had a bad day." Today, I go back for more supplies. Another employee in the paint department treats me in a very unfriendly, borderline rude way. I get to the cash register, (not the same as yesterday). I am again treated in a rude and contemptuous way. I'll spare you the details of the exchanges and you need not trust my objectivity. To the store manager who may be reading this: 1) I very rarely write reviews. I do so only when very pleased or very displeased. 2) Many of your store employees are very friendly and helpful. 3) Three instances of bad treatment in two visits may be indicative of a real problem. read more

Last time I was there, one of the staff members (they're too good to call them "sales clerks") spent almost ten minutes with me finding the exact bolt for me. I was treated politely every minute, with him narrowing in on exactly what I needed and what would work, and explaining the differences in the bolts to make sure that I got the correct one. ... Then he put the bolt into a little brown bag and marked it with the cost: 89 cents. That is typical of the service I've experienced at Strosnider's since 1982 when I first moved to Bethesda. ... Of course, before I left the store with my 89 cent bolt, I spent another $300 that I'd not planned to spend, on some household stuff that I just "had" to have. ... And even with those purchases I got some surprise help. I was purchasing window fans. One of the staff offered to help me carry my purchases to the front and asked why I was getting two different kinds of fans. I said, "Because you have only two of the kind I want." ... He said, "We have more of what you want right up here. How many do you want?" read more

Always been really helpful and had what I needed (I don't go there for things I have assumed they won't have). This past weekend I went there for engine oil. They had it while home depot didn't. They always have the useful basics. They are everything one wants from a neighborhood hardware store. They are generally more helpful than home depot/ lowe's. Absolutely the best store, great for it's variety, and convenience. When I worked at Crate and Barrel nearby, if we didn't have it, I sent my customers to Strosniders. It's got far more character than the big box stores. If you're in the area and you need something, they probably have it at Strosniders. The variety is limited, and the prices a little higher than "HD", but I believe in supporting the local merchants and keeping local neighborhood character. No, it isn't the cheapest, but hiring competent staff and stocking harder to find items has its price. Recently had keys cut at both HD and Strosneider's. Small, confusing, and packed with stuff, but that's more than offset by the fact that the staff is inordinately helpful, somehow know where in the 50-something aisles (they're short-it's not that big, I swear!) every single thing is. They have a surprising amount of stuff, it's just scattered in a somewhat haphazard way around the store. The good news about that is in the 4 seconds it takes you to realize you're lost, one of the staff is already trying to help you figure out where to go. There's very little they don't have, and I shop here nearly exclusively for all my hardware stuff. The place can't be bigger than a big Starbucks, but they somehow manage to stock Crock Pots, canning jars, lawn furniture, a full paint department, hand warmers, and birdhouses in between all the 'real' hardware stuff. read more

If you want good service and advice on how to do home projects, go to Strosniders. This is so much better than any Home Depot or other big box hardware/home store. The staff is friendly and accessible and they're are lots of them -- seems like one per aisle. I've been buying all my paint there for a new house and they have color consultants and people who really know how to help you make choices and buy what you need. Its also very easy to return items that you end up not using or needing. I've never been to the Silver Spring location but if its anything like the one in Bethesda, I'm sure its good. read more

New to a home in Bethesda you can only imagine the number of items I needed (or is it wanted?). My new neighbor suggested Strosniders Hardware and I am just thrilled. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the service! I was approached three times in different aisles asking if I needed any advice or direction - how great is that? I had my list with me and I walked out complete and then some! I needed to match a Duron semi gloss paint in our laundry room. It was a hard to match cream color and I was concerned that we could not get a good match. I took a small piece of drywall with the paint to the Paint Department at Strosniders last night. A good looking baldish man spent about 15 minutes matching the paint. I just put the paint on the wall and you cannot tell the difference between the 15 year old paint and the paint from Strosniders. If you are a professional painter or a DIY painter (like me), you know how hard it is to get an exact match. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Paint Department at Strosniders in Bethesda. An absolute gem. A truly old-fashioned hardware store, where the employees really know their stuff, and really know where stuff is. They are friendly, and nice, and really knowledgeable. They have an awesome selection of Weber grills. Love that. Plus - they sell Stihl. Not everybody can - Stihl only lets certain places sell their products, because they insist on a high-quality, expert staff. You'll never find Stihl at the big-box stores. Plus - they have a full selection of Yeti coolers and all the accessories. Man, Yeti is sold out everywhere - but Strosnider's has 'em. Really. From the Roadie 20 to the 110, from the Ice to the Ramblers to the Colsters. In stock. Ready to go. One more thing - they sell wood. Not a lot, but they have 2X4s, 1X12s, everything a homeowner would need. And here's the thing - it's straight. No twisted, bacon-like pieces...their wood is straight as an arrow. I have been a customer for many years. I find most of the employees to be helpful and pleasant. However the manager Chuck, is an unpleasant, not helpful person. When I requested to see a manager, I heard an employee call him on the hone to ask him to come to the front desk, and he refused to come until I said I would wait. He clearly didn't want to be bothered to discuss an issue in the store. There are plenty of other hardware stores in the area who don't have CHUCK as a manager. read more

Love this store because of the people who work there. Great service, attentive staff, not in your face, but always there to answer questions. Great quality selections, e.g., Christmas decorations - quality is the word here. Not cheap, poorly made products. Good stuff. Price is good for most but some things are pricier than other stores. But then you get what you pay for. I did not give 5 stars only because some things are over-priced. But I am a big fan. Great product selection, helpful and honest service/recommendations. But I'm a girl that digs a hardware store and my husband being the handyman he is, has taught me what is good and what is not. This place is great. They leave you to find what you need but will help or find out what will best help you vs what they can best sell to you. I had keys made in a snap, found the mother of all plungers (there are teenage boys in my house, need I say more) and the filtered shower head I've been looking for to save my hair color from disaster. Preparing for a natural disaster? DON'T SHOP HERE. I was here last Tuesday to look at sump systems in advance of Hurricane Florence. The clerk was very helpful, even though the store was about to close for the night. I wasn't sure whether the pump he suggested would fit in our space, so I told him that I should go home, measure the space, and come back the next day. Only then did I realize that I see a sign that would have made me walk out right away, warning that there were absolutely no refunds on storm-related items. WTF? If the storm fizzles (as it did), there is no reason for a store to refuse to refund items that are unused. I would have grumbled at being charged a restocking fee, but to be non-returnable at all? That's just sleazy. The sign wasn't even visible until I pulled a discharge hose of the bottommost shelf--it would have been extremely easy to miss. Would the cashier have warned me at checkout? Hopefully, so I would have had rime to cancel the sale before it happened. Would it have been printed on the receipt? If so, that's too late, because the stuff would already be non-returnable. I'd have reported it to my credit card company. There's absolutely no way that I'll shop here again for anything, storm-related or not. read more

You will be in and out if you know exactly what you want because you will find it within minutes with some help. It is slightly pricey and unlike one of the chains like Home Depot they don't have a garden department. They do carry gardening tools pots and soils though just not the plans. Now that there is a Home Depot in Bethesda I do sometimes succumb to lazyness, but I never receive the kind of service and advice that I get at Strosniders. Go over towards the mall if you can afford to wander around a 125,000 square foot store for 30 minutes and ask 5 employees who will tell you something you've previously bought there doesn't exist. Go to Strosnider's if you want to spend 5 minutes in the store and be steered straight to what you need. If you spot the irony here, the lazyness of going to Home Depot ends up costing you. If you think Strosnider's is irrelevant, I wish you luck opening your house or apartment door with the keys from Home Depot that never work. read more
