Yes, it's a lovely piece of Michigan land. And yes, the people were friendly. However, when we asked questions of the "volunteers", the response we got was almost identical from each one; clone-like. It felt scripted. During a lengthy conversation with one volunteer, we discovered that the sanctuary was the vision of their "spiritual leader/teacher" and that the volunteers were all members of the spiritual group. We would never have driven all the way out to Manchester from the east side if we had known this property was run by a cult, albeit a nice one (or so it seemed). The grankids were restless and bored in a very short time. We could have had just as nice of a time at the State Park here.

As a member of the community, I have seen first hand how we ignore these issues and sometimes shamefully deny that they exist. Abuse is a problem in our community as it is in any community. However in our community we don't talk about this out of fear. We are after all one of the "model minority" communities. The beauty of MAIFS is that it is an organization that makes it acceptable to discuss and address the many issues that we have in our families. I have first hand experienced physical and emotional abuse. I have seen the reaction of others in this situation to quietly accept this abuse and sometimes become abusers themselves. The dynamic of power and control is a very complex one. I say this all with a belief in the power of redemption. However, those who are causing harm must first acknowledge their behavior and accept therapy, and those who are being harmed must stand up and must show some courage. I see this very rarely in our community. So in my opinion, there is great value in an organization like MAIFS. To me, though, where MAIFS is lacking is not in purpose but in implementation and in thinking outside-the-box in programmatic efforts. In particular, it seems difficult to get involved with MAIFS and it seems difficult for other community agencies to partner with MAIFS on long term initiatives. I do think some of this may be because MAIFS is an organization run by volunteers with limited financing and limited involvement of younger, progressive members. However, I have also led volunteer organizations and made it a point to reach out to all who showed an interest (regardless of age or class). Everything is not based on money as money will not always be there. Speaking of financing, tonight there is a major fundraising event for MAIFS. I wish the organization success with that and hope that the organization continues to develop further to serve our community.
