I had no clue about "Keith from Walgreens", but I recently went to the Recycle Dropoff center and was greeted by the friendliest person I've ever met. I literally told three people about how nice the man there was and later found out it was Keith, an Ypsi legend. I was quickly able to drop off the styrofoam that I had for $3, not bad price wise. Here's the thing about #PandemicLife ...there are just so many boxes! Sure, I've been trying to steer away from Amazon. But I'm still a mere mortal with material needs. All the Amazon purchases arrive in boxes. The Target purchases arrive in boxes. Even the Kroger groceries by mail arrive in boxes. And naturally, the Zingerman's Mail Order treats come in boxes too. On top of all that, we've also been trying to set up and furnish a new house. So the furniture we've been buying... it all comes in boxes. Lots of very very big boxes. Sometimes with big and bulky styrofoam too. Sure, Ann Arbor has a great curb side recycling program, but only so many boxes can fit into one of those receptacles. I'm not sure how long it would take to get rid of all our cardboard by sliding one or two into our usually very full weekly curbside pick up. Now, for just three bucks, Recycle Ann Arbor's Drop Off Station will take a minivan stuffed to the gills with cardboard and styrofoam. Three dollars! About the price of a slice of pizza. It's not only a bargain, it's a blessing. The Drop Off Station is convenient to access. There are plenty of people around to help point you where to go. They take all kinds of stuff, which is well detailed on their website, along with the prices which vary by items and quantity. In a few minutes, I went from being buried in boxes to being gloriously box free! At least for the moment. There are still a few more rooms to furnish, I have monthly deliveries scheduled from Zingerman's Mail Order after the Spring Sale, and there will be additional Target shipments arriving for the foreseeable future. But when the backlog of boxes becomes burdensome, I know just the place the bring 'em. read more

Rather than pay for trash pickup service, I take everything here myself. With all the shredding & composting, and recycling everything possible, it takes our household two months or more to fill a 30 gallon trash bag. When the trash bag is full, I take everything to the drop-off station. Wear your "mud shoes." And maybe bring your work gloves. Pay attention to the days and hours. Certain items (bags of trash, appliances, tires, mattresses, propane tanks) require a fee, so declare all your items and the person will tell you the total. There is an area for each type of recyclable item. If you know what you're doing, it's self serve. If you need help, there are usually a few volunteers to answer questions. Read the signs carefully, because THEY MIGHT MAKE CHANGES IN WHAT THEY'LL TAKE. For example, they'll no longer accept most batteries, because most U.S.-made alkaline batteries no longer contain mercury. It feels odd throwing a battery into a trash basket after decades of saving them, and even picking them up from parking lots. If you go just to recycle, you pay $3 at the guard house and then go in the barn where you can recycle just about everything. They have separate bins for different types of paper (e.g., glossy magazines, newspapers, etc.). If your paper isn't separated, they have a mixed paper bin. I live nearby and don't have service at my house, so I bring my recycling and trash here. If you're good about recycling (everything you can) and sort it all before you get here, you'll pay $3 to get in and $3 for a bag of trash... not bad! I love that this place is here and accepts so much stuff (even old computers and motor oil)! Check the site for specifics, since some things do have an extra fee. Just a quick update/addendum after a second trip: apparently compost and trash are charged but recyclable items (including styrofoam FYI) are free. So if you're sorting garbage to take over there make sure you make the a separate bag/pile for that stuff so you don't get charged since it's by cubic yard and that stuff can take up a lot of space. I didn't realize styrofoam was accepted in the recycling but it was mixed in with my bags so I had a lot of sorting to do when I got there. Made the trip more difficult than it needed to be. read more

AAUW Used Book Sale volunteers made many trips to the Drop-Off Station this summer to drop off hard cover books that had been donated but weren't suitable for selling. We sent several cars and vans loaded with books to the Drop-Off Station after each of our three weekly sorting sessions, and Station employees were incredibly helpful. They anticipated our arrivals and often had extra of those huge cardboard containers waiting and ready for us to fill. They placed the containers where we could easily reach them, and when they could, they and their volunteers helped us unload our cars and vans. Their cheerful and helpful attitudes made our work ever so much easier, and we greatly appreciate it. We will sing your praises whenever we can, and look forward to working with you again next year.
