My daughter started dancing at 3 years old at this studio. It's been 9 years since she started. She has grown into a beautiful dancer that is all thanks to the wonderful teachers. My daughter considers this her home and is so comfortable there. She is thriving and happy. My daughters have been dancing at Studio L since they were 3 years old. One is now 12 and the other 10. They both love dancing and consider the studio their second home. I have never really purchased anything for the teachers because of my financial situation and Kelley and Danielle have been nothing but very accommodating and understanding! The teachers are very good! They always promote not only for the children to be awesome dancers but well-rounded, kind-hearted and disciplined students. They bring in as much guest dancers as they can to expose the kids to different styles of teaching and dance! I would definitely recommend this studio! read more

Beware of this dance studio. It is not the dance studio that is was many many years ago. If you want your child to do well at this studio you have to do nice things for the staff. If you do not your child will not be looked at twice. The studio does not actually teach how to dance it just teaches dances for recitals and competitions. The teachers are told who to put in dances and where to put the dancers. Guest teachers who come to the studio never stay long because the owner selects the same dancers over and over for dances and the teachers refuse to stay with these conditions. This is not a place for kids to learn. My daughter was never taught how to do basic ballet here. The teachers only paid attention to a girl who had parents who would buy food and clothes for the teachers. Parents with money are treated very well because they can do nice things for the teachers. If you want to bring your kids here look at other places and do not be fooled because this is a big studio. I am sorry I wasted my child's time at this place. Studio L is a place where not only dancers come together, but families. It is the best place for dance instruction in Hoboken. Children who attend walk in with dreams to dance and walk out trained, skilled, competitive team dancers. There are a variety of ways to get involved - from once a week ballet for little ones to the competition team that travels around the world. This review is based just on the GLEE Musical Theatre (under age 10 category) class in Waldwick, not any of the dance classes. From watching the recital, the dancing seemed like what you would get at any other dance studio. The specialized Larkin dancers were amazing though. Anyway, my daughter enrolled in the Glee class back in September for 1.5hours every Monday. I didn't expect her to become a Broadway performer (not even off broadway), she was just interested in improving her Musical Theatre skills. The brochure stated the class was a triple threat: Singing, Acting, and Dancing. It also said there would be a Holiday Showcase and a Video Production. I noticed throughout the year that my daughter wasn't learning any songs or dance steps (not even humming a catchy tune). When I asked her about it, she said, "We don't really do any of that". I asked in January about the Holiday Showcase and was told that it was just for the staff, though my daughter didn't remember any such event. There was 1 video shoot supposedly over spring break when we were away, but I never received a video production, nor heard any information on what was produced. I didn't have high hopes for the recital in May, as my daughter said they were only doing 1 "original" song which consisted of 8 rhyming lines. The recital performance consisted of about 12 students standing on risers. There was no consistency in their appearance. I'm not saying they should have worn costumes, but maybe all in the same color. There was no stage presence whatsoever. The performance was flat and awkward, they all just stood there, not even a sway. The song was mediocre at best. I could not believe that after 8 months of classes, that was the highlight. I found out that I was not the only one from the class that felt this way. My daughter's elementary school does a musical every year taught by moms, which requires 8 weeks of hourly rehearsals. They do a wonderful job which proves that a professional school should have done and can do so much more than what those children were "taught". I called and spoke to Kelly regarding my disappointment and she was very defensive. In the end even suggesting that I would be a terrible person with no life, for writing a review. My goal in this review is to hopefully save one family who may be considering enrolling their child. I wish a review had been available before I made that mistake. read more

In response to the review posted on March 21, 2016 by C.H.: As a respectful parent with a respectful daughter (we are in the majority at our studio), I found the review not only insulting, but completely unfair. I'm sorry you experienced less than complimentary behavior from a few people, but with a studio as large as ours with over 150 students and an equal amount of parents, it's unfair to make blanket statements about us as a whole. I have also been attending competitions for several years and have encountered certain behaviors, which I have found unacceptable, but would never publicly shame children. They are children, they are not perfect, much like adults who are also imperfect. If you felt that strongly, an email to the owner addressing your concerns would have been more appropriate. On more than one occasion, I witnessed my daughter, as well as several other teammates, compliment other dancers and wish them good luck. I personally gave compliments to several dancers on their dances and costumes. We also have "Prop Dads" in our studio who have received awards and various compliments at other competitions for their contributions to and support of other studios. These are not the actions of "incredibly rude parents" or of a "condescending attitude towards others." read more

My kids used to love dance until we started Studio L. The owners overbooked my 6 year old's class. There are over 25 kids in the class (I really can't even keep track). The studio called the parents to see if they would switch to another day but only 2 kids were able to. You would think the studio would have divided the class up into 2 classes since they didn't close the class out like they said they would. My child complains every week that she doesn't want to go back because she isn't learning anything. Now that the recital is coming up they are working on their routine. But the teachers are only focusing on the two company dancers who were put in their class (why I don't know). When someone called and asked why the other students were learning anything the owner's response was "the 6 year olds just aren't getting it." Did it ever occur to them that the kids aren't getting it because there are too many kids in the class? Or because all they do is "freeze dance" games? Or maybe because the school has a party for every holiday...who needs a party when you are only in class once a week? My kid doesn't need to be given candy in their dance class when they are about to go home and eat dinner. We are paying for dance class. Now I am angry that two older girls are in their dance routine up-staging all 26 of the kids who were excited to take this class. As a parent we all know going to after school activities is hard enough without having our kids cry that they don't want to go. I am sorry to say that no one is excited for the recital like we hoped they would be and they were other years when they took dance at another school (which we only left do to scheduling). On another note, the studio's hand is always out asking for money. It may be for a good cause but every other week it is something. Knowing what I know about the studio I even question if the money even goes to charity. I hope my kids aren't put in costunes for their recital that will make me and my husband cringe. My kids are 5 and 6 years old, from what I see when sitting in the waiting area of other kids who have been in the school for years the studio is going to be dressing them up like mini prostitutes. STUDIO L is the worst. I regret sending my kids there. The only positive is that the season ends earlier than most schools...before May 1st. Why so early? So they can start a "pre-summer" session probably so they can take more money from unsuspecting families who haven't had the misfortune of being there all year. read more

My daughter has been dancing at Studio L for 5 years. She danced in the recreational program (once a week classes) for two years before joining the company of which she's been a member for the past three years. She has also participated in the studio's intensive elite program over the summer which has enabled her to develop significantly as a dancer. One of the highlights of being at Studio L for my daughter has been the acro program. During her time dancing at Studio L, my daughter has learned a lot about various genres of dance and formed many wonderful and lasting friendships. read more

Almost made a mistake of bringing my daughter to a nearby dance studio (Tribe) who attempts to compete with Studio L, but after actually looking into both and bringing my daughter to both, there just really wasn't a comparison. Studio L goes way beyond a dance experience for my daughter but it is huge and has great facilities and space and is an overall adorable place for kids and teens! This is my daughter's second year dancing at Studio L. Since coming to Studio L she has improved in leaps and bounds. The dancers in the competition program are trained and prepared in every style of dance. The dancers in the recreational program have the option of taking any style and as much as they may choose to take. There is a place for every age and every level. The teachers and the owner genuinely care about every student and every students' happiness. The facility is beautiful and well kept with spacious studios and now is even expanding with a new acro facility, allowing the studio to add even more class options. There is no other studio in the area that compares to Studio L. It is one of a kind and where we love and could not be happier. read more

This review is more about the students and parents of Studio L. I will start by saying they are amazing dancers and their dedication to dance surely shows on stage. With that being said, my daughter's dance studio competed against them this weekend and the dancers could benefit from etiquette classes as well as some lessons in common courtesy in addition to their dance instruction. In all the years of attending dance competitions, we have never encountered such incredibly rude dancers AND parents. They have absolutely NO common courtesy at all. I personally overheard numerous students, parents and/or teachers many times throughout the weekend making derogatory remarks about the other studios dancers and dances. On many occasions throughout the weekend, their students would push past us as we were waiting until a dance was finished on stage before entering the audience (a common courtesy rule that is usually followed during a competition) without even bothering to say excuse me. In the dressing rooms, the parents were horribly rude and had no problem taking over tables that another studio had their personal items already on. It's a shame that their total disregard as well as rude and condescending attitude towards others overshadows their talent. I know without a shadow of a doubt that our studio owner would NEVER allow our children to be so incredibly disrespectful and I as a parent, wouldn't allow it either. So shame on their studio and more importantly, their parents for allowing such poor behavior and sportsmanship. read more
