First let me state that I usually don't leave 1-star reviews, in fact of all the reviews I've left on Yelp I've only given three total 1-star reviews. It takes a lot for me to give a bad review as I am a big believer in supporting small businesses. I wanted to try Studio One Eleven because of all the 5-star reviews I saw on Yelp. I was really looking forward to seeing what all the hype was about. I showed up today at 10:15 am (blocked out a couple hours from work) and Raquel was with another customer, turns out I made an appointment for the wrong day. The first red flag came up with how rude she was to me when I thought it was a tech error with the booking system, her response verbatim was "well obviously it was your user error because the system says the appointment is for next week." I was pretty turned off at that point, but luckily she had a customer who eased the awkwardness and called out it happened to him last week. She made things a little better by offering me a 7:15pm spot if I wanted it. Since I am in desperate need of a haircut I took it, but I normally would've just passed and found another spot to try, because I think it's VERY important to have good rapport with your stylist...you're in a chair for 30+ min, it will be awkward to have someone you think is rude touching your hair and giving them control of your appearance. I came back at 7:00pm for my appointment and the building door has a note instructing customers to call their stylist to let them in the building due to COVID protocols. I call Raquel and it goes straight to voicemail. I call her again because maybe it was a connection error and same thing. I give it a couple of min and email her thinking she might be with a customer and can't get to her phone. It is now 7:10pm and I'm a little worried that maybe she forgot. I call her one last time to see if I can get through, NOTHING straight to voicemail. I start walking to my car and she texts me "with a customer, text me". As I begin texting her back she calls me and says in probably one of the rudest tones I've heard in a while "hey stop blowing up my phone I'm with a customer. Don't you know I cut hair for a living and can't pick up when I'm taking care of someone?". As a new customer I just couldn't believe someone would be so rude to not even have the decency or common sense to simply politely ask me to wait and let me know that she'll be out shortly to open the front door. Customer service is so important and it seems to be a lost art for Raquel and Studio One Eleven. I can't comment on the skill she may have as a stylist, but I certainly wouldn't trust someone cutting my hair with her rude attitude and approach to communication with her customers....after all with a rocky start I wouldn't trust people who don't like me with sharp objects near my face. Raquel, if you are reading this, I hope you were just having a bad day and it's not a reflection of who you are as a professional. Your communication and ability to empathize with customers is poor at best. I hope this review doesn't stunt your business in any way, but shines a light on how you treat people as you are in a services business. Anyone considering this hair salon should ask themselves how much they value customer service and good conversation with their hair stylist...I certainly do and wouldn't want to sit in a chair for 30+ min talking to someone who clearly has no time for me or cares about what I think. Response to comment below: as you can see from the owner's response the "bs is not my jam" personality trait gives her the audacity to be rude. I apologize for the following: 1) being early to an appointment, what an inconvenience 2) Not knowing how to get into a building or where to go for being a first time customer 3) Being SOOO inconsiderate and self centered that I'd give someone who was rude to me from the jump a 2nd chance because although she was rude she did make an effort to make it right, so why nit give someone the benefit of the doubt, guess that's a self-centered trait. I guess in Raquel's eyes I should thank her for allowing me to give her my business. Like I said in my OG review. Anyone who values someone with an actual sense for service who doesn't come off self entitled should reconsider going to this shop. But give it a try hopefully you don't have the same experience as me. read more

My boyfriend's hair had been growing out and after a few not-so-great experiences with his barber, we both decided it was time for him to visit an actual hair stylist. We were able to make an appointment with Raquel for the weekend, which was awesome! She is so friendly, listens to all your ideas, questions, & concerns, and really seems to know her stuff. In no time, the mop on top of the bf's head was transformed into a beautifully sculpted masterpiece. Raquel even helped with suggestions on how to style his hair and what kinds of products to use. She's awesome, hilarious, and full of energy. We'll be back in another three months or so for a trim. read more

A short story. I was a wildland fire fighter for eight years. One of these years, I joined the Blue Ridge Hotshots in Arizona. This was the crew attached to the 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots who perished in 2013. I have to mention that because one practice that is done on a shot crew is growing a beard that represents a brotherhood during a given season and my first time growing one. It embodies a sense of trusting your life into the hands of a crew. It represents the hard hours of fighting fire with men you grow to love and respect there after. I grew one of the most rugged beards as many we practice long before it became hip to pop culture. I am a male in my 20s and just went to Studio One Eleven last week. Raquel is great. I've spent the past two years looking for a good hair stylist in Westwood to schedule regular appointments with, and I've found her. What sets Raquel apart from the rest is not her friendliness and down-to-earth personality (though these are definitely perks), but rather her attention to detail. Specifically, she goes to great lengths (pun intended) to make sure that you get the hair cut you are looking for. I've noticed that it's typical for stylists to periodically ask "Is this the right length?" Etc. Raquel, however, really makes sure, throughout the entire process, that you're getting the cut you want. She asks for feedback, and rather than a yes-or-no "Long enough?" she strategizes with you about your look. Will definitely return. So I have gone to Raquel for years while she was working at Floyd's 99, and I had no second thoughts about following her to her new digs at studio one eleven. Before Raquel I had bounced around to lots of different stylists, sometimes paying up to 50 bucks for a haircut, but I have never found someone with such a great combination of skill, personality and reasonable price until I found Raquel. Probably the longest review I'll ever write for anything, but I feel like Raquel's work really deserves it. There's more energy in this than any of the essays I bullshitted last quarter. One of the best things about getting a haircut here is how well she tailors the cut to me specifically and with such consistency every visit. I attend school here in LA but I live way up north, so when I get a haircut here, it can be anywhere from 2-6 months since the last time I'd seen Raquel. The first time I got a haircut here, I didn't really know what I wanted. I just asked Raquel to give me something pretty short but anything else she thought would be fitting, she was free to do. It turned out amazing and everything I'd hoped for. I've always anticipated my haircuts elsewhere to deviate a little with each successive visit. Sometimes I'll like a cut more, sometimes less, a sad reality I think we can all relate to. So when I had my second appoint with Raquel, maybe 5 months later, I didn't expect to get the exact same perfect haircut as last time. I crossed my fingers and just gave the same minimal direction--something nice and short with her freedom to take the reigns from there. Yet she managed to reproduce the exact same, flattering haircut. Of my 4 or so cuts with Raquel since, I've gotten this near exact, perfect haircut each time. On that second visit, there's no way she could remember the haircut she gave to some random guy 5 months ago. Particularly with that client being some generic Asian dude, considering the traffic of customers she must get from UCLA. What this really showed me is the attention to detail she's really giving me. Essentially all I asked her for was something short and flattering, really putting trust in her hands. And Raquel really works to honor and do just that. She spots and thinks through all the little snips and buzzes that'll compliment not only my kind of hair and my head shape but even my general clothing style and personality. When I get a haircut here, it doesn't just feel like some separate component added to my persona. It feels like Raquel is helping me to complete and highlight the way I want to see myself and the way I hope others do too. This all probably sounds quite over dramatic, but my haircuts had always been something I'd been pretty self-conscious and unhappy about when I was a younger. I fear I am growing bald. It is not that bad, but I can tell my hair is thinning, and there is noticeably (to me, anyway) less hair on my crown. Yes, that means the days of styling my hair are numbered; so, I take my hair seriously. Raquel is like that older cousin when I was a freshman in high school who knew all the cool seniors and let me hang out with them. Think Freaks & Geeks meets Dazed & Confused meets Edward Scissorhands. Actually, she is more like the hair stylist version of Iron Chef. At times, it might seem like I go in and say, "today's secret hair style is, monkfish," and she will pull out the most bad-ass hair cut that carries the essence of what I asked for. I once asked for a 'Christiano Ronaldo but suitable for the work place." I later found out that the girl I started dating a few days later was really turned on by my hair style (Ok, ordering in the native language at an ethnic restaurant might also have had something to do with it). What can I say, why live vicariously through other people when a few minutes in Raquel's chair will turn me into whatever or whomever I want myself? Taking one second aside to not talk about how Raquel makes ME feel, as my cousin (who also is her client) would say, "She's good people."
