For just $25/session (yes- $25!!) Dan offers semi-personal training sessions basically whenever you want. I've been trained by Dan 4 times in the past few weeks & here's why I"ll continue to be a regular customer: - Challenging workouts: Thanks (or maybe no thanks) to Dan I've been sore for the first time in a few years. While I incorporate a lot of shred415 and spinning into my fitness routine, I realize I've been missing necessary weight training. - Flexibility: Between 3 small children and a busy job I can hardly keep my schedule straight. I can't commit to a specific time each week, but Dan is happy to train me whenever with just a 1/2 hour notice (although I do try to give him more than that). I've been there in the morning, mid afternoon and evening...and he's been ready each time with a challenging workout. - Focus on form: I'm pretty sure I do half the moves wrong when I take classes, but the instructors are so busy that they rarely take the time to correct my form. Dan spends time on every move to make sure my form is correct. In my 4 times at his gym I've been by myself or with 1 other person so he's able to spend time correcting form. - Nice guy: A challenging workout can suck if you don't have any distractions. However, Dan is fun to chat/gossip with so the hours I've spent with him go relatively fast. Unfortunately, he has the ability to chat and count at the same time so the chit chat doesn't mean I can any easier workouts. I paid for 12 workouts upfront so will be spending lots more time with Dan in the near future and recommend to anyone else looking for a challenging, affordable and/or flexible personal trainer.

This is all due to the dynamic combination of cardio and weight training by the amazing trainers at DF. Dan Deitch, the owner, is not only an amazing trainer, but a really great guy who will do anything to accommodate your schedule. The trainers are funny and engaging, and give great workouts...never the same one twice! It is hands down the best fitness facility I have ever been affiliated with, and I have done it all. $100 per hour personal trainers, fancy fitness studios...they all pale in comparison to the workout I get and the fun I have at Definition Fitness. At $25 per hour it is also the best deal in town. Not only are the trainers great, but the clientele is as well. Sometimes it will just be you and a trainer one on one, but sometimes the trainer might be working out one or two other people as well. As people go in around the same time each week, you get to know the other people you train with and I have made some wonderful new friends! I can't say enough positive things about Dan and Definition Fitness. Dan will let you try the first workout free and I urge you to do it. You'll be hooked. I know I am!

I appreciate her teaching style, combining both cardio, weights, toning, stretch, and humor (bec working out can't be all that serious!) -an all around total body workout. Prior to my first lesson, I had never done Yoga before. I was waking up every night from a sore lower back, unable to continue playing basketball each weekend & struggling to keep up with my two-year old. Through Mariana's tutelage and commitment, now 6 months later, I find myself breezing through physical activities that used to be a challenge and never dealing with recurring back problems. The only downfall is that there is only air conditioning in the yoga room, so I often found myself skipping kickboxing classes when the temperature crept towards the 80's and 90's, because I have no wish to faint during an exercise class. You can park in the back or on the street. Your first class is always free. I tried a yoga class and then took advantage of the October special - $25 for a week of unlimited classes. I tried kickboxing, hot yoga, warm yoga, and I brought my husband and daughter in for a trial class as well. Bottled water and snacks are offered for a voluntary donation. Free small towels, use of mats & props, and free hot tea as you leave. Lexi Wynn yoga bags, yoga accessories and jewelry by local artists are also for sale. I've been in a rut at my gym so I checked out Blue Sky to see if mixing things up might get me motivated again. I tried & loved the kickboxing class because you are actually kicking and punching a bag. There is nothing as satisfying as finally getting to your workout and finding that your jab/uppercut has some oomph to it! Angie, the owner, teaches both kickboxing and yoga, and I've appreciated the sense of community she is trying to build both by being a resident of L'ville and business owner but also in taking the time to get to know her clients (by name) and connecting clients to the community. This month she was taking donations of gently used and new bras to donate to The Haven. Next month will be donations of non-perishable food items for the food banks (and free Friday Happy Hour yoga with a food donation!). She also offers some fusion classes, and family classes that would be great for parents with younger children. Prices are very competitive. And, a little secret. You can share a multi-class pass with family members! I actually had no intention of sharing my pass with my daughter and husband, but what a deal! My only fear? I went to Niyama on week nights almost 4 days a week this past summer when I was living in the suburbs. Almost all of the teachers I had on week nights were amazing, kind, patient and everything a good yoga teacher should be. The studio is clean, inexpensive (especially if you're a student) and relaxing. If my rating were based on the weeknight classes only, my rating would be much higher. I made the mistake, however, of attending a few of Mac's classes on the weekends. Mac owns the studio- and therefore, I thought it would be a great experience since I loved the studio so. How wrong I was. Upon the first class I attended Mac made it a point to humiliate a student in class because he wasn't doing a backbend correctly. I decided to write it off as a fluke and attended her class again the following weekend. I realized that it was not a fluke. Mac was obnoxiously phony throughout the entire class and brought a condescending teaching style, constantly showering her students with demeaning comments instead of the uplifting inspirational attitude that you so often find in yoga. The final time I visited Niyama, I made the mistake of not checking the schedule beforehand and Mac was unfortunately teaching. During a posture that I find very difficult, Mac came up to me and said (loud enough for everyone to hear) that I should be in the back of the room because I clearly didn't know what I was doing. When I said that there was no room, she rolled her eyes and snapped "There's plenty of room!" I was furious and humiliated! Though I loved so many of the other teachers I refused to go back after that and support a studio owned by a person like this. When I decide to go to yoga I expect a comforting and uplifting experience led by teachers who foster a sense of support and community. When I told my story to a few other students I realized I was not alone in my sentiments. Others told me of similar situations they had either experienced or witnessed. Mac has no business owning a yoga studio and treating her students this way. If you do decide to attend Niyama- opt for a class taught by any of the other teachers, unless you want to leave feeling badly about yourself and your practice.
