Stumpy's comes highly recommended! Glenn was very responsive and cooperative with the different things we wanted to have done to the trees around our house. As a thank you for doing business for him; he and a crew came and picked up our branches from yard work we were doing, which was a lot since the previous owners left the house a complete mess, for free. Glenn is very friendly and not your typical employer. While we were having our stumps ground down, Glenn was not only there to supervise, but he also took over the grinder and helped his employees out. Also, he would come out to the job site every time there was something with the trees going on at our house. My mom had requested him to save a 6 foot section of our redwood tree that we had cut down in order to make a bench out of it. Not only did they comply, but when my mom tried moving it to the back by herself on a separate day, they did it for her without expecting anything in return and completely out of their own good will. They were also very helpful with cutting roots out; we would dig up the roots and ask them if they would cut them for us and they graciously would. Stumpy's prices are very affordable and are comparable to other tree cutting services, but it's Glenn's willingness to come out and help and make an effort to talk to his clients is the reason my mom chose his company. With 3 other companies that we had come out and price quote, none of them knew what the trees were and gave us answers like "uh.. i think it's ____". When my mom asked Glenn about which tree was which he could answer it without seeing any leaves on the trees. This company is not only very friendly, but they are willing to go above and beyond what is required of them in order to make their customers happy. Great work! Here is how this business operates: 1) Glenn came out to give a quote for significantly trimming a large, unwieldy oak. He discussed options and gave advice about other trees on the property. 2) A written quote, which was very reasonable, followed within a few hours. 3) The office called to schedule the service. A reminder call was made by a human, not a machine. 4) The crew showed up on time. Glenn does a walkthrough, explains everything to the crew, windows are covered near the work to eliminate the chance of damage, and the work begins. 5) Everything is removed after the work is completed, which includes raking the grounds of any debris. 6) The tree was trimmed evenly, exactly the way it was described to me. Spring 2011: I initially hired Glen and his crew to remove some trees in our back yard. They did a great job in taking down the trees and leaving the yard clean when they departed. We've used Stumpy's Tree Service twice. Once to trim two huge Canary Island Palms in our backyard. They did an excellent job. The second time in an emergency when we had a large tree fall in our front yard during the wind storm we had a couple of weeks ago. It was a Sunday and Glen responded to my email within minutes and came to our house right away. He had a crew out in no time and took care of everything. This the second time using Stumpy's for tree cutting. Their workers are excellent. But if you are looking to grind a stump, do your own diligence to locate your water and gas lines. Stumpy's did not check with 811 prior to cutting and grinding. In fact, the project manager was unaware of where my main water line was. Needless to say, they ground through the main water line (and even though it was not as deep as current requirements project it should be) an idea of where it was would've saved us an additional unexpected cost to replace the line and the inconvenience of not having running water for a day. When I called PGE/USA they informed me that it is the contractor/company's responsibility to call 811 to request location of utility lines before the start of the work. Long story short, do your own research as this was a hard lesson learned. We had to pay extra for unintended replacement of our line as it was beyond repair to the tune of several thousands of dollars and still paid full price for Stumpy's work - damage and all. I will say that the owner called me to offer a free grind of another stump, but honestly, that was the last thing I wanted. The more courteous and practical thing to offer would've been a discount on the job they completed....regardless of their "no responsibility" clause in their contract. read more

Glenn is very professional, on time, and fully committed in doing an excellent job. He returned our call within an hour and told us when he would show up to give us an estimate of how much it would cost to take down the trees. We could not be there the first day when the work was being done. However when we got home we were amazed at how open the house had become and if I had not known what was there before, I would not have known they had even come. The next day the crew came back to stump grind the trees and did another clean job. They even helped me move my seven foot tree section to the back yard to dry out , so down the line I can make redwood bench as a souvenir. Wow, these guys are obviously booked up because of their reputation which speaks for itself by all of the review. I originally couldn't get on their schedule for at least a month out, but due to a last minute cancellation (and some extremely urgent tree removal needs we have due to termite problems we were having), they were able to squeeze us in almost immediately. The team that did the job was extremely hardworking for two days straight (they even finished sooner than expected). This past week, Stumpy's removed an 8ft dead tree trunk and 3 shrubs. Their price was more competitive than other tree services. Stumpy's employees left the work area neat and tidy. I met them shortly after completing their work and they were very nice. They offered to show me what they had done to make sure I was satisfied (yes I was). I noticed another tree stump that I had not told Stumpy's and realized it would be a good time to have it removed too. I booked a quotation with Stumpy's based on the great reviews. The quotation process was easy and Ed showed up on time to check-out our giant ash tree. The price quoted was fair and competitive so we decided to book with Stumpy's. The crew showed up within' 30 minutes of the scheduled time to start working on the tree and checked-in and involved me on the walk-through process. They checked-in with my neighbor to let them know they would be working around her house and need to be on the roof. The work took a day and a half due to the size of the tree, but it was a simple process. The only hiccup we experienced, is a branch got away from one of the cutters and put a small hole in the roof. I wouldn't even mention it here, because they took care of it all, but I was very impressed with the owner Glenn and the way he and his crew handled it. When the branch fell, the crew called Glenn, the owner, and he was on-site within' 30 minutes. He then had a roofing contractor on-site within' another 30 minutes to assess the damage. The roofer scheduled a time to come by the following day and Glenn took care of everything. I understand that things like this happen, especially when trimming such a monstrous tree. I was impressed and appreciated the way that Glenn handled everything. He even unexpectedly applied a discount to the trimming service. It wasn't something I would have ever expected, but it was greatly appreciated. The crew did a great job with clean up of any debris in my yard and the neighbors roof and yard. I decided to look for a tree service based on reviews here. I am ecstatic that I did!!! I got a competitive bid, and scheduling took a week or two because they had other commitments, but that didn't bother me. They were scheduled to be here this morning at eight. They showed up about 5-10 minutes early, and Glenn was here to go over in detail what was being done. We were having one tree removed, six fruit trees and one elm tree trimmed, and a Canary Island Date Palm trimmed and shaved. They asked about removing sections of dog run fencing to make taking the one large bay tree down easier, which I was happy to do. They also temporarily took down a shade which they helped make sure was back in place before they left. They removed the elm in record time, and ground the stump out for us. They helped take down the section of property line fence that the bay tree had ruined, and this allowed me to replace it before they were done for the day. The fruit trees look great, the elm tree is awesome, and as for the Canary Island Date Palm...wow! That Canary Island Date Palm is a nasty tree, it's hurt me more than once before when I've trimmed fronds off it. They shaved the trunk and took down the fronds, leaving a nice 'pineapple' shape at the top below a clean half-dome of healthy growth. One thing about that tree as well--squirrels were nesting in it, and they pulled four baby squirrels out of it as they were trimming. They helped us with the squirrels while we got in touch with a wildlife rescue. The wildlife rescue showed up as Stumpy's was leaving, and the guys asked for cards so that they can call and have the right people take care of this in the future! As for clean-up, my yard is cleaner than when they showed up! The Canary Island Date Palm dropped sawdust and junk into my neighbors yard, but before they got to that point, they talked to him, went into his backyard and covered his pool. Once they were done, they cleaned up his yard, uncovered his pool, and made sure he was happy before they left. The neighbors on both sides of me thanked me for what was done, things went so well. When we moved to Livermore we bought a fixer upper and needed someone to help fix the yard. We had never hired an arborist and guessed at what one might cost. We had a 10,000 sq foot backyard that included three pine trees, a sycamore, a birch,a handful of fruitless trees, and a BUNCH of ivy. We needed someone to come and help fix it up since we were sure it hadn't been touched since the house was built. My husband wanted to support a local business and we chose Stumpy's. Stumpy's was professional. They gave us a competitive bid for the job and worked with us since our budgeting was apparently way off the realistic price :) They helped clean up our pine trees, thinned out our sycamore, told us the birch was diseased and removed it, trimmed other plants around the yard, removed two small trees that were planted along the houseline (too close to the house), and cut down all the mini plants that were sprouting in our ivy. It was like we had a new yard. I couldn't believe how wonderful it all looked!! The before and after pictures blow people away. We were happy to give our business to a local company and we loved working with Stumpy's. We happily recommended them to a neighbor when they needed to clean up their sycamore. The only reason I didn't give them five stars is silly... but we asked them to get rid of the mini plants that were sprouting in the ivy. They did, but some of them were chopped down and others were removed. The plants that were chopped down still had a stump in the ground so they sprouted at a later date. No problem though. It was probably hard to dig through that ivy and find the stumps anyways. We'll definitely use them again! Highly recommended! read more

One of their employees is extremely rude and confrontational. I was picking up my son from school and they asked me to move my car because they were trimming trees of the house across the street. There was plenty of room directly in front of the house they were working at but the driver was just to lazy to parallel park his truck and trailer into the space which was already reserved for him with cones. The driver starts shouting at me from his window as I was walking toward my son's school. He starts arguing with me again when I return from picking up my son saying that I just needed to move my car up. Well excuse me if I wanted to park in the shade in 100 degree weather. I called the company to complain about this individual and the receptionist seemed to know exactly who I was talking about. If they already had knowledge of this employee's rudeness, then they should have addressed it or not send him out on jobs. read more

Today, I had an unusual request. I needed a Tree service (Tree climbers) who could come help me rescue my large male Iguana from a large tree in my front yard. I called Stumpys for help. The woman who answered the phone was very professional and kind and took down my information and told be she would pass it on to Glenn to see if he could help. Glenn called me back in a very short time and said he would come, no obligation, make an assessment to see if he thought he could safely get my pet from the tree. When he arrived, we chatted a bit while he made his assessment and we agreed (with no guarantees on how a wild animal would react, understood) he would climb the tree and attempt to get my big boy down. Due to Glenn's careful assessment and smart ideas on how to proceed, My Iguana is safely back where he belongs. I know this is not a service that others are likely to need but the actions and reactions of Glenn and his team prove they are skilled, caring and professional. I have trees, too. The problem was a 60' tree that was encroaching onto a neighbor's house. It was large enough that it spanned over four backyards, right at the intersection of fence lines. First of all, Glenn was right on time when he came to provide an estimate. He is a very professional, straightforward contractor and very easy to talk with about the problem at hand. He was only the second contractor that I had make an estimate on the service that was required, but based on personality and knowledge alone, I knew pretty quickly that Stumpy's was the right company for the job. Their pricing is not at all overblown, but rather, very reasonable and competitive for the industry. On the scheduled day, Glenn and his crew arrived on time. Just as before, he was perfectly professional and ready to get the job done, no BS. What left a lasting impression on me was that his entire crew was courteous and respectful, not only to me, but also towards the neighbors who allowed him access to their yards and the neighbors who would walk by the front of the house and ask the crew questions about what was being done. All necessary communication between myself and the crew was consistent, which is generally not the case with most contractors. They took the tree down to about 25', removed the leader that was encroaching onto the neighbor's house and thinned the entire tree out, which is precisely what had been initially requested. Perfect job. Not only that, but they cleaned up all four yards. More specifically, they left my yard way cleaner than it was before, and I am confident in assuming that they did the same for each of the other yards. If not for all of the obvious fresh cuts, a newcomer to the yard would never even suspect that the tree had just been trimmed back so drastically. They did such a great job that I made sure to leave a good tip on the final check. In fact, the neighbor whose house the tree was encroaching upon was so happy that he even gave me a nice thank you gift for getting the tree trimmed.
