The meat was tender, the gravy on it was delicious and not too heavy, and very tasty on the spaetzle. The meat came with a side salad that I greatly enjoyed; the yogurt dressing I found on several German meals was super delicious. My partner got the Brewer's Salad, but while it was tasty with the maultaschen and sausage, he felt there was too much sweet dressing on the salad part. The beer was tasty! After passing some mediocre looking Thai and Chinese places, I spotted the tiny entrance to the Calwer. Looked vaguely familiar. After sitting at the bar all of two minutes, major flashbacks to 1997 came up. Found the same place by accident in '97 while then too walking without Yelp direction with hunger pangs! Calwer then and now is unique in Germany - a brew on premises pub. What's a little disappointing though is the lack of of Mazen or something hoopy like a Jever. Yeah, I know about the micro-region styles of Germany. A pils, hefe, dunkle and that.s it. Previous visits here coincided with the cannstatter volksfest, so they usually had a rich Marzen on tap (that always had a faint sulfur aroma). The food - textbook Wurtemburgh ~ Swabian German. But they were out of Schwinhauxxen (not unusual for many haufbraus). Had the sauerbraten with spatzle instead - meat was tough, gravy was great, onions were not cooked enough. Big plus is they have a house made Schnapps made from beer. Its good.
