I do not take negative reviews lightly and so it has taken almost two years to post my experience with James, painter and his crew. His contract was six pages too long and confusing on scope of work or what the painting included. The Monday before Thanksgiving, James called and asked if he can move up the day for interior painting of my entire home and I agreed not knowing what I was getting into. After starting painting, he casually informed me that they only had one day to finish painting my entire Interior! This should have been disclosed up front. Fifteen, count them fifteen very young painters converged and took over my home in a disorganized and chaotic manner. Every room was occupied and unusable. Only one worker spoke English so it was impossible to communicate with most crew as James drove off to other jobs. His workers forgot to paint my kitchen cabinets, some kitchen and bath wall areas as well as trim. When I spoke with James, he defended his workers by falsely claiming that I "discriminated against them" and that I offended even his family. Such bizarre and false accusations allowed him enough reason to walk off my job and make early demand for payment in full which they did. Defiantly, James refused to finish the job due to my alleged discrimination, also claiming I was "too picky". James frivolously demanded I pay in full before the job was finished. Which I was pressured and intimidated to do due to the thanksgiving holiday and guests arriving. To this day, my interior paint job, my trim, my cabinets, my home was never completed but they cashed my check and were gone as abruptly as they came. I am sure they arrived on time at their next job. James is certain that I discriminated against his crew despite that they spoke zero English, I speak zero Spanish and more importantly I never spoke or whispered a word to them. I am hoping that James starts to properly supervise his crew and treat customers more respectfully because my personal belongings were taken during their interior painting chaos, an original framed artwork that I painted 20 years ago probably got wrapped in a drop cloth and is hanging in their home. I am still waiting on my original framed painting to be returned to me as I have already emailed James and requested this item be returned. Needless to say, I would not recommend this painter and warn others caveat emptor, buyer beware. read more

James is very responsible, meticulous and responsive. His price was very competitive - and I am talking about thousands of dollars here, and was the real reason we chose his company. His team is fantastic - hard working, responsive to suggestions, small changes we introduces after the contract. My house in Los Gatos is located halfway to summit in the mountains. I found James to be one of the most courteous contractors we've worked with in the recent past. His crew was professional and courteous as well. When I asked for certain changes to be made, his crew was always accomodating. James and crew showed up at the house in the morning on time and finished the job on time. When, during the job, I realized there was additional work I needed, James was able to follow through on my request for a very reasonable fee. Speaking of fees, we got a much lower bid from another painter, but they weren't bonded, licensed, and insured. James and his team were really excellent. The quoted price was reasonable to paint all rooms in my house except the kitchen. It was a very professional job and the improvement is amazing. We have an old house with plaster walls and ceilings, which occasionally crack over time. James' team repaired all cracks in the ceilings and walls, and matched the texture perfectly. Everything looks brand new. Really amazing. I should also note that we were living in the house at the same time as the work was done. James worked with us to move things from room to room over a series of days to make that possible. I know it was not ideal for him and his crew to have us (and our dogs) there, but he was very nice about it and was flexible. I believe the job took longer than he anticipated, but he and his team got it done without rushing or cutting corners, and he stuck to the contracted price. I also appreciated James' advice. He was very helpful in deciding on the brand, sheen and type of paint we would need for our home. I would definitely hire Style Painting again, and I highly recommend this service to anyone. I used Style Painting to paint the interiors of my house recently. James and his crew did a fantastic job!! I got quotes from four different painters and James gave me a pretty reasonable quote. I have experienced many contractors throughout remodeling of my house after the purchase last year (some of them were found on yelp and had five star reviews) and I think James is the most professional and customer satisfaction oriented contractor among them. I feel lucky to encounter him. Here are a few things that especially impressed me. - The proposal document he provided via email was very thorough and detailed. It gave me a clear understanding of the work to be done and the scope of the painting work. - Selection of the paint colors was the most time consuming and painful process for me until James came to my rescue. Even though I called him many times to get consultation, he always kindly gave me good advices on color selection. I was told most of paint contractors are reluctant to give advice on color selection because they don't want to get blamed when the home owners are not happy with the outcome. But, James was different. I believe only one who has long experience with the numerous colors of painting would be able to give advice on color selection with confidence. - Even though he brought two experienced workers, he worked himself on almost all difficult areas. His crew seemed to have good skill and they were not like cheap labors in Home Depot parking lot. - He called me back a day after he had finished painting to check if there was anything I was not satisfied with. I told him I changed my mind and wanted one wall to be repainted with semi-gloss instead of flat. He revisited my place in the next day and repainted the wall with semi-gloss. read more

James is as good as it gets in painting. He is an excellent painter, manages his crew very well and all in all does the paint business proud. But his real talent is in color selection. I first contacted him in June 2014 when I chose the wrong paint color for my living room and dining room. I had another painter do the work and when I wanted to change it they were already booked at another job. I was desperate because I had company coming for a week long visit. James came to my rescue, totally "got" the color gray I wanted and made some suggestions for the crown moulding and base boards that I never would have thought of. My rooms look like a designer did them! I even had him repaint another wall that I had chosen the color for and then felt it was too dark. I can tell you that if I had seen a swatch of the color he recommended I never would have picked it myself. But it was perfect. And now everyone says "WOW" when they see it. In Feb 2015 he painted my husband's office and our front porch and did an excellent job. We recently remodeled our bathroom - March 2015 - and I just let James choose the colors himself. I was at work when he painted but trusted him completely. I came home and was wild about the colors he selected!! He is an artist. My husband and I have referred him to many of our friends and they love him too. I will never use or recommend anyone but James for all future paint projects. My big lesson is that I'm terrible at choosing paint colors and will let James do it from now on! read more

My husband and I recently hired this company to paint all 12 doors inside our fairly new home, 10 yrs. old to be exact. James, the owner, promised and guaranteed that they will do an excellent job painting them from western acoustic to white. We purchased and provided the paint from Kelly Moore. James was nice and friendly on the day he gave the estimate. However, when the day came to actually work on the paint job, he was so rude and unprofessional. He walked into our house with his three men, rushing and walking on our carpeted floor with their filthy shoes. How did I know that...because they just came from another client's house which they power washed. By the way, he was an hour late. After he laid all his dirty and malodorous blankets to protect the floor and gave instructions to his crew, he then rushed out of my house to go to another customer's house. Hence, no supervision and quality control involved. He left two men to stay, one to paint the doors and the other to paint the door frames. Both men were very inexperienced and did an absolute substandard job. I had to request for a paint brush to be used on the doors because the man who was painting them used a paint roller which left a glob of paint on the doors. I couldn't even see the grooves on my doors anymore! By the end of the day, James came back, upset because they were behind schedule for not using a paint roller, blaming me and telling me, "That's why you're not the professional!" So the outcome was, we were left with doors that have a bad paint (uneven paint with visible paint brush marks and some dark areas), globs of paint left to dry and covered the grooves, chipped corners, AND dented door knobs. They also spilled some paint on our carpet and on the flagstones in our patio. James did not collect for the service, but I would rather have paid for a quality work because now, it's more expensive to replace the doors ($145/each). He even admitted that this was his first door paint job but it's too late!!! The damage has been done and now, it's gonna take more time and money to correct it. I even bought them pizza for lunch, hoping to get a better performance and outcome. read more

In mid-August 2011, Mr. Kim and his crew power-washed my redwood fences [2000+ running feet x 6' high] and large rear yard arbors in one morning, and then, the next day, applied new stain and new paint, one-coat each as agreed. I bought all the stain & paint while he & his crew provided the labor, including prep & clean-up. After discussing the necessary details, he offered me a VERY ATTRACTIVE bid [prep time needed was minimal]. Now I did encounter miscalculations in the amount of stain that I needed to provide and made several trips to Home Depot for more stain. A few areas on top of the fences were missed, and clean-up of some minor stain overspray was overlooked on the west side house walls & windows and two patio chairs. I am telling you this because he EXCEEDED my expectations by returning promptly to remedy all my complaints, without my asking, so I was COMPLETELY pleased with his work. We hired Style Painting to paint the outside and inside of two houses for us. The owner, James, has an amazing eye for color and detail painting. He helped me decide what colors would look best with different lighting both inside and out. Our houses are old but James and his crew did great repair on all the siding, cracks and stucco that brought the house back to life. The crew was polite and kept their work area cleaned up. Please do not entrust your painting project to this company. My wife tried to search on-line for the best and qualified person to paint our interior doors, and from reading all of the good reviews on yelp, we hired Style Painting. We met with James, the owner, who seemed trustworthy and knowledgeable in what he does. He also added that his crew has many years of experience in painting. So we decided to move forward with the project, thinking and feeling we're in good hands. What a BIG MISTAKE!!! They left us with damaged doors, not just one, but all 12-13 doors! The doors had uneven paint, brush marks, bumps from globs of dry paint, painted hinges, and dented door knobs. James has no integrity!!! He didn't deliver a quality job as he promised and his crew were very inexperienced. We regret hiring this company. We are very disappointed, dissatisfied, and wished we left the doors the way they were. Maybe if we asked for a sample of their work on one door only, this could have been prevented and saved us from making an expensive mistake. So, please do yourself a favor and hire someone else to do your paint job - someone who's more proficient in painting. read more

I was introduces to James through a friend who had used him in the past to paint his house. I needed the interior which included all the walls, ceilings, closets and ten doors in addition to the exterior of my 4 bedroom about 1600 Sq. ft. house painted and James and his crew were the right team for it. I found his price to do the work very reasonable compared to other quotes I had received for the same job. James and his crew showed up at my house every morning on time and worked very cleanly and fast but efficient and meticulous and were done as promised. They covered my furniture, floor, lights and what was needed to be protected well without getting any paint on them. James has a very good eye for paint and what colors best match the furniture and how outside light reflects inside the room and so on, very satisfied with his suggestions to choose the right colors!! Both interior and exterior of my house look fantastic, just like a new house. Soon after he finished my house he painted my mother's house and she was very satisfied with his work as well.
