Original paint when we bought the house.
    Cindy R.

We bought a house a few months ago and decided to DIY-paint it. I couldn't believe how hard and time-consuming it was, yet I couldn't get the outcome I planned, so my husband and I decided to call around and get a professional to finish it. This company was the only one that took ample time to answer all my queries about the service of the other six companies I called. They also gave a decent quote considering their company is based in the South Bay and my house is in the East Bay. Most companies usually charge up to 30% more if it is out of their area. When my husband and I decided to use Melody Painting, we scheduled a house walk-through. Within a week, the project was started, and I was so surprised that it was all done after three days. The outcome was excellent. The company also did a final walkthrough the next day to check on everything and ensure we were satisfied with their service. Yes, we are!

I am so very impressed with the work ethic of this company! I contracted with them to paint the outside of my house. David is a 100% professional and helped me with the HOA & getting the colors approved, (after I had failed). The work was impeccable and I couldn't be more pleased. David went above and beyond to give me the house I wanted. I will recommend David & Melody Painting to anyone who will listen.

    Unprimed and barely painted

I'm not a professional but I have a bit of painting experience. Most every year of my childhood involved painting at least one of my relatives houses. I picked up jobs with painters while in college. Since then I've painted 2 of our homes inside and out more than once. Melody Painting assured me they would prep well. This didn't happen and a paint job I was hoping to last for years has turned out to be an unprepped whitewash. I had to spend 5 solid days of my own time trying to undo the damage. Regrettably, I'll have to wait till the paint fails where they didn't prepare the surface to fix the bulk of the damage. Half of the body of the house I had already prepped and painted less than 5 years ago. The other half still needed prepping. I know how long it takes to prep a house. Several hours into the job I came out expecting to see them at work sanding patching and preparing the chalky, alligatored surfaces, filling cracks in the stucco and preparing to prime all surfaces. To my surprise they were nearly done with the "second coat" on the house and the trim had been spot primed with apparently no prep work. They had used about 8 gallons of the 20-25 gallons of the high quality SW elastomeric paint I had bought (and they had estimated) for the job. I had hoped to get a full 18mils coat. Their "second" coat was still so thin I could still see the fine alligator cracking. The only way this could count as 2 coats is if you count the back-rolling of the sprayed paint as a second coat. I could see primer through in spots. They had hidden the cracking with a heavily textured sealant and hastily applied it over some of the damaged paint without any other prep. This looked odd because the original light texture on the 80 yr old house has mostly disappeared after multiple layers of paint have smoothed it out. Now in the middle of a nearly smooth wall there are these areas of "canned texture" that stand out like somebody mixed gravel in the paint for 2 strokes. Two more strokes of gravel-laden paint were applied 4 feet away across the smooth wall. This looks awful. It is really very sloppy. I complained about the thickness of the paint so they put another coat on the house using about another 5 gallons. It was still nowhere near the 18 mils I wanted. Charlie said "It's just a house I'm not Picasso" but he agreed to do one more coat while his other guys were painting the trim. The trim was the worst part. It was obvious (see pictures) that there had been no prep work as laid out in the quote. Peeling, cracking paint, minimal priming, no surface prep, no sanding, scraping, no steel brush, no electric tools, no holes filled. The prep time accounted for about 1/20th of the job. Meanwhile, the shed still had areas between the siding that had no paint because the guy spraying didn't climb down to move the latter so his paint gun wasn't blowing paint across the wall at a 45 degree angle. The edges of the siding didn't get any paint. This was another area I had to do by hand. While I'm no professional, neither are they. The "clean-up" however, takes the cake. The equipment was cleaned and all the toxic debris was poured at the base of my tangerine tree in an organic garden. The toxins have probably worked their way into all of the 10 fruit trees in the garden. Thanks for that, really nice guys. When they were done I told them to leave the taping/paper up as I would roll on another coat myself. I've spent five days repairing what they did and there's still a lot to redo.

Fixed cracks near our entry way.

It needed a lot of work. I interviewed about 8 painters before making a final decision and decided on Paint911 because Jay seemed the most professional. He wasn't the cheapest, but here's a few of the things on what stood out from other painters. 1) He charges for labor only and will have Sherwin Williams call you for payment so you know you the paint type you request is the one you're getting and no markup or upcharge is added on materials. Also ensure there is no bait and switch like some other painters when you are promised a higher grade, but they use a cheaper grade. He also allows you to use his contractor discount and you can get a receipt from Sherwin Williams 2) Communicated effectively and gave me updates. His contractors also spoke English so it was easy to communicate with them. 3) Professional Contract for Scope of Work with warranty listed via Docusign. 4) His workers used protective coverings on everything so it was very clean work. 5) When I noticed a few things needed to be caulked or touch up, he sent his worker back to ensure it was to my mom's standard. 6) Does wood work really well if your house is old and has termite damaged wood and new wood needs to replaced. Charges slightly extra but it's worth it for peace of mind 7) Provides itemized receipt and receipt for all the materials so it's transparent and no further markup is added on the supplies. We were pleased with Cartwright Painters who made the exterior of our house beautiful once again…read more Cartwright was fast, reliable, responsive, and professional. Our project manager, Aaron Milne, quickly responded to our questions and concerns. His quote was complete in that he included details about all the repairs we requested of him: repair cracks in the stucco, stain and seal our front door, and paint our back deck. He explained to us the types of paints that were available from Sherwin-Williams, Cartwright's supplier. He priced the project competitively and when I called him to discuss his competitors' prices he made some adjustments. We obtained estimates from two other licensed, and three unlicensed, painting contractors. We spoke by phone with multiple references for two of Cartwright's competitors. Cartwright's references were as good as or better than the other companys' references. In addition, whereas Cartwright gave us a complete and final quote, their competitors' quotes all varied in price and completeness. For example, some competitors required us to buy the paint before the project was to begin whereas others would buy it if they were reimbursed before work commenced. In other cases, all other competitors incomplete quotes by not responding to our specific requests. Cartwright's quote was complete and businesslike. They have a net 30-day contract with their paint suppliers which means that they only asked us for a 10% down payment before they started work. The balance was due upon satisfactory completion of the project. We were pleased with the professionalism and friendliness of our painting crew, Aurelio and Ramiro. We are grateful to them for having taken time to show us three different paint schemes on our house. They painted three swathes of our trim and walls in the front and back of the house. This was determinant in our color selection. Our crew worked diligently throughout the five and a half days it took to complete the project. Moreover, they worked during the first week of July, 2024, the hottest this year. We often spoke with Aurelio about taking time for rest breaks. We agreed to earlier start times on several hot days. They always started work on the shadiest side before painting other parts of the house. Aurelio's work on our front door was most impressive because it was a singular challenge. He is a master painter. Aurelio and Ramiro sanded the wood until it was completely bare, and then they stained the doors over two days before adding a final polyurethane finish. The result was excellent. We are pleased with Cartwright Painters and we highly recommend them to you for your exterior painting project.

In contrast, Eric and his team spent over a week with a crew twice as big doing a very solid job preparing and patching and then painting our two-story house. Everyone was a very diligent worker, friendly and polite, and they coordinated with a skilled carpenter to replace damaged wood. Now our place looks fantastic. Between the prep work and the high quality paint from Sherwin Williams, we are confident we won't need to repaint again in 5 years! They also did a great job with our neighbor's house, and gracefully handled challenges like our two garages being 10 inches apart. Would recommend.
