Got the grilled chicken and cheese and I wish I would've just gone to Jersey Mikes or something. The place was clean and bathrooms were clean but the sub was not what I was expecting. The chicken had absolutely no flavor I mean it tasted like water, the bread wasn't toasted and I'm not even sure if that was an option as they didn't say much to me while I was there. I went to check out and the lady was distracted by something else I don't know what because the place was dead in there but I'm standing there waiting for my receipt, after the payment went through something printed up, she grabbed it and put it aside and turned to leave and I was like, um can I get a receipt please? We were facing an hour and fifteen minutes prior to our play at the nearby Logos Theater for a Saturday matinee at 2PM. Our first choice to eat was the Farehouse, conveniently located, but they had a long back up in the kitchen due to a very large party of two dozen or more. I'm thinking, what do I know on this side of town and Sub Station II came to mind. In the late 1970's I used to visit here frequently for their New York style subs and they had the only and first Space Invaders video game in the area. Probably around 1977. The reason for only five stars is because they have done nothing to the interior since 1977. There are items stored out in the open that shouldn't be, like the vacuum cleaner and other supplies - just an oddity. The restaurant was clean as were the bathrooms, but it was bare bones for tables & chairs. There were two sandwich makers plus the cashier/manager who also made sandwiches. He was good about washing hands after handling money and then donning gloves to jump in on the sandwich making. He was also very thorough about making sure he made the sandwiches exactly the way each customer wanted. There were about 8 orders in front of our 6 orders, but time for our sandwiches came quicker than I thought it would. What makes the place is the sub, supposedly they are New York style. They are everywhere now in this style, but in 1977 this was the only game in town and they are still very good. The meats are fresh cut, the bread is baked on premises from a "special recipe" formulated just for Sub Station II and each sub bread is toasted so that it can hold up to the "all the way" style: oil, vinegar, lettuce, onions, tomato, oregano, salt and pepper (red pepper). Everyone was surprised at how good the subs were and we made a note to return more often. And we made it to the theater in plenty of time too! read more

Always love SubStation II, but it seems lately the quantity of meat has really gone down. Still good quality meat and freshly sliced, but a third of the amount that you would get any competitor in the area. Outside of that, really enjoy this place! read more

I'm giving it a one star because the sub was good. Everything else you had to see it to believe it. The whole restaurant was filthy dirty, top to bottom. Is the owner asleep at the wheel? The employees got into a shouting contest just like others posted. It seems this place has really gone down hill judging by the reviews. We usually go to another location to eat and love the sub, but will never return to this particular location. Even though the food was good there's absolutely no reason for the filth. read more

Hate to leave a negative review. Tables extrenely dirty . While manager on duty was in process of changing prices to their menu, his employees was goofing off instead of cleaning. Owner came in while there was some customers in the store and srarts yelling at them about company issues that should be kept confidential. I worked for in the summer of 1990 and he was the same way back then. As I got older and owned my own business and later spent about 30 years in retail management, I made a promise I would treat my employees with respect and I did. Anything that was a company matter or personnel matter was done in private with a witness never in the preeence of customers. I like the food here but not sure I can overlook his behavior. I think it is his time to retire and let someone else run the business. read more

Came all the way from Atlanta to see family and HAD to stop here substation is my childhood lol. When I spent the summers in Taylor's my papa would bring me here for lunch. They've gotten rid of the numbers but I ordered a ham turkey and cheese sub and my husband got the number 19 salad. The two guys in here were really nice and before leaving even asked if we enjoyed everything. I'm happy substation 2 is still open and I hope they continue to stay in business. These subs are bomb! I was told this place was really good and I had to find out for myself. Great, friendly customer service! I ALWAYS go for the Italian at any sub shop even if I feel like I want something else, but this time I did it and dived into a different sub. I ordered the Ham, Turkey and Cheese on white bread with bacon, lettuce, tomato, oil, vinegar and mayo. Let me get started on this, their foot longs are huge! I couldn't even finish my 2nd half and which I normally can. The bacon is not that microwavable meat that looks sad and pathetic, it's real bacon with a crunch and thick. That gave the sub a nice texture and perfect amount of salt that didn't over power the taste. You get a pickle spear, yum! I love this place, try it out! read more

This might be a bit of a homer review. I've been going to this particular Sub Station II since I was in elementary school. When my family moved to Virginia for a few years, I would stop by here to get a sandwich whenever we came back to visit family. I love Sub Station II. I'm not sure I can give a fair review here, I only order the #19 Super Special, now just a Super Special since they've dropped the numbers from their menu. Basically its an Italian: ham, Genoa salami, zippy pepperoni, turkey breast, bologna, and a hot ham (commonly called cappicola). I always get my #19 "All the Way", by definition this should include Crushed Red Pepper; however, they will still ask you if you want Crushed Red Pepper. By the way, you do. Totally your call, but I also ask for mine on un-toasted bread as this is how it was served when I was a kid. If you're a local, you are most likely already familiar with this little gem. read more

SS2 is my go-to sandwich joint! Not many sub shops cut their deli meats and cheeses fresh, but these guys do. The #19 Super Special is my usual, but they're all consistently fresh. However, this is not the kind of place you go to for decor and atmosphere. It's unashamedly old school and I'm okay with that. And you should be too. read more

It's been years and years since I've ate at Sub Station II. I normally go with Jersey Mike's, but they are pretty expensive compared to most other sub places. Plus, SSII was close to where I was today, so we decided to give it a shot. I ordered the chicken "cheesesteak" if you want to call it that. The staff was two ladies, both of them weren't very personable, but they weren't rude or unprofessional, either. I couldn't taste the cheese, and there was more bread than anything. The regular did not fill me up, so I'm a bit disappointed and wish I would have ordered the large. Overall, the taste wasn't bad, but it definitely isn't like a cheesesteak at all. I may consider going back, but for now I think to get my fill I'll probably just go to Jersey Mike's instead if I want a cheesesteak. For other things, maybe I'll come back here. My son ordered a turkey and my husband spicy Italian, so I'll have to wait and see how theirs taste! read more

Hole in the wall sub joint. It's a Taylors classic. So much better than the other sub chain. The bread is soft, chewy, with a good crust. The meatballs and marina are great, also. It's a family favorite for easy sandwiches. read more

I moved to the area in 1982 and began eating at this place shortly after that. For decades this was the best sub place around. Unfortunately, times change. Apparently, this franchisee has decided to cheapen the product. If the slicer was adjusted any thinner, the meat and cheese would be transparent. Same number of slices as before, just no meat or cheese. As much as I hate Subway, they now have a better product and a better value. If they fix their product, I'll gladly return, but so far they are ignoring the problem. read more

I've been getting subs here since I was a kid! The number 19, now called the super special, is delicious! The bread is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and blows the competition away. The meats are sliced fresh and veggies are always crisp and the pickles that come with it are the best! Highly recommend! read more

Have a hangover? Go to Sub Station II. This is THE best hangover food in the world. Something about the super soft bread, toppings, and meat and cheese combinations just sops up all of those gross hungover feelings and whips you right back into shape. I always get the number 19 with extra salami instead of bologna with Garden Salsa flavored Sun Chips. Bonus: there is a shaved ice stand in the parking lot of this location with my favorite shaved ice. :) read more
