Subterra fills a long-empty gap in the restaurant scene in Newberg, providing great fresh seasonal food, prepared thoughtfully and creatively, at a really reasonable price. All of their entrees are under $21, and come with soup and salad. They also have some really excellent small plates, and a wine list that is superb. This was subterra-ble. My group was a party of four, and all our entrees were not great. The tomato soup tasted store bought, and the bean soup was too salty. The house salad, consisting of arugula, two endives, two slices of grapefruit, and a beet were an odd combination in flavor and texture. The goat cheese and its watery remnants couldn't have even saved the salad. The entrees weren't much better. The pork shoulder was overcooked and drenched in an uncomplimentary mixture of a creamy sweet and salty sauce that included capers and leeks. The steak shoulder was cooked correctly, but the sauce was watered-down and bland. The zarzuela was highly disappointing. This Spanish inspired dish is suppose to be rich in texture with flavors and spices, but it was watery and tasted more like a bad cioppino. The dish also didn't have any sausage in it, despite listing it as an ingredient. The halibut was cooked right, but the sauce was a little too sweet. The restaurant's sommelier suggested two different wines that got mixed reactions among the group. The only good food we all enjoy was the brie with fig and hazelnut topping. The waitress was also very friendly and helpful, despite there being only two waitresses for the restaurant on a busy Saturday night. Overall, it was an extremely disappointing meal. read more

We had a hard time finding this hidden treasure, but glad we didn't give up on the hunt! It's in a gray building that offices and commercial, and then you see a small sign for Subterra. It is down about 8 to 10 steps and we hesitated, but went and glad we did! We had a late lunch. I had the smoked salmon salad, and I can't rave about it enough. The fish was wonderfully smoked with authentic flavor. Salad was crisp and fresh and filed with apples, and dried cherries that had been soaked, and some squash, and put it all together, and I'd say I would have it again. My husband had the turkey sandwich, which I thought would be boring, but it was anything but boring. The turkey, also had a wonderful smoked flavor, with a beautiful really beautiful tomato and lettuce. Turkey was moist, and the only reason I didn't give the restaurant a 5 star was the homemade bread for the sandwich shouldn't have been served because it was charred on the outside. The inside was good but I felt the server or us....somebody should have sent this back to be made on bread that didn't have charred crust. Other than that, great wine, very lovely restaurant, great menu, and we would recommend it and we also would return! read more

This review is for those with food allergies. I can't eat gluten or dairy and made the mistake of not calling ahead to make sure they could accommodate. I figured a high-end, from scratch restaurant would be able to make substitutions if nothing on the menu worked as-is. They had one entree (scallops) that was gf & df...and I don't like scallops. Otherwise, all their sauces had butter in them and they were not willing to offer any alternatives other than the house salad and the soup. So while my friends ate what looked like delicious food, the inattentive wait staff avoided me for the rest of the time there and I ate a TINY $4 salad and a TINY $4 cup of soup (which they didn't even bother to serve me with the other entrees so even though I ate it very slowly I sat through most of the meal watching the others eat. The food was good, but the service was pretty awful (all of my friends thought so too). I would have gladly paid for a bowl of soup (which is what I thought I had ordered) but our waitress was barely there at some point I gave up on the idea that I wouldn't leave hungry. My lesson learned was to call ahead no matter where I go, but I would not recommend this restaurant if you have food allergies as they don't seem interested in accommodating. read more

Yay!! On a business trip to Newberg, my friends and I stopped in to eat some yummy food. We started with the Black Bean Soup, which was super delish!!Then, on to the salad! Hazelnuts, blueberries!!! How can anyone resist? Finally, I ended up having the Sweet Potato Angliotti, which was hand made! I would totally recommend this place. If you are in a hurry, forget about it. A very pleasing experience. The food was varied with the onion soup being passable and tasted like it was from a can. The salad was great and the main courses wee very good with the exception that the rack of lamb was warm and not hot. It might have waited under a heat lamp to long. Wine list was good and the markups were reasonable. The service was generally very good but started off poorly. Considering there were only a few tables occupied when we arrived. I was in the dining room with my husband on 4/9/11, and must strongly oppose Lindsi's review. I noticed the table that she must have been a part of, and also saw the steaks that she was referring to as "very rare." I completely disagree with that description, but chalked it up to inexperience with steaks and temperatures. Not everyone knows what a medium rare steak should look like. I also found it hard to believe that it took them an hour and a half for entrees considering nobody else in the restaurant had that problem. The wait staff is very efficient, even under pressure. I have been a regular at this restaurant for a couple of months now. I have tried many of the lunch and dinner menu items and haven't found a single thing I didn't love! Even things, like scallops, that aren't necessarily my favorites, have blown my taste buds away. The head chef, and owner, is so creative with his flavor combinations. I have rarely found such amazing food at such unbelievable prices. From what I could gather with all the coupons and gift certificates that the table was using, it seemed like just another comp-hungry group of people looking for something for free. And as far as the negatively over-exaggerated review Lindsi wrote, well, some people just shouldn't write when they are pouting. To those who are reading all of these reviews: don't take my word for it... or anyone else's, for that matter. Go down there and try them out for yourselves. I took my mom here for her birthday for lunch - however I chose to go because I saw the menu online which turned out to be the dinner menu... but BONUS for them, they made an exception and let me order off the dinner menu at lunch time and I had the opportunity to order what caught my eye online, the avocado chicken dish which was AMAZING! The service and atmosphere tipped me over to 5 stars, otherwise it would have been four. Rewind to the starters, the "Melted Brie with Maple Bourbon Fig Jam" - to die for and "Edamame Hummus" which was a good spread but the bread was burnt a bit. My mom ordered a fresh salad which needed more dressing and could do without the grapefruit which makes it too sour - should be replaced with sliced peaches or pears - just our preference. Pricing was fair for wine and food. Loved that the menu was unique and changed with the seasons. We will go back again and look forward to it. read more

The food was very good. I was happy with my Zarzuela and my wife loved her veal steak. Salads were ok. Soups were good. Desserts were good. There was an adequate wine selection for a fair price. We enjoyed the one we got. We had nice servers who were attentive to our needs. in particular we were told twice that the main courses would be delayed. I found that frustrating in that I asked for a later reservation and was asked to come in earlier than we wanted to. In the end dinner took over two hours. When I returned to the hotel the concierge asked how it was and I commented on great delay apparently caused by kitchen. He replied that if a returning guest has any concern it is because of long delays during meal. Potential diners be warned: this is slow food...but it was good with good service except for the kitchen. read more

I finally get to write a review for Subterra!! I have been wanting to go, so a co worker and I went to lunch there today. It is her favorite restaurant, and now I see why! Everything was outstanding, and I already want to go back. Upon her recommendations I had their margherita which was simply superb. So fresh and light tasting, we even had double the tequila.. delic. We ordered off of the small plate portion of the menu to try a couple of her faves. The steak kabobs and the bacon topped asparagus. I am a sucker for anything that comes with a sauce to dip, both of which these had. The steak was out of this world on a cute little plate drizzled with a delightful sauce to dip in. Six pieces of thick juicy tasty perfect steak! The asparagus also as gorgeous as it tasted topped in crazy good bacon with a mousse type textured mustardy goodness type sauce to dip in... This is one of the best kept secrets in Oregon's wine country. It is hard to find, located in the bottom floor of an older building. But don't give up. Really disappointed the last visit. The first two times I had dinner here the service was excellent. The owner greeted me and the food was excellent. My last visit the service was not great. Came in the door and no staff members to be seen. I had to ring the bells on the door a second time to get someone to stop their conversation in the kitchen to hear me. Was treated to lunch here today for my birthday. I have lived in Newberg for 4 years and never tried this place. It was very good. The ambiance was really lovely but my only complaint would be that it was quite cold inside...I had to keep my coat on, which is not a fun way to enjoy lunch. To the food....the lunch menu choices were all good. I had the quiche and salad...quiche was light and very flavorful with spinach, sun dried tomatoes, and bacon. The side salad was typical mixed greens with a few hazelnuts and pickled onion on top. My friend had the Newberger which looked amazing and she said had great flavor. My dessert was the housemade fresh mint ice cream which was delicious! True mint flavor and you could see and really taste the fresh mint. Prices were reasonable for a very nice lunch with white tablecloths. Besides the temperature my other little complaint would be why were we crammed into a tiny table for two when the entire restaurant was practically empty....just sayin. I meant to write a review a few weeks back but haven't had a chance. We went on a Friday night and were able to be immediately seated. We were all alone on the left side of the restaurant, which was nice (there were 6 of us). I started with the cuban black bean soup (I don't eat clam chowder) and it was a little too much bean for me. I barely ate a quarter before I had to stop. The flavor was good but wish it was more than just a bowl of beans. For dinner, I had the chicken saltimbocca and it was good. I wish it was served on a larger plate. The portion size was fine but it was difficult to eat on the small rectangle plate it was served on. It ended up getting a bit messy when trying to cut the chicken and asparagus. I tried a bite of the pork and for not liking mustard, it was good. The service was ok. Our server was so funny and friendly.. Just a bit on the forgetful side. It was a reasonable price for dinner and we were not rushed. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back but I would recommend to anyone looking for something decent and low key. read more

We stopped in for dinner on July 18, 2013. After our great experience here last year, we decided to make dining at Subterra a tradition on our annual trip to OR wine country. The food was wonderful, and the service was very good. This is not a fast-food restaurant, so you need to go here knowing that you'll have more than just a meal. Consider it an evening out in a relaxed environment. I particularly liked that they don't try to rush you through your meal just to turn the tables. And quaffing a bottle of wine isn't a chugging competition. They used to comp corkage fees for visiting winemakers (of which I'm one), but they didn't do it this time. That's the only negative aspect to our experience there. I can wholeheartedly recommend Subterra for a relaxed, fine-dining experience. read more

The entrees come with soup and salad (where do you get that), and most things were under $30 (all in). They have a great wine list AND you can bring your own for a $15 fee for corking. What a deal. This was one of the best dinners we have had out in a long time. Sam, our waitress although new to the area was very helpful and knowledgeable. We started with a small plate, the crab and shrimp salad - absolutely wonderful - the favors blended together nicely. We both had the beef and mushroom soup which was very nice - salad was ok. Entrees - I had the potato crusted halibut which was excellent! Very moist but potato crust was perfect as was the vegetable and mashed potatoes. It was the best I have ever had, not too dry and flavorful. My husband had the beef short ribs which he said were also very good. Some pieces were just a bit stringy but most were very good. The atmosphere was very nice and pleasant and the menu was well done. It is nice to see soup and salad offered with the entree, not done much anymore. The wine list was more than adequate, full price range and many local wines offered. The crab and shrimp salad was an excellent choice to start our meal - very well done. We will be back! read more
