Worst company I've ever dealt with. We sold our house in July and it's almost December and they have yet to pick up their tank! We had auto delivery while living there yet we ran out and were charged an emergency delivery fee for their error!!!!! We have had the tank locked for non payment even with a credit card on file for 4 years! My advice is support a locally owned company where they actually care about your business!! read more

They are unethical to the core. They took away our old propane tank, which we owned and which was in perfectly good condition, and replaced it with one of their own. This was done without our knowledge or approval. They then had the gall to institute a tank rental fee ! We are refusing to pay so they just locked our propane tank, which is full, so we cannot access the gas we already paid for until we give them their fee. They also deliver fuel to you when you don't need it, filling the tank with no more than a few gallons but then charging you the "minimum" for delivery which is a lot more than the cost of the gas itself. In the past we also used them for heating oil but eventually severed ties because it became clear to us that their technicians were not servicing the boiler honestly. The boiler would go out, they would come and charge a whopping amount for an "emergency" call - hundreds of dollars - and then a few months later the boiler would go out again. We started to suspect they were incompetent or maybe "fixing" it so it would break again soon. We called in an independent plumber who fixed it once and it stayed fixed for years. Take our advice: even if you haven't had any trouble with them yet, you will. Sever ties now. read more

This company is terrible to work for and they raise prices and never bring them back down. People leave and they expect one employee to do the work of 3 with no compensation so they can make budget and get their big bonus. They say they will not pay me for my vacation hours due to their policies but the "policies" are not the same for everyone. They say customers come first but every time you go to management with an issue you are told that there is nothing we can do for them!! Do not work here. Do not do business with them!! read more

We had a budget plan in place with Suburban.A few months into the contract, the budget was reevaluated. They then made our payment over $300 per month than what it was supposed to be originally. I found out later on that this happened because they underestimated how much fuel we would be using. We don't use an astronomical amount of fuel, and just by using Google I was able to see that we used right around the same amount as the average household. If I can go on Google and find that out, then why can't the people who work there come up with an estimation that makes sense. A difference of over $300 per month is outrageous. I make payments online, and neither the account dashboard or the "pay my bill" option indicates a current balance. You have to go into your transactions in order to see it. Our plan called for $150 per month and I paid $100 every two weeks, so I assumed that everything was fine. So for a few months my account kept going in the negative because nobody alerted me that either our bill was past due or that our budget plan had changed. I called and when I found out that our budget plan had been changed, I cancelled our next delivery and told them that I would not be doing business with them again. I had been charged multiple late fees. In the months that all of this was going on, we had another issue and had called a few times regarding that. At no time on the phone did any representative feel the need to let us (my husband and I) know that the account was overdue. After all this happened, my husband's uncle, who works for the company, noticed that my husband was not getting the "friends and family" discount on fuel. Which we were supposed to have gotten the entire time. So we were told that it would be applied to our current balance. I called today because I thought I had paid it off and noticed we still had a balance. When I spoke to the manager of the Albany Suburban branch (who I had spoken with many times previously), she told me that they would not be applying the discount, since we were choosing not to continue with Suburban Propane in the future. She said that when they were discussing applying the discount, she did not know that I would not be continuing service. That is a complete lie. Every time I spoke with her I made it clear that I would be done with Suburban once our contract is up. I even posted a status on Facebook regarding my experience and the manager CALLED ME to ask me to take the post down. I told her that I wouldn't take it down and that people should know about my experience and about how Suburban Propane does business. In the post I clearly stated I would never go through Suburban again. So to be told that we should have been getting charged less for 8 months, but that we are not entitled to get that money back, is INFURIATING. Don't waste your time here. They charge way above every other company for fuel. Not only that, but I feel that in all my interactions, this company has been shady and deceiving.I will NEVER go through them again and I will absolutely be warning any of my friends or family members who are considering them. read more

This is a very shady operation. Charged me over $6 per gallon due to my failure to sign up for the plan where you agree to pay around $2 a gallon in August. So that was my bad, I guess. The problem is that when I decided to dump them as my provider, I actually had to contact the NY State Attorney General before they would get the tanks off my property. Don't think that propane supply companies are like gasoline stations where the prices are 5 to 10 cents a gallon different. We've been with them for 20 years. Suburban Propane on their pre-buy plan is always 60 to 80 cents a gallon more than any other Capitol area propane supplier and that's their Cheapest Price! Most homes use about 2000 gallons a year so that's $1,200 more for propane a year with Suburban. Their racket: the home builder contractor doesn't have to pay for a propane tank as Suburban gladly delivers/installs/ and rents the tank. Saving the home builder contractor ~$3000. The new home buyer moves in and the doesn't realize they are paying $1,200 a year more than they should be paying. When and if they realize, Suburban makes it extremely difficult to remove their tank and our tank is buried so we are stuck. Of course Suburban will not sell you their tank as everyone would buy the already installed tank and Suburban's racket would be gone. They would have to compete on price, which they could easily do, being the largest propane purchaser/seller in the USA. However with a business model of $1,200 over charged per customer and their just over 1 million locked customers, due to their tanks being already installed, that's how they make their $1.2 billion a year. read more

Suburban Propane. How did I start doing business with them? Being unfamiliar with propane, I thought that because they are a national company and well known, it would be my best option. Far from it. Because of a Facebook post about the cost of fuel, I started to be curious. I found that Galway Co-op was charging .89 a gallon for a $35 a year sign up fee, and checking my cost, I was paying $2.89. Are you kidding me? I use over 3,000 gallons a year. So Suburban kindly offered me a great deal, $2.29, and I of course said no thank you. The glitch: Suburban owns my tank. My new company, Nolan, has prices are attached to Galway's, have no annual fee, own one of the largest fuel storage facilities in the region, and no hidden costs; however, they won't fuel up a Suburban tank. I had to excavate and remove the tank, and install a new one. I received a flat fee for the state of the art 500 gallon tank from Nolan, including excavation, installation, and backfill, for a flat $2,000. That's less than half of everyone else, and since I'm saving more than $3,000 a year by switching, it was a no brainer. The thing about Suburban is they would not sell me the tank. The tank can't be resold, it's going for scrap, and the fuel and manpower to pick it up and do that could have been offset by my purchase, which they would not entertain. Never rent your tank!! But here's the kicker: Suburban promised me a refund for fuel left over in their tank. Great. Today, they told me they would pick up their tank on February 9, two weeks from now, and even worse - that my refund would be $2.89 per gallon, MINUS $1 per gallon. My conclusion is that by not selling homeowners a tank they've been using a decade, and that they wont' refund the cost of the fuel, or refund the cost minus the profit, and by being unable to compete with the real cost of propane, .35 above the spot rate, which is currently .59, they can't be part of the game. They argue their overhead is higher. I argue they have more customers. The bottom line is that one should always check their fuel company, phone/cell provider, cable company and the like, on a regular basis, to see if he is getting screwed. Hat tip to Facebook for having this sort of thing out there, which is yet another reason social media is more than just fun and games. PS I'd like to add that I spent hours and hours shopping, and asked others to make me an offer knowing the deal I had with Nolan. All of Mr. Robert Nolan's peers said he's a stand up guy, fair, does good business, is growing his storage capacity in a smart way, and is an all around great guy with a great company. read more

Warning: DO NOT sign up with Suburban Propane!!! Too many hidden fees: transfer fee, yearly safety check fee, yearly equipment rental fee, minimum charges, taxes etc. I used very little propane last year but hidden somewhere in my contract it states that I MUST get a yearly delivery or else get hit with another huge fee. They even have an EARLY termination fee so I'm locked into a contract. Do your homework and find a cheaper more reputable company to work with. read more

One of the biggest suppliers, Suburban is also by far the most expensive for heating oil, and their service is rude & slow. Early in winter 2015, they were charging close to a dollar more per gallon than the local competition - on a 250 gallon tank that's a lot of money! I dumped their terrible service and went with a local company. When you call Suburban you never know if you're speaking to someone local or in a call center. The people on the phones are horribly rude. I will NEVER use them again. Once my stove propane runs out I'll be having them pick it up, and again go with a local operation. AVOID THIS COMPANY FOR YOUR OWN FINANCIAL SAKE!! read more
