Still waiting on a refund from ending service. They must like earning 4-5 weeks of interest on my money. Went with CES Propane several years ago and absolutely pay less and get great service. Over the years with Suburban I was unaware of the excessive overcharging by this company. I literally lost thousands and Suburban could not explain why they were the absolute highest price in town. They suggested that other companies were not as dependable, that they may run out of propane and that they would not maintain their low prices. After several years I can say unequivocally that none of those claims are true. CES is dependable, they never run out, and their prices remain well below Suburban's prices. I suspect other companies might afford dependable service at reasonable prices...Suburban is not one of them. read more

I do not recommend this company. They pop up here and there to fill your tank. Funny thing is we weren't using our tank. We had it as a back up. They would claim to fill it so and so each time. So how can you continue to "fill" a full tank. And how do you fill a tank by just checking it..? I was home. I could see what they were doing. Poor customer service, talk you in circles with no solutions. Tried for 5 months to have our tank picked up and every time we called we were told that no service vehicle has been out to our area. How would no other customers in our area need service for 5 months?? Lies. AND the service center is five minutes down the road from us. We finally had enough and got back on the phone. The woman on the phone mentioned that there was going to be a truck in our area the day we called. Yeah, only because we put up a fight. So then after 5 months, the tank finally got picked up. Two days later, the company was already charging us. So for five months they couldn't pick up their tank and do what we were asking, but they were sure to charge us right away to get what they wanted. Absolutely will NEVER be recommending Suburban to anyone. The little community we live will be sure to hear about the horrible service provided. read more

Suburban Propane is an extortion company. They hide behind a "contract" that gives you as the customer no say in the amount of fuel delivered or the cost of the product. They deliver without any notice, even if you don't need it. Last summer they delivered 14 gallons and charged us a minimum fee of $230. This year I caught the delivery guy mid fill and told him I didn't want any. He said it was almost full and only gave us a few gallons. The price this summer is $5.75 a gallon. I can only imagine the bill I will receive! I called and told them it was extortion and to come take the tank. I was told it was $150 tank removal fee and $1.00 per gallon that was left in the tank. We are being held hostage by this awful company. Stay away from Suburban at all costs. read more

This company is a total scam. They raised their rates by double for the winter and then forced a fill on me when I didn't even need one just to collect whatever money they could while doing other fills in the area. I will never recommend them to anyone. Stay clear from them. Their rates right now are $1 higher per gallon than any of the 3 other gas companies in the area. They went from $2.29 a gallon to $4.10 per gallon without any notice of course. My last fill was in August 2021 and I'm the only person living here so I don't use gas a lot and don't often have to get fills. Previous I was on auto fill The driver would always text or call when in the area and to see if I need fills and I haven't since August so I usually say no. In October I changed my auto fills to at will. Well on 11/08/2021 I was doing farm work and noticed the driver open the gate and pull in. By the time I was up the hill from the farm he was getting ready to hook up his line. I knew I didn't need a fill and I asked why he was here getting ready to fill when I did not request a fill and he did not ask before hand...he said he was in the area and decided to fill the tank. I literately opened the tank and the gauge was at 60%...they only fill to 80%...meaning in 3 months I had only used 20% of my gas...therefore the remaining 60% would have lasted me AT LEAST another 4-6 months. They just upped the rates and wanted to collect money for absolutely no reason other than the fact that they were in the area. I asked this technician multiple times not to fill my tank since I did not need, want, or request it...he said well I'm here anyway so I'm going to do it. I then walked away as w woman by herself feeling threatened by a grown man... Then they turn around and slap me with w $300 bill which is how much it would normally cost to fill my tank if it's empty!!!! I called in to express my issues and concerns and they basically laughed in my face after I told them I wouldn't pay it. They then proceeded to lock my gas tank over the 20% of gas I did not want to pay for...I had 60% gas sitting in that tank that I had paid for in October 2021 from an august delivery...they had absolutely no right to lock my tank out. I told them to come get their tank and refund the money I had already paid for the gas they would not let me use and Kelly laughed in my face and said they wouldn't be doing anything. With no notice or anything they walked on to my gated property while I wasn't home and locked the tank...in winter. No laundry, no hot water for anything, no heater, nothing all over 20% of gas I asked them not to put in my tank. This place is terrible, I would never recommend them to anyone. I paid the fee just to get the tank unlocked to utilize the gas that was already paid for. I will be emptying this tank completely, sending it back, and never using this company again. I filed a complaint with BBB and they responded by lying and saying that I was on auto fill and that's why I received a delivery without my permission. In October when paying a bill I specifically told the lady on the phone I didn't want anyone showing up here on auto fills because I don't use enough gas. I told her I would just call and she even confirmed saying that makes total sense...yet Kelly said she couldn't find any calls of mine that confirmed this(lie). She then proceeded to tell me that I should feel lucky that I had a gas delivery because their normal protocol is not to fill tanks unless a customer needs a minimum of 200 gallons. I responded with, why should I feel lucky when I didn't want, need, or request the gas? When I told the driver no multiple times and he did not listen, and you've doubled your rates...but I should feel lucky? Then she proceeded to lie and say that the driver had already filled the tank with the 20% gas when I finally said something...Kelly, I have cameras all over my property. Cameras with sound that clearly have out communication and conversation on there. Cameras that showed your driver pulling up to my property and making sure no one was home before illegally entering my gate and locking the tank out. One day after I spoke to you on the phone staying I have animals and I do not want anyone coming on to my property first without telling me. Warning you now, definitely stay away!! Everywhere else has lower rates anyway. It's a rip. read more

We had them come a week ago and paid $600 and a week later they show up and charge us another $300... they claim they like to make sure customers have propane when its cold but how the heck can they not even knock on the door or call to make sure we want propane!? Suburban is typical case of lack of regulatory oversight in semi rural area. I've been a customer for 11 years and it's a pretty terribly run utility company- but it's a perfect fit for Sussex County expectations and takes advantage of the majority without people even knowing. Suburban overcharges the prevailing price per gallon of propane by about $0.75 to $1.00, which is significant when your buying hundreds of gallons per season. Even when gas and propane was $2.00 a gallon, Suburban was able to charge $3.25, which was higher than the other fuel companies in Sussex County. Lots of delivery fees and safety fees every time fuel is delivered, which isn't even spelled out in their T's and C's you sign every year. They don't know how to calculate your usage and actually try to sell you less so that what you actually need so when you do go over your contract amount, they can charge you the full market rate of fuel for the quantity over that contracted amount. (Yeah, they are somehow allowed to deliver more than what you physically signed up for). I told them to increase my quantity a bit to avoid this from happening. They won't sell you their tank, so you can only change out the tank (to go with a different company) which is going to cost you $0.91 per gallon to have backpumped. So for your $3 gallon you paid them for that gallon you now own, you are only getting refunded $2.09 per gallon when you sell it back. Only in Sussex County! The only good thing I can say about them- they do keep track of the cold snaps and make sure to deliver (if your due) a few days before the less than 20 F weather happens, but that's not rocket science and I'm sure all the propane/fuel companies do the same thing. Make sure to do the budget plan, but keep track of how you have left- tell them not to deliver more than what's contracted. All these crappy companies up here, like Suburban- I'm going to continue letting everyone know exactly how they are run and operate via social media. read more

Company Price gouges and really seems like they don't wanna be in the propane business. 4 years now I've been on energy assistance. I pay what I'm able and try not to use all of the assistance. But when on energy assistance they legally cannot shut your propane off in the winter months. Well today is the 4th time in 4 years they knocked on my door and told me I had to pay or they were shutting me off. I told them I was on energy assistance but it didn't matter. So what little money I had that I was starting to get ahead is now shot. Company is really lousy. If you have the option go with someone else. read more

As a follow up to my last post. I wanted to be fair and check back in a year. So far, nothing has improved. There are no predictable delivery dates, they just sort of "show up" with no notice or regularity. Then their "billing" is a guy hanging the bill on your front door handle as he's leaving. The bill sometimes doesn't get hung on the door and you never knew they were there, but they charge you late fees anyway. You have to randomly check your account just to make sure and pray you didn't miss it. They have raised the cost of propane $1 per gallon in 9 months, just in time for the hard winter temps. So far, in 3 months, I've paid over $1,000 to Suburban. There is no rhyme or reason to how much you pay per gallon and no notice of increased prices. Needless to say, I'm willing to pay thousands to bring Elizabethtown Gas to my house. read more

Worst customer service. I sign up for a continued contract service. You would think that you pay the little extra and have a monthly plan so you'd be taken care of a little bit. Nope They sent a "tech" out to check for leaks. He's finds a leak. No big deal he runs a temp line and checks again. Claims he finds a second leak but can't find it. Spends 3 hours walking around my house spraying this pink soap everywhere then says i have to call a plumber to fix it. So i did He took all of 3 mins and a bottle of windex and solves the issue. Then hi dig up the line and removed the old one quickly give this company the easiest install ever. My guy $100 and did most of the work. These people $439 or something like that and tell me that's only bill 1 of 2. And im not talking about the $53 inspection fee or the 300 something a month for propane. Oh that's a separate lol. Poor customer service. They filled my 2 tanks and then charged me for non usage. Was not told this when we first signed up. I want to get them out yet they will charge for the removal of the tanks plus the propane I just filled up. Too bad 0 or neg. stars aren't an option. This company's billing and business practices are nothing short of atrocious. Let's start with the fact we just bought a home and were strong armed into using Suburban. (tricked is more like it at closing). Next, we find we have no meter and no way to know what we had, have, or are getting. When questioned, we got a song and a dance why it can't be fixed. Tank needs to be pumped at our expense! Tank is over 25-30 years old! Propane delivered last day in April. Invoice came last day in May. Harassment started just a week or so after the statement/invoice! Not just one 'polite' reminder or anything like that, but past due, past due, past due, phone calls, and now a threading shutoff notice? You come on my property and see what happens Suburban! I'm not about to put up with this kind of company. My bad for paying a bill 17 days late from invoice statement date. Your bad for bully collection practices! I don't need you or your famously horrific business practices. Seeking to buy my propane elsewhere, even if it costs more to switch. You don't deserve a dime of my money or anyone else! Should be federal regulations on essential utility services. Yet, there are none. Seems the propane business is rogue and no one cares but those who have to tolerate their endless abuse and being at their mercy with zero recourse! We used Suburban for both oil (heat the house) and propane (gas stove). Would NEVER use them again or recommend them. Suburban Propane is really ruining their own reputation in Sussex County. I had similar situation to Mike A's review. Was threatened by Suburban to get paid. Had them fill the oil tank in the basement. Because they weren't paid on time, they came and took the propane tank from the driveway. And that was the end of Suburban Propane for us. They really deserve to go out of business because of their extremely high prices, their bullying tactics and unwillingness to work with their customers. There are so many other oil companies to choose from at much lower prices. I hope Yelp readers take these reviews seriously or they will learn the hard way. read more

I don't know when the bad reviews regarding the Chester location were written, but November 2013 we were charged $2.40 a gallon with no negotiation. We just switched from a different company with terrible customer service. After seeing the clean, professional install with Suburban, I regret staying with the old company for as long as we did. Words cannot express how horrible this company is!!! Changed to natural gas recently, THANK GOD, and when we went to the office to finalize and arrange our tank pick up, we were told that not only will they charge us for the tank pick up but they are going to charge us for the remaining propane in the tank!!! Don't know how they stay in business! I totally recommend Fairclough Propane! When we moved, they removed our tanks at no charge and they are right across the street from these crooks. We are renters now, which is why we were stuck with them. Fairclough all the way!!!! Pass it along! read more
