As far as Subway goes, it was pretty good . Not skimpy with toppings like some other locations. Good place to eat in Walsenburg, CO.

I stopped here for a quick on the go doppio one early morning on the way from Taos to get home in…read moreDenver. Convenient location (easy access on the Main Street). Once you get what you need, you ca be off to your destination in the matter of a few to several minutes as it's close to I-25. The young lady upfront who assisted me was very welcoming and sweet. Her pleasantness was probably the best thing I got out of the visit. As I stated, what I needed was an iced doppio and possibly a little bite to eat. Whereas they may make great craft beverages, the selection of the pastries was very limited. I wanted something savory but there was literally nothing for me to choose out of what they had (they all looked not-so-fresh sweet pastries. Not sure if they rotate the baked goods.) The shop is kind of cute inside. And it's not only a coffee shop but also a souvenir shop (or specialty retail shop to be exact.) I didn't bother to look at any of the retail items as I was in a hurry to get home. I read others' reviews and one of them said that the shop doesn't have any tables/chairs to sit down and sip your beverage. It's true; I don't remember seeing any. The same person went onto say that they don't have wifi so no work on your laptop is an option. In all technicality, this is a place to shop for retail stuff and grab a cup of coffee and off you go type place. If that still suits you then stop here.

The restaurant is quite large and was quite empty, except for one table in the center. I noticed post cards for sale, on top of the jewlery case. Next to the lunch counter. Interesting. We sat down and the waiter, who was very young and bubbly, brought us water and took our order: Two Cheeseburger Deluxes. It took forever to get those burgers. We were enjoying each other's company so we didn't really mind, but the wait was noticeable. What was really annoying was the one other table in the restaurant... one guy just talked and talked and talked very LOUDLY about all his buddies in town. Incessantly talked for the entire time we were there. Not the restaurant's fault, but super distracting. When our burgers finally arrived, we ate them quickly. They were ok, nothing special. We just wanted to get out. The waiter, we suspect might have been the owner's son because he seemed quite young. He was really kind and personable. Very pleasant young man! The other loud dude, he gotta go!

We were on our way back from a road trip and just typed in "local restaurants" and guess what popped up!?!? We are so glad! We walked in and immediately noticed the mercantile next to it, the decor, and the historical building feel. We were told to sit wherever, and ordered some appetizers and drinks right away. Service was not fast per se, it can only be described as laid back and not rushed. We popped over to the mercantile while we waited and fell in love with the place. If we weren't in a bit of a rush to get home we may have stayed and shopped a bit. Such a charming place with very friendly employees. We had the privilege to meet the chef, Candace, who couldn't have been more gracious. She showed us around the space, including the "safe room" (it used to be a bank and a post office, among other things) with a vault as the door. We also saw the patio outside/ event space. She said they hold events there and it looked charming. We ordered brussels sprouts and the cheese sticks for our appetizers, and I wouldn't call them fancy or unique, but they were good and did the job. For our entrées, we ordered the quinoa salad and the mac & cheese with added chicken. Both were done very well and we left satisfied. We will be back!
