When we saw the busy parking lot - we knew it would be good! It was full of locals, & travelers. We enjoyed our lunch break - tacos, chicken strips with gravy & fries, and a BLT. All were fresh & tasty. The BLT was SO good! We couldn't resist the fresh fried pies! The apple and strawberry were a perfect sweet topper! Yum but not too big - just right. Traveling through the area and decided to stop because of yelp reviews. Place has been here for a long time. Kind of a dive, but the food is pure nostalgia! Everything we ordered was great! Done the old way with nothing premade. I had the fish and chips. Home cut fries and large pieces of fish. Choice of Cole slaw or potato salad. I had the potato salad which was also made here. Old fashioned home style goodness. Been coming here for over 30 years. Ski trips, honeymoon, treks home, and visits to see our son at the Air Force Academy all included stops at the red-roofed diner on the edge of Walsenburg. Italian sausage sandwiches a MUST. Green chile anything is top notch. Diner team both in and out of kitchen are long-term locals who treat you like family. If you're lucky you'll get a chance to meet George. Monster sized, freshly prepared hamburgers with delightful crispy edges from the flat top served on a fluffy bun, covered by a hefty slice of ripe tomato and crunchy lettuce. Fries are separate but well worth the few dollars because they are hand cut fresh and so crispy outside with creamy centers. Sandwiches are also great and do come with a side of fries. The Patty melt had just the right amount of crispy bread to cheese and meat ratio and was deliciousness edge to edge. I had one of the best small town cheese burger and fries here and it brough back all my memories of growing up in a small town. No frozen Cisco fries or pre made, frozen Cisco burger patties here. The burger had that slight crisp flat grilled taste and crunch. The fries were fresh and hand cut and really tasted like it. Pretty much what you expect for a roadside diner except the food was quite good! Ambiance is old timey but clean. Staff was kind and attentive. A classic breakfast joint (they do lunch as well lol, but we've only ever stopped here for breakfast). The prices were amazing as well! I think my jaw dropped at one point from shock and happiness. This is the 2nd time we have eaten at George's in our travels south. Never a disappointment! I had a Patty Melt and my husband had the Ribeye steak sandwich. We split a basket of fries, they were hand cut (Real Potatoes!) came hot and delicious .everything was exceptional! The service was excellent and the restaurant was very clean. Great little place to go for lunch on the road. Very close to the interstate and easy to find. We went at 11 and most seats were full already. I ordered a cheeseburger and fries while my husband ordered the chile burger with fries. I absolutely LOVE when restaurants use flat top grills for burgers because the char on them is delicious and this was no exception! Definitely fresh and perfectly cooked as were the hand cut fries. I sprinkled some salt on them but otherwise they were very yummy! As a side note, my husband said the coffee was good as well. Very clean restaurant full of nice employees and locals! read more

Visiting family who are living near Walsenburg and this is the best place we ate at in the area. Basic fare type stuff that was really good. We all had burgers and fries. Burgers were hot and good, with fresh vegetables, the hand cut fresh fries were some of the best I've had anywhere. Wish there was more to say, place was clean, service was quick and friendly. I have been going there since it first opened in 1977. George Amedei started it up. He really knew what he was doing when he created this diner! Tremendous comfort food for breakfast and lunch. George worked with a local butcher to create the best patty sausage I have ever tasted. Same butcher does the ground beef. The best hamburger on the planet, in my opinion. Great Green Chile for the Mexican dishes, too! George (RIP) passed it on to his son, who passed it on to another gentleman who has kept it original and authentic. Never had a bad meal there in almost half a century. Yeah, you may have to wait a while for a table, but it is more than worth the wait! read more

A must stop We live 44 miles away but whenever we travel south we go to Georges. We sat next to an older pair of couples. I noticed the guys were having a bowl of red chili and a hamburger. Since we are never around for lunch and the menu said "lunch served all day" I told the wait lady "I'll have what he is having". Since it was 9:30 the guy who I pointed to said "It's the breakfast of champions". The red chili was a tad soupy and spicy but very good. My family has always had a running joke that George's is never open. Driving through Walsenburg happens a couple of times a year as we head to New Mexico from Colorado to visit the grandparents. Most of the time we see George's, it's with an abandoned parking lot and locked door. But this time around it was open and that meant we had to stop in for our hamburger and green chile fix. Unfortunately, we weren't the only ones happy that this place was serving up food. We waited in line to order and then had to linger and wait for a table to open up. This is the kind of place where the locals might be favored before the out-of-towners and that's how one family snagged an open booth before we did. Even so, we were eventually seated and served our food. Everyone enjoyed their meals from my dad's hamburger and my bowl of green chile to my brother's chile cheese fries and my mom's chicken strip basket. I must say we all laughed when her "side salad" came and it turned out being a little underwhelming. Think a chicken enchilada, minus the chicken enchilada (aka shredded lettuce with some diced tomato and a baby carrot on the side for show). This is the kind of place that does what they do well and that's burgers, chile, and other fried things. Stick with those, and you can't go wrong! So if you're driving through town and you see George's parking lot is full, go in and join the crowd! You never know when the opportunity will present itself again! read more

Our last stop before home. And thank god we made it. They normally close at 3 on a Saturday and we made it a 2:30. So, close call! But was greeted right away and seated. I ended up with a chili cheese dog which was good. Probably not a great choice since I was still about 2 hrs plus away from Thornton (beans..) and there was definitely leftovers for dinner for that night. The chili wasn't to spicy just the right kick and it was enough to cover my fries as well (definitely an added bonus) and fried you can tell was hand cut as well. I never knew about this place until I was randomly looking on maps to see where we can sit and eat. I personally rather go to an ma and pop shop. But I do apologize about my 5 yr old. She wasn't having it and it was a long car ride at this point (2k miles. We drove from Orlando and home is Thornton). Really good food, fast. That's what you can expect from George's. I had the green chili cheeseburger (double), and it was absolutely wonderful! The fries are hand cut and taste like... guess what?... potatoes! Who would have thought? :) The green chili might be the best in Walsenburg, maybe... it's good, that much is true. Don't know what Lee S. had that day, but mine was flavorful, spicy (but not too), full of meat and veggies, and just flat out tasty. The toppings (lettuce, tomato, onion) really added a great fresh crispy cool dimension to the dish. I'd get this again in a heartbeat. Didn't have room for dessert, though I want to go back and try the pie. I hear it's stellar. The chili cheeseburger was so filling, though, definitely didn't need anything to go with it! read more
