Got the job done in an efficient manner. Ambiance: Parking in the front and back of the building. There's a large area where you can see people working and then a separate one with a changing room. You change into what you want altered and then they'll come and assess what needs to be done. They're pretty upfront with prices and you can opt-in/out of stuff. Service: So sweet and friendly. I came in with a large bridesmaid dress and they were truthful about telling me to get a new one as even with alterations, it wouldn't look as good. I've had multiple pairs of jeans that I've been putting off getting tailored for months now, and I finally stopped by Sue's Alterations to get them tailored to fit my short legs. They were super friendly and the service was quick. I stopped by last week and my order was available for pick up a week later. I kept the original hems of the jeans which is about double the cost of getting rid of the original hem, but I personally liked the look of the original hems better. I'll definitely keep going here for all of my alteration needs! You can book appointments online, and they were booked out pretty far in advance for larger projects. I believe for larger tailoring jobs, like wedding dresses/gowns they require more lead up time and appointment setting, but since I had a simple fix of hemming, I was able to walk in, try the jeans on to get them hemmed, and pick them up a week later. If you have a smaller project, I would suggest you call ahead and see if you're able to walk in. It took me maybe 10 minutes to walk in, try the jeans I was getting tailored on, and pay. They texted me when they were done and pick up was easy as well. read more

The first time I used Sue's alterations she was so warm and graciousness, that her perfection of work was secondary. Her shop was the size of a small one bedroom's apartments closet. I needed my daughters prom dress right away and they got it done. My second five star review first for Sue's alterations was when my son had grown out of his Cotillion suit, and we needed to get his pants and arms lengthened again the prefer work was done with assurance and gratitude. Over the years the jobs have always been completed in a timely matter. Her shop has doubled then tripled in size. At her new location across the street from the entrance of Sugarhouse Park, she has the entire first floor. I ordered some pants from Abercrombie that I want to wear for Mother's Day but they only had my size in long and they were way too long. I just took them to Sue's and they will have them ready for me Saturday! Only 3 days away! I was in tired on the pants they marked them I paid and got out in less than 15 minutes! Would leave 0 starts if I could! I went in the have a gown altered. I knew it was going to be expensive but they quoted me $785 to have the hem taken up and an inch off of the waist, and cups sewn in (that I brought with me!). I thought this price was too high so I let them know I was going elsewhere. They didn't let me leave until I paid $20 since I didn't have an appointment. There's no sign in their shop that states this. So now my time was wasted and I had to pay $20 for nothing. Poor customer service! read more

I rarely use a seamstress but I have used Sue years ago. She is no longer running her business but Rose is. First, Rose did not get the date correct for me to pick up the dress after I told her that I needed it this Wednesday which is the 14th, she sent me home and called me back to come get it later but I had to leave work for that. Secondly, the dress was not altered correctly it was not added with the correct material that would make the back not be open which is not what I wanted. It's horrible, it's uncomfortable, it's too long. Rose did an absolutely TERRIBLE job! The dress is not only tighter but cannot be worn. Too tight, too uncomfortable. Too long, even though it was measured on the bottom. I am the Mother of the bride and my daughters wedding is this weekend and for $180 not only did I get a dress that was not altered correctly but I got completely ripped off totally taken advantage of and left in tears. Yes, 180.00 for a dress that CANNOT BE WORN 3 days before my daughter's wedding. I have no idea what she did. I am officially panic stricken. I should have let her keep the dress but I paid her anyway. I'm very upset over this and never leave any feedback but I'd like to prevent anyone else from being in a situation such as I was. Sue and her team are incredible! I had my reception dress altered by Sue's Alteration and I'm so pleased with the results. First of all, they are incredibly kind and welcoming. They make excellent recommendations and are upfront and honest with results and pricing. I bought a 2nd dress for my reception out of concern I wouldn't be able to dance in my 1st dress (my ceremony dress) all night long. The dress was a sample dress as I was running out of time to order another dress. The sample was around 2 sizes too large and due to the intricate lace and tulle details, I was worried about how alterations would look. I was also concerned that it would require many appointments to complete the dress. When I returned for my 2nd (and final) fitting the dress was absolutely perfect! I went to them a bunch of times over the years for easy hems, etc. The price was as okay and they did a good job on the easy stuff. I'd sent business their way. The one time it was mildly more complicated to communicate what I wanted, they forgot the complicated part. I politely explained they had forgotten part of it (included in the original quoted price). From there, after arguing with me for a while and immediately blaming me saying they did what I said, they eventually admitted and agreed to correct it without any real apology or anything. I was talking to the person who quoted me so face to face I think it was hard for her to pretend she didn't remember when I reminded her of the details of the conversation we had. But then I waited weeks to get started on the fix. They said they'd do it right away and I was waiting to hear from them it was done. Next thing, they reached out again via text trying to blame me and "clarify" before getting started on it. They hadn't started the fix. I think they wanted more money to fix it and if I took the blame for the "miscommunication" they could ask for it. After weeks and trying to discuss it, I took my paid for item as it was and went elsewhere. Not worth it to work with people who won't admit a mistake and correct it. Also, not sure I'd trust them with more complicated tasks. That was the only time I tried anything other than really easy hems and the like. read more

Having never needed alterations to any clothing in the past (pretty standard sizes thru my life) breast cancer and double mastectomy changed all that. NOTHING fits. Not a big deal. I'm retired now. fast forward to my son now getting married. it is a formal wedding. Finding something appropriate has been extremely difficult. after multiple tries, ended up buying a dress that was plain and ill fitting. I went to Sue's hoping for a consultation about how to "buge" it up, besides just taking it in. they were so wonderful and very creative. Everything we could do to make it work was done and it is so much better now I will be pleased to wear it. TO THE FOLKS ABOVE COMPLAINING: All alterations are expensive. it has always been that way as I understand from my sisters. 'It is the end product that matters, and we do what we can afford. This is very clearly a hard working family with high standards. Sue herself is very skilled and very pleasant, as is their receptionist, who I believe is Sues daughter. IMO it is inappropriate to accuse a business of being dishonest without proof. But then, that seems to be the mentality in this country lately. Sue, your business rocks! Have used sues alterations for a few years and truly think they are worthy of 5 stars! Their work is always flawless, done in time, and at reasonable prices. They altered my second outfit for my wedding which was a lace jumpsuit with cutouts and was a couple sizes too big. It turned phenomenal. I had them alter another jumpsuit for another wedding I was a guest at. The jumpsuit had a deep v neck that I asked they make less deep, which they did beautifully! However, I didn't like the way it it looked on me, so the day before the wedding I called and they fixed it that day!!! Most recently, I've had them after another dress (that I requested be turned around in 2 days!) and with the extra material, she made me a matching mask. My husband dropped off his down stuffed Patagonia jacket that had a couple holes in it, and they stitched it up and gave him a holiday lint roller as a gift! The point is, they do EXCELLENT work, in a timely manner and are so thoughtful. Every experience I've had with them has been above and beyond. read more

I was very stressed because my dress was delayed 2 weeks (from the bridal shop) and I needed to rush my alterations. I don't like to leave a bad review for a small business, but I think it is important other brides know my story. I took my wedding dress in to Sue's. When she pinned it she immediatly pulled it up at the shoulders. As she was pinning my dress it wasn't looking right. Sue then patted my stomach and told me I was too big. She was trying to pin the back and hips differnetly, but they just kept bunching and wrinkeling. She again touched my stomach and told me I was too big. I am not a big woman, I am 5'3 140lbs. She pinned it at one hip, and I again told her I don't think it looks right because it was all bunched in the hips and back. She told me to put a veil on and no one would notice. I told her I wasn't planning to wear a veil. She then pinned the hip differntly. She said she wouldn't do the other hip, but if I wanted her to it would be $180 per hip. I then asked her how much the whole thing would be and she said $680. She asked me when I needed it by. We had already agreed to around July 6 before I came in, but then she told me that wasn't enough time. At this point I was trying not to cry. I was worried would I need a new dress, should I have her do this dress, should I pay that much. I left the store to think about it. I called the maker of my dress who is based in SLC and got the number for another local tailor. The other tailor began pinning it by pulling it down. She told me it absolutely wasn'y my body or because I was too big in the stomach. The other tailor made my dress alterations absolutely beautifully and for half the price. I am not overweight, but like many women struggle with body image issues. For any women who may be batteling your own body image issues, especially around your wedding, I highly recommend skipping Sues. I am sorry to leave a bad review for a small business, but that was unacceptable. It was clearly the lack of skill, willingness, or time to do the right job and then it got turned on my body size. Being told to just cover the lumps with a veil is not how you alter a dress. There are other experts who will take care of you with joy and willingness, who will respect your body, for a much lower price. read more

Do not use Sue's for your wedding gown!! She came recommended so I went with her. Not only are her prices obscene, but she left my dress lumpy. She didn't smooth the bodice or the lace. She left random seams showing. She also said she couldn't hem my dress which is insane. And she rushed the whole process. Thank you so much to everyone at Sue's Alteration. I had a suit that I needed tailored for my wedding and due to a crazy travel schedule leading into the wedding, I needed it back in just a few days. The alterations were not huge, but they made all of the difference and they got me my suit right on time. I came in only wanting to have the pants tapered. They had me try on the suit jacket and recommended taking in the back just a little so it would be more fitted. I was reluctant but she told me it would look much better. I took in 3 pairs of pants for hem and alteration, and a leather duffle bag with a double zipper that needed to be replaced. They quoted me just over $400 for everything ($250 for bag)! I picked up the duffle bag today and noticed the there's only one functioning zipper on the bag and the teeth could have issues because it doesn't zip smoothly either. I called back and the girl said she mentioned there would only be one zipper---she DID NOT MENTION this at all, otherwise I would have taken the bag elsewhere or got another quote......Refer to Kathy A.'s review on 3/3....similar situation with being untruthful. There is something comforting about knowing that you have a shop that does serious alterations in your back pocket and Sue's is that place. I first did business here when I had a very expensive Dig Me winter coat that cost a grand at least and the zipper went kaput. I went to two places in Park City. One wouldn't touch it and one said it would cost a hun to extract the entire zipper and replace it. On a wing and a prayer, I went to Sue's and she said sure, she could fix it. She dug around in her secret magic zipper drawer and found the right part and in five minutes my jacket was fixed. Twenty bucks. Larry was flabbergasted. I have been a loyal customer since. They alter my pants, suits and Mrs. Larry's lady stuff. As an aside, I have, I think five bespoke Suits by Stephen Kempson in New Your which take six months and four fittings to complete and which fit Larry's unusual bod perfectly. Now that Larry is no longer in the corporate world, he doesn't need that fastidious attention to detail and I certainly did not expect such in Salt Lake City, but this is what Sue and her family provide. I liked that the workers were very nice and genuinely wanted to help and give advice on alterations. I needed a bridesmaid dress to be made shorter and it was around $50. I'm not sure how that compares to others in the business and I never go to get alterations but it turned out great and they were able to do it in less than four days so I count it as a win!
