For a special birthday, I wanted to order a stunning cake. I am a huge cake lover, and I have had my share of disappointments. I actually wanted to bake one, but my decorating skills are not that advanced! I was intrigued by the good reviews of Sugar Peony, and knowing chestnuts are a family favorite, I went with the 6" French Chestnut cake. I placed the order over the phone with Linda (48 hours is required) and she assured me it would be fresh. I purchased a Groupon for a 6" cake at $28.80 and redeemed it with no problems. It seems the majority of people use a Groupon to purchase the cakes or macarons. I personally could not see myself paying the regular price of $58 + tax, so it was a good deal. I arrived just when the boutique was opening at 12 noon and met with Linda. She explained how she used fresh chestnuts and I was quite surprised because the majority of cakes, even from high-end patisseries uses chestnut puree. Linda said the puree would make the cake too sweet, so I was excited to taste it! The cake was fresh, moist and decorated beautifully. We are not fans of super sweet desserts, so if you are looking for a cake that is very low on the sweetness scale, these types of cakes are perfect. While the chestnut flavor was not predominant, the caramel flavored Callebaut "crispearls" added a nice textural crunch. The other flavors of cakes may be interesting to try next time. read more

This is a tiny shop on the third floor of an all but deserted mall, but it is actually the cutest place! From the sign in large letters outside, to the displays of macaroons by the counter, to the brightly painted interior, it is literally like a shining beacon in the middle of nowhere. The owner herself is also such a lovely lady - I could tell by her patience when I was placing my order (telling me all about the cake flavours, the ingredients, when and how to pick up, etc.) how dedicated she is to what she does. And it clearly showed in the dessert itself. I first chanced upon this store on Yelp, which mentioned a Groupon that offered a heavily discounted price - so of course I had to look into it. Using that (about 50% off) coupon, I ordered a chocolate élysée cake for Mother's Day. The cake came out even more beautifully than I expected, and was an absolute delight to eat. The varying layers of chocolate - the slightly bitter frosting, the richly sweet inside, the chocolate pieces decorating the top and sides - all blended perfectly, as did the textures, smooth and velvety throughout until you get to the wonderfully crunchy bottom. It was a feast for our eyes, too, as my mom commented that it was almost a pity to cut the cake apart - and the packaging is probably one of the prettiest I've seen (or maybe I just like the pink colour. Lol). Why 4 stars (instead of 5)? Well, I did come here on a Groupon...and the original price of $58 for a 6 inch cake is just WAY too much. Sugar Peony's cakes look stunning and seem to have good variety, but unfortunately I didn't have any of those so can't comment. This 3 star rating is therefore solely for the macarons, which were really hit-and-miss. The "hit" part: - Really unique and interesting flavours like ube coconut (my favourite flavour of the bunch), french moka cafe, coco pandan, birthday cake, and (the ever-polarizing) durian - Cute "character" macarons (like Winnie the Pooh and Hello Kitty) - The ube coconut macaron was exquisitely done: crunchy outer shell that just melted as you bite into it, really smooth cream with just the right amount to taste the unique coconut flavour The "miss" part: - Lack of consistency with the macarons, with many of them having an overly chewy exterior and a surprisingly "hard" cream filling (out of the 12 we got, 9 were like this) - Got a deal through Groupon - would have been expensive if I hadn't Overall, I'd go hereto get cute and pretty macarons with pretty unique flavours, but would look elsewhere if I were prioritizing the taste. read more

TLDR: Delicious cakes! You will not regret! This was one of the best cakes I've ever had! My sister bought a groupon voucher, which was $36 for a 6" cake. I highly recommend finding this voucher online as their cakes can be very pricey ($60 for 6"). The cake was phenomenal. You can really tell that the pâtissier took her time to construct the cake. We ordered the Chocolate Élysée. The cake had many layers, containing a bunch of elements (dark chocolate moose, chocolate crunch, vanilla cake, chocolate glaze, chocolate cake, gold flakes), which were presented very well when cut through. The cake wasn't too sweet either, it was just right! They also have a website where you can find a bunch of unique cakes available: durian chocolate, jasmine, ube coconut, French lavender, etc.! read more

I rarely go to Oriental Mall, but I came here because I had a groupon for their macarons. From past experiences, the places that offer groupons aren't usually the best, but this place blew my mind! They have a huge variety of macarons with many unique flavours like durian and black sesame. The owner is super friendly and patient! The macarons were very crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. The fillings were also very good! The packaging is also super cute and it comes with a paper with all the flavours they had and the best before date. Perfect for gifting! Only problem - it's kinda hard to differentiate which macaron is which flavour when you get home because a lot of them are the same colour with tiny differences. I accidental discovered Sugar Peony while waiting for my husband to get his haircut across the street. This small boutique bakery is definitely a hidden gem. Literally hidden on the third level of the Oriental Centre amongst a swarm of immigration consulting offices. I was pleasantly surprised by the numerous accolades and awards proudly displayed ion the store walk a long list of achievements that is also mentioned on their website. They also have a beautiful display of sample cakes from very classy to contemporary/modern and fun designs. They specialize in wedding cakes and other celebratory cakes and my one true love, French Macarons! This is what caught my eye. The little delicate round delights and I had no choice but to purchase 1/2 dozen (Green tea, pistachio, tiramisu, mocha, strawberry and chocolate). At first bite, it had the perfect texture of the expected crispy shell and fresh balance of the perfect buttercream sweetness. The macarons are priced at $2.25 each, but if you happen to snag a Groupon deal for a dozen, it brings it down to about $1.83 a piece, which is a great deal in comparison to most macarons sold in the city. read more

So I came here with a groupon for macarons, I got 24 for $36 ($1.50 per macaron). This was such a good deal and the lady here was super nice. She was so patient and helpful. The packaging came in a nice gift bag with a sticker, 6 macarons were packaged to a box and it had this interesting information sheet in the bag (see the pic I uploaded). Their flavour selection is quite wide, as we ordered the flavours she took them out of the fridge (not the display case, which was fine). The most unique flavours I found were Almond Tea Rose and Black Sesame. I attached a pic with all the flavours, she doesn't have all of them at once it switches. Quality wise they are surprisingly close to nadege and butter ave.. not exactly the same but for the price your getting a lot. The macaron was a bit chewier but still fresh and the filling was good. I think the best flavours were the classics like salted caramel and chocolate. read more

This place is located on the third floor of this mini-mall. Its a super tiny shop that allows you to take 1 or 2 steps past the threshold and put in your order. Lots of cool creative flavours are available The worker was very very friendly. No diss to Chinese people, but often if you're not Chinese the salespeople at Chinese shops aren't very nice, but this woman was very very kind and friendly. We bought a Groupon and got good service. They're located on level 3 of Oriental mall. I wasn't expecting much in terms of quality due to the location, but I had a Groupon to use. I've tried their cakes and macarons - both quite delicious. I've been back many times since then. The customer service has been phenomenal each and every time. All their items vary day-to-day, so what they stock one day may not be there the next. If you're looking for something specific, call them in the morning and ask them to put it aside for you (they sometimes do this, depending on how soon you can pick it up). That's what I did for a cake. Usually you're supposed to let them know ahead of time, but I called in a few hours before closing and she was able to save me one. The cakes are small for the price, but they're very tasty. They come in different flavours such as variations of chocolate or fruit (i.e. mango). However, my favourite is the macarons. In terms of Scarborough, there aren't many places that sell quality macarons, especially in so many flavours! She stocks at least over 10 macaron flavours in a day. They're just the way I love them - crispy exterior and a chewy center. She has some on display, but takes them from the fridge. They are a decent size, which is why I can justify the price. She tells you to leave them out for an hour and a half before eating since they're frozen. They're wrapped up in a cute pink and lilac box with their logo and ready to serve up or gift to your favourite peeps! read more

Small little bakery on the 3rd floor of Oriental Centre. It's located on the left side if you go up from the elevator, quite difficult to find if you don't look closely. I was hoping to find decent macarons in the Scarborough area, which seems to be a rare thing so it was nice to finally have a go-to. Would definitely recommend getting the Groupon for this. Regular price is $15 for half a dozen and $30 for one dozen. I paid $26 for a dozen tax included. Sometime they have it at $22/dozen on Groupon too! I had originally visited Sugar Peony to (hopefully) get a small last-minute cake for my friend's birthday, but you have to pre-order because they are sent to them each day or something. I didn't really want to leave empty handed so I got a half dozen macarons in all different flavours. Unfortunately, not only have I had better for the price ($2.50 per macaron or $15 for 6), I've experienced better handling of delicate overpriced confectionery at every other place I've ever been to. In hindsight I really should have just not bought any or walked away while the guy was putting them in the box. The macarons were cute, but they were not that special. The only memorable one was the vanilla chocolate hazelnut one, which the guy said tasted like a Ferrero Rocher and it did. This is not why they are getting a one star though. The dude was on his laptop and touching his face before he got my macarons. He did not wash his hands or put on gloves before opening the fridge, (where they were not covered) to take out/pick the macaron flavours I was asking for--- with his bare hands. I thought they would get them with tongs from the front where they were displayed. Nope. I should have just walked away without getting them or at least asked him to put on gloves and get me new ones, but I couldn't get the words out. After seeing this, I obviously did not give them to my friend. I'm pretty sure the only reason why they passed health inspections is because very few people actually go there so they never have to provide service for anyone while they are being inspected. The dude didn't seem like he knew what he was doing either. I didn't get a receipt or anything. It felt like a really shady transaction. I didn't want to throw $15 away, so I ate them anyway. It obviously didn't kill me but I will definitely not be coming back here. If you're going to pretend to be a boutique, at least know how to properly handle food. Gross. read more

The Best Wedding Cakes in the city. I originally sampled them at a bridal show and was amazed by their designs, taste, experienced Chefs and of course the price. When we went in for our consultation, our experience continued. We were unsure of a design, so the Chefs actually sat with me and built a design based on my tastes, my dress and our wedding colours that was absolutely perfect.So many of our guests commented on how delicious the cake was (Jasmine). The Peony flowers were so detailed that most people actually thought they were real! Even in pictures, the cake continues to look so real.
