The purpose of my visit was to redeem my birthday reward, valued at $7.50, so I only paid $1.70 out of pocket. Naturally, I chose my cake based on the flavor signs, though the beautiful presentation made it tempting to pick with my eyes instead. I selected the one that looked like a bathtub with a rubber duck, believing it was the malted chocolate and salted caramel flavor. Later, I checked their website and discovered the signs had been misplaced. What I actually got was the "Lucky Duck", a cake made with a hand-painted white chocolate ducky, lemon curd, pistachio cream, and almond sponge. Fortunately, those are still flavors I enjoy. Visually, it was a showstopper, but the flavor and texture didn't quite deliver. The overall taste was muted and lacked distinction, while the texture was uniformly soft, offering minimal contrast aside from a few small crunchy toppings. But I was pleasantly surprised after entering into Daan Ga's new store and the creativity of cakes available here. Each slice of cake has distinct layers that is different texturally or taste-wise. And yet, the layers harmoniously works together with each bite. There's a wide variety of cakes to choose from, including macaroons, cookies, muffins and ice cream. We tried a slice of the Peach Garden (white peach gelee, yellow peach mousse, peach jam, osmathua jelly, almond crunch base -$7) and the Gold Thorn (Durian puree, durian mousse, vanilla chiffon, cheese cream -$7). I love Daan Go and placed a pick-up order for here for the first time, as I had only visited their Chinatown location before. This location was way more efficient and organized than my experience with the Chinatown shop, although that's not to say the other location was bad. I've just had to wait for orders there before and at this location, they found my order right away and brought it out to me all set to go. I ordered macaron (I always do because they are SO GOOD), a slice of the 3:15 cake, a Unicorn cookie, and a S'mores cookie. The 3:15 cake is my favorite of theirs that I've tried. If you like caramel flavors, you should definitely check it out. The cookies were fun and also yummy. Everything was well worth it. Glad they opened one in York region because it's a far drive to Scarborough. We were lucky to be able to get in within 5 minutes because there's usually 10+ people in line on weekends. I haven't been to the Scarborough one in awhile but I don't think it was as good as it used to be. Looks like they increased the prices too. The Tira Meow Su was good but the pandan cake had an after taste. I'll probably try the ice cream one day. The viet coffee macaron was still my fav though.. Now 'maybe' "maybe" I was expecting too too much much. I mean cmon master chef winner from 2021? The cakes were a little on the pricey side, but tasted good. We ordered a tiramisu which comes topped with a bear macaron. The tiramisu itself was fairly standard in my opinion, although I did enjoy the small pieces of coffee bean and nuts that they had added. Presentation was cool though. Some improvements that can be made: - if people had already ordered online or via phone, they should be able to pick up their order fairly quickly and not have to spend another 30-45 minutes in line just to pick up their order. One way of solving this is having one staff member ask each person in line what their order number is and verify on the spot and the staff member will fetch the order and bring it to the customer. Saving both time and keeping the customer happy. - inconsistency of packaging. Some customers got the daan Go bag while other customers walked out with a brown bag. The pros: - asian inspired flavours - cute design for macarons - good range of cakes The cons: - price is a bit more than I like given the quality of the designs, which I do find sloppy at times - cake flavours are subtle, but did have cakes, like the cactus one that had a savoury note even though it was chocolate, or thick hard buttercream that was unpleasant I would say, their macarons deserve a good 4/5 for flavour, but if you do ask for my opinion, I think their design while cute is a bit sloppy compared to many home bakers out there in the GTA. As for their cakes, I appreciate chef bringing these designs in, but I find them to be sloppy as their edges are not clean and the drawn faces can be poorly defined. For a masterchef title, I do believe it can be better quality. Overall an average bakery with nothing too out of the ordinary. I recently tried the Mount Blanc cake from here. I have previously bought celebration pig, and macaron tower from here. Although these cakes are not cheap, they are beautifully made and delicious. Picking up is always very prompt and efficient. They make sure you are happy with the cake before closing up the box and sending you on your way. I love the Asian flavours of their desserts. They appeal even to my parents who are much more familiar with the HK style fruit cakes with fresh cream (not my thing). Nothing is overly sweet or rich. Walked into the Richmond Hill store and was a bit surprised when the staff quickly packed my durian cake without showing it to me. I asked to see it and some of the durian dusting on the top of the cake came off. The staff said to me that everything gets shipped from the Scarborough store and that the powdering is bound to come off. I was a bit disappointed quite frankly...due to the staff potentially trying to hide this information from me. I would have appreciated honesty as opposed to asking to see the cake after its been packed. The durian cake was very good. Full of flavour and has distinct durian chunks.
