I attempted to enter Sugar Room two weekends ago, however, the door attendant said my Jordan's were against company policy. I informed him that my shoes were designer sneakers, not Jordan's. I agree, Jordan's aren't appropriate for night clubs. In fact, I do not own a single pair of Jordan's, only casual and designer sneakers. Fast forward, the door attendant spoke to someone inside and came back to tell me that I could enter for $20 since my shoes were unacceptable. I politely declined. Something compelled me to wait outside of the venue to monitor who the attendant allowed to enter and who he did not. So, a few minutes afterwards, a group of 8 black and brown people attempted to enter but were also turned around because of their athletic sneakers (none were Jordan's). I decided to wait a few more moments and then the predictable happened: A white couple entered. The chick had on flip flops/"sandals", and her guy had on athletic jogging shoes. With no hesitation and without charging a fee, the door attendant allowed the couple to enter. It is also important to note, the company does not have a dress code policy posted on their website, allowing them to implement racist and discriminatory business practices that disproportionally affect black and brown people. I do not recommend at all. If you want us to stop talking about race, you must first stop being racist! Don't just take my word for it, look at several other reviews complaining about the same thing. As far as speakeasies go this one is ok. It is rather small and wants to act like a big club. The place is fairly new and it shows in the attitude and operation of the place (in a negative way). After sitting with friends and dropping about $300 in drinks between us, we were rudely told and I quote, rudely the security says "Hey, you all need to get up as we as this spot reserved and the people are here." I was taken aback thinking he was kidding. I ask, "seriously?", and he said "Is there a problem?". I responded letting him know how rude he was coming across, his response, "Not my problem, I got people waiting you gotta move now". At this point the place was a bit crowded, so I ask as we had been there a couple of hours, "Where are we suppose to sit now?", His response, "I don't know or care you can stand up for all I care." I understand clubs reserve tables and such, but there was not signs on the table saying "Reserved" or any indication or warning of the table being reserved in any way. Again, newby rookie mistake. Also, the fact that when trying to recover my credit card was an issue. I am pretty sure someone on waitstaff was trying to steal it. Initially the waitstaff claim no one had it. Ultimately requested the manager's help who walked away and returned 15 mins later with it, no explanation. So watch what they charge your card and be careful. Go on Friday nights!!! The music is usually R&B from the 90s/early 00's and their drinks are right on point. I love a good lemon drop or espresso martini. I've been with friends and on dates and this place fits the vibe every time. Inside there's a small dance floor but mostly groups gathering to talk, sing dance around the couches. Outside is the same vibe but a bit more relaxed you can hear your date but also hear the good music from inside. Trust me it's a vibe... I was looking forward to trying this place out and I guess we made the mistake of coming in on a Tuesday evening after dinner for a nightcap. In the front, they had an empty dessert bar because Tuesday is the day they don't have their ice cream and pastries, but the bartender said any other day, they would have them! Then you go back to a beautiful and cozy bar with a patio. The vibes were definitely there although we were the only customers. At speakeasies in the past, we had someone come to us and take our order so we sat down for about ten minutes before realizing that no one was going to come and just went to the bar. There were no prices on the menu but we spent $50 for 2 drinks. I ordered the jetsetter, and it was actually super delicious. The spicy boba made it unique to other gin cocktails I've had. My date got the El Jefe, and it was like an old fashioned but tequila... I wouldn't have been able to finish that one but my date did. Not the best! Maybe we would come back for the dessert bar but honestly I wasn't impressed. I don't believe the drinks were worth the price. If you like a chill vibe this is the spot. To get in you'll enter a sweet shop and head to a door on the right. This is a little hidden gem of a sort due to the fact that it's not easily seen. It's tucked away, so you feel the true feeling of a speakeasy. For this I give it five stars! We watched as several groups did this throughout our wait time of about 45 minutes outside. The ambiance is lovely for couples or singles. The lighting is pretty dim, giving it a sexier atmosphere. In the middle of the room, we were able to find a comfy couch to have a few drinks on. Definitely a cozy and more intimate spot. There's not much seating. However, it did not feel overcrowded. A patron did tell us reserved seating is available for a fee. The music is mixed, from different genres. There is no particular feeling you get around the music or the crowd of this little semi-swanky place. It is diverse! The drink menu has plenty of choices, with their own specialty drinks at an expected average price beginning at around 8-9 dollars. For us, being Californians the specialty drinks were priced below what we would normally pay. That was a plus! I had the Death by Espresso, which was a chocolate decadence! I recommend if you love sweets to try this rum based drink. The bar had enough room to be able to order your drink and move about with ease. The bartenders delivered the drinks quick. Our bartender was knowledgeable and friendly. The women's bathroom is a bit tight, not too much mirror space to fix your makeup or stand along the wall to wait for a stall. Came on a Friday evening for happy hour which runs from 5 to 8PM with $8 drinks. This is almost 50% off their usually $15 price and they are still just as good. I was surprised to see it's a speakeasy with a bakery store front facade and a swanky bar behind it. They're are plush couches and chairs and then bar seating which was first come first serve. This place has great speakeasy vibes. I've come here a few times on the weekends and each time has been a good time. They used to have a bakery with delicious treats upon entering, though now I'm not sure what the store front is (I've been there since they changed it, just can't figure out what they offer). Once you enter, the ambience is one of a lounge. Drinks are pricey and batched. With the prices they charge, I wish they'd let me customize it, at least the amount of sweetness, but the few times I've asked they've turned me down. The biggest highlight for me is the live DJs they bring in, usually after 9pm. So far they've brought in some great guys who play great jams and allow for great dancing. Definitely gets crowded later at night. They have an outdoor patio also. They do offer table service, and if someone reserved the table, they understandably will ask you to move. What I found to be poor form, however, is that they will allow others to "outbid" the table. I understand they're running a business, but to displace a party who fairly purchased a table reservation in advance just because someone else is offering to pay more seems rude to me, and suggests to me that they care more about the buck than the experience they're offering. Too bad we were turned away bc one of my friends wore Timberland boots (in 50 degree weather in Houston, a travesty). I've been to this place twice, it's damn near pitch black to see or care ab another's footwear and the music is too loud to converse w/ anyone but I guess this one pair of boots would ruin the business's reputation? Also a specified dress code wasn't established on their website, and my cousin in full-on Chuck Taylors was allowed in but not the common winter boots (Timbs). I absolutely LOVE hidden gems and this spot is LITERALLY "hidden" under your nose in Houston. After entering the tiny dessert store after hours(we visited around 9:30pm), there is a well dressed young man asking for your ID. After that you are then escorted to an unassuming grey door past some toilet tissue stock to another grey door...then boom...welcome to posh life. From the romantic dimmed lights to the plush couches everything screams 1920's glamour mixed with forbidden speakeasy. The drinks were served with a flare of detail and they tasted amazing. I had a "rose colored glasses" a vodka based cocktail and it was delicious. I loved the rose petal for color and a touch of whimsy. The vibe did not read "club" so if you want more action you can visit other places down Washington Ave, but if you want a genuine classy experience, then you must visit Sugar Room. read more

I'm giving them a 1 star only because of their false advertising. When you look at the cocktail menu with pricing, it displays a list of cocktails to include the Jetsetter as being $15, however, when I ordered inside of the main area bar, he the bartender charged me $30 for the Jetsetter. The right thing for me to do would have been to reject the drink but he waited until after he rung up my card to print out the receipt which I discovered that he had charged me $30. Never ever allow them to have your card before they make your drink. Always ask them how much each drink is before ordering. I felt juped and it left a bad taste in my mouth. I will never be returning to this establishment and I'm fortunate that I had budgeted for a night out. But it's just sickening because without being scammed, I would have tipped. Now I wouldn't have tipped a full $15 on a $15 drink but I would have tipped 15-20% of the actual cost of the drink. Don't waist your time coming here. Just go to kung fu or the Sporting Lounge which are within walking distance. The most I can think is the bar tender must have really needed the extra money to have to resort to that sort of thing. Very unsettling and sad. I uploaded a video which shows the bartender briefly so you know to always bring cash and never a card at this establishment.
