If going twice in two nights when visiting from L.A. isn't a testament to a great bar, I don't know what is. I ate at Norigami Tuesday night and it was great as were the cocktails served up at the nextdoor bar called Hidden Bar. On Tuesday, I tried the Thai Chili Ginger Margarita ($13) and it was great, complete with a hunk of candied ginger which I "gingerly" consumed throughout my drink experience...see what I did there? Next, I had the Three Dots and a Daiquiri ($13) with Rum, Lime, Velvet Falernum, All Spice and Pineapple and it was very similar to one of my favorite tiki drinks, the Three Dots and a Dash, complete with 3 luxardo cherries. To finish, I had the absolutely incredible Golden Laurel ($16) with Gin, Italicus Bergamot, House Greek Botanical Bitters and Sea Salt. It is equally beautiful served with a clear bay leaf and delicious. Last night, I was guided by the friendly bartender to try the Et Tu Banana" ($15) with Banana Bourbon, Spiced Pear, Creme de Banane, Campari and Citric Acid. I was a little worried about the cocktail being overly banana-y but it wasn't at all. It was a fantastic drink. For my last call, he recommended the Left Hand ($13) with Bourbon, Campari, Sweet Vermouth and Chocolate Bitters. Again, fantastic. Both nights, the bartenders and drinks were fantastic. Stopped by The Hidden Bar for drinks and let me just say... the ambiance is EVERYTHING the aesthetic is super cute, very picture-worthy, and definitely gives that "night out with the girls" vibe. They even have a selfie ring light on the wall, which is such a fun touch for pictures (because if you didn't take pics, did you even go??) Now--fair warning--we went on a Friday night and it was PACKED. The bartender offered us free drinks to move to the bar instead of sitting on the comfy couch we had already claimed (weird). And then... the drinks weren't even free (more weird). A little bit of the popular Afrobeats and R&B/soul and old R&B vibes going, and played some songs from Renaissance by Beyonce I was in music heaven because I am a sucker for a good playlist. One thing about me, I love a good speakeasy. I did not know this place even existed until we were looking for a cocktail bar while in the area. The name is very fitting as it is hidden beind a door that blends into the wall of the Japanese restaurant Norigami. It is located in a shopping strip in West U so parking was pretty plentiful when we arrived in the evening. Their website states no reservations are needed for Hidden Bar, but when we walked into Norigami, they did ask if we had one. When we stated we didn't have one, they said no problem and lead us through the hidden door. What we walked into was small, but beautiful space with dim lighting and different origami covering every inch of the ceiling. There was also a dedicated, closed off glass case with a wall of expensive champagne as well. Seating is pretty limited with some seating at the bar and some seating off to the side. If you're rolling in deep, you might have a hard time finding seats together. We came at the right time and were able to find some seating easily. You can either order at the bar or order with a server. Customer service was excellent. We knew coming in we were going to be in and out so we made that one drink count. We studied the pretty extensive menu twice over to make the right decision. They have their own specialty cocktails along with the classics. They also have a pretty nice list sake, beer, wine, mocktails and different spirits. The drink that stood out to me was the Periscope. It was gin drink with elderflower, lemon, lime and egg whites. This drink was not only pretty to look at, but it was absolutely delicious. All the flavors worked in perfect harmony and the egg whites gave it this nice, velvety mouth feel. It was also very refreshing. All my friends got a variety of drinks that all had completely different looks and tastes. I tried every drink and they were all just as good as mine. I was kind of sad that we had to take off so quick because this place was a whole vibe. The music was on point and the drinks were delicious. The bathrooms are a trip to with mirrored doors and fancy toilets that have a remote. I'll be back for all of it sooner rather than later. read more

Hidden Bar has got the vibes but the service was lacking. The bar is located inside of Origami restaurant through an unmarked door panel just to the right as you walk in. Upon entering the bar, guests are immersed in a sexy, sophisticated cocktail lounge with low lighting, and a canopy of dedicate paper cranes on the ceiling. There's several small tables and also a number of spots at the bar. Thursday evenings starting at 9pm is reverse happy hour with a DJ, $9 cocktails and 25% off sake and wine. I checked my receipt and unfortunately this special was not applied. Maybe because of this special or perhaps the upcoming Fourth of July holiday, the bar was quite busy when we arrived. We found a spot to stand at the bar to place our drink order and began to wait. And wait. And wait. 45 minutes later one of the bartenders finally took our order. Once our order was in, you guessed it, it took even longer to get our drinks. We almost got to the point of just walking out. On this night there were only two bartenders and a bar back. I noticed that one of the bartenders really struggled to move quickly, struggling to prepare garnishes and to remember which cup was which when preparing multiple drinks at the same time. There were also multiple times that the bartender had to leave from behind the bar to walk drinks over to people at tables. Hidden Bar does have food options on their menu which seem to come from the Origami side and likewise, it seems like Origami guests can order cocktails that come from Hidden Bar. They might want to reconsider this as it diminishes the exclusivity of each business and reduces the efficiency of their staff on each side. I would also suggest that they consider adding a third bartender and a waitress to assist with taking drinks to tables rather than have the bartender take on this responsibility. They might be able to take a few other steps to help their bartenders handle high order volumes like prepare garnishes in advance. In the end, the drinks were good but the service was just such a let down. read more

It was poppin for a Thursday night and the DJ was playing great tunes! Cocktails were tasty and we ordered very generous caviar bumps. We took a few bartender recommended shots that were delicious. Hidden Bar makes some of the best cocktails in Houston. They have a pretty creative menu that could appeal to all tastes. There are some small appetizers but you're definitely coming here for the drinks. This place is great for a date night or with a small group of friends. It is a speakeasy vibe and the seating is limited so I would suggest trying to go before or after the peak rush time. There are sofas against one wall and seats at the bar and 1 tv where they are typically showing one of the games. The music is great (chill R&B and hip hop). The bartenders are great! The last time I went, Paul mentioned that he was leaving soon but he might be one of the best bartenders that I have experienced. He is knowledgeable and creative. This is one of my classic get your popcorn ready reviews that I hate to write but it has to be done. I stopped by on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving at 10:45 p.m. to be exact. They close at 11:00 p.m. (according to their Google page). Upon arriving, we were told that 10:45 was last call for drinks and since it was 10:46 by the time the hostess checked for us, they wouldn't be able to accommodate us. My response was really?! For one minute? The hostess went back and then a tall Asian gentleman (perhaps the manager?) returned. He told us that they actually had been closed for more than an hour due to the holidays. I then mentioned that it says they close at 11:00 p.m. He said they typically do but since it was the day before the holidays, they were closing early. I asked why they didn't update their Google page, it takes a matter of minutes, and he said well it's not an everyday type of thing. I said true but doing so prevents customers from driving to your establishment in vain as I did. At that point, he started just repeating himself. Zero accountability and zero compassion. The restaurant and bar business is a highly risky business. For a speakeasy to treat a customer in the way that they did was quite disappointing. Had he apologized, that would have helped ameliorate a crappy situation. It's common for restaurants in Europe to stay open well beyond their closing time if there are customers present providing business. In this case, they wasted my time due to operating as an inefficient business. The gentleman made the situation worse by the way in which he handled it. I'm the self-appointed king of speakeasies in Houston. True speakeasies are amazing experiences. Unfortunately, as the popularity of speakeasies have increased, new speakeasies have opened that have tried to capitalize on trends and for the "Instagram" crowd. Rather than sticking true to the true nature of what a speakeasy should be, they offer the opposite. Would Al Capone have denied me entry 15 minutes before closing time in Chicago during the Prohibition Era? I think not. Hidden Bar, you should stay hidden from existence if this is how you operate. read more

I absolutely love the vibe of this place. It's a speakeasy located inside of the Norigami restaurant. They don't take reservations but the inside is quite spacious with bar seating and a few booths. The decor is also super cute with hundreds of paper cranes hanging above. My friends and I came on a Saturday night just for drinks but eventually couldn't resist ordering some of their bar bites. My first drink was the Yamaneko which was cachaca-based with spiced asian pear, rhubarb, and coconut. It was my first time trying cachaca but all of the ingredients together made for a refreshing cocktail. The bartender even added a cool smoke bubble on top. My friend ordered the Nice to Matcha, a rum-based cocktail with matcha and pandan. I normally don't gravitate towards rum but her drink tasted like a dessert. Our bartender that night was amazing, had great attention to detail, and even gave us a sneak peek on a few drinks he was working on. I'm hoping the Hidden 85 makes an appearance on the menu soon! The bar bites we ordered aren't your typical bar bites but they were delicious nonetheless. Since we didn't dine at Norigami that day, we at least got to try some of their food. The bartenders here were completely unorganized, more interested in socializing with each other and their loud and obnoxious "friends" at the bar than actually serving other customers. We waited a ridiculous amount of time just to get our order in, only to watch them make drinks for the guy who ordered after us FIRST. Then it took another 20-30 minutes for our simple cocktails to finally arrive.
