Seems this place has gone downhill this year or doesn't care anymore. Could not find any candy except jaw breakers or rock candy, most of the candy jars are empty broken and dirty, what they call "handmades" were basically empty, the restroom looked like it had not been cleaned in weeks and now I had a surprise topping on my ice cream cone, a black pubic looking hair. Pretty damn gross. I couldn't even find an employee when I went in, no one was around and then I saw one girl just standing in the back on her phone, did not greet me at all until I said hello a few times. I was there a couple times in September and October and it seemed different then. The manager was very friendly and helpful, store was clean and pretty well stocked and it was a completely different experience than the one I had recently. What's going on? read more

I had my doubts from the looks of the outside, but boy was I wrong. Visiting Easter weekend was cool because they had the Easter bunny in costume there ready for photos. One infant was screaming his bloody head off in terror as his parents placed him the lap of an oversized bunny from a nightmare to take a photo! Lol. They snapped the pic quick to everyone's liking. This whole place is great for sugar-holics or wanna be diabetics. And it's clear the owners have an unhealthy relationship with M&Ms by looking at all the toys in the top shelf that goes throughout their shop. This is a neat place. We take the kids every time we visit family in Bastrop for the last 17 years. It has a bit of everything sweet. Older candy that you don't see much anymore, newer candy, joke or odd candy, they have a bunch. They have specialty candy and dipped candy like chocolate dipped Oreos or bacon. They have fudge and often locally made cookies too. They also serve ice cream and sell trinkets and bobbles. Definitely a cool place to take the kids and get an ice cream on hot days. Huge variety and selection, needs a lot of modern updating and I think our Candy was expired. It had a soapy taste to it. I was really excited because I'm from Northern California where the jelly belly factory is and I saw on doordash that they have jelly belly blackberries and raspberries. They tasted old and my younger son who is a candy addict wouldn't even eat them. The store is definitely a very old building so it is hard, I am sure to make it appear clean and not cluttered. The staff was very kind and the variety is so much you really are overstimulated with choice when you walk in. If I was the owner, I would invest in updating the property and downsizing selection and making sure things remain fresh and not expired. I would see what sells the most and hyper focus on those items. I'm not the owner, so, obviously it's a very old established business the community loves but this town is ripe for new entrepreneurs and innovation.... Especially with the housing boom here. We just did our daughter's joint birthday party here & I cannot recommend them enough! The hosts were very attentive, helpful, & super friendly. All we did was show up with food, goodie bags, & birthday cake, they took care of everything else! Set up, the clean up, drinks, utensils, decorations, the activity, hosting, everything! This was the easiest, non stressed party we've ever had. I highly recommend if you're having a small party (it's on the back patio, so not super big for a large party), it's affordable, & fun for the kiddos. ADD THE CANDY RUN!!! The whole store stopped what they were doing & cheered on those who participated, it was awesome. Thanks "Sugar" for hosting, entertaining the kids, & just an overall great time! Went there for dessert for my birthday today. Had a dipped waffle cone with Rocky Road ice cream. Their scoops are huge!! I tried some of their chocolates. I thought I got a coconut chocolate, but I made it home with two caramel chocolates, two dark chocolate lemon Creme chocolates and a chocolate chocolate truffle. I like the caramel. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the strong lemon in the lemon Creme chocolate. I literally ate both and am still craving more!! It's called Sugar Shack. How could it not be awesome?! I saw this place as we were driving to Bastrop State Park, and knew I'd need to stop by after my 25k trail run. So after refueling with a huge burger and beer after the race, where better to stop than at a place that sells sugar? So much sugar. Yummy sugar! They have bulk candy, candy bars (my hubby found a Cherry Mash that he loves and rarely sees), chocolate covered gummy bears (my favorite) and these decadent sea salt chocolate caramels. I could have spent SO MUCH money there. I could get SO FAT living close to here. Hubby bought fudge too, and didn't have it till the next day, and it was a little dry. So, not sure if it was dry when we bought it or not. It still tasted okay, just not as good as we had hoped. I would go to Buc-ees for fudge next time. Or, maybe ask them for a sample to make sure it wasn't dried out. I didn't see any of the weird stuff another reviewer saw; just candy, stuffed animals, and a lot of cute trinkets. But I admit I was distracted by all the sweets. It's not cheap, but they have almost everything you could want, and the people are super friendly and helpful, as well. It was held on the back porch, they supplied streamers, balloons, a banner sign. I did bring a few decorations just to tie in the theme. First, I have to say that their key lime truffles are OFF THE HOOK! Yes, I said it! The last time I only bought one since I'm usually not a truffle (or fudge) person and I made the mistake of waiting until I got back home to eat it. I am in love... What a great little small town gem off the highway! It's off of the Highway 71 expressway on the west side of downtown. There aren't a lot of signs or advertising for it, but I'm beyond glad I found it. This gem is one of those places you find when you get off the highway and start to explore Texas. It's a true quaint little sweet shop without any pretense. They have a variety of homemade candies, prepackaged candies, baked goods, and Blue Bell ice cream of all sorts. Pretty much anything you'd want to satisfy your sweet tooth is right here, even nostalgic items like candy cigarettes. Mom and I each had an ice cream cone and came away more than satisfied. The selection and quality here was enough for a good review, but what impressed me was the service. We came about 30 minutes before closing and the young lady working there never made us feel rushed. In fact, she wasn't even happy with the first scoop of my ice cream, so she remade my cone. I wouldn't have been upset with the first cone, but she said the ice cream on top wasn't hard enough. It's incredible to find service so dedicated to doing the right thing. This is one place you should definitely go to spoil your appetite and your sweet tooth. read more

The new owners only care about profit, they fired me because I couldn't get to customers fast enough even though they would schedule me for 8 hours and I'm crippled. They docked my pay without telling me or having me sign anything which I just learned is illegal, the stuff there is great but the new owners don't want to take responsibility that they don't know how to run the store because they didn't show up for training because they had other important stuff, of a customer leaves a bad review about service we get yelled at when they are usually standing there just watching me work, also I don't think they got there food selling permit signed over yet so idk how they are even open still they don't care much about their employees, the workload has increased 10 times since the other owner left and they still can't seem to un why things can't get done, yes that module works for corporate chains but not when. There's only 3 people working throughout the day, they don't know the actual leg work it takes to get everything done , I gave them everything and when I wasn't crippled I was basically running the stre by myself with my assistant. And they had the audacity to tell me that it didn't make sense to pay someone to just stit around, thanks for listening to my rant just basically know that the morals and hometo spirit of the old sugar shack are gone, it's all about the money now and for them.tp do the least possible they'll say they're doing behind the scenes stuff but I literally already knew how to do it and it doesn't take much work at all read more
