We had such a great time trying on clothes and both- my friend and I- walked away with gorgeous pieces we fell in love with. Can't wait to get my jumpsuit tailored and wear it out asap! Something for everyone! I've always been enamored with this (not so) little boutique on J street with the fun mural on the side. They've ALWAYS had something I've lusted after. It only got worse when they started posting their items on Instagram. I've been a customer for over a decade (I think) and they always have something in my budget. They also always have something not in my budget. I swear there is always something that I think will be reasonable in price, but then it ends up being really expensive. Then I look around more and then I find something that I'm assuming will break the bank and it is reasonable. Reasonable enough that I have to do a double take on the price tag. I love that they support local artists and sell local stuff, while also having some main stream brands too. Their collection is diverse and minimal, so you won't see too many other lovely Sacramentans wearing the same thing! That's really important. I love that they have rewards program, which recently they switched over from the punch stamp card to the iPad system. They even offered to convert the points from the punch card, so don't be shy if you have the old cards -- they'll take care of you. Also, if you shop at the most random time and check-in on Yelp you get 25% off your purchase. YES. You read that correctly! They did however make my tank non-refundable after using the discount, but I didn't' care. It wasn't' coming back anyways. That's a for sure Sac Town Pro tip for the ladies (cause there's no men's clothing here). From wedding attire to casual beach wear, they carry everything you'll ever need. More than I want too 'need' at least ;) I love to support local and they make it way too easy. Especially with Instagram posting and holding items to come grab after work. Decided to go shopping at some boutiques on J Street yesterday, and after having a not-so-pleasant experience at one, I headed into Sugar Shack. I really wish I knew the woman's name helping me (one was Bonnie), because she was SO SWEET and attentive and helpful. A total 180 from my prior experience at the other boutique. The ladies quickly set me up with a dressing room, offered so many suggestions and other items, and checked on me constantly while I tried on my outfits. I loved the unnamed woman's honest opinions she gave me! I ended up leaving with a ton of, quality, beautiful, items! Here's a pic of one of the dresses I bought! I can't give the Sugar Shack anything but five shiny stars, and I can't even shop here! This all-female clothing boutique is the sister store to super popular Krazy Mary's in East Sacramento. Both carry relatively the same brands, but what really impresses me is the friendly and outgoing staff. My usual hangout here is the front couch. I'll sit and fiddle with my phone while my wife disappears into the racks, usually returning some time later with several super cute dresses to add to her wardrobe. While I sit, the gals at the counter never cease to keep me company. They never bother customers but never leave them stranded either, offering up any help they can give with hunting down sizes or fashion suggestions. This place is nice, but the prices can vary a lot. Some dresses are 30-50, but then some are 80 or 90 (when they don't seem like they would/should be). Which should make you check the price before falling in love with a piece if you're not willing to spend a lot. Also, the sales people (or at least the woman the last time I was there) seemed really insincere when she randomly commented on what I was trying on. Literally looked at me for a second and was just trying to push the sale without really seeing how I looked/felt. Maybe I'll stop by again in a few months, but just isn't really a go to for boutiques in Sacramento. read more

I love this place!. I follow your Instagram and whoever does it, crushes it and that is coming from a guy. I enjoy surprising my GF with outfits from Sugar Shack, typically again off of IG posts. The sales associate, Summer, always takes care of me over the phone, she is super friendly and almost too helpful hahah the queen of up sells! (Bravo!) My friend works for a boutique clothing distributor in SF. She is basically a middle man: her company establishes relationships with clothing companies and manufacturers, and she drives all over Nor Cal showing samples of the clothes to little boutiques like Sugar Shack. Good boutique owners have an eye for the good stuff, and place an order for what they think their customers will like. I would imagine most boutiques have multiple relationships with distributors like my friend. If it is a good boutique, the owner probably has direct relationships with some local artists and other unique manufacturers. I can't really speak for Sugar Shack - all I know is that they have some of the best variety of any boutique I have ever been to. Truly, they have something for everyone. Sometimes boutiques in the Bay or LA will really focus on one style (hippy chic, tattoo inspired, punk rock, glam, etc.) The problem with this is that if that one style doesn't work on you (like for me, I have always been unable to wear the hippy chic look because I have such huge hips - ironic, I know) than you are S.O.L. I have bought some really hip t-shirts for my high school age sisters at Sugar Shack - and the price has been very reasonable. Why spend $40 on a tee shirt that everyone will have from Abercrombie when you can buy something no one else will have for $30? The clothes are all unique, hand detailed and beautiful. If you have a special event and would like to really stand out, I would recommend starting at Sugar Shack and Crazy Mary's to see what they have in stock. Sometimes I walk out empty handed if nothing really strikes my fancy or fits my budget. But sometimes you will see that perfect dress and you know when you look at it that you are going to be on fire all night! read more

The girls here are super friendly, not pretentious, not the kind who snub their noses and ignore you when they think you're not going to buy anything. I ran into one in a sandwich shop across the street and she acknowledged me with a quick "Hey!" and the most genuine smile ever, she was already off the clock too! 2. The sale rack is good. My what-would-be $60 cool sweater, was only $29 and a damn good find. Their stuff can be pretty pricey, they sell brands such as Free People and Industry, but its nice just to dream about some of the pieces they have. read more

I've been here 3 times now on a business trip. The first time was amazing and the sales associate was so helpful and sweet. I went back a second time and did not have the same experience , but it's ok.They were tending to a regular. I still bought something. The third time they were not very nice to me, but they were so nice to the regular in there. Complete change in tone with them and me. I was in workout clothes , so maybe that was a turnoff. Plus I am not a local. So if you live in Cali it may be a different experience. The amazing associate I had the first time that I went to the boutique was not there the last two times unfortunately. Sugar Shack is a little ol' place where... we can get our shop on! Sugar Shack, baby! What this cute little J Street boutique lacks in floor space, it more than makes up for with unique and intriguing pieces for your wardrobe. I always find at least a couple pieces that I usually have to wrench myself away from; it's not that I don't buy them because the prices are too high (some pieces can be pricey but overall pricing is not ridiculously high) but because I'm trying to rein in my clothes compulsion. BOO, being an adult and being fiscally responsible. Sugar Shack is where I bought 2 of my favorite pieces of fashion: my sky blue burnout tank top with a print of vintage sexgod David Bowie, and my long rainbow neon 'K$sha on peyote at Burning Man' feather earrings. I went here with my cousin and her friend while we waited for the Chicago fire place to open and I really didn't get it. The owner said that many people wondered what her store was and often thought it was a thrift store because Sacramento hasn't been a city with many boutiques, but I think that may have been due more to the clothes in the store than just the city its located in. She said she got the idea after seeing SoCal boutiques but all the clothes in her store just looked OLD. They looked like something you could find on the streets of Santa Cruz or Berkeley for $5 a pop - bargain basement Lucky Brand hippie wear. I came here to look for a dress to wear to a semi-formal event and was pleasantly surprised by the A+ service I received! A friend of mine doesn't like coming here, because she thinks the associates are stuck up. I, however, didn't have that experience. Whitney, the sales associate, was super thoughtful in helping me pick out dresses. She asked me questions about the type of event I was attending and my style of clothing. I appreciated her being inquisitive, because it meant that I didn't have to try on a bunch of random shit. Nice touch, Whitney! In addition to the great customer service, I also loved the variety of items the store carries. There was a great mix of cute tops, skirts, dresses, jeans, and accessories. The prices vary, so you can end up spending a lot or a little depending on what you purchase. Overall, it was a great shopping experience, which means a lot coming from me (a hater of shopping). Lots of pretty little things and excellent customer service! When I first came in just before Christmas, I found an adorable cardigan by the brand Knitted Dove, which Whitney (one of their associates) was actually wearing. I love it when the people who work there wear the clothes they sell - you can tell they're really passionate about them! Anyway, they only had a XS or a L in stock, but I wrote down my info and Whitney told me she'd call me if they ordered replenishment of those cardigans. Surprisingly, I got a call two weeks later from her - they got more sizes in, and Whitney put one on hold for me to pick up! I love the cardigan (and some of Sugar Shack's other items) - but the excellent service is what will make me return and shop with Sugar Shack again. read more

Love this boutique. It's so tiny and cozy! The girls who work there are awesome! They're so friendly, welcoming, and some of them actually talk to you as if you've known each other forever... they're just that nice! As expensive and wonderful their clothes are here, they are great! It's expensive because they have designer brands like Theory, Obey, Velvet, and lots more. However, for those on a budget like me, they do have amazing sales, which ranges between 10-50%! I love their clothes, accessories, and of course their TOMS (huge fan of TOMS). This place was actually the only place that had my TOMS size and style that I wanted (TOMS website didn't have my size). The only downfall was that their TOMS (well the cordones at least) was about $10 more than how much the website sold it for, which was kind of weird.... I recommend people --- ladies to be exact --- to check this place out. Sorry men, only girl clothes, but you can always go with your chicks =) read more

I have been a Sugar Shack regular since I was 13 years old!! (about 8 years ago). Their clothes are great quality - the pieces that I haven't grown out of have lasted for years and are still hip! Each item in the store is unique, and that's what I look for in a boutique. Everything is what you'd call "in style" but people with their own style will love it because of the great variety! The store stands out among the rest for its wonderful service. Mary and her staff at both Sugar Shack and Krazy Mary's (they are sister stores) have become my friends. Well, at least they make me feel like that! Every time I go in I have a quality conversation with one of the employees and it seems like they remember everything that's going on with my life! I agree with another review that says "Skip the mall, go to Sugar Shack." Beautiful unique pieces for the indie street urban skating hipster genre. A large selection of their clothes are actually made to fit adult womens bodies, opposed to teenage. They had wooden framed sunglasses, which says enough in itself. The only thing I didn't like is that they currently sell Banksy shirts. I'm pretty sure that its the commercialized version of his art that is being capitalized by someone whom is not .. him. Which is kid of the exact opposite of what an indie street urban skating hipster would want to buy. I didn't buy anything this round, but regardless, they have a great selection. I've always wanted to go into this store due to the attractive art on the side of the building. Finally went here after years of wondering with some girlfriends of mine, and I was glad I did. Selection was smaller than I thought, but the items I walked away with were very cute and I know that no one else (or very few) in town will have what I ended up purchasing. So I went in to Sugar Shack about three-ish years ago looking to replenish my stock of LA Made shirts (which I knew they carried). At that time, they didn't have any in stock, but the sweet and super-perky salesgirl said if I left a little note about it in their customer request book, they would get back to me as soon as they got a new shipment in. A few months went by without word, and I eventually forgot about having gone in. Two months ago, I get a call from an unknown number. Picked it up, and whaddaya know - it's the Sugar Shack, telling me about the shipment of LA Made shirts they just got in. Shipment of what, do you say? I said I wanted shirts? Oh, uh, yeah... Clothes are cute. I wasn't acknowledged which is fine because I was just browsing. There was an older woman with tattoos and a southern accent that was helping another customer. I guess I was in her way because she happened to get very close to me and brushed up against my shoulder as if I was supposed to move for her. That was SO RUDE! She didn't say excuse me or even apologize. She would periodically look me up and down. I waited to try on clothes that I had planned on buying after all and instead of taking me first, the same lady decided the woman that came after me could go first. I had to walk out from there. I'm not sure what her problem was. Maybe because I was in my scrubs I didn't meet her standards of shopping there (which I have before when I'm in the area) or even worse, because of my race.
