Not what it used to be. It use to be, really good BBQ. My recent visit ordering a Two Meat Plate…read morewith Two Sides was a total disappointment. It was so disappointing, that I didn't even eat it all. I threw half of it away and I rarely waste food. My Two Plate was a Pork Steak and Brisket, with Smokehouse Beans and Spicy Cheese Corn. The Pork Steak was good, but the Brisket was dried and tough. The Smokehouse Beans have disappointed me before, but I wanted to give them another chance. Again, they were to runny and had not enough seasoning to give them pizzaz. Their Spicy Cheese Corn was just okay, it was cheesy, but did no live up to the "Spicy" name. What was most disappointing was the customer service. The young lady taking my order was friendly and professional, so she gets a thumbs up. The disappointment came when I was presented my order at the counter. As I waited for my for to be prepared I took a stool at the counter, just down from the register. When it was ready, the owner brought it out and dropped the bag in front of me and turned to walk away. No thank-you, no nothing. I had to speak first, to get response and it was just faint grunt. It is a sad day when a business owner cannot thank a customer for supporting his business.

My parents tried the pulled pork and said it was tender as well. The dinner portion of brisket was on the smaller side but it had great flavor & practically fell apart. The only things I didn't care for is the pickles (if you like sweet pickles you'll like these) & that sweet bbq is the only option for sauce, I love a spicy bbq, and honestly Phat head bbq sauce from the guy in holiday shores would compliment this bbq so well. But despite that I'd absolutely get dinner from here again.

This is easily a five-star review, and it's coming from someone who isn't a true BBQ lover. This…read moreplace was suggested by a local, and I am so glad that I went because it was the best BBQ that I have ever had. I wasn't sure what to order, but the friendly staff recommended that I have the brisket, and I'm so glad I heeded their advice. The brisket sandwich was the most tender meat that I have ever had. I had never had brisket before having that sandwich, now my mouth waters any time I talk about this restaurant! The cole slaw that I had as a side provided the perfect crunch and balance. My mate had the pulled pork sandwich, which was also very tender. I also loved having a variety of barbecue sauces on the table and was able to try each one. Everyone has a preference, I'm sure, but after trying each one, I am completely sold on the Carolina gold. Also, I do not typically have a fountain soda, but the cola that was on tap was some of the best that I'd ever tasted. 10 out of 10 for Sugarfire, and I will definitely be returning the next time I'm in St. Louis!

The giant pig statue in front of the restaurant was actually quite informative, as it described where the meat comes from on a pig. Anyway, as I entered the restaurant, I stood in line. It was quite busy for a Saturday afternoon. There are long tables with many seats, so seating wasn't an issue. It is a first come first served dining situation. I ordered the 2-meat plate: brisket, ribs, baked beans, and potato salad. The brisket and the sides were definitely my favorite parts. The brisket was so tender, it basically fell apart in my hands! It was delicious! The baked beans were tangy and sweet, and the potato salad was creamy. I didn't like the ribs, they were very dry and definitely not worth the money. The barbecue sauces are in bottles on the table; my personal favorite was the Honey Badger, sweet with a little bit of heat. I found the Coffee BBQ sauce to be the most interesting; I have never had anything like it before. The coffee notes were subtle and helped balance out the smoky flavors. While I enjoyed the majority of my food, I am not sure if I will be returning. It was a nice experience, but the dry ribs left me feeling disappointed.

It's a neat-looking place--nicely decorated, inviting, and full of that good smoky aroma that hits you as soon as you step inside. We were welcomed immediately, told to sit wherever we liked, and our waitress followed us over to take our drink orders right away. My wife ordered the meatloaf special, and while I teased her for choosing meatloaf at a BBQ joint, I ended up going with the Smoked Reuben. They brought her an entire meatloaf, along with green beans and mashed potatoes. I'm not exaggerating--this loaf easily could have fed three people. It was so good she nearly hurt herself trying to finish it. She almost made it through all the green beans, too, but I managed to snag the last one--and it was delicious. Then came my Reuben: a massive, five-layer monstrosity. I actually asked the waitress whether they made it that way just to impress me (since I had announced upfront that I'm a bit of a Reuben snob, lol) or if all their Reubens are like this. She swore they're all made exactly the same. You've got to see the photo. The marbled rye was sturdy and didn't collapse under the weight of two layers of thinly sliced smoked beef and a thick layer of juicy, tangy sauerkraut. I'm a kraut lover, so I really appreciated how generous they were. The house-made Thousand Island-style sauce tied everything together perfectly. In the nearly 17 years I've been posting on Urbanspoon, Zomato, and now Yelp, this Reuben easily sits in my top three--maybe even my #1. The smoky flavor made it unique, and I loved it. My only regret was not being able to finish this monster of a sandwich--it was delicious but messy, and I went through a handful of napkins. A lovely lady came out to ask how I liked the Reuben and introduced herself as one of the owners. (I apologize--I've forgotten her name!) My only suggestion would be to keep the meat thinly sliced--shaved would be even better--and maybe offer a half portion at a lower price. As it was, I could barely touch my perfectly cooked French fries. To top off the experience, my wife ordered the bread pudding. She has a "gold standard" bread pudding from years ago that she compares all others to, and she said this one was just as good, if not better, than her all-time favorite. I wish we had a Sugar and Smoke closer to home, because it would absolutely be a regular stop for us. It's so refreshing to find an establishment that cares this much about its food and its customers.

The burnt ends were the star of the show, so juicy! My brisket was a tad dry. They also put the sauce in the fridge so it's cold, but there might not be a way to avoid that food-safety wise. Their wings are also really good. The mac-n-cheese side is good. You order at the counter and they give you a number and bring your food out to you. The only other thing I don't love is there's two rooms, the main room and a room off to the side, and especially if you are in the side room, it feels like you are crammed in there with a ton of other people and sometimes it gets really loud. When it's nice enough, we prefer to sit outside as they have a few picnic benches off to the side that are covered.

My research brought me here to Pappy's. I'm very glad it did. Ambiance starts with a line out the door, literally. You slowly shuffle down a long hallway full of Pappy's memorabilia. Then you make it to the ordering counter, order, and find a table. The dining room is huge, plenty of tables, with a full complement of sauces on each table. The service people at the counter were friendly, and so were the people delivering the food. The food came out quick and hot and delicious. We had baked beans and potato salad for sides, and they were pretty solid. Nothing show-stealing, but no complaints about them whatsoever. And of course, we got the ribs. Tender, juicy, a nice bite and chew, a decent bark, just a really wonderful rib. Better than any St. Louis style rib I've ever had back home in Florida. Other states, hard to say, the jury's out, but in that moment, I was eating a five-star rib. So good. We also got a 1/4 pound of the Burnt Ends. Usually, burnt ends are the king of meats, but I think we've entered the phase of America, where they're just another variety of meat and not necessarily upper echelon anymore. That being said, these were pretty ok. Should have gotten more ribs. Overall, Pappy's was pretty wow. Great local spot with a lot of pride and history, excellent ribs, I will definitely try to come back next time I'm in town.

It's not hard to see why The Food Network rated Pappy's as the "#1 rib joint in the country", as this place is next level bbq. You can smell the bbq from down the street and it will instantly make you hungry, even if you just ate... The place has the "cool bbq joint vibes", the employees are ultra-friendly, and it's fair/reasonable priced based on the quality of the food (runs between $40-50 for two people). Strongly recommend getting ribs, but their smoked chicken and turkey are outstanding as well. I didn't love their original bbq sauce (it was too thick and sweet with a heavy molasses flavor), but the hoodoo spicy sauce was out of this world. I would put Pappy's up against some of the other big named bbq joints in the country and they'd hold their own... Definitely worth the stop when in STL.

Ordered a 3 meat platter, ribs, burnt ends & brisket, sides were Mac & cheese & twisted fries. Platter took a few minutes to make while we freshened up, got our drinks and found a table. Food was delivered and first off everything looked yummy, everything was also hot which is important to me. Ribs were lightly smoked, had good bark on them & were seasoned well. Burnt ends were delicious and so was the brisket. Platter served with 2 slices of bread & garlic butter, this was a nice touch. Sides were both yummy as well. Tried a few of their specialty sauces and they were delicious as well. Now I may be nit picking here, but they lost a point for how the platters were served, 2 identical platters should be identical. One platter had thick cut brisket, the other thin sliced. One had Mac & cheese with crunchy crumbles, the other no crumbles. Also the ribs were dry, I know with baby back there is not much meat, but these were overdone.

There it was like finding a Walgreens, there practically was one on every block. After a few misses at other restaurants, I thought I'd give Fire-n-Smoke a try. Actually, I was driving back from STL and my go to in STL was closed due to a water pipe break, so I had no BBQ in the car. When I programmed their address in the GPS, I was shocked how close it was to the intersection of 111 and 255. This was going to be an easy pick-up and back on the road to home. First impressions count and this place was super clean, practicing social distancing and everyone was wearing mask (correctly) and the staff were also wearing gloves on both sides of the counter. Win! Being a first time visitor, I'll admit I went overboard with my order. I ordered way to much food for one person, but I got to sample many things and I divided it up into additional meals. Not only did I have today's lunch, but I also have lunch and dinner for tomorrow. To sample multiple meats, I ordered the Three Meat Platter. I choose; Baby Back Ribs, Burnt Ends and Pulled Pork. The young cashier recommended the pulled pork, she said it was one of their most popular. Out of the three meats, it was my favorite. The ribs had good flavor, but did not totally fall off the bone the way I like it. I had to do some work, to get all the meat off the bone. The Burnt Ends were good, but a little fattier then I am use to. However, I'll give them another try. My platter came with two sides. Everyone raves about the Mac-n-Cheese in the Yelp reviews, so it was a no brainer to choose it. Again, I asked the cashier which other one I should choose and she recommended the Fried Potato Twisters. I didn't want two heavy carbs, so I asked if they did the BBQ Beans in house and she said, yes. I know it's another carb, but it just seemed a better choice. Also, easier to split up into another meal than cold fries. I liked the Mac-n-Cheese. I really appreciated that it was baked and served in its own separate tin dish. Could have had more seasoning for me, but that can be resolved with a pepper shaker and spices from home. The BBQ Beans were pretty standard and had good flavor and lots of brisket pieces in it. In addition to the Three Meat Platter, I ordered 6 Chicken Wings and I'll tell you now, these little babies will be a go to for me. They are smoked over oak before being tossed in the fryer and tossed in the sauce of your choice. I had the Buffalo sauce served on the side for mine. No sauce needed, these little beauties tasted divine, just as they were. Best of all, they also packaged them, 3 flats and 3 drums. If you know me, you know I want the numbers to match. Service was friendly and as stated earlier, they were following CDC guidelines to the max. So glad I finally gave them a try and realized it's only a 12-15 drive from home. Not bad for good BBQ.
