I had a fantastic Tuesday night dinner. They were offering a $30 3 Course Dinner, but I went with the $25 Pepperloin Steak. Before ordering, I enjoyed a Tito's Extra Dry Martini with a Lemon Twist. The bartenders here are masters of their mixologist skills. Trust me I know, they've made my a lot of cocktails. Once my entree arrived, I totally impressed with all three items. The asparagus was prepared perfectly. It wasn't too hard and not overly soft. It had just enough snap. The Loaded Baked Potato was the size of a fist, which is a perfect size. It was fluffy and was topped with butter, cheese and bacon. The steak was truly the piece of resistance. It was super tender and they served it a true medium rare. The kitchen truly knocked it out of the park with this meal. I was a happy diner. Good food and good service will have me returning to Gentelin's, time and time again. read more

Gentelin's is a nice higher class restaurant on Broadway in Alton, IL. Perfect place for a special date or celebrating an anniversary. Lights are low and the dining area is beautiful. The menu items are pricey for the area. However, the food is amazingly good. We met another couple to celebrate a birthday. My husband ordered Aunt Jaynes Chicken and French Onion Soup. The chicken came out with mashed potatoes and small serving of green beans. My husband is critical when it comes to restaurant food and he said it was great. The chicken was seasoned perfectly. I ordered the Chicken Condon Bleu which was served over pasta with a white sauce and a small Greens and Apple salad. So delicious! Our waitress was attentive without being overbearing. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice night out. I suggest reservations. And, the dress is a little more than casual. read more

Last week-end we wanted to have dinner at Gentelin's, so .. made a reservation and went. I ordered the Tempura Lobster and Shrimp, which was a HUGE disappointment. Since this is the 3rd inferior dinner I have had in a year at your restaurant, I felt compelled to write you a note. I don't believe that the "cooks" that you are employing, actually know how/don't care, to make a Tempura batter, and/or how to tell if seafood is fresh or not, if your nose is not working. I received a previously frozen Lobster tail, that had been dipped and cooked in thick, regular flour and 3 very small shrimp that were not FRESH, rubbery hard and tasteless. Tempura batter MUST USE a low protein flour, mixed with Corn Starch and CARBONATED WATER. You will not get the light toasted taste any other way, and the diner gets a mouthful of raw flour. Previously frozen and then mutilated lobster tails, then fried..... IS NOT A GOOD TASTE- they are tough.... and for $44.00 is OUTRAGEOUS. $44.00 for poorly/improperly cooked old food.....seriously...? What is with the old, tiny shrimp...? 3 tiny and old- at least 5 days old, shrimp with a dinner or for an appetizer...? Not right....Dierberg's does shrimp far better than your restaurant... maybe you could get some there. Alton and Grafton have always been a refreshing escape from the regular Florissant restaurants here....which are all fried chicken. We like the feel and ambience of your restaurant, but your chairs are HARD AND UNCOMFORTABLE. ...and the caliber of folks wandering in with jeans, just does not do it for me.... So... we will never be back.... teach the people cooking and/or, for those prices, hire a real chef that can produce a nice dinner.... read more

We went here for our anniversary and it was excellent! I would eat Aunt Jayne's chicken for dinner a few times a week if I could. Perfectly cooked chicken that reminds you chicken can rival the other meats. The salad that came before was delicious. The dessert we had after was very good. The restaurant has white table cloths, nice lighting and we had a beautiful view of the river. Lovely atmosphere. Service was great. We'll most definitely be back, I imagine lots! read more

Gentlins has been our go to for a 5 star experience for years, however, the experience has been a solid 3 stars for us more recently . Our last experience was less than stellar, but we chalked it up to a one off. This evening we had dinner reservations for 7pm, we were sat 15 minutes late with no estimated wait time or offer for alternative seating, despite bar seats being available. 10 minutes later we left at 7:25pm still without our drink order fully fulfilled (the drink order was just a tea and a lemonade) & still not having orders for food in. Not the experience of customer service or promptness there was in the past. We may try again in the future, but with different expectations than we've had for many years. read more

One of the best restaurants I have been to in a long time! I am a foodie, so I usually know what I am talking about. The food was amazing. We are talking James Beard level. Our waitress, Beth was one of the best waitresses ever. She was on point with everything. I wished I lived close, so I could eat there once a week. The restaurant itself was nicely decorated with ample space between tables. They had a great bar with good bourbon and multiple bathrooms. We had the pot stickers and lobster dip for appetizer. Both are highly recommended and were amazing. We had the salad with green apples and was very good. The scallops were prepared perfectly and the risotto was delicious. We got the Mac and Cheese as an appetizer and it was really good and a little spicy but not too spicy just the right amount. The bread and house made butter that they served was also very good!! My crab stuffed chicken was pretty good, but I'm not sure I would get it again. It needed a bit more flavor or maybe to be served with something else as the flavors all seemed to mesh together. Our server was adorable and attentive and very helpful. The vibe is a bit more casual than I thought it would be (I saw people in jeans and hoodies), but that doesn't really matter to me- just thought it might be helpful to know. :) overall, a good spot!! read more

We stopped here, first time, heading home from rambling. Arrived early for dinner service. We were very impressed with the modern, warm decor in the main dining room and noted the lounge/bar sounded lively. The food was on point! We had the soup du jour (a bean tortilla with kick), the amazing table bread and good herbed butter, greens and apple salad + grilled chicken pasta for me and the filet mignon for my fella. From the time we entered = Excellent service from the hostess, bus staff, and in particular our server, LaNae, who was informative, friendly, warm, and took great care we felt welcomed. My favorites are the Oriental chicken or salmon salad, the goat cheese salad, and the Salmon and Tuna entrees. My husband enjoys the Ribeye. Soups are great too! Gentelin's is an upscale dining experience. My friend treated me here as a congrats for getting a new job. This was the perfect celebration restaurant! Friend had made reservations, so we were seated right away. We ordered drinks -they were both made well and delicious. My friend ordered a house special drink and really enjoyed it. I got my standard White Russian and loved it. I ordered the ribeye over potatoes and asparagus. They had another offering that had crispy onions on them and I really wanted those so I asked for a side of those as well and the server impressed me with "I'll just bring you a lil side to top your steak if you like" - which she did and they were so amazing! The little things can really take your experience up a notch. My steak was so tender and well seasoned. Delicious. Friend ordered a seafood dish and she really liked it. She also had a salad with her order which I tried and it was above average. I really enjoyed it! They provided a table bread basket that we also quickly devoured - the butter was unique like seasoned with herbs - YUM! The service was consistent, courteous and helpful. Everything you would expect from an upscall dining experience. The view from the dining room looks out over the river and provides a nice ambience. The only thing I didn't love was that they seated us at a tiny, not comfortable table for 2 right up against a wall and backing to another wall. It was an awkward placement. Yes, we were a party of 2 so it does makes sense... but the restaurant never filled up and the table is too small for 2 with all the dishes. We had to move our waters and bread to a lil ledge because the table was so full. So maybe ask for a larger table as needed when you make reservations. read more

It was a bit loud because of the live music -- which we enjoyed, but made it a bit harder to talk. People talking louder to talk be heard over the music. After sitting us it took about 10 minutes and they finally realized we were there and waited on us to get our drink orders. the food was overall good. i had the chicken breast stuffed with lump crab on a bed of this angel hair pasta. the pasta portion of the meal stole the show! it was such a creamy and rich sauce. i think the breading on the chicken was a bit too, thick? i can't really find the word for it but it kinda ruined the chicken breast. Gentelin's is THE fine dining option in Alton. We went in last night at around 5. We were able to take advantage of their happy hour on drinks and appetizers (that lasts until 6 during the week). What I ordered: we ordered the Santa Fe wraps and pork dumplings for appetizers. Both were on the happy hour menu and both were just okay. I think I could get better versions of both dishes other places. For my entree I ordered the goat cheese and pear salad. The goat cheese surprised me. It wasn't directly on the salad, but rather in two fries goat cheese bites that were AMAZING. I think they should just offer the goat cheese bites as an appetizer. One thing that threw me off about the salad- the pear was in big chunks. This isn't a big deal, but I feel like it is normally sliced. My boyfriend ordered the chicken and andouille skewer. He loved it! I would probably give this experience 3 stars if not for the drink I ordered- the mojito. It was perfectly muddled and so refreshing on a hot day! We have been going to Gentelin's for about 10 years and the food is consistently excellent. My wife and I were there last night and we both had the filet mignon. I also ordered a crab stuffed portabella mushroom to complement my steak. Talk about YUM! Ryan is the owner and chef, and he takes personal ownership in maintaining the outstanding quality of the food. He also has a special talent of bringing together the right ingredients to make each menu item wonderful. A recent example is the Crabmeat Stuffed Chicken - to die for! The salads are also very good and they offer a $5.00 appetizer from time to time, last night's was Philly Cheesesteak wontons, yummy and very creative! The food always comes out in a timely manner and is always the right temperature. They also have a very good beer, wine, and drink selection too. Ryan has assembled a GREAT team and Beth is our regular server. She is outstanding, professional, and very attentive to our needs. We have had other servers when Beth isn't there and they too are top notch. The restaurant offers a beautiful view of the Mississippi river for added ambience. Met my friends here last night after not seeing them for awhile. There were four of us, separate checks. I ordered a frozen margarita, potstickers, and a hot fudge sundae. After a few sips of my drink the waitress asked how it was. I only drink alcohol about twice a year, so I could tell there was hardly any in it. A little while later she brought me another, no charge. Very kind, but there was also hardly any tequila in the second one either. After 2, I didn't even have a buzz. My second friend ordered crab cakes and had two strawberry margaritas on the rocks. When her bill came she had been charged $2 for "ice" for each drink. My third friend ordered soup, which she never received and needed her bill adjusted. My fourth friend had amazing artichoke dip, red wine, delicious au gratin potatoes and a blue cheese kabob with tiny cuts of meat. Mixed feelings about this visit. read more

We were escort to a lovely window seat we had prearrange by early reservation. We were so impressed with the professionalism from the Maitre D' down to the bus service. Now to the reason we go out to wine and dine. First the drinks were Cosmos for the lady's and a Gtonic and a RCdbl&7 for the men, to say they have excellent drinks. Appetizers very good: House Made Maryland Crab Cakes - Breaded lump crabmeat, served on a bed of mixed greens with a basil remoulade - 11 Dinning Goat cheese salad excellent all others are salads. Tempura Lobster - A tempura battered Maine lobster tail served with a roasted shrimp risotto made with red peppers, scallions, fire roasted corn and bacon then drizzled with a smoked tomato olive oil and served with a side of drawn butter - 29 Pan seared sea scallops and roasted jumbo shrimp served over a Yukon gold potato hash with house-made Italian sausage and leeks, finished in a sherry cream sauce - 27 Filet mignon 8oz medium, lightly seasoned with sea-salt and topped with maître d' butter and crisp potatoes. Gentelin's is absolutely one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. As a personal chef and foodie, this means a lot. First, I would highly encourage setting reservations as they are very busy. But they managed to get our family of 4 in without one, in the bar area (if given the option of bar or private seating area, go for the private). The bar area was rather noisy, but it did not alter our opinion of the food at all. The hostess was very pleasant and accommodating and the waitress was very attentive to our drinks. The food came out very quickly and was fresh. The Caesar salad could have used a touch more dressing but the house greens and Greek salads were spot on. We tried their Crispy Chicken & Ghost Pepper Mac 'N Cheese and it was amazing, packed with flavor and not just heat. Even the youngest went for more tastes and she is not particularly pleased with spicy foods. The Santa Fe Wraps were flavorful and crispy, with an amazing red pepper mayo. As we moved on to the main courses, we each had something different. We will typically do so we can all try each other's foods (yes, we are that family of tasters). The Peppered Tournedos of Beef (which was the special advertised that day) was a melt in the mouth delight. My dish, the 8 oz Filet Mignon was also a taste delight with melt in your mouth beef (as it should be, but you'd be surprised how many people get it wrong). The blue cheese in the potato gratin was a bit strong (but I love blue cheese). Our son had the New York Strip, which did have some gristle but he loved the flavor with the maitre d' butter. Our daughter had the grilled chicken pasta, which was creamy and full of wonderful flavors with well cooked pasta. By this point, we're absolutely stuffed but I wanted to make a full rounded meal and order one dessert for us to all share. So we go for the most popular, the Caramel, Walnut & White Chocolate Bread Pudding. Now, I have never been a fan of bread pudding because of the texture that I have always experienced - mushy bread. But this was PHENOMENAL! It was cooked as a single serving (instead of a scoop from a giant dish of it) which took away that horrible mushiness texture. The cinnamon ice cream was a perfect pair for it to balance out the toffee caramel sauce. This is the perfect place to go for a date or for an amazing casual dining experience. read more

This restaurant is the furthest you can get from a "fine dining" experience as they advertise on their website. They promote being a restaurant for special occasions for birthdays or anniversaries yet they never asked us if we were celebrating anything special. When we organically mentioned to the waitress that it was my 30th birthday she seemed indifferent. I was initially surprised to see reasonable prices on the menu. The crab cakes were mostly bread, in fact they were so dry that we had to ask for lemons and even then didn't eat either of the small portions. I got the filet, which was over cooked and just a poor cut. The spinach was blanched, nothing special. The potatoes overcooked. I had maybe three bites from my entree and the waitress never asked if my food was okay. After experiencing the subpar service and awful food I feel my menu would've been better spent at Regal or another bar establishment in the area. Highly disappointing. read more

I always tend to get the Oriental Salad with chicken or sometimes salmon. It's one of my favorite salads. Their portions are generous. Their bar is amazing. They make some great drinks there. Gentelin's was so delicious! My parents come here very often and always rave about it. We finally went with them for my mom's 60th Birthday and it was fantastic! The atmosphere is very calm and nice and the service was great, especially for our party of 8. My mom loves the French martini, which is reasonably priced at $7. We had the buffalo tots special as an appetizer and my gosh, it was delicious! So much better than we even thought it would be! I had the goat cheese salad and it was good, but not as amazing as I had in my head it would be. I also had the crab cakes and they were great, as was the mayo/aioli served on the plate! My dad had the cowboy ribeye and it had a lot of flavor. They also brought out a complimentary dessert of my mom and Aunt's choice to celebrate their birthdays. They both chose the gooey butter cake and it was so unique! More like a warm custard. It was good, but very rich just like all gooey butter cake.
