So I feel a bit torn about Build-A-Bear. Of course, as a child, I wasn't paying for my bear and had no understanding of the process, so from a 90's 8 year old perspective, this place was great. Flash forward to 2024 and I took my daughter here on her fourth birthday as a special morning outing for us. I found Build-A-Bear much as I had left it in the late 90s. It was clean, but the format was the same, the footprint at Oak Park Mall the same, and it felt similar to what I remembered from childhood. I let my kiddo pick out a "bear" (hers was a Chase dog from Paw Patrol) and we started our journey. I guess the first thing that was sort of a let down for me, is how fast the whole experience was. I feel like for Build-A-Bear to be around for nearly 30 years, it would have seen some innovation to stay competitive with other entertainment options for children. I was dismayed that for a whopping $72 we were in there for maybe 30 minutes, and that is honestly being generous. With such a fun concept, and such an insane price point, I was hoping for something more immersive, and more magical. It felt like we were kind of just moving through a production line. Aside from the obnoxious price point here, my other major quip was with how they upsell children on items for their bear. Asking a four year old if she wants sound for her bear, or a scent, or whatever the extras are - that all cost more money - is insane and unethical. There should be a better system. Sure is an extra 12 dollars going to hurt me? Probably not, but it's gross to me to propose these things to kids that are going to say yes, because they don't understand the concept of money. Ultimately, for the price point I think they should invest in making this a more special experience for children and parents. Think you walk into an actual workshop, there are sounds, you can't see the mall, and as you go through all steps it's a new room with a new environment. Something has to change here to make this a worthwhile destination. I could honestly also see an option where parents and kids pick out what extras they want up front so there is no asking and it's all on your barcode as you move through. The bottom line is that your kid will enjoy it, they are getting a fun new toy! But is the experience of building the bear fun or worth the extra price? Not really. There is a ton of room for improvement here.

We stood around and all the employees kept…read moredoing their thing... it wasn't until we finally approached one that we were able to get started. They have a large variety of things to glaze. We came for a half price studio feed which ended up being $4/ person. Aside from the below average customer service the facility itself smelt incredibly unpleasant. It smelt like a sewer the whole time and the smell never left the whole 90 minutes we were there. Pieces range in all prices- I think they're standard compared to other places. I'd come back if the smell wasn't so potent.

You can't see the options and feel intrusive squeaking by painting customers while they're focused on their pottery. We had some miscommunication on availability of the pottery item we were looking for - coasters/tiles. The employee "helping" sent us off to try and find the item we were looking for rather than assisting us. 2 - Service is bleak at best. These kids don't have any customer service foresight. We were never checked on during our almost 2 hours spent painting there. 3 - Majority of the paint pens were not functioning. Many paint cups were very low volume or empty. No one seemed to be servicing the supplies. 4 - The birthday party in the back space was poorly managed. Back in the day they used to have a host and distribute paints to the kids at the table. I was shocked, and annoyed the kids were allowed to go up and select from all the larger paint selections for the whole shop which continually caused traffic jams for all customers. Being next to the paint area was stressful with lots of people constantly moving around us. On another note, there was no party host from the employees other than getting the kids their pottery. I can't imagine tipping for that "service". 5 - Speaking of tipping - tip apparently is included in any purchase here?? There wasn't an option to enter $0.00 into the CC machine. We had 8 tiles ($7/each - [shocking... and I guess shame on us for not asking how much each cost] + 2 studio fees (a rip off considering we collaborately painted 3 of our 8 items). Our total was $90. HAVING TO pay 15% tip FOR NO SERVICE was bitter icing on a crappy cake. Honestly, not sure I'll be back.

Shout Out to Service Beyond Measure -- All Thanks to Milla…read more Let me be honest. Kids' birthday parties at event venues are usually something I brace myself for, not something I look forward to. I showed up simply to support my friend and celebrate her daughter Olivia, fully prepared for noise, chaos, and a long countdown to cake. Then Milla stepped in and completely flipped the script. From the moment we arrived, Milla set the tone. She greeted everyone with genuine warmth and confidence, the kind that instantly puts both kids and adults at ease. No one was rushed, no one was overlooked. She had a calm command of the room and made it clear she truly cared about the experience we were having. Milla didn't just manage the party, she elevated it. She was patient with the kids, attentive with the adults, and carried a bright, authentic smile the entire time. Not once did it feel forced. Watching her interact with everyone, it was obvious she was raised with strong values and an even stronger work ethic. She went above and beyond in every sense, anticipating needs before they were voiced and making the entire event run effortlessly. I even found myself telling other guests, without hesitation, that I would hire her in a heartbeat. It's funny how sometimes the biggest lesson in customer service comes from the youngest person in the room. Milla turned an event I expected to tolerate into one I truly enjoyed. Service beyond measure wasn't just a phrase yesterday. It was Milla.

I also didn't like that she just picked up the kids without asking them and then felt like kids had to give her a high five / hug but they didn't ask for it. She kept asking for hugs- not appropriate in my mind especially with younger children / any age. It took a long time setting up a party video that played for a few minutes and some of the pictures on it were blurry and only of the same three kids when there were 12 total. The inflatables were okay but felt a little bit dirty and not fully inflated to me. We had fun with all the friends that invited us but I personally would probably not come back on my own or host anything here. The arcade games in the rooms seemed funny placement to me especially since they weren't free and definitely overstimulated with all the toys in the front of the store when you first arrived. Bathroom okay but the pressure of the sink was very high and sprayed all over.
