Indonesian food at its finest! My wife is Indo and we've been to indo we cook indo. This restaurant is as authentic as they come. The curries are amazing, the veggies are fresh and the service is welcoming. My friends and i all love this restaurant. We ordered pretty much the whole menu, its all delicious. Exceeded expectations. I'm a regular visitor to Steamboat; decided to branch out from the breweries / base area on this trip and will definitely be coming back to Sumatera. We got momo, pad thai, basil tauco, and ginger tea - everything was colorful and so flavorful (especially the momo sauce - I ate the leftover with a spoon). As other reviewers have noted, this place takes 'spicy' serously! The ginger tea was especially powerful - I love ginger so I didn't mind the potency, although I was sad that my party of 2 couldn't even come close to finishing the large pot (in addition to the spice, it's quite rich, as it's made with condensed milk). Would only order ginger tea again with a party of 4 or more, but I'll certainly be back to Sumatera to try their other dishes. read more

First things first, the restaurant is past 11th St in what appears to be an alley. Don't get discouraged trying to find the place or by the signage; it is a hidden gem. Oh, and don't be in a rush. There isn't a lot of seating and it is a pretty chill place. I didn't catch our waitresses name but she was amazing. Three of us had dinner here this evening. We ordered Panang Curry, Kwe-Tiaw, and I had the Singapore Noodles. All three dishes were spectacular and the spice levels spot on. The Singapore Noodles were one of the best dishes I have had in recent months. The Panang and Kew-Tiaw were very well received, and devoured, as well. My only regret is not ordering the Martabak the table next to us received as we were waiting for our meals to arrive. It looked absolutely amazing and the diners that ordered raved about it. I guess that gives me my excuse to go back a second time while we are in town for a week of relaxation. If you see a review bitching about how long it took shoot them a reminder that there are in Steamboat, not Vail... So get the F over yourselves and maybe try to enjoy the company of those you are dining with, or even (gasp) the people around you since there are only 5 tables. read more

As our journey to SBS and Strawberry Park Hot Springs came to a close, we decided to check out the local flavor - and this place was atop the gf's list. Surely, it is a hole-in-the-wall type of establishment. It seemed immediately like this would be the weekly takeout haunt if I lived near here. After being ushered into the back to the only remaining table (which was conveniently a 2 top), we were pretty enamored by the sweet chain of Christmas and other assorted lights that lined the walls. After briefly looking at the menu, we discovered they had all of the flavors we wanted. We decided upon the Martabak, because the picture in the middle of the menu looked mighty fine.. and the Panang Curry and Singapore Noodles. The Martabak was honestly one of the best things I've eaten in a while, and I was pretty sure I could've just eaten two orders of that and been happy, but we were happy to see the remaining entrees come out. Both the Panang Curry and Singapore Noodles were fantastic, and right at the tip of too spicy. (The server will ask how spicy you want from 1-5, but after other patrons of the restaurant warned us against anything above 3, I relented and went with 3 for both items. "5 is like putting mace on your food," the waiter said.) When all was eaten, we were happy, and fully satisfied with the experience. When we came to steamboat springs we were not expecting to have many culinary options. We saw the reviews for Sumatera and thought we would give it a try. When we first pulled up it was very small and cozy. Real small place but charming. They have a good variety on the menu. Our food came out quickly and it was top notch. Level 3/5 spicy is the real thing. The flavors were excellent without being overbearing. The food was comparable to any NY Thai restaurant which is my standard. read more

Good choice in downtown area. Food was delicious and service was friendly. We followed Yelp and found this place. Was in a mood for curry with the cold outside. The restaurant was small and has only around 6-8 tables, so we waited for around half an hour. They don't accept reservation by the way. First come first serve. The wait area was so small as well. Not a good choice for someone who's looking to eat quickly and go. Only one server and one cook I believe. They did both to-go orders and dine in. So the food came out pretty slowly. If no patience, I don't recommend. The spicy level 1-5 was pretty hard core. I got 3 which was pretty spicy for my Laksa or I overestimated my capability maybe :) Laksa was great. This place is a must try in Steamboat!! We stumbled upon this restaurant and could not have been happier with our decision. The fish curry (with halibut), spring rolls and nasi gareng were incredible. The service was also fantastic. I have a sensitive pallet for Thai food, and when I found this place on Yelp, I was excited to try the food. Boy, was I impressed! This restaurant had the best Thai food I have eaten in the United States thus far. Our server was incredibly informative about all of the dishes on the menu, and was very kind to my entire family. He seemed just as excited to be serving our food as we were to eat it. We ordered the dumplings and edamame, and they were both delicious. I ordered the Pad Thai, and was definitely impressed with the flavors and spiciness of the dish. My parents ordered the Thai Basil and the Traditional Thai Green Curry, and both were equally delectable. The only downside to this place is that, at some point in the night, they might abruptly stop taking pickup orders, which is slightly weird but probably forgivable, like the better part of my personality. Wow, what a cute little gem Sumatera is! My girlfriend and I were in the mood for a good Thai dinner, admittedly, didn't have high expectations being in the Rockies and all, but found this place on yelp and it looked nice and authentic. I would describe Sumatera as a hole in the Wall with amazing food, the decorative scheme leaves a little to be desired and the layout of the restaurant a little unusual. When you walk in, you are basically in the kitchen, which, is absolutely spotless, so that's a good thing. The dining room has about 6 tables in it, we went during print dinner hour on a Saturday, so had a 15 minute wait, but that's not to big of a put out. I ordered the Yellow Curry with chicken, and was absolutely blown away with the flavor, the coconut curry sauce was bright and sweet, with just the right amount of heat, really spectacular, in fact, I am comfortable saying it is the best Curry I have ever had. My girlfriend has the Miso Soup, which was huge with plenty of veggies, she absolutely loved it! This place is definitely a little hidden gem, don't hesitate to try it. read more

The hour wait for to go food wasn't a problem, but when you go to pick up your order and the waitress complains to you about the number of to go orders isn't the most welcoming service. In regards to the food, curry was served in a regular to go container instead of a bowl, so it has spilled all over the place. It was also very greasy, which is something that I had never seen before in a curry dish. The dude that was our waiter was true bro. It's a little funky place that starts off you enter in and feel like it's a takeout only restaurant. Then the waiter, wearing his long Dickie shorts ushers you through a door into a completely different room devoid of windows but with a water fountain and a sick stereo from 2006 blasting what I assume is Thai music. We were excited to try this restaurant based on the good reviews. We had gone hiking and finished by 8:15pm. We debated whether to call ahead and order for takeout or drive to the restaurant instead. It was a 10 minute drive. We arrived at 8:25pm. We walked to the restaurant to order takeout, and the front-desk person rudely told us that they were closed. This was the biggest disappointment of our Steamboat Springs trip. We've been skiing here for four years straight.... We ordered Pad Thai, and Panang chicken curry - mild sauce. The Panang curry was so spicy hot that my son couldn't eat it. The Pad Thai was lumps of stuck together rice noodles with no sauce, no peanut flavor, and was also so spicy that it was not edible. It was a take out order, and we didn't discover this absolute mess until we got the food to our hotel room. To add insult to injury, it cost $47 We called to explain the issue, and we were told that the chef/owner wouldn't consider fixing it. Great food and great service!! The flavor is very different but extremely delicious. It is more like an Indonesia flavor instead of Thai but very good. The owner, who comes from Indonesia, is the cook who prepare every single dish. So I have no doubt on the authenticity. The seasoning is also very different but flavorful. I really like it. I will definitely visit this place again next time when I visit steamboat. I personally recommend the Martabak and Rendang. The lemon grass flavor in Martabak creates a special but epic flavor. The Rendang, on the other hand, provides a "spicy" balance among all the seasonings. *note: please do listen to the waiter on the spicy level recommendation. First visit here today. I was the first customer for dinner at 5 pm. I was seated promptly. Service was polite and fast. I ordered the Massaman curry. The waitress said, "how spicy do you want it, one to five"? I said "five". She gave me "the look" (yes, I am a blond haired, blue eyed person of northern European heritage).
