At the time, I was very unhappy with my current PCP due to his horrible office staff. Therefore, after a bit of research, I made an appointment with Dr. Retsagi. The practice is very small. His staff consists of a lab tech (I forgot her name) and the receptionist (Rita). Both are absolutely wonderful and always give me a very warm welcome. The only negative about Dr. Retsagi is sometimes he runs a little behind. Don't be surprised if you have to wait a half an hour, but I don't mind. It just shows he is taking his time with patients. As for Dr. Retsagi himself, he is everything a doctor should be - very kind, gentle, and very knowledgeable. He truly cares about his patients and always tells me to call him anytime if I have any problems. For my pre-op testing for the lap band surgery, he left no stone unturned. He carefully reviewed all my lab reports and also ordered some additional tests. He is also extremely fast about returning phone calls in emergency situations. One thing I forgot to mention when I first wrote this review - Dr. Retsagi's business hours are from 12-8PM, which is perfect for all us working people. If you have to reach him in the morning, leave a message on his voicemail and he will get back to you ASAP.

I've been concerned about this in the past, but what convinced me to make this move was the following... About 3 years ago I turned 50yo and asked Dr. Retsagi if I should schedule for a colonoscopy, but with confident assurance he said the a stool smear test was sufficient. I asked him again, and he again restated. Since I did not look forward to the colonoscopy prep (which is, btw, not all that bad as I found out) I went along with his advice. At least once more on my last checkup I repeated my concerns and was again reassured by him. Then, about 3 months ago my heart sank when I looked into my toilet after voiding to see bright red water. The colonoscopy revealed long existing polyps that I had to wait anxiously for 2 weeks to find out were benign. I was furious! For another example, a couple of years ago I complained to him about moderate hearing loss and asked if it's possible I had ear wax. He looked and said I was fine. 6 months later I went to a specialist who exclaimed that I had a lot of ear wax. This specialist told me it was certainly possible for a regular doctor to miss this, so I let it go. My new doctor looked in my ear and told me immediately that I now have ear wax buildup again, even without my complaining about hearing loss. I am through with Dr. Retsagi!

I visited QueensWest Health to attend a breastfeeding clinic hosted there by Heather McFadden. The…read moreclinic was perfect for me. It was attended by four moms and their babies, plus two grandmas. The clinic featured a scale to measure each baby's intake during the session. Heather did a great job of helping each mom with her individual problem, which ranged from very painful nipples, to latching problems, to supply issues - providing specific and helpful tips. She took time to present information useful to all moms, while also enabling some informal sharing between us new mamas at different points. The clinic has been going on for about four months at the QueensWest location, and is currently held at 11am on Fridays. The breastfeeding clinic was also my first time at Queens West Health, which is an LIC neighborhood resource that I'm glad I found. It is the home of the general practitioner / family practice of Dr. Savard and Dr. Cole, and also is home to practitioners from other specialties including massage (Earth + Sky and Balance Spa are co-located at QueensWest) as well as nutrition, pediatric speech therapy, and acupuncture, plus a few more I'm forgetting. I don't currently have a general practitioner in the neighborhood, but next time I need one I'll be visiting QueensWest.

The office is conveniently located right by the 6 train and although the waiting room is small and a little loud (you're seated right across from the receptionists), I've never waited more than 10 minutes for an appointment and I'm always out of the office in about 30-40 min. Dr. Amsterdam always delivers my blood test results within a few days via an online patient portal and also communicates with patients directly via the portal so you can login and ask her questions without having to call the office. She's also helpful with referrals--actually calling me herself to provide me with the names and numbers of specialists to see. I highly recommend her if you need a new primary care physician!

I needed just a simple vaccination because I am traveling next week (a vaccination that my old doctor recommended) yet when I FINALLY got called into the office, I was given a mandatory consultation about what other vaccines I should get. That discussion would be fine had I come in unsure of what I needed, however this 2 minute long discussion ended up costing me $50 on top of the price for the vaccination (another $50) even though on the phone when I booked the appointment, I was told that all I would have to pay for is the shot. This office was disorganized, not particularly friendly, and charged me when they said they were not going to in the past. I do not plan to return.

They then suggested I see this woman who calls herself a doctor. I went to see her and I clearly had laryngitis because I kept coughing and my voice left a lot to be desired. She first mentioned 'oh, so you have laryngitis, but that is not why you are here today...' and completely ignored the fact, not checking my throat and lungs, not asking how long I had had it, etc. In the half hour I was with her she barely made eye-contact, keeping her gaze on the screen... as I later found out, seeking info she lacked. We discussed my thyroid issues and the birth control options before me. We talked about the option of a diaphragm, she is, after all 'a birth control expert' and I asked how it works. She said you stick it in before sex and immediately after sex you pull it out. I asked 'really? immediately after?', she repeated herself and said yes, immediately after. I mentioned that I had read somewhere that in order for it to work it has to remain inside for at least a few hours. She then said she would look it up, she turned to her computer and printed out a page, where it said the diaphragm had to be kept inside at least six hours. She was too wrong to mention. I mentioned I could start using that method after the hormonal period of the current method is over. She said I didn't have to wait for that period to be over, who cares I have hormonal issues, let's mess with them a bit more and interrupt an estrogen dose just because! I asked her if the hormonal birth control had anything to do with my thyroid, and she said it didn't, because, as the all knowledgeable doctor said, there is no scientific fact that hormones are related! I asked her if the fact that I quit smoking at the same time I started with the hormonal birth control had anything to do with the fluctuation in my body... she said it did not... of course, why would it? I mean, nicotine doesn't affect metabolism, does it? I mean, that wouldn't be the reason millions of people use it to lose weight, right? I asked her how effective a diaphragm really is as birth control, she answered, 'well, you can use it if you don't really mind getting pregnant...' really? is that a real answer? She was quite unhelpful and undoctorly. I was beyond appalled when this private practice supposedly has such a high name. I have since then been to another doctor within the same practice who was much more helpful and friendly and actually cared and knew what she was talking about. "DR" Lansen should have her license taken away.

Their offices are clean and the staff is very professional and warm. There are many locations all over the city and it gives me comfort to know if I needed a doctor in a pinch, I could most likely get an appointment on the same or next day. Lab testing is extremely easy to schedule since they have flexible hours and you can just walk in. Lab results can easily be sent to me via email. Prescriptions can be emailed directly to my pharmacist. I love the convenience. My primary doctor, Honore Lansen, is someone who I have been seeing for two years and she has been a tremendous help to me for all sorts of medical concerns. I find her to be very caring, knowledgeable, and attentive. I am one of those patients who sometimes has a million questions, and she makes herself available via email to address my concerns. I feel like I have someone who can look at a problem from all different angles and give me great options from which to choose. She has also put me in touch with other referring doctors to address other issues and she does a great job of pulling everything together and following up. I really feel like I have a partner in my healthcare plan. I never feel rushed when we speak. She always takes the time to explain things to me. It's just a very comforting experience all around. I know I am in good hands.
