First of all, I'm not sure how to leave a review on the website, but I had to speak up because this experience was extremely upsetting. Like many others have said, if I could give zero stars, I would. This is not our first visit to this hospital/clinic. In fact, during our first two visits, the service was great, and I was very happy with how my puppies were treated. However, today's experience was completely different and very disappointing. My 17-year-old son took his 4-year-old husky in for a visit. When the vet tech came in to take down notes, our husky gently jumped up and placed his paw on the table, just trying to say hi. The tech immediately jumped back as if the dog was going to attack--even though my son was holding him securely with a harness. I stepped out of the room, leaving my son to handle the visit, but he came out shortly after looking angry, upset, and disappointed. I asked him what happened, and he explained that the doctor came in, asked a few questions, but never even attempted to greet or gently approach the dog. Both the doctor and the tech stood about three feet away from the husky, clearly afraid. My son reassured them multiple times that the dog wouldn't bite. Instead of showing any care or patience, they brought in a muzzle--not once, but twice--and restrained the dog in a way that made him visibly upset and anxious. Then, as expected, the vet started listing a bunch of tests and procedures, adding up to $1,700-$1,800. To make matters worse, after they left the room, my son overheard them saying things like "stay away from that dog, he's aggressive and will bite." That is not only unprofessional, but completely unacceptable behavior for a veterinary team. I understand that not all animals are predictable and staff safety is important--but if you are that fearful of dogs, maybe this isn't the right field for you. There was no warmth, no compassion, and no effort to make our dog feel safe. This is not the kind of care any pet owner expects. Needless to say, I will not be referring anyone to this clinic again. I'm not sure if it's a new staff or what !! But there's no exceptions to this kind of behavior for a so called " Doctor" we've never seen this doctor before and unfortunately, this visit has made it clear we won't be coming back. best veterinarian and staff! My sweet dog Pepper had a massive tumor in her abdomen, her blood levels looked bad, and Ir didn't like look like she was going to survive. Dr. Metzler was able to do surgery, and was even able to revive Pepper when she died two times on the operating table. The staff was so loving and kind above and beyond, and did everything they can to save pepper! It has been two weeks, pepper is getting her stitches out today! It is amazing for 13-year-old dog to survive such an ordeal, she would not have survived without the amazing talented doctor and staff. But.....maybe they just didn't wanna see my 180lb brown butt standing there like an idiot. And I chose not to say anything or walk out before paying (since they didn't seem to wanna get paid) because I woulda been the bad guy and all I would've gotten was an "I'm sorry - I didn't see you there" or an "I didn't know what you were standing there for". They just straight up ignored me and looked past me like they didn't want me there. Didn't think I'd get treatment like that & of all places a pet facility. I remember the exact same thing happening to me at a wealthy resort outside of Austin, but I'm sure everyone has gone through something like this. And I'm not pulling the race card, but I am saying that's some pretty crappy customer service (unless your the right customer). Seen in November to get estimate and inquire about a spay for one dog and a teeth cleaning for the other. Got their annual exam and labs while there. Entire visit was to address stinky breath and spay. We discussed surgery. After shopping around and finding comparable prices, I tried to get them scheduled asap. They couldn't get us in until after the holidays. They were that backed up. On day of surgery, I was told, I must get three more vaccines for both dogs. I asked why the vet didn't mention a few weeks earlier when I was asking for the surgeries and in the office. The lady at the desk shrugged. I asked if the vaccines would protect them or other dogs if given same day as the surgery. They said "no" but said it was their policy that no dog could have surgery without them. Because they were giving vaccines, they then charged for another wellness exam because it had been a few weeks. This is in addition to the charge for a pre surgery exam and labs on the same day. I asked for the owner or the clinic manager to call me and they didn't. The receptionist called me when they were ready to be picked up and told me the owner wasn't interested in talking to me and the office manager wasn't in. Adding vaccines I didn't want and $200 worth of charges to a $1500 bill is not make or break but the shadiness in which this was done is unacceptable. Why wait till surgery, why give unnecessary meds, why double charge visit, and why not take the time to explain for a customer of 6 years who spent $2000. They got my money/now I run. Update, the dog that was spayed had nausea/vomiting after the surgery, could have been vaccines, surgery, or pain meds. They insisted I bring her in and then charged me another $200ish to take her off pain meds (they said she didn't really need them) and give her a probiotic. read more

I was able to check in easily and got back to a room within about 30 minutes the staff was incredibly kind and helpful. Once back on the room the vet came in quickly and was so kind and gentle with my chameleon. She was able to help diagnose him with an infection on his nose gave him a shot and showed me how to keep up the shots at home for him to clear up. Compared to a lot of other places that wanted to change $300 just for the visit they were only $70. Great experience for me and my Obi now he can be one with the force again soon lol read more

I was very pleased with my first visit to Summerfields. We recently added a tortoise to the family and wanted to get him screened for parasites. Often, vets that claim to see exotic pets don't truly understand the husbandry of different species and kind of lump their recommendations together or give outdated advice. That wasn't the case with Dr. Hammer. Not only was he knowledgeable, kind, and patient, but he also has tortoises of his own. As a former veterinary technician and hospital manager, I appreciate the cleanliness of the hospital and the little touches in the lobby and waiting room that told me this practice still is privately owned. A while back, one of our neighbors, who also recommended our previous vet, switched her allegiance to Summerfields. We have the utmost respect for her opinion, so when she told us about Summerfields, we listened. Edit: I think one of the reasons was they have their own lab, vs. having to send things out. This makes turnaround quicker. Fast forward a bit, and now one of our cats (Marco) is peeing outside his box. Cats are fastidious creatures, so this is unusual. The first thing, on nearly every Internet search page, we read said, "Take you cat to the vet immediately!" Turns out urinating outside the box is a sign of distress, not a protest as I first thought! I call, explain what's up, and get an appointment for the next day (in the morning). Next morning, into the carrier Marco goes. At the vet a sample is taken, and it turns out Marco had a bladder infection. Poor guy. He's prescribed and given a course of antibiotics. About a week later and he's as good as new (and peeing where he is supposed to). A follow-up appointment confirmed that the infection is gone. Oh, one other symptom: Marco was initially more vocal than usual too, but we mistook this as hunger. Marco is a bit of a Garfield when it comes to food. Bad humans we are. Sorry Marco, we didn't listen. Staff was friendly and attentive. I was pleased with the level of interaction and would not hesitate to bring Marco, or Polo, back (but I hope I won't have to). I don't recall what the final bill came to, but vet fees always surprise me. That's not to say they were unreasonable, just I did not know what to expect. Euthanasia gone horribly wrong! My brother & I had an 18 yr old cat named Izzy. In his final days he showed very little interest in food/water, & started showing signs of labored breathing. My brother has no experience with this & was very hesitant in having Izzy put down. His fear was that it would be traumatic for Izzy. I regret it now, but I convinced him to go through with assuring him that it was a quick, & peaceful process. The front-desk staff at Summerfield were very professional & caring. No complaints. After being escorted to our room, we sat & waited for the Dr.. My brother was very anxious & sad, but I kept reassuring him that Izzy would feel no pain or discomfort. Dr. Meyers walks in with his assistant, & from the beginning, he displayed no real sympathy for our situation. He explained he'd first give Izzy a sedative, & later a 2nd dose to finalize things. He gave the shot, & explained he'd be back in 10 min to give the final dose once Izzy's fallen asleep. With Izzy on the table in front of us, my brother & I were left alone to say our goodbyes. About a min later, Izzy suddenly sprang up w eyes wide open & an energy we've not seen from him in days! Izzy began to meow frantically, thrashing around & fell off the table crashing into the ground! Losing control of his bladder, his legs kept slipping out from under him as he tried to stand on ever-weakening legs, desperately moving in any direction that might provide relief. The look in Izzy's eyes was of pure terror! The sedative he was given was killing him, he was feeling everything, and we were watching it! My brother & I were in absolute shock. I ran out the room to get help! The front desk lady was quick to respond & ran for the doctor. When I returned to our room, my brother had Izzy back up on the table unresponsive. Dr. Meyers & his assistant both came in shortly after me. Again emotionless, he said, "Yeah, his breathing was already quite labored when we weighed him. It looks like the first shot did the job" as if implying he knew this might happen. Dr. Meyers began checking for a heartbeat, & Izzy let out one final pitiful faint cry. Man, it was heart-wrenching to hear! Like a, "why'd you do this to me?" sort of cry. The sound is still stuck in my head. I feel horrible. Not only for Izzy who suffered, but for the brother whose trust I feel I betrayed. Dr. Meyers then informed us that Izzy barely had a pulse, & that he'd give him the 2nd shot. After multiple failed attempts, he said, "Looks like I'm going to have to give it straight into the kidney." I stopped him and asked, "Is this something we're not going to want to see?", and he replied, "If you don't want to" and proceeded. There was no sense of sympathy from this man whatsoever!--Why?! Why couldn't you have at least pretended to be sympathetic!? We really could have used that, but we got nothing! The assistant was the only one that had any sort of look of sorrow on her face. At least SHE was in the moment, & recognized our sorrow & discomfort. The Dr. was detached completely. At the time, I said nothing about this experience because I was in shock, but after having processed what happened over the past few days, I can say that this was grossly mishandled, & I regret ever taking Izzy here. The reason we went was to peacefully say goodbye to our family pet of 18 yrs, & what we got instead were front row seats to his traumatic execution, not to mention my brother's loss of trust in me. I'm sick over this! Oh, and to add salt on the wound, I paid money for this. RIP, Izzy. We will miss you read more

We have used this place several times based on a recommendation from a friend. The first time was for a pregnancy for our young female golden retriever. They did good in the check ups and monitoring and it showed that the doctor truly cared. That pregnancy ended up with an Emergency C-section that cost us a little over $3,000. They took great care of our girl but at a great cost as well. The last time I brought our young male for a consult about a foot injury and I was given an estimate first for x-rays and a check up. They then took extra x-rays and charged me for them as well. The Original estimate was about $250, but the final bill was over $420. This isn't a veterinarian clinic but a animal hospital. We take our pets to another veterinary clinic for the normal shots and checkups. This place is good for an emergency but I don't recommend it for everyday stuff. It is expensive. Expect long waits And don't be surprised when there are extra charges. They always have them!! read more

We had the absolute worst experience at Summerfields. We recently brought in our brand new puppy (brand new dog owners-who we're excited to learn all about taking care of our new puppy). We made an appt after reading good reviews for a puppy/new patient exam. I was quoted $50 for the exam when making the appointment, which seemed completely reasonable. We had recently adopted the puppy and so she had already received her first round of vaccines and was spayed only two days prior to our appt. Upon entering the exam room, the vet tech weighed her and then said the doctor would be in soon for the exam. I can't remember the doctor's name, however upon her waking in and introducing herself, I was excited to ask all of our questions. In our online paperwork, it was clearly stated that her history was an adoption from a shelter along with her vaccine records and that she was spayed two days prior. When the doctor came in, after introducing herself she listened to our puppy's heart/lungs and looks in her ears. She asked if we'd ever cleaned yer ears, I responded with "no, we just adopted her yesterday." Upon feeling on her stomach she asked if she had been spayed. When I told her yes, she seemed shocked by the way our playful puppy behaved that she was only two days post op. She asked how potty training was, again I reiterated we had only had her one day, which was again....in our new patient paperwork. Immediately afterwards the doctor began walking backwards toward the door as if she wasn't open to any of our questions. With her hand literally on the door knob as if she was trying to hurry out, I felt as if my list of questions weren't at all important to her. As new puppy owners, questions such as how much should she be eating based on her weight, what should we be feeding her, what are some tips for potty training, how do I clean her ears, being a mixed breed we were curious as to what the vet's thoughts were on how big she's be based on her age, give us a better idea of her age based on her physical assessment....and more. We didn't get to ask any of our questions as the doctor continued to hold the door knob as if she was ready to rush out. My two children were with us and even mentioned on the way home how odd that seemed. So we left after spending no more than 6-7 minutes in that exam room and then paying $50 for a doctor to listen to our puppy's heart/lungs and look at her ears and not even getting an opportunity to ask any of our questions. I was disappointed, disheartened and frustrated with our experience that we had looked forward to all day! I will not be returning and I will not be referring any friends or family to this establishment. It's a shame that such an exciting time for our family and being so eager to learn all about her and how we can take care of her best....was shattered by a doctor who rushed us, who felt our questions weren't important enough to take a minute to answer to reassure us and we learned absolutely nothing! They sure did try to sell us a $25 bottle of ear wash on our way out though! How about, show us and teach us how to clean her ears first and then we will buy your $25 bottle! I will never be back! I've been here a couple of times only bc they are open later. Thankfully, I haven't had anything major happen with my dog. The people at the desks never seem happy to see animals when they come in. I know this may be a weird complaint, but I would think that workers at a vet's office should at least want to greet, pet, or do a little doting on animals. They are expensive. I was dog sitting and the pup swallowed a rawhide. She was throwing up and eating grass like crazy the next day. I called asking for advice and the receptionist said "just come in, it's only $53." I did go in because I was scared for the pup. I should have calmed down and saught out more advice. She was fine by the time we got there. The vet just felt her stomach and said that she couldn't feel the rawhide in there. She then went on to give me two options. 1- nausea pills and shot for $200 or 2- x-raysfor $400. I decided to wait till the following day to see if it continued since she seemed fine by then. So I paid the $53 just to be told that they couldn't feel a Rawhide in her stomach. And there is no such thing as "Just $53." That would be about 7 or 8 hours of work at the minimum wage rate. I ended up calling a friend's vet that evening. It was after hours and their voicemail gave me the choice of two phone numbers. I could call the animal emergency hospital in Grapevine or the office vet who would return calls until midnight. I left a message for that vet and he called me back within a couple of minutes. His name is Dr. James and he asked me a bunch of questions, spoke to me for a while, and gave me excellent advice. I have never been to his office or invested any money in his business, but he took time to completely help me because he cares about animals. I know where I am going from now on. My Lhasa passed away at 12yrs old due to cancer and my Pekingese passed away due to old age at 18. So they been taking care of my dogs for a very long time along with what I do at home. I am now in my 20's and I am taking my own dogs here now. The staff has known me for years since I was a little girl. Dr Metzler is good, she's been there for awhile, I believe there are maybe 2 other doctor who are great as well. They keep the place very clean.
