One of the best nurseries in town-and I've been to a few with Mom. Every time we visit, it's always well-maintained, well-stocked and watered. The flower section is my favorite section to go, because the friendly staff makes sure it stays watered and vibrant. With this particular chain of nurseries, it seems like every location has its high and low points, and no two stores are entirely the same thing. With this Bell Road location, more often than not, I used to rank it somewhere in the middle bottom of the pack, at least in my semi-regular rotation. Unfortunately, with the closer of my favorite location (Bethany Home), I've found myself spending more time here on Bell Road, so I decided to finally give it a review. As with most nurseries that I end up reviewing, my primary interest is typically agave, so there's a definite slant in that direction. For this location in particular, I've actually found a somewhat inconsistent experience, as compared with other locations. Typically, but not always, they have had the least variety and fewest specimens of agave, and were slow to get in anything new. That's still true to some extent, but lately I've seen a few things come in that, thankfully, are giving me a renewed appreciation for this place. As an example, there's quite a nice batch of some oddball, typically hard to find agave currently sitting out, just behind the green house/shade house. You'll find A. mateo, A. 'Red Margin' and A. "Neptune's Spear" among others, including A. parryi v. parryi and some A. americana. Those first three are particularly rare in the trade and definitely not common. Most of the ones floating around anymore are overgrown holdovers from the now long-defunct "Shady Oaks" growers, which are probably popping up on the market now as the result of some middleman distributor clearing their old inventory. Not that that's a bad thing, after all, I've purchased some of all three, but it will likely be a long time before these are available again, if they are at all. If you're in the market for any of those, or just want something unusual, I suggest you acquire them while you still can. Some others you'll find here, not nearly as rare though, would be A. seemanniana ssp. pygmaea, A. 'little shark', A. 'Blue Glow', A. ocahui, A. guiengola, and A. titanota. In the past, I've seen A. zebra as well, as well as A. 'Royal Spine' and A. gentryi 'jaws', but none of those for some time now. There are also, typically, A. murpheyi, sometimes the variegated form. Most agave at this location are healthy, but I've seen a few that I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. I can't say for certain if they had mites or some other issue going on, but they looked bad enough that I would not have put them out, were it me. Additionally, agave tend to be placed somewhat strangely here. I will sometimes find full-sun loving agaves tucked away in the shade house/green house, while other times, more tender specimens are left to fry outside in the blistering sun. It leaves one with the impression that perhaps those tending to the agave know not what they do, but it's unfortunate because I've seen more than few that rotted away (or baked to a crisp, or both) as a result. Ultimately, this place is worth checking out for agave, certainly, but be cognizant of the limitations at this location. Stock does not change very often or very dramatically when it comes to agave, so once you've seen it all, it's not really worthwhile to make repeated trips, because it could be many months before anything changes. Staff are friendly, but I don't think any of them are serious experts on agave in particular. Other things, yes, certainly they know their stuff, but from what I see and how they are grown, it seems obvious that agave is not their forte. And you know what, that's probably OK, since agave are only a small percentage of what is sold here, but definitely calibrate your expectations accordingly. read more

Rude, unhelpful customer service. High prices. I bought 4 small plants and paid over $100. But they said plants are guaranteed and the cashier set up an account for me so receipts aren't needed. So when one of them died so I went to exchange it. The girl couldn't find my account and said "there's nothing I can do for you." Even though the plant had a summer winds sticker on it along with price she was unwavering. When I asked what my options were she provided none. Instead she kept saying said there's nothing she can do because she couldn't find my account. I would suggest if want to support local but also want a good deal with a guarantee on your plant that most Home Depots now sell plants from the Plant Stand which is local and offers more variety. Do not recommend wasting your time or gas or energy here. Many other local options are much more compassionate and accommodating. read more

Recently I have been on the hunt for indoor plants and pots to brighten up the new pad. Place was a bit sparse and uninspiring when it comes to indoor plants and pots. Perhaps this is where not to go when you are not familiar with gardening?? There was no one to greet me or asked to provide assistance. Mind you this was a Tuesday late morning venture not a weekend or before closing... Not a place for a novice? I went to summerwinds nursery today, and I am sorry (really sorry) to say that I was not very impressed. I was expecting bigger, better, more. But I do that sometimes; it is like preparing to go see a movie. I build it up in my head to be so great that it just does not stand a chance in real life. Not too bad though. Most of the plants were healthy. Prices were average. I could not find the plant I was looking for, so selection... IDK, I guess it could have been better for a nursery. I did leave with 2 bags of premium soil (fish/seaweed/non-slug soil!) so that was cool. I was hoping that they would have had the store conveniently laid-out & sectioned into xeriscape/water maintenance needs. But it did not seem that way - though some of the plants had tags with their needs on them and there were some helpful signs. I found myself confused and picking through cacti that were mixed with and seated along side water loving plants. I would have loved to walk into a xeriscape section and start picking out plants; instead, I had to pick through ALL of the plants one-by-one and read the tags (and not all had tags) to find the types I was looking for. I guess it is really not a place for a novice. They weren't very busy today. After being there for about 30 minutes, someone finally asked me (when I was leaving) if I needed assistance. She was sort of helpful. I need to landscape the pool area and start a veggie garden. I asked if someone could assist me in picking out the proper plants (ya know which are best for the pool area and the light/water it gets) and tell me a little about their growing habits, needs and etc. She said someone there - might - be able to help me with that. Really? Might? At least, she was honest. I will not be going back. I plan on checking out a few more nurseries and this time with - not - so high expectations. Sorry Summerwinds. I am thinking Sun City is void of any nursery because everybody's grandma was getting her green on at Summerhills. Still lots of fun no matter who is there, I just wish they had on this occasion more variety of veggies , celebrity and (yawn) better boy tomatoes just don't get the old blood pumping like a Cherokee purple or zebra stripe. This is a great place to pick up basics for the garden , they have good advice and helpful customer service , they even brought my plants out the car for me. But as far as anything that make me excited and intrigued this didn't get me really in the mood garden- wise. Prices aren't cheap so be ready to fork over the big bucks.. read more

Two years back I needed to replace my dead ocotillo so I purchased a new ocotillo from Summerwinds that never came to life and was dead. I saved my receipt and Summerwinds said I could have a new ocotillo. All these ocotillos where behind the wall behind the nursery and they all looked dead (it looked like a trash area for dead and sick plants) but the salesman assured me that they were alive. My second one from Summerwinds never came to life as well. Yesterday I went back to Summerwinds to possibly get my third or second replacement from Summerwinds but again all the ocotillos where behind the wall I guess waiting for Jesus to revive them. I did look at a few other nursery's and the hippy boy at the nursery near 17 at least was honest and said he didn't know if his ocotillos were alive or dead none had signs of life. The ocotillos at one of the moon valley locations were the same and half priced. I didn't give Summerwinds one star for the ocotillo experience although they deserve it. Most plants they sell are nice and I would shop here for a lantana or something like that. The three stars is more than fair. It seems like you most likely will get STUCK with a dead ocotillo unless you give someone a B.J. at most nurseries around here. read more

Visited today for the first time. Beautiful nursery as I took my time to walk around for future visits. When I was finally ready and needed assistance, it was a very rude experience. The cashier came over to assist me with some weed control questions; she called someone else for help told me someone would be by shortly to help me. I waited several minutes, no one came and the cashier station (which was not busy) completely ignored me. When I finally got someone's attention, the employee was not very friendly or helpful at all and he even suggested I should take my business elsewhere. The selection is amazing! The quality of the plants is superb! The staff are friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable. If the person you ask doesn't know, they will call another staff member that does! If you kill a plant (accidently of course), they will happily replace it with your receipt and help you to keep the new one alive and well. They have a super selection of beautiful pots, potting soil, fertilizers and other yard and garden necessities and frills. I won't buy plants anywhere else anymore. read more

Regarding Summerwinds on Bell - I moved back to Phoenix a year and a half ago and due to their customer loyalty program which tracks my purchases I know I've spent over $1,000 there and I have been happy with every single plant. I purchase both landscape type plants and sprouts for my extensive vegetable gardening hobby. Staff is friendly, asks if I need help and answers my questions. They've given me great advice on what plants to purchase. If I ask for a certain plant that isn't in stock they give me their best guess as to when I can expect to see it. I've taken in photos of plants in my yard that aren't thriving and they give me advice. I took in leaves from a Hong Kong orchid tree that I purchased elsewhere and they told me how to amend my soil. I took in a house plant that looked sick and they helped me with that as well. They also have a great selection of amendments and soils and offer advice on which to use. I told him what space I had and what look I wanted and he showed me around to all of the plants that would work. For goodness sake, people, this is an urban nursery in a commercial area on Bell Rd. It isn't out in the middle of nowhere with acres and acres to offer that sort of selection. For what it is - a nice, clean, modest sized nursery with helpful staff- this place is great. Sure they may not have many exotic items, but for all of the basics and more it is hard to beat the convenience of shopping here. I'm a bit of a noob gardener. So I need all the help I can get. Fed up with the no-nothing drones at those big box home improvement stores, I sought out a local nursery for my gardening needs. That's how I came to Summer Winds. I've driven by it many times on my dreaded weekend shopping trips along the Bell Road gauntlet, and never thought much of it. Whizzing by, it looks like not much more than a roadside stand. But if you make your way inside, it unfolds like, dare I say, a blossom. It's comprised of room after room, patio after patio of plants, pots, supplies, and decor. I spent nearly an hour just wandering around. All I needed was something organic to battle the bugs munching on my lettuces. I brought in some sample leaves and soil. The woman told me I had cabbage loopers, and a mold problem. Apparently, I'm over-watering. She also directed me to the appropriate treatment solution. Beat that, orange-aproned dolts! Oh, and keep an eye out for the kittehs wandering throughout the property. Disappointing at best. I came here in search of a cactus I could pot, and I found a scarce, drab, poorly cared for section of cacti. For a place that sells plants of all varieties, this one seems to care the least about the plants and cacti they're trying to sell. Not only that, there were few employees I noticed on site, none were tending to the plants or customers when I saw them. Spend your money at a place where the plants and cacti show they're loved. read more

Owner was very knowledgeable about his plants. We discussed several options for a sunny spot that has historically frozen bougainvillae and cooked jasmine. Even told us what aisle at Home Depot to get irrigation parts. This was mother's day gift applied out of town for me. But if I need more plants for mom, I know where to go read more

Love this nursery! The prices are competitive and comparable with big box stores but the quality and care they put into all their plants far exceeds the competition. They carry rare and hard to find indoor and outdoor plants that you don't see in other nurseries in the greater Phoenix area. Just got into gardening last year and summer Winds is right up the street for me. I like that they have a good selection of healthy transplants available for the veggie garden. I have even been able to find many heirloom varieties! the girl in charge of the veggie area didn't seem to know the answer to a lot of our questions, but was very friendly and helpful with what she did know (to be fair, we do ask some more difficult ones) We have also been able to pick up lady bugs, and praying mantis for natural pest control. It was alot of fun seeing the baby mantis growing up in our garden this year! Prices seem good to me. A little higher than a big box store, but I am willing to pay a little extra for local shops read more
