I was phenomenally fortunate, for my 1st vision exam in 3 1/2 years, to be seen by Dr. Sumner. I have been unemployed for a number of months now and have been subsisting off Medicaid -- Dr, Sumner's office miraculously (I don't think that adjective is an exaggeration) accepts that!! I made an appointment; and the day of my appointment, was able to shift my arrival time earlier 30 minutes -- that was nice that they could make that happen!! I used to think I received pretty superlative eye care at Lenscrafters; despite their being a chain, I received about 5-6 eye exams there. Apparently I didn't know what "superb" eye care was, because I received no less than 10 separate exams there; possibly an eye dozen if you include the examinations by the doctor himself. Dr. Sumner has the demeanor and carries himself like a respected, kindly old grandfather; he is very polished and meticulous and leaves no potential detail unturned. Despite my fretting about what exams Medicaid would cover, he found a way to bill everything to Medicaid. His staff was professional and courteous. My 1 regret was that I could not get the high index Rx he wrote up for me covered at the optical store in his office; that would have set me back the better part of a thousand dollars, I'm pretty sure. I had to flee to a chain store to get it filled out and am still waiting for the finished products. If Dr. Sumner senses that you are a higher-risk candidate (for example, diabetic with a risk of diabetic retinopathy; or have other corneal issues, genetic issues or dry eyes), he will go the extra yards to make sure you get the best possible eye care -- and in my mind, that makes him a rarity: 100% concerned with health, financial remuneration comes secondarily. When I get "real" medical insurance again, I hope I can select him to be my optometrist -- we should all be that lucky. read more

Very disappointed with my experience. The first time I came in, I specifically scheduled for a certain type of plans/services, but my appointment was scheduled incorrectly. When I tried to address the issue, the receptionist, David, spoke to me as if it was somehow my fault instead of trying to help resolve the mistake. The whole experience felt unprofessional and frustrating, especially as a first-time patient/customer. I expected better communication and customer service. I live over 30 minutes away. I told him to not to reschedule my appointment. He said bye, with a very rude smirk and laughed as I walked out. I work in healthcare. I manage eight different offices. I am new to Denver and needed my annual eye exam, so I tried Sumner Vision because they accept my insurance. The entire experience was great from the front desk to the nurse and doctor! The doctor gave a thorough exam and explained her decisions with my treatment. I didn't feel that they were trying to push any services or products on me at all. Allen, Barb, and the entire staff provided outstanding customer service! I had my eye exam only nine days ago and my glasses arrived already. My eye exam went flawlessly and the doctor took the time to explain everything in great detail to include the exam of the interior of my eyes. Pretty phenomenal set up. I took a while looking at glasses, lenses and accessories etc. Allen did a great job of explaining all the different options to me and what my insurance paid for and my deductible. I always opt for the high-end glass, coatings, and this time added blue light blocker to help protect me from computer and phone screens. As soon as I tried the glasses on today I was like wow I've been missing all this for the last year was my old glasses! The glasses fit great, and the clip on polarized glass that Alan recommended works phenomenal. So now no need for a separate pair of glasses and sunglasses! Wrote a previous review, but also noticed that several people bring up dry eyes and needing a special procedure to correct that, much like an operation... It seems like Dr. Sumner and his clinic tell that to everybody! I went in for a peripheral eye test, and the first thing they told me was I needed an operation to correct my dry eyes. Well I have heard of terrible results with that and immediately said no thank you, but resented the doctor pushing me to have the work done. I guess it involves blocking your tear ducks or some thing, but "no thank you... I'll deal with what God gave me & take my chances(!) ...And to me it felt like just going through another sales pitch on a long list of what we all could possibly need - or don't need in this case. I'm so lucky that I found this place on Zocdoc!! Barbara is friendly and very knowledgeable about all parts of the practice, Dr. Sumner is a very professional and knew exactly what I needed to improve my vision issues. There a wide variety of glasses frames to pick from, and Allen will make sure that he takes care of you, and price matched the price for contacts from a competing website. The practice is small and intimate, which ensures that you are going to get some great individualized care. I can't wait to receive my glasses and contacts, this has been long overdue. Was able to book an appointment on a Saturday since I work full time during the week, and if paying outright is an issue for you, they accept care credit and will do everything that they can to work with you. 10/10 recommend this place! read more

I just returned home from a visit from this location, and I will never return. I chose this provider because they are in-network with Davis vision, are close to where I live, and have excellent reviews on Google. Dr. Sumner is professional and friendly, and I believe I received a quality eye exam. I told them that I would like daily contacts and possible bifocal lenses for my current frames. I was a little surprised to learn during the appointment that I would have to return a week later for a contact lens fitting appointment. After the exam, the doctor sat me down in front of a creepy eye-glass salesman who spent an hour trying to sell me a new pair of frames with lenses that have a scratch coating, blue-light filter, and other things of no interest to me. I explained that I'm not too fond of lens-coatings because it is impossible to keep my lenses clean. He insisted that the blue-light filter is a must-have and that I wouldn't be able to see without it. I should point out that this gentleman had his glasses polarized and it made him look super creepy. He then totaled it all out and informed me that they were $1000 glasses, but I would only have a copay of $250. I told him that pair I already have would do and I just wanted contacts. Today, I returned for the contact lens fitting, and, once again, after the appointment, the doctor sat me down in front of the same eyeglass salesman. He asked me if I would like to pay for the prescription right away. I told him that I discussed with the doctor that I would try them out for a week to see if they were comfortable. He proceeded to charge me an additional $160 for the contact lens fitting. I told him I was surprised about the price. He asked me how much I would expect to pay for a contact lens fitting. I told him that I had never spent more than $90 on a contact lens fitting. He said, "Ok, $90 then. I again inquired about the cost of everyday bifocal lenses with no crap on them. I was then subjected to another half-hour showing me copays on lenses and coatings. At one point during his presentation, the man stopped to wipe boogers out of his nose and rub them around his face, which I found to be very unsettling. After he showed me the copays, I told him I was interested in everyday bifocal lenses with a $50 copay. He then tells me that the copays wouldn't apply if I purchased the contact lenses. At this point, I stood up and said that I felt like I was wasting my time and that I was leaving. Asking why, and I explained that I just felt like he was trying to sell me glasses and lens coatings that I didn't want. He then explodes into outrage and yells at me for insinuating that he is dishonest. I told him I just wanted to pay for my exam and leave. He then calls me rude and tries to insult me by telling me I stunk like marijuana the last time I was in. I said, "excuse me? I'm a customer and you shouldn't be talking to me like that." He told me to read the Google reviews and see that they are a great provider and that I am an ass for accusing him of trying to sell me things I don't want or need. I paid for the exam and got the hell out of there. I'm not going to return to this provider. read more

Dr. Sumner is a fine optometrist, but the remainder of the staff has been consistently unhelpful and at times rude. I called last week to see about purchasing a pair of prescription sunglasses. The associate who answered my call began the call by needlessly reassuring me that the person in her previous position had left and that things at the office were much improved. She said she could meet me anytime the next day, and we agreed to meet in the morning. The next day, I waited at the office for thirty minutes, but no one arrived. I later spoke with this associate on the phone. She apologized for getting stuck in traffic. I felt uncomfortable with her pushing me to come in to the office to buy the new pair of glasses after I had been left hanging that morning. I asked her to e-mail my prescription and she said she would that day. Fast forward to a week later, I have still not received my prescription. I called and spoke to another associate who said she had personally e-mailed it last week. I checked my spam inbox to no avail. I called back, she adopted a rude tone. "I can e-mail it again but I told you I already e-mailed it last week." I said that was fine, and if it didn't come through I would pick it up from the office. After never receiving a second email, I went to the office to pick it up. The prescription had been received but the doctor was out and unable to sign it. I don't know if the emailed version would have also been signed, but I was turned away and told the doctor would be back in 30 minutes. An hour later, the doctor still had not returned and my prescription still not received. In total so far, I've emailed twice, left three voicemails, made three trips in person, and been on the phone five times with someone from the office and I STILL don't have my prescription. I should have gone to law school so I can bill hourly. I feel like a crazy person. Why is this so difficult? Shop at Dr. Sumner's if you would like to waste your time and feel like you're losing your mind. read more

If you have the choice, go somewhere else. The staff was courteous before and during, but after my appt no one took the time to go over the results of my eye exam. They said my glasses were going to be ready in 7-10 days. On day 10 I called them myself and they told me they had been ready for a while and that someone called me. Well, I doubt that and if they did, why wouldn't they leave a message? The girl I spoke with said she was going to be there until 4 that day so I decided I was going to leave work early and pick them up, but when I got there she was already gone. If you know someone is coming why not give them a courtesy call to let them know you are leaving. Overall, the doctor was ok, but it feels like they got my money and don't really care what happens after that or if I even get these glasses. I'm not even sure I needed them since I have 20/20 vision, but the frustrating thing is that no one is trying to get these glasses to me. I guess when you are paying these kinds of prices you expect more from a doctor's office. read more

I went to Sumner Vision as my doctor had retired and this place was right across the street from where I live. Dr. Sumner was very nice; however, there was a lot of testing recommended; some that insurance would pay for, and some not. I had previously had RK surgery so I figured it wouldn't hurt to have some additional testing done. I left with a $500 package that included vitamin E, tea tree oil, eye drops and an eye mask. All of which could have been purchased at Walgreens for less than $100. I felt pressured by Allen when I was picking out frames. He kept pointing out all the expensive Paris frames, which I had no interest in. He talked me into a frame I was unsure about. I ended up going back the next day to pick something out on my own, and that worked for me at my price. I picked up my glasses and the distance view was perfect. I wore them for 2 weeks and the reading just wasn't going to work. I went back and they sent them back to the lab. When I got them back, I couldn't see distance or reading and I asked Allen to have the blue block removed, because I saw purple/blue shadows around letters when reading. The next time I got them back from the lab, they were still terrible, so Dr. Sumner did another refraction. He seemed annoyed and blamed my RK surgery. Once again I got them back and could see nothing. I'm pretty sure they didn't even send them to the lab, because the blue block was still present as well. I just took the glasses and left. I'm now going back to my previous location to start over. I basically spent about $2000 at this place and got nothing. I just want a refund! Be cautious! read more

I began visiting this office as it was conveniently located in Cherry Creek near my job. Now that I live in Commerce City and work in Brighton, I still make the trip because the office is superb. My husband also receives his eye care here. The website and self-scheduling options are awesome! The office is always welcoming and kind, and I never wait long. Dr. Sumner and the staff are all so patient with me; I'm a terrible eye patient, being very sensitive (can't. stop. blinking.). As an individual with high blood pressure, Dr. Sumner has always been diligent and caring about making sure my eyes were healthy in regards to this condition. There are often additional tests I must go through, but the prices are more than reasonable - even when I was on not-as-great insurance. read more

My husband and I started coming to this office a few years ago because it is right by our house in Cherry Creek. I am new to wearing glasses. Getting older...Sniff! Sniff! I've been to one other optometrist close to my work in the DTC area, and this office is infinitely better. The location is better, the office is cleaner, and the staff is much friendlier. Also, they have a better selection of eyeglasses. I love their website, they send multiple confirmation emails and texts, which is very helpful to a forgetful person like myself. The staff are always friendly, and I never have to wait very long to see the Doctor. I recently received contacts for the very first time, and they were very patient with teaching me how to put them in and take them out. They are also very helpful with selecting eyeglasses too. All in all, I'm very happy with this doctor and his staff. I can't imagine switching to anyone else! read more

If it weren't for the incompetence of the front office, we would still be going here. My husband had made an appointment for himself and our son many months in advance. He called a few days prior to the appointment to cancel my son's appointment, but TO KEEP HIS OWN. The front desk woman confirmed that only our son's was cancelled but my husbands was still on. My husband made the thirty minute drive from SE Aurora to Cherry creek only to be told that his appointment had been canceled and that they were completely full that day. My husband was outraged because he had double checked that his appointment was still on. The front desk woman was apologetic but offered no help. Had Dr. Sumner walked by and seen my husband upset at the front desk, he would have most taken him back, but the front desk woman didn't even offer my husband the chance to talk to Dr. Sumner. I'm the lady nenes Tracey has no knowledge of selling glasses and everyone here will charge you for doing test with the" state of the art equipment " with out acknowledging you that these with cost you an arm and a leg. Last Friday evening, I started seeing a sliver of light in my left eye. With a family history of retina troubles and a plane ticket to Miami Beach early Sunday morning, I was very concerned to make sure my eye wasn't about to go down, big-time. On Saturday morning, I called Dr. Sumner's office on a referral from another highly rated optometrist who couldn't fit me in. The front office staff scheduled me right away for an appointment in a few hour's time. Dr. Sumner was polite, concerned, and immediately began testing away. After conducting tests on machines, he also did an eye exam looking into every nook and cranny of the inside of my eye. I had no discomfort and felt that Dr. Sumner was doing everything possible to take care of me. He and his staff stayed late that day and, when he couldn't find anything, he put in a call to an opthamologist who also provided consultation. In the end, there was nothing wrong with my eye and I was able to start my vacation with confidence. Many thanks to this office for their expert care!! read more

This office infuriates me. I came in with a 14 yr old who needed to get to a dance class after my apt. and my 1.5 yr old. I forgot to call my insurance card in ahead of time and he woman working the desk was NOT able to deal. My family has AH-mazing executive insurance that is full coverage. The front desk lady made me feel like I was scamming her with false insurance???? She asked my for the same info 5 times!! and still needed me to write it down. As I ran of time I was still able to take a break from it and take my daughter to dance, but then I returned to the lady giving me suspicious stink eye again, "I'm still a little nervous because the computer says you're listed as an independent under the insurance plan, and you're telling me you're covered under your husband." AHHH! I told her I didn't have another hour to deal with helping her figure out the insurance and that I'd just keep returning to my old office. Ugh! Didn't even get my glasses! read more

Larry Sumner is a highly skilled optometrist and a warm, caring individual. His staff is very professional and attentive, as well. My family and I have been going to see Larry for years and have never had to wait or had any experience short of our expectations. A few years ago, I had genetic testing, which showed that I was at some risk for macular degeneration, and Larry has been watching me very carefully since, seeing me several times a year and having me take a prescribed Omega and a multiple vitamin without zinc (who would have known!). Anyway, at my last visit Larry suggested that I seemed to be doing so well that he didn't need to see me until a year from now! That's progress!!! read more

The doc is great, and I've been going there for years BUT the office staff has really gone downhill. Don't expect them to be open any time their website says they will--I've been there both in the morning and at the end of the day, looking at the sign in their window stating that they should still be open, and all the staff has taken off. I mentioned it back in December at my appointment and again today, only to have the gal on the phone snap that she'd get right on that and she got even more annoyed when I pointed out that I'd mentioned it before. I'm guessing that the prescription she's supposed to fax me so I can order online, after stopping by to find their office closed, won't come today either. read more

I'I've been going to Dr. Sumner for +14 years. His exams are very thorough and he takes his time while going through the explanations. His patient style is unique in that he can break down the most technical of things into easy to understand language, which I really appreciate. Every year he seems to be adding new tests and new diagnostic tools--which make me think he loves to keep his practice on the leading edge for the benefit of his patients. While I don't have any vision problems, I try to get my eyes checked every few years. While at the office Dr. Sumner told me that I had great vision, but when he realized that I had vision coverage through my medical insurance (as well as separate stand alone vision coverage), he decided to run an additional test for which my medical insurance would pay. At the end of my visit I was charged two copays- one for my vision insurance and one for my medical insurance as a result of the additional test. I recently reviewed the explanation of benefits from my medical insurance and because of this this "extra" test he was able to bill both my vision insurance and my medical insurance for the same office visit. I don't know if this is a common practice among optometrists, but I am guessing this is a common occurrence in Dr. Sumner's practice as his receptionist was extra diligent about emphasizing that my copay would be collected at the end of the visit (which one normally wouldn't need to do if one weren't in the habit of adding on additional possibly unnecessary tests which ultimately smack of revenue generation). I left questioning the care I had received and will certainly not go back to Dr. Sumner. read more

DO NOT VISIT THIS OFFICE. The front desk was not only rude, unhelpful, and belittling, but they overcharged without prior notification. After scheduling an appointment and discussing the purpose of the appointment (annual eye exam for the purpose of ordering new contact lenses) Debbie informed me that they accept my insurance for the eye exam but do not for ordering contacts. I decided to go in anyway, so I could get my updated prescription and order online elsewhere. Once the exam was completed I expected to pay my $15.00 copay, however had to pay an additional $105.00 for the contact lens evaluation, despite the $30.00 patient responsibility as said in my insurance benefits. Confused, I called my insurance as soon as I arrived home, and they verified that Dr. Sumner was an in-network provider, and the total cost of the visit should have been $45.00. My insurance representative spoke directly with Debbie and she stated that despite accepting the insurance as a practice they charge $105 for contact lens evaluations. Based on my personal interactions, and the interactions of my insurance representative, it is clear that Debbie and this practice intentionally withhold information about the true cost of the evaluation until it has been completed in order to force patients into paying out of pocket. I love Dr. Sumner he is the kindest most professional person I have ever had work on my eyes( I have been going to him since 2009 after my eyes were injured)----that said his staff NOT SO MUCH! In 2011 I went for a check up and new glasses, the lady who fits you and orders the glasses told me she would call me in 7-10 days when my glasses arrived. It was almost 3 weeks later and I han't heard from them so I called and was told by this lady that she didn't order my glasses when I first went because she said she didn't know if I would be able to afford them! WTF! After a few harsh words and a reminder that they had never had a problem getting their money from me, my glasses were ordered. In Nov. 2013 I went again for new glasses was again told 7-10 days and it is now January and I still don't have my glasses. Honestly, if Dr. Sumner wasn't so great with me I would never go back to this place!!! read more
